Term Three, Week Four
5 th July 2011
“People of Mercy; working together to make a difference.”
People of Mercy... Celebrating our Tradition
For those who are new to our community, I would like to draw your attention to our celebrations in the final
week of Term Three. On the College Calendar you will see that the last week is called Mercy Week and
each day activities are organised that acknowledge and celebrate the values which are integral to our
Mercy and Catholic, Christian traditions.
An invitation has been included in our newsletter over the past few weeks for our Mercy Mass, to be held
on the first day of that week. Spirituality is core to both our Mercy and Catholic, Christian heritage. It is an
important opportunity for us to come together to celebrate as a faith community. A fitting way to start our
Mercy Week... I hope you are able to join us for mass, as well as for the morning tea that will follow.
On Tuesday, as part of community day, we will welcome Year 5 students from our more rural Catholic
Primary Feeder schools who share our Mercy Tradition. They will enjoy a day of fun activities, introducing
them to a Secondary setting and the different facilities and opportunities that will come as part of this
transition. The Cultural Committee will host a Trivia Night and the College will invite a group of past
students and community members to the Mercy Heritage Centre at All Hallows School.
Hospitality will be our focus on Wednesday and as is becoming a tradition we will invite our Grandparents
to join us for the morning. I have included an invitation with this email so you can plan ahead. Thursday will
be our day for acknowledging education. Sr Patricia Blundell rsm will join us on this day to work with a
range of classes. I am most excited about our new project on this day working in partnership with Zonta
Club of West Moreton packaging birthing kits for women in third world countries. The project has as its
objective that every woman has the right to a clean and safe birth. On this day, we will assemble 600
birthing kits for women who do not necessarily enjoy the same rights and conditions as us.
And finally on Friday we will celebrate our Mission and Service priorities with our Pirate Day which raises
money for the Childhood Cancer Support Group.
A wonderful and rewarding way to finish a very busy term... many staff, parents and students will be
working hard to ensure the success of our Mercy Week... a true community event that celebrates who we
are and our Mission!
Catherine McAuley is central to our Mercy Tradition and I was thrilled to view photos taken on a recent trip
to Dublin, Ireland by Mrs Jennifer Rooks. I include here a few photos for your interest... which inspires me
more to make a pilgrimage to the home and
resting place of Catherine.
Community
On Sunday just passed, a
number of our students
participated in a number of
ways in the Park-to-Park.
Firstly we had a number of
girls compete in the event
including Ms Abigail Rose,
Ms Kelly Gryga and Mr
Paul Davy. In addition,
Jayne Johanson, Mr
Michael Blanchfield and a
number of our Social
Cont’d .......

Justice Group operated a water station for the
competitors. Well done to these girls who were
successful in being named the Water Station
of the Park-to-Park earning the College a prize
of $500. I am sure this money will be well
utilised by our Social Justice group to continue
our support of groups less fortunate than
ourselves.
I look forward to joining many of our Year 10
girls and their parents at the Subject Selection
Evening on Monday of next week. It is an important evening that will assist girls in their decision making for
their Curriculum Program for Year 11 and 12.
We also wish Mrs Jackie Kirby well as she commences some well deserved Long Service Leave next week
for the remainder of the term. I thank Mrs Frances Sowden who will work full time for this period to assist in
covering for Mrs Kirby. As well, Mrs Pamela McGrath will work an additional day to provide some extra
assistance in the Front Office.
Enjoy your weekend with family and friends,
Census Night – Tuesday 9 th August: Counting Homeless Students
Counting homeless students in Australia is important as it assists in “forming policy, allocating resources
and providing resources” (ABS Census Fact Sheet).
Families with children in our Catholic schools may accommodate a ‘couch surfer’, i.e., a student who is a
friend of your daughter or son who may be staying with the family for a short or long period of time. If that
young person is staying with your family on Census Night, 9 th August 2011, the person filling in the Census
form should write ‘None’ in the ‘Suburb’ part of the question ‘Where does the person actually live?’ (ABS
Census Fact Sheet).
From the Deputy
Dear Students, Teachers, Parents, Guardians and Friends of St Mary's College,
A number of significant processes are occurring for our Senior Students at the moment.
Year 12:
There is only a short time to go until the QCS (Queensland Core Skills) Test, and students are busy preparing for this,
utilizing the extensive feedback that they have received from the full practice test completed late last term. Also, Year
12s have been briefed on how to go about filling in their QTAC (Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre)
Applications which list the universities, places of further learning and courses of study they hope to enrol in at the
start of next year. These need to be submitted on line by the middle of the upcoming term holidays.
Year 11:
After completing their first semester, students should really be performing at their best to establish their highest level
of work achievement. All assessment work is kept in the student's folio. The folio builds up over time to show the
profile of the student's achievement. While much of Year 11 in many subjects is claimed to be formative, students
need to remember that if they change subjects the work automatically becomes summative (that is the mark counts for
that semester). Also, if a student is ill for a period in Year 12 and cannot complete a piece of assessment, the work
from Year 11 takes on greater significance.
Year 10:
Students are in the middle of a major SET (Senior Education and Training) Planning process. The Transition Week
was completed last week and the Subject Selection evening is on Monday. The following week, SET Plan interviews
will occur. This is a time for major planning and decision making for our Year 10 students.
All students in all year levels should be establishing good habits and practices with regard to attendance, school work,
homework and assignment completion. Good daily and weekly routines need to be established to set students up for
success.
Regards,
Paul Wruck
Deputy Principal
DATE CLAIMER: Monday 8 th August, 7.00pm McAuley Centre Year 10
Subject Selection Evening for all Year 10 students and their parents.
The evening will involve a 35 minute presentation, followed by
opportunity to discuss subjects directly with Academic Coordinators
one to one, and will conclude by 8.30pm.
From the APA
Welcome everyone to the end of another very busy week.
The College community is very much looking forward to celebrating Respect Week next week. The program is an
initiative of the Student Representative Council (SRC) under the guidance of the two Vice Captains, Madison Sowden
and Chantel Phillips. Congratulations to all members of the SRC for their organisation of these activities that serve to
remind us of the importance of being respectful in all our interactions. As well, we acknowledge and thank Ms Allison
Minton and Mrs Cathy Currie for their leadership of the SRC.
This weekend provides the final opportunity for our Year 10 girls to do that last minute shopping to ensure they are ready
for the Year 10 "Masquerade" Dance. Thank you to Mrs Philomena Folan for her organisation and to all staff who will
provide supervision on the evening. I am very much looking forward to sharing the evening with our Year 10 students.
Included in the newsletter this week, is an invitation to all members of our community to join us for our Father's Day
mass. This will be held on Friday 2 nd September, and tea/coffee will be provided afterwards.
I hope parents are able to support the Parents and Friends Initiative on Wednesday of next week attending the forum on
"Healthy Minds". I am sure parents will find this a most informative presentation that only requires one hour of your time.
Don't forget photos on Thursday 11 th August next week...
From the APRE
Next Monday, (8 th August) is the Feast of St Mary MacKillop. There are many lessons we can draw from Mary’s life and
the virtues she brought to living, but at this time of the year, it is Mary’s endurance which impresses me. Mary faced
many obstacles and worries as she struggled to do what she believed was God’s will. Her spirit of endurance shines out
of the many letters she wrote during her life. The following is an extract from a letter Mary wrote in 1873 to Monsignor
Kirby one of her clerical supporters. It can serve as a good meditation for us on her feast day:
I must tell you that from early childhood, as far back as I can remember, God gave me such a sense of His watchful
presence that I would feel myself reproved for my smallest faults. He gave me good Catholic parents, a mother that in
patience, resignation and suffering seemed to me, and to many more, a second Monica*. My father had been educated
for the Church and had studied deeply. From him I learnt so much of the teachings of our holy Faith …..
My life as a child was one of sorrows, my home, when I had it, a most unhappy one….
When I was little more than sixteen years of age, the principal care of a very large family fell upon me, and from then until
I was twenty five I felt its burden yearly more and more. All this time too, I desired to be a Religious but was frequently in
my impatience and pride in great danger of losing my holy vocation …
At last God have me a Director to whom for the first time I told all my desires and discouragements, explaining also my
position towards my family. He told me that for a time longer my duty was to them, but reassured me as to my vocation,
and gave me certain rules for my spiritual guiding. This was Fr Woods; he was from that time—a period of some years—
my Director until; in a most marked manner our dear Lord freed me from the ties which bound me so strongly to my family
and left me free to follow my vocation …
I thought to have escaped care and responsibility on entering religion, but instead of that had the charge of others thrust
upon me. It was indeed a painful cross, made still more so by trying circumstances …
For some time before the storm burst in Adelaide, I had much mental suffering, and with the will of God before my eyes,
had to differ with Fr Woods about the treatment of some things. This caused me pain because I saw that it perplexed and
grieved him, but God’s will was more to me than all, and as far as I understood it, I had to persevere. When the storm
burst, my mental troubles in so far as the Institute or myself were concerned ceased. I felt peace and the warmest
confidence that out of these terrible troubles, and scandals even, good would come.
(* St Monica was the mother of St Augustine. Through her prayers and example her son gave up a life of sin and
became one of the greatest saints of the Church)
Let’s pray for some of Mary’s endurance and faith as we move forward in this very busy term.
Michael Blanchfield
Assistant Principal - Religious Education
Hi all
PARENT INFORMATION SESSION
The St Mary’s College Parents & Friends are excited to host a Parent Information Session titled:
“HEALTHY MINDS”
Facilitated by staff from the Ipswich Child & Youth Mental Health Services (CYMHS), this
presentation will cover topics that can guide you to a better understanding of mental health and
the varying diagnosis and signs and symptoms associated. Please see the attached flier for
further details.
PARENTS & FRIENDS MEETING
The next meeting of the St Mary’s College Parents & Friends is scheduled for Wednesday 10 th
August, immediately following the Parent Information Session mentioned above.
SAFE DRIVER TRAINING
The Year 12 girls were given some reading material this week regarding the Safe Driver Training
scheduled for Thursday 15 th September. This course is highly recommended and I know that students
in past years have really benefited from the skills learnt. The Parents & Friends will again be
subsidizing the cost for each girl who wishes to attend. This keeps the cost down for families and
ensures that as many girls as possible have an opportunity to take part. Numbers are limited so keep
a look out for the information as it becomes available.
Until next time!
Woolworths, we earn one point towards the purchase of educational resources.
So... when you are shopping at Woolworths, all you need to do is save your dockets and bring them into school to the
Student Office. With your help we hope to be able to purchase some great resources for your daughters and the College.
