OWNING
AUTHENTIC
For so long I’ve lived with a pit in my stomach. I er knew exactly what was wrong but it was as if some-
nevthing
deep inside was gnawing at me. Something that
wouldn’t let me fully buy into the life my logic and mind
created. I was living on the surface – looking at the ‘on
paper’ version of what should make me happy. Sure
the picture was pretty enough but something on such
a deep and subconscious level was preventing me from
being truly happy.
It was only after my life had been literally flipped upside
down, was I really forced to take stock & trade of what
was working for me and what wasn’t. There’s nothing like
having to rebuild every single thing in your life from the
ground up to get you to rethink your method and this
time I was going to make sure there weren’t any cracks
in the foundation. Why was I making the choices I had
made? Why did I choose the people I had?
I knew I had to get to my truth, find out what I was really
about, honor the facts about myself and live true to them
without apologies and equally without spite or malice
to the rest of the world. It’s a space where my beliefs,
morals, words and actions all are the same. It’s a place of
freedom & acceptance – It’s really only by living authentically
that I can be free.
THESE ARE SOME OF THE
WAYS I PRACTICE LIVING
AUTHENTICALLY:
#1 R.I.P OLD IDEAS – IT’S BEEN ‘REAL’
We all have these old tapes telling us what is acceptable,
what’s good enough, what’s ‘normal’ and what’s
not. The one thing I can tell you for certain is that these
ideas didn’t come from YOU so why are you letting them
define how you live your life? Redefine the answers to
these questions based on the deepest parts of yourself
and start honoring that voice inside you regardless of
what other people think.
4 ZEN LIVING MAGAZINE
BY JAIME LEE, FOUNDER OF ZEN LIVING MAGAZINE
#2 DITCH THE SHOULDS IN YOUR LIFE
Here’s the thing, there is no single way to do life so stop
trying to follow suit. It would be a dull and boring world
if we thought, acted and did the same thing. The only
thing you SHOULD be doing is listening to what your
Inner Voice is telling you and trusting it! I guarantee if
you keep following that, you will end up exactly where
you are supposed to be.
#3 LEARN HOW TO LISTEN
TO YOUR BODY
For me sometimes it’s easier to know what the wrong
thing is before I know what is right. If I am going against
my gut and Inner Voice, I can literally feel it in my body.
I might have a tight stomach, racing heart or tense muscles.
I might not be able to focus. When I am doing the
right thing and when I am being true to myself, I feel
free and expansive. I feel light and open. Learn to pay
attention to these physical cues so that you can check
in with yourself to know whether you are living authentically
or not.
The benefit of owning your authenticity is that you lose all
judgment of yourself and others, become less dependent
on the approval of others and will live in less conflict with
yourself and the world.
Practice these three tips daily and watch your life change
completely & transform!
The Truth About
Acupuncture
By Joshua Goldstein
Integrative cupuncture enter, Ridgewood,
1Acupuncture is not just for pain:
Most people who have received
acupuncture or have read about
acupuncture will say that it is for pain.
This of course is true, but many who
come in for pain start to realize that acupuncture
is a great “stress reduction”
therapy session. Working long hours
in ew ersey with plenty of traffic and
commuter stress, people are desperate
for relief from the “grind” of physical
and mental stress. Acupuncture helps
to center, relax, and calm people down.
And you know what? It’s okay to feel that
way!
I had a Type A patient who asked me to
help her with her pain but made it clear
that she did not want to feel relaxed after
the session. (She did and eventually
left!) Acupuncture releases endorphins
and helps tone the para-sympathetic
nervous system so take your mind and
body from a stressed fight or flight
response to a profoundly deep and relaxed
state of mind and body. You may
not know that acupuncture is currently
being used in the military to help troops
deal with the physical and psychological
manifestations of Post Traumatic
Stress Syndrome as well as for back
pain, headache, insomnia an traumatic
injuries. I always tell my patients that
acupuncture squeezes the body to utilize
it’s own resources better. The needles
send the signals to the body to do
this.
2Acupuncture needles pinch but
they don’t hurt!
This by far is the most common
fear preventing people from giving acupuncture
a try. So here’s the deal. Acupuncture
needles are slightly bigger
than a cat’s whisker. Nothing is injected
into the needles, which makes them extremely
small.
A slight pinch may be felt when inserted
into the skin, but it does not cause
the pain associated with hollow hypodermic
needles, the kind of feeling that
most people fear when going to the
doctor.
3What do the needles do?
Once the needles are inserted,
they start working their magic,
which is where the relaxation part
comes in. It chills out the nervous system,
decreases muscular tension, and
helps quiet the internal chatter.
People who get acupuncture on a regular
basis are familiar with the term “aculand”.
This is a state of blissful relaxation
in which you feel lighter, calmer, and
better equipped to manage stress.
If you are struggling with chronic physical
or emotional health issues or just
want a higher level of balance in your
life, consider incorporating acupuncture
into your wellness regimen.
Cut Your Workout Time in Half &
Get Even BETTER Results with
THESE 10 KEY FACTORS
by Dana Lee Chapman, Fitness Coach & Master Instructor, Founder of RealFit.tv
We are all looking for a short cut to a better body fter training hundreds of women men for the past years,
one thing is for certain, the better you feel about yourself, the easier it is to feel happier in all other areas of your life
too. So, wouldn’t it be nice if we could shave off some time & cut to the chase?
There are key factors in maimiing your time while you are working out, regardless of the type of eercise you choose,
so you are no longer a slave to your workouts. These factors apply to all activity & can affect your very next workout. It’s time
for faster results with far less of a time commitment!
If youd prefer to follow along to my training video, go to Realittv enter your name email That will bring you to a page
with more explanation on each of the following points. This article can be used as a follow-along worksheet.
1
1. Are you tracking your burn with the RIGHT heart rate
monitor or device?
The right heart rate monitor will help you truly measure the
intensity you are putting into your workouts. It’s not just for
the calorie burn, it’s to show you how hard you are pushing.
It’s an “honesty” device.
2
2. Are you well hydrated?
osing even of fluid from your body will slow your metabolism
down. It’s vital to sip water throughout your workout,
but even more importantly, stay hydrated the rest of
the day.
3
3. How well-rested are you?
Over-training slows the rate of effectiveness in your workout
Rest days are crucial to seeing results faster I know that
seems counter-intuitive. But, muscles are tissues that tear &
need time for repair. Working out back-to-back only breaks
them down further.
4
4. Are your hormone levels in balance?
Stress can impact metabolism & therefore calorie burn. Too
much cardio such as cycling or running can have a negative
impact on your hormone balance. If your cortisol levels
are high on a consistent basis, your body will be in constant
state of holding onto fat for survival. Which leads me to….
5
5 Are you strength training?
The more lean muscle you have, the more calories you
burn. Strength training will also do wonders for balancing
your hormone levels ess cardio, more strength times
per week) & you will see changes in your physique faster
than any other training method.
6
6. Are you performing exercises with proper form?
Using the full range of motion can easily double your calorie
burn. If you are unsure of proper form, it is always best
to work with a personal trainer. However, I coach extensively
on form in my videos on Realittv
7
7. Are you being honest & working at the proper
intensity with every workout?
Don’t half-ass it or you will also half-ass your calorie burn.
oing back to , a heart rate monitor will keep you honest
8
8. Do you breathe fully & completely during your
workouts?
Deep, full breathing will dramatically improve your calorie
burn.
9
9. Are you eating at least 90 minutes before your
workout?
our blood will either digest R go to your muscles ive
time to digest & all effort will be in the muscles.
10
1. Have you consumed alcohol 24 hours before your
workout?
lcohol slows the metabolism for hours after consumption.
ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK BOX COLOR
by Angela Alba, Master Certified Organic Hair Colorist
10
THE BAD & THE UGLY
Corrosive Ammonia
Most permanent hair color from a
box works through the use of
ammonia. The corrosive nature of
ammonia irreversibly changes the
hair’s pH to an undesirable level.
Not to mention that ammonia
damages the hair’s natural
Tyrosine levels; Tyrosine is a
naturally occurring amino acid that
makes up the protein in your hair
and is responsible for the natural
pigment. Ammonia damages your
scalp’s sebaceous oil glands,
inhibiting its ability to create the
hair’s natural oils that contribute to
your hair’s much needed moisture.
Remember this formula for healthy
hair: Protein + Moisture + Proper
pH.
High Levels Of PPD’s
Box colors contain superfluous
amounts of pigment and
developer. What does that mean
for you? Well, the pigment we are
referring to is the pigment
necessary for all PERMANENT hair
color, p- phenylenediamine., also
known as PPD. Unfortunately, box
color has an excessive amount of
PPDs, causing an increase in
allergies worldwide, as more and
more individuals are dying their
hair. Hair dye allergies are on the
rise, causing unsightly reactions
and in some cases, fatality. What’s
worse? You may not be allergic to
PPD this time, but with continued
high exposure to this chemical you
can become sensitive at any time!
It is advised to seek out a
permanent hair color line with low
PPD and no derivatives, so that
likelihood for an allergic reaction is
significantly decreased.
ZEN LIVING MAGAZINE
Let’s face it, most of you box color users out there did not attend
cosmetology school, and are lacking what we in the business call the “laws
of color.” You probably aren’t sure exactly what color your hair is when the
color is processing or when to take off the color to achieve your most
desired result. You probably don’t know what colors to mix to cancel out
undesired tones in your hair, and we don’t expect you to. But, because of
these reasons box color is more like a box of chocolates, you never know
what you’re gonna get. Here are some important things to know!
!
1. One Size Does Not Fit All
So, let’s think about this logically. Box color is formulated so that everyone and anyone can use it,
but not everyone’s hair type, condition or color is even remotely the same. In fact, most box dyes
are formulated with maximum amounts of pigment and developer, so that it is able to work on most
people. The chances are if you have already dyed your hair previously, your processed hair isn’t
going to need that strong of a developer; don’t damage it more by getting one size fits all, box
color. You do not want this ‘one size fits all’ mentality when choosing your hair color, give yourself
customization and expert knowledge, and seek a hair professional who will be able to accurately
create a color for you and only YOU!
2. Regrowth Trouble
Again, you probably thought your regrowth would look like the rest of your head because that’s
what the pretty lady on the box looks like, right? WRONG! I know this may seem repetitive, but it’s
all about the ability to customize. Your regrowth is virgin hair, and the remainder of your head is
more than likely already processed, or has seen some damage due to UV exposure or styling. Think
you can pair up a good box color for your regrowth and pair it with the right box color for the rest of
your hair without look like two different colors? Didn’t think so, leave it to the professionals.
3. Box Color is Only One Color
This idea ties in both Number 2 and Number 3. We already know that your regrowth will need a
different color formulation than the rest of your head, but how about when you want some actual
dimension? Or how about if you want a hair color that takes a little more skill than an all over color
application, like the much sought after, ombre look? You will not be able to achieve that with the
one color present in a box. Note: Most hairdressers never use less than 2 different colors to mix your
desired color – customization!

So, you decided not to listen to the other 5 reasons because you still think you know best. Well,
orange you the hair expert? We say orange, because that is often the color your hair will turn when
attempting to color (especially lighten) with box color. Do your hair and wallet a favor, don’t spend
$10 on box color, and then $300 on a color correction. Great color only accents what you wear
everyday single day - your hair!
IN MY
OWN
WORDS
From Exhausted to Exhilarated: My Hashimoto’s Story
When I was pregnant with my first child I felt tired,
but not like the tired other pregnant women were
describing. I felt so tired I could hardly get out of
bed, hardly read my “how to be a good mom” books, hardly
eat enough before I would be sick again, and hardly enough
to care. My OB told me it was normal to be “sleepy” and as
a side note kept upping my thyroid meds with each monthly
visit fter my daughter was born, I still felt tired, but I figured
all new moms did. I assumed it was normal to be too
fatigued to lift my arms up high enough to rock my baby to
sleep. I didn’t want to be dramatic, so I didn’t mention it. My
OB took me off thyroid meds and sent me on my merry way.
A few months later I met an amazing chiropractor who was
treating my daughter for torticollis. Dr. Meyers took one look
at me, and how tired I was, and openly hinted that I might
need some help. I went to see her three times for adjustments
before she told me that she suspected I had Hashimotos
disease I got blood work done, to confirm, and it came
back with flashing neon lights positive for ashimotos he
explained Hashimoto’s and that I had a non-functioning thyroid,
which is unfortunate since your thyroid regulates your
metabolism and effects many aspects of your body, including
energy. My own body was attacking my thyroid until it
couldn’t perform its job anymore, leaving me listless and fatigued.
I still didn’t fully understand, so she recommended
a Hashimoto’s specialist she thought I should see. That day.
I thought cutting cheese and bread out of my life would be
so monstrous that I wouldn’t be able to manage it. But after
the initial period of kicking my cravings, and learning how to
grocery shop in a completely new way, I felt great. I felt better
than great. I felt like an entirely new person. I had suffered
chronic migraines my whole life and realized that it was, in
huge part, due to my diet. I now had more energy and less
headaches and my thyroid was finally showing up to work
When my daughter was nine months old I started to feel a
little tired again and I was really disappointed. I thought that
maybe all my hard work wasn’t paying off after all. After I
realized I was expecting baby number two instead, Dr Myers
and I worked together throughout my pregnancy (and the
following one) to make sure my thyroid behaved itself and I
have never looked back. I am in the midst of training for my
first full marathon and have more energy than I did in my
twenties.
Hashimoto’s is, unfortunately, a very common disease that
can have a huge array of symptoms. The thyroid is an immensely
important part of your body and it needs to be
checked regularly to make sure it is working for you. If you
do find yourself diagnosed with it, dont panic because with
the right diet, medication and supplement plan everything
can be put to right and you might even end up better than
before.
Working with Dr. Meyers (my Hashimoto’s guru) has changed
my life. I started a new eating lifestyle that excludes gluten,
dairy, corn and soy and includes supplements like “Adaptocrine”
that helps my adrenal glands “speak” to my pituitary
gland, hypothalamus and thyroid more fluidly, vitamin
which thyroid patients are seriously lacking in, iron supplements,
probiotics, fish oil, drena stim to help my adrenal
glands and others. She explained that I had to balance out
my hormones, my stress, my eating habits and my thyroid
medication to keep inflammation down so that my body had
a chance to put the guns down (that are pointed at myself)
and relax, allowing my thyroid to be able to do at least part
of its job.
TENNIS + STEROIDS =
CARDIO
TENNIS
By Andrew Sirota
I
have been a tennis rofessional for over years I have coached all levels, and all ages of players I have learned and
trained under some of the best tennis minds in the world. Basically, I have seen a lot of tennis in my career and in my life.
I have a passion for the game and feel more at ease on a tennis court then anywhere else in the world. I thought I loved
what I did for a living Then, approimately years ago, I found the true love of my tennis career I was introduced to
Cardio Tennis!
What is cardio tennis?
According to the Tennis Industry Association,
“cardio tennis is a high energy
fitness activity that combines the best
features of the sport of tennis with cardiovascular
exercise, delivering the ultimate,
full body, calorie burning aerobic
and anaerobic workout.” According to
me it is tennis on steroids. A proper Cardio
Tennis experience should include
music, heart rate monitors, an agility
ladder and Cardio balls. The only other
essential element is a group of people
who want to have fun and get a great
workout without even realizing they are
working out.
A typical Cardio Tennis workout consists
of a minute warmup,
minutes of Cardio games and drills, and
finally a minute cool down I tell
people when they first participate that
we want to get there heart rate going
slowly for the first minutes and
then rev it up to their optimal heart rate
zone and keep it there for most of the
class. Then we will take their heart rate
back down to a normal rate so that they
can walk out and resume their daily activities
feeling great.
Cardio Tennis balls are low compression
balls. These tennis balls equalize the
playing field and keep the court safe
They also allow for the improvement
of a player’s stroke mechanics. They
allow for player to get to everything,
which will improve foot speed. In addition,
the low compression ball makes
it difficult to put the ball away during a
point, which leads to more creative shot
selection and stroke production by all
players.
The beauty of Cardio Tennis is the energy
and enthusiasm created in the
environment on the court. The music
is pumping and loud about beats
per minute) and players tend to move
more when their workout is set to music.
. This creates a fun and exciting
backdrop to an activity that frankly most
Why Cardio Tennis?
I personally have always hated working
out just for the sake of working out. I
didn’t mind training to improve my play
on the court but as I got older, I realized
that maintaining a fitness level is much
more difficult, as well as much less fun
Cardio tennis allows for me to play the
sport I love while getting the workout I
need. I always ask players if they think
that their game will improve if they can
get to the ball sooner or in a more balanced
position? The player undoubtedly
answers yes, and becomes the
newest student in my Cardio Tennis
program!
How
CULTURED
By Audrey Laurelton
Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN)
Are You?
oth in your gut and out there in the world, there are beneficial, or
“good,” bacteria, and there are pathogenic, or “bad,” bacteria. Maintaining
the correct balance between the two is necessary for optimal health.
Factors such as medications, diet, disease, lack of sleep, emotional
stress, and environmental toxins can upset that balance. Probiotics can
be used to restore the balance, preventing or alleviating various bodily
maladies, particularly those that affect the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.

The word probiotic comes from the Greek word pro,
meaning “promoting” and biotic, meaning “life.” The
Food and Agriculture Organization of the United
ations defines probiotics as live microorganisms,
which when administered in adequate amounts,
confer a health benefit on the host es, they are actually
alive, and most of these microorganisms are
bacteria, similar to the beneficial microorganisms
that are naturally found in the gut n estimated
trillion microorganisms representing more than
different species inhabit every normal, healthy GI
tract. These microorganisms normally aid in digestion,
synthesize vitamins and nutrients, metabolize
some medications, support the development and
functioning of the gut, and enhance the immune
system.
Probiotics play an important role in the body’s natural
defense system by boosting the healthy flora
the immunoglobins produced by Gut-Associated
ymphoid Tissue, which makes up percent of the
bodys total immunitywhich in turn crowds out the
pathogenic bacteria y fortifying your gutyour
bodys main barrier to infection, probiotics not only
stave off infections in your stomach (Helicobacter pylori),
skin (Staphylococcus aureus), and vagina (Candidiasis),
but they can be used to prevent, suppress,
and treat diarrhea, including diarrhea resulting from
antibiotics.
When the immune system is weakened, it can result
There is even emerging
research that suggests
probiotics play a role
in the detoxification of
carcinogenic substances,
possibly reducing the risk
of colon cancer.
in allergic reactions and autoimmune disorders. Probiotics
have been shown to help ease the symptoms of food allergies
and reduce eczema in children. Additionally, probiotics
can help prevent or treat the symptoms of various
digestive inflammations such as pouchitis or Irritable owel
Syndrome, including those caused by Crohn’s disease and
ulcerative colitis. By secreting lactase, probiotics ease digestion
for the lactose intolerant, providing the enzyme
they need to help break down milk sugar. There is even
emerging research that suggests probiotics play a role in
the detoification of carcinogenic substances, possibly reducing
the risk of colon cancer.
Probiotics are found in fermented foods. Fermented dairy
products such as yogurt and kefir are the most common
All yogurts contain probiotics, but to ensure you’re getting
the optimal benefit, opt for those that contain live and
active cultures. If you’re looking for non-dairy–based “yogurts,”
those made from rice, soy, or coconut milk frequently
contain added probiotics that deliver the same benefits
Search, too, for other fermented foods such as sauerkraut,
miso, Brewer’s yeast, kombucha, or micro algae; just be
sure the label indicates it contains “live and active cultures”
to reap the probiotic benefits
Since probiotics are already present in a normal digestive
system, they are contraindicated for those who are immune-compromised
or have intestinal bleeding. Try including
them into your diet for two weeks; keep in mind probiotics
must be continually replenished, shortly after you stop
taking them their benefits stop, too dditionally, health
benefits are strainspecific, and not all strains are necessarily
useful; L. reuteri, for example, can help reduce eczema
and colic in babies. For additional information, consult a
registered dietitian familiar with probiotics to discuss your
options. As always, let your primary care provider know
what you’re doing.
NO-GUILT,
NO-BAKE
Desserts
by Tara Ryazansky
I don’t think anyone told my sweet-tooth that it’s a million
degrees outside. Despite how badly I am craving a freshly
baked cookie, I refuse to turn on my oven.
I admit, I indulge my love of sweets frequently, but I like to
opt for homemade, healthier treats. It’s cheaper that way
too. When you avoid ingredients like dairy or gluten, a box
of sweets could end up costing a fortune.
No-bake desserts are a great option when it’s hot outside.
Plus it makes it easy to indulge in a healthier way. You could
even stick to a raw food plan.
I am always whipping up bars and balls made of combinations
of nuts and dried fruits. Someday I’ll share those recipes
here, but I wanted to make something that screamed
summer, so I thought of parfaits.
Parfaits are great because you can use what you have on
hand, they’re visually gorgeous and deliciously cool and
creamy. You could also get away with serving them for
brunch. Just cut down on the sweetener. With fresh berries
and fruit you’ll hardly need it anyway!
Berry Patriotic Parfait
This parfait reminds me of the summer cookouts that my
family had when I was a kid. My mom always made an
merican flag cake with sponge cake, whipped topping
and berries. This healthy version barely takes longer to
make than my moms recipe It satisfies my sweettooth and
is antioxidant-rich and high-protein.
batch of ashew ream
Strawberries, chopped
Blueberries
¼ cup almonds
cup unsweetened coconut flakes
These recipes use cashew cream as the main attraction. It’s
sweet and creamy but lighter than dairy-based custards. It’s
simple to make and you won’t have to stand over the stove.
et creative dd any flavoring you like to customie it to
your tastes. Use raw cashews instead of roasted, they have
a plainer taste that mixes well with other ingredients.
Pulse almonds until chopped. Add coconut. Toast if you’d
like. Layer red, white and blue, dusting the berries with
some almond crunch akes servings
cup raw cashews, soaked
½ cup water
tablespoons agave, honey or pure maple syrup
pinch of salt
Puree until completely smooth.
Peanut Butter Cup
The decadent combo of peanut butter and chocolate is
hands-down, my favorite. My husband feels the same way,
which has been great when it comes to splitting desserts!
This parfait kills my peanut butter cup craving in a healthier
way The chocolatey, fiberrich chia pudding goes perfectly
with peanut butter.
batch of cashew cream
¼ cup peanut butter
¼ cup roasted peanuts
¼ almonds
¼ cup chia seeds
cups almond milk
¼ cup cocoa powder
tablespoons pure maple syrup
Combine bottom list ingredients in a jar overnight. Shake
periodically while ingredients thicken. Chop nuts coarsely.
Layer the pudding, nuts, cashew cream and peanut butter.
Key Lime Pie Parfait
Tart yet sweet, creamy key lime pie is the ideal summertime
treat. Lime infused Cashew Cream is a cool alternative to
the recipes that call for plenty of sugar and sweetened condensed
milk y version comes together in a flash and is
full of nutritionally vital whole foods. My daughter loves this
tangy dessert so coming up with a healthy version was important
to me.
batch of cashew cream
limes or ey imes, uiced
¼ cup dates
cup unsweetened coconut flakes
½ cup almond
tablespoon maple syrup
pinch of salt
Mix lime juice and cashew cream, adding more for a
tarter taste. Pulse other ingredients and layer the crust mixture
Enhancing the Athlete
Through Energy Medicine
By Dr. John T. Cece
hat is a scientific doctor like me doing writing an article
on nergy edicine? That is a good uestion The first time
I took a seminar to study nergy edicine, I came out for
the first water break asking myself the same thing ust like
many of you, my mind was not trained to understand it.
In fact, it was so foreign to me I considered leaving and going
home! Instead, I stuck it out through that seminar. Back
at the office, I put my new lessons to use and began to see
the benefits for my patients first hand This spurred me on to
continue studying further and implementing nergy edi
cine into my chiropractic practice.
The easiest way to define nergy edicine is to say that it is
any method of communicating with the body to determine
an area that is in need of care, and then providing that specific
care The human body is broken down into its tiniest
pieces and viewed as energy. Application of this quantum
mechanical view to the body is called biocentrism. So, when
I am using nergy edicine, I am addressing the energetic
body” and working with the body’s energies to effect and
awaken the healing processes within.
One critical point to understand is that quantum mechanical
effects are not exotic or only relevant under extreme conditions.
The reality is that they are at play in our day-to-day regimes
right where biology, chemistry and matter operate. If
we view an injury as a trauma, then there will be a disruption
of matter, in this case joint, muscle or ligament, and also in
“energy” in the form of an emotion attached to that trauma.
Clearly, you can see why the integration of physical medicine
with nergy edicine can be so powerful and benefi
cial. This is precisely why I have an advantage working with
an athlete, or any patient for that matter.
Richard oldberg, a nited tates enior lympian, is a
perfect eample of how nergy edicine enhances an ath
lete. I examined him prior to his competing for, and attaining,
the ational ranking in his category for the lympic
lifts, the “clean and jerk”, and the “snatch”. First, I looked for
any physical distortion and emotional perturbation that may
block his performance, and, then, we acted pro-actively as
well, and “locked in” a positive visualization using very gentle
cranial adjusting to his sphenoid bones.
pplying nergy edicine also aids my ability to be a di
agnostic detective. For example, in addition to my regular
physical analysis, I used nergy edicine to find and adust
the st metacarpal ray of the foot of shling tanek, the
reigning US National Champion in Irish Dance.
Benefits of Using Energy Medicine In
My Chiropractic Practice:
Quick and easy analysis and corrective adjustment
of the structural system for distortions: cranial bones,
TMJ, the entire spinal column, pelvis, pectoral girdle,
sternum, coccyx, ribs, and extremities
Immediate feedback to know if the distortion was
corrected
Very “low force”, and “low pressure”
Ability to adjust a patient standing, sitting, lying and
importantly, in their “position of injury”
bility to locate and release aniety or panic fight
flight distortion patterns and many other traumatic
or emotional patterns
Greatly enhances results for athletes as well as the
most difficult chiropractic cases
Gentle enough to use on everyone - infants to the
very elderly
I have seen in my patient population a great improvement
in overall ADL (Activities of Daily Living) while
integrating energy techniques into my practice.
Dr. Mehmet Oz, MD has said, “The next big frontier
in medicine is nergy edicine
Reasons Why
Hot Yoga Works
Have you hesitated to get yourself to a hot yoga
class? Well, now is a great time to try it out. There’s
no time like the present!
by lison cue, owerflow
ogas hief arketing fficer
and risten emp, owerflow
teacher and writer
Hot yoga just works Here are 10 PROVEN REASONS
why this practice offers so many mind and body benefits.
1. Stay strong. It strengthens and tones your muscles
throughout your entire body safely, without gym equipment,
using your own body weight.
2. Increase fleibility ou can go deeper into stretches in a
heated room The benefits of your bodys freedom of move
ment can last a lifetime when you have pliable muscles.
3. Ache less. It builds stronger muscles and bones. Add that
to increased fleibility, and your aches and pains will de
crease dramatically.
We know people are scared to try hot power yoga at
first fter all, our studios are heated to a uicy de
grees with percent humidity nd teachers guide
students through a vigorous series of linked poses
like down dog, up dog, warriors and more. But what
we often repeat in class is just so true: Try something
that scares you everyday. You will never regret stepping
outside of your comfort oneespecially in this
healthy, safe and super fun way.
People who try hot power yoga like the practice so
much that they come back for more several times a
week In fact, yoga currently has about million
American practitioners. While ‘hot’ yoga is newish,
yoga dates back thousands of years. And in yoga’s
motherland of India, most people don’t have a choice
but to practice in their region’s very warm climate.
So let us promise you this: Once you step into a hot
yoga room, your fears will begin to melt away. Studios
are really warm (as in super friendly) places. While it’s
true that hot power yoga classes are physically and
mentally challenging, our community of teachers are
highly trained to guide students of all levelsfrom
complete beginners to the most advancedthrough
their first or ,th class nd the students are awe
some, too Its a place where youll find a lot of smiles
and support both on an off your mat.
Usually, the number one reason people are drawn to
owerflow ogas classes are for the total body work
outs they get. They love to sweat. They feel like they
cleanse their bodies from the inside outand they
do. But others get more into the spiritual and meditative
aspects of this practice. The truth is, whether you
come to tone your butt or to get a calmer mind, both
will start to happen pretty quickly.
4. Lose weight. It promotes weight loss and staying in shape.
tudents burn to calories per hot yoga class nec
dotally, students body monitors have reported up to ,
calories burned in minutes
5. Add cardio. Your heart rate during hot yoga is similar to
when you run a mile.
6. Lower blood pressure. For people with mild to moderate
hypertension, yoga lowered blood pressure levels with great
success. Yogis had bigger drops than people who tried a
walking/nutrition/weight-counseling program.
7. Balance better. It prevents falls by improving your balance
tremendously.
8. Be happier. It clears the mind and improves mental focus
at all times, not just during your yoga class. Teachers emphasie
the yogic idea of focusing on the present momentand
mindfulness has doens of proven psychological benefits
9. Stress less. It helps you react to stressful situations with
more calm and claritythats what you practice when you stay
in a challenging pose or sequence in a hot room.
10. et busy Researchers at arvard found that yoga boosts
sexual arousal, desire, orgasm and general satisfaction for
women.
So what have you got to lose? Some sweat? Yes! Some
weight? or sure ven better, hot power yoga helps you
leave behind negative thoughts and old behavioral patterns
that hold you back. Have any mental or physical baggage
you’ve been carrying around? You can leave them
on your mat, too. You may come to hot power yoga for the
awesome physical practice. That’s great. But if we do our
job right, you’ll return for the positive changes that start to
happen in all parts of your life.
Lagging Economy and Social Distrust:
A BOON FOR NATURAL LIVING
Natural Living Experts to Gather at Annual Holistic Moms Conference
rom the early s and s until contemporary times, the
natural living movement has been growing steadily, evidenced
by the expansion of the natural products industry as well as
through increasing attention to holistic/alternative healthcare
and wellness services. But “holistic living has truly ‘exploded’,
particularly among parents, over the past years, according
to Holistic Moms Network Founder Dr. Nancy Peplinsky.
Two socio-economic factors appear to be inspiring the shift:
a persistent, lagging economy and a climate of distrust, according
to r eplinsky elfsufficiency and sustainability are
often motivated by financial hardship, whether that manifests
for individuals in growing their own food or reusing resources
household budgets is a culture of distrust whereby consumers
GMO food labeling movement.
and holistic community, but
the exponential increase in
the past few years speaks to a
larger cultural and economic
trend,” she argues. According
to Dr. Peplinsky, the slow
economy combined with distrust
of commercial agricultural
have been fueling the local food
movement, including home gardens
and homesteading. The distrust, however,
flows well beyond our food supply and
into the prevalence of toxins in our environment, our
household products, cleaners, and lawn care, among others.
Parents are driven to spearhead many facets of the natural living
movement on behalf of their children with concerns for
their well-being and the sustainability of their future.
With an eye on these trends, the Holistic Moms Network’s annual
Natural Living Conference, to be held on Saturday, October
, at ontclair tate niversity in ontclair, ew
Jersey, will explore some of the top concerns of the natural
living community, including chemical exposure in our environment
and our households, contemporary homesteading,
and do-it-yourself healing tinctures and infusions, among others
The event will also feature a eynote address by r aura
Markham of Ahaparening.com on positive parenting, workshops
on yoga and living with food allergies, and a holistic
exhibit hall with vendors from the holistic wellness and natural
foods industries.
The annual event unites the general public and Holistic Moms
Network members and attendees from across the country
who share an interest in holistic living and parenting. Community-building
and support are at the heart of the Holistic Moms
Network’s mission. “Connecting parents to each other, as well
as to experts who can educate them and companies they can
trust, all helps them to make positive lifestyle changes and expand
the natural living community,” said Peplinsky. The event
epects to draw more than attendees, and registration for
both exhibitors and attendees is now available online at annualconference.holisticmoms.org.
“It’s a bit of a paradox that natural living is both the channel
and the solution for these broad issues, but living a healthy,
selfsufficient lifestyle connected through community is eact
ly how we are going to get ourselves back on track,
both financially and in terms of rebuilding
trust,” Peplinsky explains. “At least, that
has always been at the core of what we
do at Holistic Moms.”
CAN’T SLEEP?
Treating insomnia the natural way
by Aleksandra Mihajlovic,
Licensed Acupuncturist &
Board Certified Herbalist
www.SashaAcupuncture.com
From the vantage point of Chinese Medicine, sleep is one of
the cornerstones of good health. As important as the food
we eat and the air we breathe, sleep can nourish us, repair
damage and return balance. When sleep is disturbed, when
inadequate in length or quality, the body will compensate as
long as it can, but then it will slowly deteriorate into disease.
Chinese Medicine views sleep disturbances as either a blockage
in the normal flow of energy i in the meridians or as
a lack of substances and organ imbalances. The practitioner
of Chinese Medicine will address the underlying cause with
acupuncture and/or a Chinese herbal formula, neither of
which have side effects or are habit-forming
During a typical consultation with a
Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner
the following questions will be asked:
1. How many hours per night do you sleep?
2. What is your bedtime?
3. Do you have problems falling asleep?
4. Do you have trouble staying asleep?
5. Do you wake up during the night? Is there a specific
time that you always seem to wake up?
6. Do you fall back to sleep easily or have troubles
and stay up?
7. Do you feel rested when you wake up?
The answers to these questions, together with the
rest of your health history, pulse and tongue diagnosis
will help formulate a diagnosis. Although insomnia
in Western Biomedicine is a catchall term; in Traditional
Chinese Medicine it is a much differentiated
diagnosis and treatment can be varied depending
on the root cause.
It is vital for our health that we leave adequate time for
sleep and do not steal time from it for other activities. A
few tips for good sleep hygiene can make a tremendous
impact on the quality of sleep we experience every night.
Observe natural rhythms and try to go to sleep and
wake up at the same time
hrs before sleep time discontinue use of any
electronic devices (TV, phone, tablet, computer) – the
intense light from electronic devices disrupts the
production of melatonin, a hormone responsible for
the sleep-wake cycle in the body
Sleep in a darkened room with no night lights (again,
in order not to disrupt melatonin production)
onsider the effect of electromagnetic fields
on the quality of sleep
Ideally do not eat hrs before sleep time
imit the use of alcohol while glass of wine might
rela you, a few more may bring on fitful sleep with a
loss of R sleep
Limit caffeine intake (this includes black & green tea)
or completely avoid it after pm if your sleep time is
around pm or hrs later
Your acupuncturist can teach you simple acupressure
techniques and points on the body where you can apply
pressure yourself. Performing acupressure on these
points before sleep or whenever you are under stress
can bring calmness and relaxation.
There Must
Be Angels
By Judy Toma
Reknowned Angel Therapist and Medium
Doris, a middle aged Mom of 3, wanted to know about her
children, her future and wanted to get in touch with her husband
who had passed.
Immediately her husband spoke up ….I saw him as a shorter
man, very funny, kind, generous and someone who absolutely
loved her to death. He said, “I may not always be available,
I will be moving to my next life. I love you, you will always be
in my heart and we will meet in the after-life but it is time you
let me go and move on.”
will see you are different.” Doris said, “Oh my goodness, I
just met him, we dated twice, he is exactly as you described.
I really like him.
Doris asked, what about my son, does my husband miss him?
I asked, “Is he 13?” “Yes”, she said. Your husband is saying,”I
love all my children and him so much, we were inseparable
but I had to leave so he could be more assertive, he was dependent
on me . She said, “that’s true”. He said, “He will be a
great man, do not worry.”
She said, I feel him and talk to him daily, but lately I don’t feel
him.” I said, “ the Angels are telling me,” Its time you move
on and live your life and find the new you and a new way of
being. “It has been, what 5 years since his death?” She said
“Yes, just going on 6, how do
you know that?” People ask
me every day, as did Doris
, how do you know that ? I
know because of the Angels.
When I connect with the person
who is inquiring, I immediately
connect to their Angels. Angels see our life from
beginning through to all our incarnations and want only the
best for us. They will stand by you, guiding and protecting
you, and if you want the most fulfilling and loving life, being
open and listening for their guidance is the way. Just be silent
and listen or you may see or feel or know their presence
and the path will then become clear.
Doris asked, “do you see me meeting anyone soon or marrying?”
I said, “they are telling me 2, within 2 years there will
be a committed relationship that will lead to marriage. I see
him, tall, handsome, bald, impeccable dresser, neat, rather
meticulous, wearing a beautiful suit. He will be crazy about
you but be careful, he has many women vying for his attention,
so play it cool. He is use to women doing anything for
him “, the Angels are saying, “do not always be available, he
The Angels are telling me,”
Its time you move on and
live your life and find the new you
and a new way of being.
The Angels said, “he is very sensitive, talented , he is artistic ,
I feel he would be amazing in art, possibly an architect.” She
said, he loves art. I said, “Help him to pursue it.”
The Angels were telling me
that her other children were
doing great but they both
need to stay focused. So
many kids today are dealing
with parents who are not
available or abusive and they
have much difficulty feeling
free to try new things, or to even imagine a productive life
filled with love, the lessons are most difficult. But when you
loose a parent who was really there for you, giving you unconditional
love, supportive, there is a hole in their heart that
they want to fill. They need to acclimate themselves to a new
way of being and now love themselves, sometimes kids feel
lost. But with the help of the Angels and the other parent, the
children can live very happy and productive lives.
Doris felt relieved and said, “this was amazing, I need to call
you in a year when I am more involved with this man I just
met. Thank you so much for your insight and the Angels, I
feel so much better knowing my husband is safe and I can
move on.”
