The Heart

Grounds hire
Those over 50 can enjoy a two hour
sailing session between 10am and 12
noon on Thursday mornings. Come
along and sail or windsurf. All you
need is a little experience and you
can have two hours of fun.
Angling
Angling on the main lake is run
by Welwyn Garden City Angling
Club. You can set up on one of the
designated fishing beaches and the
bailiffs will come round to collect fees.
Aqua playground Playground
The Aqua play area contains
equipment which sprays, squirts,
mists or sheets water into the
play area, giving a fun play for the
youngsters in a safe and interactive
environment. A kiosk and public
toilet facilities are available during
opening times only. For opening times
call 01438 242242.
The bandstand can be hired on
Sundays between 2 – 4pm.
It has a temporary roof and
electricity supply which can be used
at an extra cost.
Corporate events
We can tailor activities to
accommodate your company’s
requirements and provide instruction
or supervision to give your staff
or group a day to remember.

The café adjoins the centre and is
open 7 days a week serving a range of
hot and cold food and drinks.

Firework display
Our annual firework display is held
on November 5th every year. It is run
by our BTEC qualified staff. We are
also able to provide a professional
firework service at a venue of your
choice. Professional guidance can
be given on a selection of fireworks
appropriate to location, duration and
budget.
Gift Vouchers
We offer gift vouchers for all of our
courses or private tuition if you
want to surprise someone with an
excellent gift.
We will be happy to advise you on
your event. Please contact us to
arrange an initial site visit. Power and

Fairlands Valley has a Training room
in a magnificent parkland setting
and comes complete with modern
IT facilities eg. interactive white
board. Available for club, corporate

Dinghy Sailing Courses
Come and learn one of Great Britain’s most successful Olympic
sports. Sailing is a fun and exhilarating sport that can take you
places.
We run fully accredited Royal Yachting
Association (RYA) courses for junior, youth
and adults.
The RYA scheme is designed to encourage
people of all ages to learn to sail in a fun
Junior / Youth Sailing
and safe environment. You will work
through the scheme at your own pace with
a fully qualified instructor, developing your
skills and knowledge to become a good
dinghy sailor.
Junior Code J, Youth Code Y
Our courses are run during Easter, Whitsun, and Summer school holidays
with 4 day courses for 8-10 year olds & 5 day courses for 11-16 year olds.
During these courses you would be aiming for stage 1, 2, or 3 according to your
development.
Adult sailing
Code D
These courses are run over weekends either Saturday & Sunday or
consecutive Saturdays or Sundays. We can run courses for two or
more people at other times by arrangement.
We run scheduled level 1 & 2 courses, also Seamanship, Sailing with spinnakers,
and Start racing courses on demand.
If you’re not sure whether it’s the sport for you, why not have a one hour taster
at the private tuition rate before you book your course.
Sailability
Sport is a very important part of all our lives and brings enormous physical, social and
psychological benefits. These benefits are particularly important for those people with
disabilities, but often they get to enjoy them all too rarely. Sailing, more than any other
sport, gives us a chance to change this. At Fairlands Valley Outdoor Activities we support
the RYA Sailability Scheme and believe we are well placed to help people with disabilities
take up the sport.
Stevenage Sailability won a Pride of Stevenage Awardm ‘So Sharing’ in 2011. This
recognised the volunteers for working hard to promote the physical, social and
psychological benefits of sport and making sailing an enjoyable experience for people of
different ages with physical disabilities.

Power Boat Courses

The RYA power boat scheme exists to meet the needs of those
who use small open power boats for sport or leisure.
This course will introduce you to the sport
of power boating, including basic boat
checks, pre-launch checks and power boat
handling skills at both high and low speed.
If you are looking to go on inland european
waterways you will also need to complete
a CEVNI test which we can arrange.
Personal Watercraft Courses
If you have previous experience we run
a direct assessment course for those that
have practical and theoretical knowledge.
This course is to assess you against the
RYA syllabus.
These courses are run by arrangement.

If you have your own PWC we can run fully accredited courses or
direct assessments using your own craft. These courses are run by
arrangement.
Welcome to the world of Kayaking and Canoeing. On these
paddle sport courses you will learn a wide range of different
paddling skills.
For beginners, the One Star course is
designed to give you a fun and entertaining
introduction to the sport, teaching you the
basics of both sports.
The Two Star course is for those that
have already attained their One Star or
experience equivalent. This course will
teach you to refine your skills, building
on what you have already learnt, with the
introduction of some basic white water
paddle strokes.
These courses are separated into Youth
(10-16) & Adult courses (16 years and
upwards).
Youth courses are run during school
holidays and the adult courses are run over
weekends. Both are taught to the BCU
syllabus.

New to Fairlands Valley this year is ‘So Challenging’,
one of the best High Ropes courses in the area,
providing lots of high adrenaline action. For all ages
8 and over. This will test even the toughest nerves,
walking along the beam or wobbly bridge at over
9 metres in the air and, to top if off, a 25 metre zip
wire to end. The course also features a challenging
13 metre climbing wall, abseiling tower and low
ropes course. These are pre-booked sessions that
run over weekends all year round, and evenings in
the summer months and school holidays. Based on
45 minute session times which includes all safety
equipment and briefings.

Group Paddle Sports
At Fairlands we have different types of boats that can hold large
groups of people to get everyone involved.
Bell Boats – hold up to 12 paddlers with an instructor steering. These are
catamarans which make them very stable yet fast and fun. They also are great for
getting disabled people onto the water. Minimum age 8.
Dragon Boats – can hold up to 10 paddlers plus a drummer with an instructor
steering. They are single hulled boats which are great for exciting team racing and
events. Minimum age 8.

RYA OnBoard Youth Saturday morning 10am –12pm
Enjoy your sailing? Come and have fun with like-minded people. This session is aimed at
8-16 year olds who can sail. This is a supervised session with a dedicated instructor to
give helpful hints and advice.
Sunday
Fairlands Race Squad
10am –12pm
We run this race squad for those that
have reached their stage 3 and above.
This session aims to improve your skills
and build new ones. There is a dedicated
instructor available who will run a training
session for the first hour. In the second
hour there will be the opportunity to put
what you have learnt into practice during
a race.
Sunday Racing 11am –12pm
For all adults and kids. Come and join in
with the fun of racing. This session runs
throughout the year with three different
series, all of which have prizes at the end
of them.
