Calling all Year 9, 10 and 11 bilingual students!!
Apply now to become a
Bilingual Literacy Mentor or regret it later!
We need bilingual students to join our Bilingual Book Club as mentors for
year 7s developing their home languages. The job of a Bilingual Literacy
Mentor (BLM) is to encourage, motivate and support bilingual students in
Year 7 and to help them develop their home language.
Are you compassionate, thoughtful, resourceful, friendly, patient and
understanding?
Do you speak and read a language other than English? Is that language Greek, German,
Bengali, Arabic, Russian, Farsi, Urdu or Spanish? Then we need you!
What does a BLM do?
A BLM will spend one lunchtime session a week (Tuesdays 13:00 – 13:30 in the Library in
the main school building) reading books in their home language with one year 7 pupil.
You will always mentor the same pupil so that you can build up a relationship of sharing
and support.
Alongside the reading you will ask your pupil to do certain innovative activities using your
language, imagination and creativity.
What are the benefits?
Your pupil will benefit from improved literacy in their home language and this will affect their literacy in
English. They will learn new social and academic skills and your example as a role-model will be vital
in affecting their progress throughout Year 7.
You will benefit from training in the Skills of Academic Mentoring, Protecting vulnerable children and
Literacy Strategies. You will develop your patience, compassion and understanding.
You will be able to share your language, experiences, culture and academic skills with someone in
great need of support.
You will have solid examples of all these skills and many more to use in sixth form / university
interviews, UCAS applications, CVs and Job Applications. This will be especially helpful to anyone
planning a career with children or caring for adults or in Education.
How do I apply?
You can come and sign your name on the sign-up sheet in the LCI office (inside A22) and
collect a short application form to fill in. Or you can email
j.hughes@stmarylebone.westminster.sch.uk . Please do this straight away! Do it now!...
What are you waiting for?!
Young Chef Competition
Huge congratulations to Alice D-P, Lola A, Savanna B and Esme M for
competing in the Young Chef competition this Tuesday, results to
follow…
Congratulations to Year 7s for their fantastic effort in
International Evening last week. From African Drumming
to Edith Piaf, from ballet to Bollywood, from Aboriginal
dream stories to Appalachian choral songs, performers
took us on a whistle-stop tour of the cultures of the world,
ending with a whole-cast rendition of a Kenyan Swahili
song (pictured). The students were delighted, the parents
were thrilled, and when the dust had settled, we all had a
broader vision of the cultural wealth and diversity of both
our school and our planet. Watch this space for the
On Monday 12 th November our AS
Biology class travelled to the Natural
History Museum. The aim of this
visit day was to gain information for
our coursework reports that we will
be writing during this academic year.
We had an organised talk with scientist Dr. Mark Caine who
spoke about his role in the Botany section of the museum. His job
involves travelling abroad to
places such as the Azores,
Canary Islands and areas of
Northern Africa such as
Morocco. In these places he
collects specimens and
classifies them when he
returns to the lab in the
Cocoon Herbarium section of the Natural History Museum.
After lunch we got involved with a taxonomy workshop and
discovered how challenging it can be to classify animals. We also
had a chance to visit some of the museum’s vast spirit collection.
The Darwin centre is 7 floors containing 22 million different
types of zoological specimen, from a Shetland pony to a giant
squid named Archie. We were even lucky enough to see some of
Darwin’s own specimens from the Galapagos Islands.
A huge thanks to all of the Sixth Formers who
participated in the fantastic Literary Dress up day on
the 9 th November and came in fancy dress to school.
There were some brilliant ideas - from Tintin to Mary
Poppins, Harry Potter to Alice in Wonderland and even
a Steven Gerrard was seen (Yes, he is now a literary
legend due to his autobiography). Around 80 people
got involved and ergo we managed to raise an
impressive £100 for READ international charity who aims
to improve access to education in East Africa by
collecting books.
Well done and thank you for dressing up!
