<strong>People</strong>
With Both Sight and
Hearing Loss or
Impairment

<strong>Stockton</strong>-on-Tees Borough Council Children,
Education & Social Care Department provides a
specialist service <strong>for</strong> people of all ages who
have both sight and hearing loss or impairment
<strong>Services</strong> may be provided following an
assessment of need which will be carried out by
a specialist social worker.
The Department can offer support, in<strong>for</strong>mation
and advice <strong>for</strong> individuals and their families
with regard to local services, support groups,
specialist equipment and benefits.
Although services <strong>for</strong> blind people and deaf
people can be adapted, it is recognised that
people who have a dual sensory loss may have
distinct and unique needs.
Special methods of communication support,
accessing in<strong>for</strong>mation and mobility assistance
may be required to cope with the functions of
everyday life.

The Department had in<strong>for</strong>mation from and
links with various National organisations
involved with people who are deafblind.
Help may be offered in the following areas:
Mobility - to enable people to get around,
become familiar with their environment and
learn routes which they need to use regularly.
Communication - to teach individual skills
which enable them to communicate with other
people or record and read in<strong>for</strong>mation.
Daily Living Skills - to practice tasks which are
per<strong>for</strong>med regularly, such as making a drink or
a snack.
