In July we went to the
Italian capital, Rome. The
coach ride in from the airport to Rome
was full of marvellous sights: Roman
walls and buildings and great
neo-classical architecture. We entered
the city through towering walls that
were once breached by the
Barbarians. We set off for the walking
tour of Rome and everyone soaked
up the wonders around them. The
churches are, without exception,
breathtaking. Artists too many to name
obviously gave their time to the
glorification of God and the paintings,
sculptures, tapestries and statuary are
magnificent. A highlight was our visit to
the ‘Bone Church’ where monks saved
the bones of deceased fellows and
made them into a variety of tableau.
Eerie but impressive.
RELIGIOUS STUDIES DEPARTMENT
Our visit to the Vatican included a fascinating display, illustrating just how worldwide the reach of the church
is. The tour ended in the Sistine Chapel, with Michelangelo’s fabulous paintings all around, we found
ourselves standing in complete silence, mouths open in wonder and awe. We visited a new mosque that
was big enough to hold three thousand worshippers. We also experienced a traditional trattoria, Italian
gelati – exquisite – and Italian coffee. With all the senses stimulated we made our way home having
thrown our pennies in the Fontana de Trevi to guarantee our return to this wonderful city!
Fairtrade Stall
Regular customers to the weekly Fairtrade stall will have noticed that they have been selling new goodies
to treat our tastebuds. The ‘Crisp ‘n’ Chewy’ bars have been a great hit - so have the bottles of apple and
orange juices. Remember to visit the stall each Friday to buy yourself a snack and remember to buy
Fairtrade when you go shopping!
Joseph at New Theatre 2011
Forty pupils from Bassaleg school, accompanied by the RS department, were treated to an amazing
performance of Joseph at the New Theatre in Cardiff. We were thrilled by the dancing, the singing and the
acting and even joined in with the singing in the finale. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the performance.
Bible Writing Competition 2011
Last June a small number of pupils entered a national Bible writing competition. Pupils were required
to write an essay about a selected Bible story as if they were actually present at the event. This
year three students received certificates of merit for highly commended work; Charles
Cowper, Harriet Reeks and Lewis Waters. Megan Jeffery, received a special prize of a
copy of the New International Bible for outstanding work.
