Visitor arrivals in September 2002 grew 0.6% over the same month in 2001, to a total of 597,115 visitors. Japan and<br />

USA experienced their first month of positive growth in visitor arrivals this year. Overall, for January to September<br />

2002, total visitor arrivals decreased 2.1% over the same period in 2001.<br />

In September, total sales turnover for gazetted hotels declined marginally by 0.7% to reach $140.6 million while the<br />

cess—paying food and beverage establishments reached increased 0.1% to reach $140.9 million.<br />

VISITOR ARRIVALS IN <strong>SEPTEMBER</strong> 2002<br />

The 12 largest visitor-generating markets were:<br />

Total Arrivals: 597,115 (+0.6%)<br />

1. Indonesia 102,841 (+4.7%)<br />

2. Japan 77,841 (+11.4%)<br />

3. Australia 52,286 (-2.9%)<br />

4. Malaysia 48,142 (-10.6%)<br />

5. P R China 47,212 (+37.3%)<br />

6. UK 33,780 (+0.2%)<br />

7. India 27,873 (+2.2%)<br />

8. USA 23,498 (+6.0%)<br />

9. South Korea 21,459 (-8.8%)<br />

10. Thailand 19,342 (-1.5%)<br />

11. Hong Kong 18,902 (-5.6%)<br />

12. Philippines 13,606 (-6.5%)<br />

Visitor Arrivals from Asia<br />

Visitor arrivals from Asia grew 1.9% in September<br />

this year. By regions, arrivals from North Asia rose<br />

9.9% while arrivals from West Asia and South Asia<br />

fell 28.0% and 8.5% respectively. Visitors from<br />

Southeast Asia dropped marginally by 1.9%.<br />

Attractively priced airfares from Jakarta to <strong>Singapore</strong><br />

and the increase in group travel (+62.0%) contributed<br />

to a 4.7% growth in visitor arrivals from<br />

Indonesia. Holiday traffic grew by 12.7%.<br />

Malaysia’s arrivals fell by 10.6%, mainly due to the<br />

drop in holiday traffic (-29.6%). Repeat visitors also<br />

dipped by 6.8%.<br />

The fall in non-group travel package (-5.7%) led to a<br />

drop in arrivals from Thailand. In-transit arrivals<br />

declined by 51.3%.<br />

Visitor arrivals from North Asia grew by 9.9%,<br />

strengthened by the growth from Japan and China.<br />

Visitor arrivals from Japan grew by 11.4% contributed<br />

by the availability of promotional packages and<br />

publicity on <strong>Singapore</strong>. Repeat visitors and nongroup<br />

travel package registered double-digit growth<br />

of 17.4% and 16.5% respectively. Holiday and business-related<br />

traffic also grew 8.7% and 9.1% respectively.<br />

Aggressive group travel promotions resulted in a<br />

significant increase in group packaged tours<br />

(+47.0%) and holiday traffic (+52.0%). This led to a<br />

double-digit growth (+37.3%) in visitor arrivals<br />

from China.<br />

The overall decline in visitor arrivals from South<br />

Korea (-8.8%) was largely due to cautious consumer<br />

sentiments as a result of the poor performance of<br />

the stock market and the dismal economic outlook.<br />

Holiday traffic fell 8.5%.<br />

Performance of the <strong>Tourism</strong> Industry in September 2002<br />

The decline in visitor arrivals from Hong Kong (-<br />

5.6%) was due to the drop in holiday arrivals (-<br />

10.2%).<br />

India’s arrivals grew 2.2%, boosted by the strong<br />

increase in business-related arrivals (+20.0%). There<br />

was also a significant rise in FITs (+14.3%).<br />

Visitor Arrivals from Europe<br />

Europe posted a 3.4% decline in arrivals, mainly<br />

affected by the drop in visitor traffic from Germany.<br />

However, UK registered a marginal growth<br />

of 0.2% in arrivals.<br />

The increase in visitor arrivals from UK could be<br />

supported by its business-related segment which<br />

rose by 6.0%.<br />

Visitor Arrivals from Oceania<br />

The drop in arrivals from Australia contributed to<br />

the overall decline in arrivals from Oceania (-1.5%).<br />

Australia experienced a 2.9% dip in arrivals caused<br />

by a 9.3% decline in holiday traffic. First time visitors<br />

fell by 4.1%.<br />

Visitor Arrivals from Americas<br />

The Americas posted an overall growth of 4.1% in<br />

visitor arrivals, contributed by the increase in arrivals<br />

from USA.<br />

The increase in visitor arrivals from USA (+6.0%)<br />

could be attributed to the low base last year. Holiday<br />

and business-related arrivals grew by 0.5% and<br />

29.6% respectively.<br />

Segment Performance<br />

Overall, holiday arrivals from the top 12 markets<br />

grew by 3.5 %. Growth was registered from China<br />

(+52.0%), Indonesia (+12.7%), Japan (+8.7%) and<br />

USA (+0.5%).<br />

Business-related 1 traffic experienced a 7.2%<br />

growth, largely contributed by the strong performances<br />

from USA (+29.6%), India (+20.0%), China<br />

(+17.6%), South Korea (+16.1%) and Japan<br />

(+9.1%).<br />

HOTEL SECTOR PERFORMANCE IN SEP-<br />

TEMBER 2002<br />

Average occupancy rate (AOR) for gazetted hotels<br />

72.8%, down 1.6 percentage points over the same<br />

month last year. Gross lettings decreased by 2.1%<br />

to 625,365 room nights. Average room rates (ARR)<br />

dipped 5.9% to reach $124.10. Total sales turnover<br />

for gazetted hotels decreased marginally by 0.7% to<br />

$140.6 million this month. Room revenue dipped<br />

7.3% to reach $78.9 million while revenue from<br />

food and beverage (F&B) outlets operated by gazetted<br />

hotels rose by 9.3% to reach $61.7 million over<br />

the same month last year.<br />

FOOD AND BEVERAGE SECTOR PERFORM-<br />

ANCE IN <strong>SEPTEMBER</strong> 2002<br />

Based on submissions from cess paying food and<br />

beverage (F & B) establishments in September,<br />

sales turnover amounted to $140.9 million, an increase<br />

of 0.1% over the same month in 2001.<br />

Visitor Arrivals from Africa<br />

The decline in arrivals from South Africa (-7.6%)<br />

and Mauritius (-21.0%) contributed to the overall<br />

fall in visitor traffic from Africa (-21.3%).<br />

VISITOR ARRIVALS FROM JANUARY TO<br />

<strong>SEPTEMBER</strong> 2002<br />

Visitor arrivals in the first nine months of 2002<br />

dropped by 2.1% over the same period in 2001, to<br />

a total of 5,629,434 visitors. However, visitor arrivals<br />

from Indonesia, China, South Korea and India<br />

registered increases.<br />

The 12 largest visitor-generating markets were:<br />

7. South Korea 288,846 (+3.9%)<br />

HOTEL SECTOR PERFORMANCE FROM<br />

JANUARY TO <strong>SEPTEMBER</strong> 2002<br />

AOR for January to September 2002 was 74.4%,<br />

down by 3.3 percentage points over the same period<br />

last year. Gross lettings declined by 3.9% to<br />

reach 5.8 million room-nights. ARR fell by 5.9% to<br />

reach $126.9 and total sales turnover for gazetted<br />

hotels dipped 6.4% to reach $1,246.3 million.<br />

Room revenue and food and beverage revenue decreased<br />

by 9.2% and 1.7% to reach $750..5 million<br />

and $495.8 million respectively over the same period<br />

last year.<br />

FOOD & BEVERAGE SECTOR PERFORM-<br />

ANCE FROM JANUARY TO <strong>SEPTEMBER</strong><br />

2002<br />

Cess paying establishments revenue for January to<br />

September 2002 posted a decline of 6.9% to<br />

$1,192.2 million compared to the same period last<br />

year.<br />

10. Hong Kong 207,564 (-3.9%)<br />

11. Thailand 197,179 (-0.1%)<br />

12. Taiwan 168,794 (-3.5%)<br />

Segment Performance<br />

Holiday arrivals from the top 12 markets registered<br />

a marginal drop of (0.2%). Markets that grew were<br />

China (+42.5%), India (+18.4%) Indonesia<br />

(+3.4%), South Korea (+2.3%) and Thailand<br />

(+0.5%).<br />

Business-related traffic fell 3.5%, caused primarily<br />

by the drop in business-related traffic from Hong<br />

Kong (-11.7%), Malaysia (-10.3%), Japan (-8.2%),<br />

Thailand (-8.2%) and UK (-6.4%).<br />

EXPLANATORY NOTES<br />

VISITOR ARRIVALS STATISTICS<br />

Source of Data<br />

Visitors arriving in <strong>Singapore</strong> are required to<br />

complete prescribed disembarkation/<br />

embarkation cards which serve as the source<br />

of statistics on visitor arrivals and departures.<br />

The accuracy of figures pertaining to the<br />

characteristics of visitors therefore depends on<br />

how accurately visitors complete these cards.<br />

Definitions<br />

visitor arrivals<br />

All visitors are classified by country of residence<br />

unless otherwise stated. Total visitor arrivals include<br />

all visitors coming by air and sea and non-<br />

Malaysian citizens coming by land.<br />

The term "ASEAN" stands for "Association of<br />

South East Asian Nations" and refers to the tencountry<br />

political association comprising<br />

Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Philippines,<br />

Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, <strong>Singapore</strong>, Thailand,<br />

and Vietnam. However, when used in the<br />

statistical tables, the term excludes <strong>Singapore</strong>.<br />

“CIS” denotes The Commonwealth of Independent<br />

States, which consists of Azerbaijan, Ukraine,<br />

Russian Federation, Uzbekistan, Armenia,<br />

Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Republic of<br />

Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Georgia.<br />

type of accommodation<br />

The type of accommodation given is compiled<br />

from visitors' responses to the disembarkation/<br />

embarkation cards. Hence, the tables analysed<br />

by this item reflect statements of intent.<br />

length of stay<br />

The length of stay shows the actual length of stay<br />

in <strong>Singapore</strong>. The date of arrival as indicated in<br />

the disembarkation/embarkation card is<br />

matched against the date of departure to compute<br />

the actual length of stay. As some visitors<br />

did not depart within the calendar year, the<br />

number of visitor departures would be less than<br />

the total visitor arrivals during the year.<br />

In computing the average length of stay, visitors<br />

staying beyond 60 days were treated as having<br />

stayed 60 days for comparability amongst the<br />

ASEAN countries. This is to ensure that the<br />

overall average length of stay is not affected by<br />

long-staying visitors.<br />

The number of visitor days for each market is<br />

the product of the respective visitor arrivals and<br />

average length of stay (using a 60-day cut-off<br />

point).<br />

"Scandinavia" comprises Denmark, Norway and<br />

Sweden.<br />

"n.e.c." denotes "not elsewhere classified".<br />

"In transit" visitors stay one day or less. Visitors<br />

staying one day are necessarily overnight visitors.<br />

Statistics on the demand and supply of gazetted<br />

hotel rooms and cess collection are based<br />

on monthly statutory returns submitted to<br />

<strong>Singapore</strong> <strong>Tourism</strong> <strong>Board</strong> since April 1994<br />

except for statistics on “rooms available” that<br />

published in the ‘Forecast on Gazetted Hotel<br />

Room Supply”. These figures are obtained<br />

from annual survey conducted by STB.<br />

cess rate has undergone changes as follows: 3%<br />

prior to 1990, 4% from January 1990 to March<br />

1991; 3% from April 1991 to March 1992 and<br />

4% from April 1992 to March 1994. With effect<br />

from 1 April 1994, the cess rate has been reduced<br />

to 1% following the introduction of a 3% Goods<br />

and Services Tax (GST).<br />
