COURSE DESCRIPTION
The Division of Primary Care Internal
Medicine is pleased to offer this one-day
program to provide attendees with current
information on the care of the elderly,
including clinical evaluation, management
strategies and innovative practice models.
All topics are selected for their clinical
relevance. Time is allocated for questions
and discussion.
COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon conclusion of this program,
participants should be able to:
• Describe key prognostic elements &
hospice criteria for common, chronic
life-threatening conditions of the elderly
• Formulate effective management
strategies for patients with advanced COPD
• Discuss common causes and treatment
options for elderly patients with
constipation
• Appraise new drugs and new uses for
existing drugs that are pertinent to
geriatric practice
• Discuss assessment, management, and
prevention strategies for common
complications occurring in hospitalized
elderly patients
• Develop an appreciation of the skills
needed to be a Transitional Care Team
member
• Outline the appropriate indications, safety,
and role of laboratory monitoring with
use of oral coagulation factor inhibitors

INTENDED AUDIENCE
This course is designed for primary care
physicians including family practitioners,
internists, general practitioners, advanced
nurse practitioners, physician assistants,
and those who care for elderly patients in
the community, assisted living, and nursing
home settings.
CREDIT
Mayo Clinic College of Medicine is
accredited by the Accreditation Council for
Continuing Medical Education to provide
continuing medical education for physicians.
Mayo Clinic College of Medicine
designates this live activity for a maximum
of 6.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.
Physicians should claim only the credit
commensurate with the extent of their
participation in the activity.
Application for CME credit has been filed
with the American Academy of Family
Physicians. Determination of credit is
pending.
DATE AND LOCATION
The Geriatric Update for the Primary Care
Provider course is held Thursday,
November 14, 2013. Course headquarters
are located in Leighton Auditorium on the
second floor of the Siebens Building, Mayo
Clinic, 100 Second Avenue Southwest,
Rochester, Minnesota.

The registration fee includes tuition,
continental breakfast, refreshment breaks,
box lunch and comprehensive course
syllabus.
A letter of confirmation will be sent upon
receipt of payment and completed
registration form. Please present this letter
when checking in at the meeting
registration desk.
CANCELLATION POLICY
If you cancel your participation in this
course, your registration fee, less a $75
administrative fee, will be refunded when
written notification is received by Mayo
School of CPD before October 31, 2013
