Course Description
Whether you are a seasoned Hospitalist, or
new to the inpatient arena, the 6th annual
Hospital Medicine for Nurse Practitioners
and Physician Assistants (NPPAs) will
fill your CME needs. Hospitalist NPPAs
are one of the fastest growing segments
of the medical workforce. This annual
conference emphasizes clinical management
of hospitalized patients in an interactive,
case-based format with evidence-based
lectures by experts in Nephrology, Infectious
Disease, Endocrinology, Pulmonary and
Critical Care Medicine, Vascular Medicine,
Cardiology, Oncology, Hematology,
Radiology, Gastroenterology, Psychiatry,
Neurology, and Hospital Medicine. Whether
urgently assessing an unstable patient, or
applying guidelines and treatment pathways
in a diagnostic workup, this course will help
prepare the attendee for the rigors of the
hospital environment.
WORKSHOP--This pre-course workshop will
be an intensive one day workshop with focus
in commonly encountered bedside procedures
for the hospitalized patient that integrates
both didactic and simulation based learning
into an experiential learning curriculum that
emphasizes knowledge and practice behavior.
It arms the participant with the knowledge
and skills to complete commonly occurring
bedside procedures.
Course Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this program, participants
should be able to:
• Analyze the future of hospital medicine
and examine the vital role NP/PAs will
play providing care for hospitalized
patients.
• Describe a rational approach to assessment
and management of the hospitalized
patient.
• Identify current, clinically
oriented, evidence-based practice
recommendations in specialties such as
cardiology, endocrinology, infectious
disease, psychiatry, pulmonology,
gastroenterology, and hospital medicine.
• Initiate appropriate and timely
consultation and/or referral.
• Describe an approach to rate control
and rhythm control strategies in atrial
fibrillation.
• Describe the FDA-approved uses for novel
anticoagulants.

not indicate nor guarantee competence
or proficiency in the performance of any
procedures which may be discussed or taught
in this course.
Intended Audience
Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants
working in the hospital are the primary
audience target. However, content is very
applicable to Hospitalist physicians, inpatient
pharmacists, nurses, and other allied health
staff primarily caring for hospitalized patients.
Credit
Mayo Clinic College of Medicine is accredited
by the Accreditation Council for Continuing
Medical Education to provide continuing
medical education for physicians.
Mayo Clinic College of Medicine designates
this live activity for a maximum of 19.25
AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. (A maximum
of 6.25 credits are available through a skills
workshop.) Physicians should claim only the
credit commensurate with the extent of their
participation in the activity.

Participants can earn up to 19.08 nursing
contact hours (accredited).
Other Health Care Professionals
A certificate of attendance will be provided
to other health care professionals for
requesting credits in accordance with state
nursing boards, specialty societies, or other
professional associations.

comprehensive course syllabus, continental

reception. Although it is not Mayo School of
Continuous Professional Development (CPD)
policy to limit the number of registrants
for a course, conference room facilities may
necessitate closing of enrollment; therefore,
early registration is advised. A letter of
confirmation will be sent upon receipt of
payment and completed registration form.
Cancellation Policy
If you cancel your participation in this course,
your registration fee, less a $75 administrative
fee, will be refunded when written notification
is received by Mayo School of CPD before
April 30, 2014 (cme@mayo.edu or fax#: 507-
284-0532). No refunds will be made on or
after April 30, 2014. Canceled registrations
are non-transferable.
Mayo School of CPD reserves the right
to cancel or postpone any course due to
unforeseen circumstances. In the unlikely
event Mayo School of CPD must cancel or
postpone this course, Mayo School of CPD
will refund the registration fee, but is not
responsible for any related costs, charges,
or expenses to participants, including fees
assessed by airline/travel/lodging agencies.

modern international airport with multiple
flights daily via American or Delta Airlines.

the Mayo Clinic campus.
