<strong>Phys</strong>ician Perspective – The Good, Bad and Ugly.<br />

Rick A. Nishimura, MD, is currently a Consultant in<br />

Cardiovascular Diseases at <strong>Mayo</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> - Rochester and<br />

is the Judd and Mary Morris Professor of Cardiovascular<br />

Diseases. He is also Associate Chair of <strong>Clinic</strong>al Operations for the<br />

<strong>Mayo</strong> Cardiovascular Division, Associate Chair for the Department of<br />

<strong>Med</strong>icine, and Vice-Chair of the Rochester <strong>Mayo</strong> Hospital Practice<br />

Committee. Doctor Nishimura has been involved in education his<br />

entire career. He is the recipient of the <strong>Mayo</strong> CV Fellows Outstanding<br />

Teacher Award for 15 consecutive years and has been the <strong>Mayo</strong><br />

Graduate School Teacher of the Year six times, and inducted into the<br />

“Teacher of the Year Hall of Fame”. Participants will truly enjoy this<br />

opportunity to learn his perspective on joys and challenges relating to<br />

this collegial practice.


INTENDED AUDIENCE<br />

General Information<br />

The program is designed for nurse practitioners and physician assistants who care for<br />

patients with common medical problems. Family practitioners, general internists, and nurses<br />

interested in enhancing their delivery of care will also benefit from this program.<br />

COURSE DESCRIPTION<br />

This annual interdisciplinary course offers participants an overview of current topics in<br />

internal medicine including interactive case studies with a computer automated audience<br />

response system. <strong>Int</strong>erdisciplinary speakers present diverse clinical topics chosen for<br />

applicability to <strong>NP</strong>/PA practice settings. This year, topics such as valvular heart disease,<br />

evaluation of elevated liver function tests, links between erectile dysfunction and<br />

cardiovascular disease, gynecologic dermatology, sleep apnea, infectious diseases, pearls and<br />

pitfalls of pediatric orthopedics, dementia evaluation, preanesthesia exams, pediatric<br />

dermatology, preparing for international travel and other topics prominent in internal<br />

medicine will be featured. New this year is a hands-on workshop related to common<br />

musculoskeletal injections in the office setting. Dr. Edward T. Creagan, author of How NOT to<br />

be My Patient, will focus on how to empower patients to achieve maximum wellness. During<br />

the interactive auscultation session, participants gain experience with heart sounds utilizing a<br />

state-of-the-art infrared auscultation system.<br />

COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES<br />

At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:<br />

• Identify abnormal heart and lung sounds during auscultation workshop.<br />

• Discuss common abnormal findings on chest x-rays.<br />

• Discuss issues related to mandatory influenza immunizations for health care workers.<br />

• Describe the relationship between sleep apnea and cardiovascular disease.<br />

• Define important diagnostic interpretive markers for abnormal liver tests.<br />

• Identify the diagnostic evaluation and principles of musculoskeletal injections.<br />

• Differentiate common differential diagnoses in gynecologic dermatology.<br />

• Describe the clinical evaluation process to differentiate common dementias.<br />

• Identify the relationship between polycystic ovary syndrome and women’s heart disease.<br />

• Discuss recommendations for pre-anesthesia examination variations.<br />

• Identify assessment variables that influence states of wellness.<br />

• Describe the link between erectile dysfunction and heart disease.<br />

• Discuss the most recent pharmacologic recommendations for cardiovascular diseases.<br />

• Differentiate between common and uncommon pediatric exanthems.<br />

• Identify health considerations for international travel.<br />

• Describe useful diagnostic tips in pediatric orthopedics.<br />

• Discuss innovative roles for nurse practitioners and physician assistants.<br />

Attendance at this <strong>Mayo</strong> course does not indicate nor guarantee competence or proficiency in the<br />

performance of any procedures that may be discussed or taught in this course.<br />

CREDIT<br />

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essentials and<br />

Standards of the Accreditation Council for Continuing <strong>Med</strong>ical Education through the joint<br />

sponsorship of <strong>Mayo</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> College of <strong>Med</strong>icine, University of Minnesota Rochester,<br />

Association of Southeast Minnesota Nurse Practitioners, and Minnesota Academy of<br />

<strong>Phys</strong>ician Assistants. <strong>Mayo</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> College of <strong>Med</strong>icine is accredited by the AC<strong>CME</strong> to<br />

provide continuing medical education for physicians.<br />

<strong>Mayo</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> College of <strong>Med</strong>icine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 14<br />

category 1 credits towards the AMA <strong>Phys</strong>ician’s Recognition Award. Each physician should<br />

claim only those credits that he/she actually spent in the educational activity.<br />

Other health care professionals will be provided a certificate of attendance for requesting credits<br />

in accordance with state nursing boards, specialty societies, or other professional associations.


DATE AND LOCATION<br />

The <strong>Int</strong>ernal <strong>Med</strong>icine <strong>Rev</strong>iew for Nurse Practitioners and <strong>Phys</strong>ician Assistants will be<br />

held Thursday, September 15- Friday, September 16, 2005. Course headquarters will be<br />

located in Phillips Hall, First floor of the Siebens <strong>Med</strong>ical Education Building, 100 Second<br />

Avenue Southwest, Rochester, Minnesota. Meeting facilities are easily accessible by skyway<br />

and pedestrian subway, which connect <strong>Mayo</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> to shops, restaurants, and hotels.<br />

REGISTRATION<br />

To register, complete the attached registration form and return by mail or fax. Registration is<br />

also available on-line at http://www.mayo.edu/cme/sep2005.html. The registration fee<br />

includes tuition, course syllabus, daily continental breakfasts, refreshment breaks, and<br />

breakout sessions. A letter of confirmation will be sent upon receipt of payment and<br />

completed registration form. Please present this letter when checking in at the meeting<br />

registration desk.<br />

CALL FOR POSTERS<br />

Abstracts are now being accepted for consideration for poster presentations for conference<br />

participants. The conference committee invites individuals to submit posters that address<br />

innovative and or interdisciplinary clinical practice models involving nurse practitioners and/or<br />

physician assistants in any health care delivery setting. Please submit a 250 word paragraph<br />

describing an innovative practice model by July 1, 2005 and include the presenter(s) CV with<br />

You will be notified if your poster is accepted by July 22, 2005 and receive detailed<br />

information on the poster specifications and display requirements at that time. A waiver of<br />

50% of the registration cost of the conference will be provided for the primary author for<br />

posters accepted for display at the conference.<br />

CANCELLATION POLICY<br />

Your registration fee, less a $75 administrative fee, will be refunded when written notification<br />

is received by the <strong>Mayo</strong> School of Continuing <strong>Med</strong>ical Education by September 1, 2005. You<br />

may FAX written notification to 507-284-0532. No refunds will be made after this date.<br />

PARKING<br />

Parking is available in hotel, city, and <strong>Mayo</strong> patient/visitor ramps. The cost for parking is<br />

not included in the registration fee. A map indicating the location of downtown parking<br />

facilities will be mailed with the registrant confirmation letter.<br />

TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS<br />

Rochester, Minnesota, is a friendly city that greets thousands of visitors from around the<br />

world each year. The city is serviced by a modern international airport with multiple flights<br />

daily from Chicago and Minneapolis via American or Northwest Airlines. Access to and<br />

from the airport is provided by taxi cab and shuttle service. The airport is located<br />

approximately 10 miles from the <strong>Mayo</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> complex.<br />
