Term Three, Week Five
2012
“We should be as shining lamps,
giving light to all those around us.”
Catherine McAuley
Shining Lamps…Reflecting on Grace
On Wednesday evening, a number of staff were fortunate enough to listen to three speakers as they
reflected on the year of Grace, namely Fr Bill O’Shea, Br Damien Price and Sr Monica Cavanagh. All
three are well known and well respected identities in the Catholic Church.
I was particularly drawn to Br Price’s invitation to discover the face of God in all the little “g” moments.
The Year of Grace is a time to be aware, through prayer and reflection. To take time to really hear
God whispering to us in the people and events of everyday. I suppose I had the opportunity to think of
those staff, parents and students with whom I had come in contact with or had spoken to throughout
the day, and the challenge of slowing down, to see in them the face of God.
Mary MacKillop, or St Mary of the Cross, celebrated her Feast Day on Wednesday. And so Sr
Monica’s presentation was all the more appropriate given that she talked about Mary MacKillop living
a Graced Life in our Nation. Mary MacKillop encouraged others to “Cling to God’s love and Grace.”
She is a wonderful example of someone who was quite ordinary but had an extraordinary sense of
trust in God and reverence and dignity for all. She is the patron of Brisbane Catholic Education as she
modelled the importance of a Catholic education where all are welcome.
And so we are reminded that God’s Grace is a gift, given freely. But we are accountable to play our
part in being the eyes, the ears, the hands and the face of God in the lives of others.
Shining Lamps… Farewell
Mrs Rebecca Thoms joined the St Mary’s College community last year working as an Administration
Assistant, and more recently moved into the role of Teacher Aide. I was sad to accept Mrs Thoms’
resignation earlier this week. We have valued her contribution to our community and wish her all the
best as the family relocates to Mackay.
Due to the suddenness of Mrs Thoms’ departure, the College is looking for a Teacher Aide to replace
Mrs Thoms for the remainder of the year. This position is advertised on Catholic Jobs Online and I
encourage interested parties to apply. The role would include working closely with teachers to provide
support to students in class, mainly in the subject areas of Mathematics and Science for Years 8, 9
and 10.
Shining Lamps…
Well done to a number of our girls who achieved success this week on the Sports Field. These will be
acknowledged in the Sports News.
I encourage all members of our community to support the Recipe Book for our 150 Years, “Cooking at
Cath’s Table”… The details are outlined later in this newsletter but I would like to acknowledge the
Parents and Friends Association for organising and overseeing this initiative for our 150 Years
Celebrations. Please pass it on to other past staff, students or parents who may wish to contribute.
I look forward to joining the Year 10 girls and their invited guests for their Dance tonight. Many thanks

to Mrs Phil Folan and Mrs Jennifer DaSilva for their organisation of this event and to all the staff who
will assist with supervision on the night.
Please find included in this newsletter an invitation to the Annual Father’s Day Eucharist to be held on
Friday 31 st August in St Mary’s Church. We hope many of our fathers, grandfathers and uncles can
join us on this occasion.
Enjoy your weekend with family and friends,
From the Deputy
Dear Parents, Guardians, Teachers, Students and members of our St Mary’s Community,
Cold weather, westerly winds, it must be Ekka time! Typically what also comes around at this time of year is quite a lot of
illness in all sorts of shapes and sizes. While these cannot always be avoided, I recommend students be conscious of the
basic medical advice provided by the authorities: wash your hands frequently, drink plenty of water, get lots of sleep and stay
warm. Sometimes the simple, time-worn approaches are still the best!
This week, the Year 10 students and their parents gathered on Monday night for the Senior Subject Selection Evening. This is
another step in the whole process of Pathways. Another step occurs next week as these students complete their SET Plans
(Senior Education and Training Plans) and have a brief interview with an experienced Guidance Counsellor to monitor their
progress. I wish the students of Year 10 all the very best in their deliberations.
Two occasions in particular this week caused me to stop and think about how proud I am to be a part of St Mary’s College.
Firstly, I had the opportunity to interview some students who wish to enrol in St Mary’s College as transfer students from other
schools. When I saw how keen they were to come and be part of our community, having heard and witnessed from our current
students what wonderful things were happening here, I felt deservedly proud. Secondly, on Thursday at Photo Day, when I
saw and heard the students being called for photos in so many extra curricular activities I was reminded of the generosity,
commitment and engagement of the girls in so many aspects of community life, and again I felt proud of them.
I would like to remind students and parents of the procedures for meeting assessment commitments.
Assessment in any form: a written or oral exam, performance, draft assignment, assignment or other format, should always be
completed on the assigned date. This is a very high and serious priority, and in fairness to all students, we need to ensure
that students follow through on their commitments. Of course sometimes students are ill, or at a funeral or other important
commitments which temporarily overrides their assessment commitment. When this is known in advance, students and
parents need to inform the relevant staff member to plan for this event. For students in Years 8 to 10 a parent letter would be
expected to explain this, while students in Years 11 and 12 require a doctor’s certificate when they do not meet a deadline.
With assignments, these will be handed in the next day into the Assignment Box, with the letter or certificate attached. When it
comes to missed exams, the next day a student returns to school, she is to report to the Reflection Room before school to see
Tracy, and would normally sit the exam immediately school starts for the day, unless Tracy negotiates a different time later
that day.
On Monday 13 th August the Exam Timetable for Years 11 and 12 will be published to the students, with exams scheduled to
commence on Friday 7 th September. Also, a reminder that the QCS (Queensland Core Skills) Tests will be held on Tuesday 4 th
and Wednesday 5 th September for Year 12 students. Non-OP students who have made formal arrangements with the College
not to sit the tests, will have an alternate program organized by Mrs DaSilva.
God bless!
From the APA
Yesterday’s Sport and Cultural photographs went well. I am amazed, each year, at the
number of different groups photographed on this day! This number reflects the commitment of
our students to get involved and of our staff to provide as many opportunities as possible for our
girls. As a Parish school, it is interesting to see the photograph of our Year 12 students who
have journeyed together from Year 1 at St Mary’s Primary to this, their final year at St Mary’s
College. I couldn’t help but imagine their faces in their first school photograph all those years
ago and the pride their parents must have had (and still have) in their ‘little girls’! Another
photograph reflecting our links to St Mary’s Parish was one taken of the choir who volunteer to
sing each month at the 6.00pm Mass on Sunday evening. Whilst the composition of this choir
fluctuates it is lovely to see our students provide this service to our Parish community.
I remind all parents of students in Years 8, 9 and 10 that the tracksuit is only permitted to be
worn on Wednesdays as part of the Sports Uniform. The tracksuit top is never to be worn
without the tracksuit pants. On other days the full Winter uniform (including the optional College
blazer) is to be worn. If your daughter is in Year 8-10 and does not have a College blazer then
please think about ordering one for next year. The blazer is a compulsory part of the Senior
uniform and is a warm addition to the Winter uniform for all students. It is a nice
investment to purchase a blazer early knowing that your daughter will be required to wear it in
Years 11 and 12. Contact Janine at the Uniform Shop for more information.
Please remind your daughter of the need to report directly to school when they arrive by bus or
are dropped off by you. We can only monitor their safety when they are on our property.
I know that our Year 8 students will represent us beautifully at the upcoming Catholic Girls
Athletics Carnival at QEII Stadium on Monday 20th August. I know that our Year 8s will be
cheering on our Athletics Team with great excitement!
Have a great week,
OPEN SOCCER
The Open Soccer Team won the Grand Final against
the very competent Boonah SHS team on Monday, 6 th
August. This is the fourth year that this team has
entered the CISSSA competition and they have won
every final since then. It was a tense game as the
teams drew three all at full time. After twenty minutes
of extra time the score was unchanged. The teams
then moved into a penalty shoot-out, finally winning six
to five. The game finished as the sun set on an
amazing team of girls. The team is managed by Mrs
Morris and very ably coached by Andy Haywood. They
now enter the Metropolitan Championship Knockout
Competition which they have won for two out of three
years. All the best ladies – you are winners.
From the APRE
Meditation for the Year of Grace III
The Year of Grace is a call to rediscover the roots of our Catholic faith.
Another excerpt from Why Be Catholic? by Richard Rohr explains the
two great traditions which form the basis of Catholicism and how they
must be kept in balance if our faith is to be truly fruitful.
Catholicism is thus a religious tradition with both Eastern and Western
cultural elements. Although Judaism and early Christianity began in
the Middle East, the Church has been predominantly Western since the conversion of the Roman Empire in
the fourth century and the evangelization of Europe beginning in the seventh century.
Our tradition is rather like a great tree with Eastern roots transplanted into Western soil and fertilized by
European nutrients. As an Eastern tradition, Christianity is a wisdom tradition. It is a way of life, a way of
relating to God and others in a manner which embodies the wisdom of the ancient world. It is a spiritual
tradition of personal growth and interpersonal relationships whose greatest expression is the Bible. Both
the Old and New Testaments are primarily concerned with how people should live in relationship with God
and one another in order to find true fulfilment and ultimate happiness.
As a Western tradition, Christianity is a practical tradition. The genius of the Roman Empire was its
pragmatic ability to govern many diverse groups and keep them at peace with one another. Catholicism
inherited this gift of organization and used it to evangelize Europe and to administer the Church in the
Middle Ages. It found a way to preserve the wisdom of the Scriptures while establishing the faith in the
Western world.
Every gardener knows that the right amount of fertilizer can enhance a tree’s growth and increase its
fruitfulness and that too much fertilizer can damage roots and decrease fruitfulness. Unfortunately, the
impact of Western culture on Christianity has damaged our religious roots.
Both Catholicism and Protestantism (which grew out of Catholicism in the 16 th Century) have suffered from
this damage to our Eastern roots. Our forgetfulness of our Jewish heritage caused the antagonism of
Christians towards Jews. Our disregard for the wisdom of the Scriptures, especially the lessons of the
prophets and the Gospels, caused the European permissiveness towards war. Our neglect of the
teachings of Jesus and the example of the earliest Christians caused the Western tolerance of the pursuit
of wealth.
In our tradition, the pragmatism of the West often overshadows the spirituality of the East. The Western
mind is oriented outward, toward the world around. It loves to discover and analyse and create new things.
Modern science and technology are products of Western thinking. The Eastern mind, on the other hand, is
oriented inward, toward the human heart and soul. It prefers to focus on the inner world of the spirit, the
centre of feelings and values and attitudes. Western Christianity, both Protestant and Catholic, has been
predominantly functional and institutional rather than spiritual and personal.
Catholicism at its best has combined the spirituality of the East and the practically of the West in growing
and fruitful ways. It has produced spiritual giants in its saints, intellectual giants in its great theologians and
administrative giants in many of its bishops and popes. It has given rise to great movements such as
monasticism, scholasticism and religious orders at those very times when the world needed them the most.
It has been a dynamic tradition of practical spirituality, of wisdom put into practice.
Catholicism at its worst has not maintained the synthesis between Eastern and Western thinking. When
the balance has become upset, most often it has tilted in the direction of Western pragmatism. Then it has
been narrow and legalistic, authoritarian and controlling, impersonal and utilitarian. It has sometimes been
a rigid tradition of institutional functionalism.
PARLIAMENT
HOUSE EXCURISION
On Monday 6 th August, Year 10 Business
and Enterprise students visited Queensland
Parliament House as part of their studies in
Law. The tour was very informative with the
added feature this year of a personal
presentation by Mr Sean Choat, State
Member for Ipswich West (and father of
Charlotte, Year 10, W5). Mr Choat
provided an insight into the daily life of a
member of State government as well as the
formal procedures undertaken by Parliament.
The students and teachers appreciated the
hospitality provided by Mr Choat and the
parliamentary staff on this day. Students
should also be congratulated on their
behaviour and presentation on the day.
Drop Everything and Read!
On Wednesday 8 th August every teacher and student at St Mary’s College dropped
everything and read for 20 minutes. This event was organised as part of the National
Year of Reading 2012. The
National Year of Reading 2012 is
about children learning to read and
keen readers finding new sources of
inspiration. It's about supporting
reading initiatives while respecting the
oral tradition of storytelling. It's about
helping people discover and
rediscover the magic of books. And
most of all, it's about Australians
becoming a nation of readers.
Nearly half the population struggles
without the literacy skills to meet the
most basic demands of everyday life and work. There are 46% of Australians who can't
read newspapers; follow a recipe; make sense of timetables, or understand the
instructions on a
medicine bottle.
It's a shameful and
worrying statistic
and the National
Year of Reading
2012 aims to address this issue.
For the privilege of reading, students
were asked to bring a gold coin donation
with all the monies raised going to Room to Read. Room to Read works in collaboration
with communities and local governments across Asia and Africa to develop literacy skills
and a habit of reading among primary school children, and support girls to complete
secondary school with the life skills they’ll need to succeed in school and beyond. The
school raised just over $200 for Room to Read.
There are worse crimes than burning books. One of them is not reading them.
RESPECT WEEK 2012
RESPECT Week 2012 has seen the Student Representative Council promote the importance of respectful
personal interactions within our College community through the daily themes of Reading and Education,
Smile and be Positive, Environment, Cultural and Thank You. Each day incorporated a series of activities
pertaining to these daily themes.
Kick starting RESPECT week was Environment Day. In Pastoral Care, low energy tips and tactics were
provided to use at school and to take home in order for our school to become more environmentally
friendly. During the lunch we had the inter-school rubbish collecting competition which provided a great
incentive for our lunch areas to be cleaned up as thoroughly as possible. Congratulations to Murphy House
for collecting the most rubbish. We would also like to give a big thank you to our groundsmen, John and
Peter, for supplying the bins and removing them for us. A special mention must also go to Sharnie
Smith-Luhrmann, Jennifer Kelly and Ashlea Webber for being our biggest helpers and they certainly got
Murphy over the line.
Smile and be Positive Day began with a ‘Smiles’ puzzle competition during Pastoral Care with a winning
Pastoral Care Group from each House walking away victorious. Secondly, we would like to thank everyone
who contributed to the creation and purchasing of over 300 Smile biscuits during first break . The biscuit
sale made possible the donation of $200 to the Beyond Blue charity.
Reading and Education Day began with “Drop Everything and Read”, an event organised by Mrs
Callaghan and Mrs Lynch to provide an opportunity for students to sit down and read a book for 20 minutes
whilst also raising money for Room to Read, an organisation which provides funding as well as resources
such as libraries and books and learning services to increase the opportunities for people to be given the
privilege of reading a book. During lunch, girls were provided with the opportunity to create and wear
educationally, reading or book themed ties.
Cultural Day for 2012 focussed on the cultures of the world, and the unity and respect which comes from
understanding our differences. Getting this day underway was a small quiz in Pastoral Care, with four
Pastoral Care groups winning once again. Lunchtime saw nearly 100 girls get involved in a “Guess the
Flag” game with everyone walking away a winner.
Today, Thank You Day, was a time for us to reflect on how lucky we truly are. Lanterns were brought
forward during the whole school assembly which had been written on by the Pastoral Care groups telling
what they were thankful for. Later today, we focussed Thank You Day on our College staff where the
Student Council and Student Leaders provided a buffet-style home made lunch for the staff. At the end of
this lunch, the Student Council presented a banner to the College staff which had been signed by as many
students of St Mary’s College as was possible in order to show our thanks.
Weeks of careful planning have culminated in what has been a very positive week. The Student
Representative Council would like to thank the student body of St Mary’s College for the way they entered
into the week and participated in the organised activities. Our sincere thanks are extended to Mrs Currie
and Ms Minton for their guiding hands and support leading up to and throughout RESPECT Week.
Last but not least, the members of the Student Representative Council should be commended on their
enthusiastic response to their tasks throughout the organisation of RESPECT Week 2012. The girls worked
extremely hard “being shining lamps, giving light to all around them”
