General Information<br />

Course Description<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Stiff</strong> <strong>Elbow</strong> is an advanced course on the surgical treatment of the elbow. <strong>The</strong><br />

<strong>Stiff</strong> <strong>Elbow</strong> will have live surgery demonstrations highlighting the latest surgical<br />

techniques in the treatment of the stiff elbow. Panel discussions, didactic<br />

sessions, and technique video presentations are an integral part of the overall<br />

learning experience. <strong>The</strong>re will be many opportunities to interact with the<br />

national and international faculty of sub-specialists.<br />

Course Objectives<br />

Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:<br />

• Diagnose <strong>Elbow</strong> <strong>Stiff</strong>ness.<br />

• Distinguish the difference between elbow distraction and interposition<br />

Arthroplasty.<br />

• Predict which elbows will remain unstable and the appropriate treatments to use.<br />

• Recognize and apply the indications and appropriate treatments of stiff elbows.<br />

Attendance at this <strong>Mayo</strong> course does not indicate nor guarantee competence or<br />

proficiency in the performance of any procedures which may be discussed or<br />

taught in this course.<br />

Credit<br />

<strong>Mayo</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> College of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for<br />

Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for<br />

physicians.<br />

<strong>Mayo</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> College of Medicine designates this educational activity for a<br />

maximum of 12 category 1 credits toward the AMA Physician’s Recognition<br />

Award. Each physician should claim only those credits that he/she actually<br />

spent in the activity.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Stiff</strong> <strong>Elbow</strong> will be held May 19-20, 2006. Course headquarters will be located<br />

in <strong>The</strong> Marriott Plaza Hotel Ballroom and in Leighton Auditorium, second floor<br />

of the Sieben’s Building, <strong>Mayo</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong>, 100 Second Avenue Southwest, Rochester,<br />

Minnesota. Meeting facilities are easily accessible by skyway and pedestrian<br />

subway, which connect <strong>Mayo</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> to shops, restaurants, and hotels.

Special Guest Faculty<br />

Mark S. Cohen, M.D.<br />

“Teach the Teacher’<strong>The</strong> <strong>Stiff</strong> <strong>Elbow</strong> is honored to have Dr. Mark S. Cohen as our<br />

special guest. Dr. Cohen has been the Director of the Orthopaedic Hand and<br />

<strong>Elbow</strong> Section at Rush since 1993, and he currently serves as the Director of<br />

Orthopaedic Education in the Department. He has won several research,<br />

teaching and achievement awards and is a member of 16 national and<br />

international medical societies and associations.<br />

Dr. Cohen was selected one of Chicago’s “Top Doctors” in Hand and Orthopaedic<br />

Surgery by Chicago Magazine in 1997, 2001, 2004 and again in 2006. His clinical<br />

and research interests focus on fractures and reconstruction of the hand, wrist<br />

and elbow with a special emphasis on minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Cohen is<br />

well recognized for his contributions to our understanding and treatment of the<br />

elbow through his many presentations and publications.<br />

Travel<br />

Rochester, Minnesota, is a friendly city that greets thousands of visitors from<br />

around the world each year. <strong>The</strong> city is serviced by a modern international<br />

airport with multiple flights daily from Chicago, Detroit, Dallas-Fort Worth, and<br />

Minneapolis via American or Northwest Airlines. Access to and from the<br />

airport is provided by taxi, shuttle service, and rental car. <strong>The</strong> airport is located<br />

approximately 10 miles from the <strong>Mayo</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> campus.<br />

Should you require a larger variety in flight options, there is shuttle service<br />

available from Minneapolis to Rochester. Minneapolis is approximately 70 miles<br />

north of Rochester. Rochester Direct, a local shuttle company offers service daily.<br />

<strong>The</strong>ir schedule is available on www.rochesterdirect.com . Reservations are<br />

strongly encouraged.<br />

Note to Travelers: Several cities in the United States are named Rochester. When<br />

you make airline reservations and check your baggage, be sure that your destination<br />

Public Tours of <strong>Mayo</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> are provided each day of the week beginning at<br />

10:00 am, except for holidays. <strong>The</strong> tours originate from Judd Auditorium,<br />

Subway Level of the <strong>Mayo</strong> Building, and last approximately 1.5 hours. <strong>The</strong> tour<br />

includes a 20-minute film on the history and operation of the <strong>Mayo</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> plus<br />

visits to points of interest in the <strong>Mayo</strong>, Plummer and Hilton Buildings. Please<br />

make advance reservations by calling 507-538-1091.<br />

Mall of America, the largest fully-enclosed retail and family entertainment<br />

complex in the United States, is an easy 90-minute drive or shuttle ride from<br />

Rochester, Minnesota. Along with 500 retail stores, restaurants, and nightclubs,<br />

the mall features Knott’s Camp Snoopy, the world’s largest indoor theme park,<br />

and UnderWater World, a walk through an aquarium featuring 15,000 fish.<br />

Rochester Direct shuttle service will pick up at all local hotels, and departs every<br />

two hours from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. <strong>The</strong> cost is $34 per person same day round<br />

number of registrants for a course, conference room facilities may necessitate<br />

closing of enrollment; therefore, early registration is advised. A letter of<br />

confirmation will be sent upon receipt of payment and completed registration<br />

Cancellation Policy<br />

If you cancel your participation in this course, your registration fee, less a $75<br />

administrative fee, will be refunded when written notification is received by<br />

<strong>Mayo</strong> School of CME before May 5, 2006 (fax#: 507-284-0532). No refunds will be<br />

made after May 5, 2006.<br />

<strong>Mayo</strong> School of CME reserves the right to cancel or postpone any course due to<br />
