De Wint
Collection
THE Usher Gallery, <strong>of</strong>
course, has been
another great interest <strong>of</strong> Mr.
Cooper's.
During his time here he
has seen the permanent De
Wint collection established, a
new wing-the Curtois Wing
-opened, and more recently,
the founding <strong>of</strong> a Tennyson
collection. Among the people
who were concerned with the
establishment <strong>of</strong> the now
world-famous De Wint collection
was Mr. Ge<strong>of</strong>frey
Harmsworth. He showed
keen interest in the scheme
and gave solid indication <strong>of</strong>
that interest in the shape <strong>of</strong>
several pictures.
War Days
B UT, though his life in
Lincoln has been
principally among books
and pictures, one aspect <strong>of</strong>
his work which, Mr. Cooper
tells me, will 1ong 1ive in his
memory has nothing to do
with either.

Scampton crossed the English
coast on their way to the
Ruhr dams in May, 1943 -
and they are going to buy a
boat, a sailing craft. For Mr.
Cooper remembers well the
days <strong>of</strong> his boyhood when
he went to sea with his
father, skipper <strong>of</strong> a fishing
vessel from Lowest<strong>of</strong>t. "I
must get my hands on sail
again," he said.
But art wilt not be left out
<strong>of</strong> it altogether. Mr, Cooper's
father wanted him to be a
seaman, but, "to the old
man's disgust" he entered
the world <strong>of</strong> books and paint.
Now he is going to mix them
- the sea and painting -
with an occasional pint with
the locals.
