The Weekly Newsletter of the Cathedral of St. Philip, Serving Atlanta and the World
The Reverend Wallace Marsh Accepts
Call to the Cathedral
October 30, 2011
I am thrilled to announce this week that the Reverend C. Wallace Marsh IV has accepted a call to
be Canon for Congregational Life at the Cathedral of St. Philip!
Many of us have known Wallace for several years, since the days when he was a student at The
University of the South (he graduated in 2001). After graduation from Sewanee, he remained there
as Lay Chaplain through May of 2004. Students there spoke highly of his articulate faith and his
personable manner. In fact, I, too, began to notice Wallace around Episcopal Church circles; he
would be a good person to watch!
Wallace Marsh attended seminary at Yale Divinity School, and its Anglican component, Berkeley
Divinity School, where he graduated in 2007. His first ordained ministry was as Associate Rector at
St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, in Albany, Georgia. In 2009, Wallace Marsh became Associate Rector
at neighboring St. James’ Church, Marietta. When St. James’ rector retired, and then their interim
rector accepted another call, Wallace actually served St. James’ twice as Priest-in-Charge.
‘The greatest
among you will
be your servant.
All who exalt
themselves will
be humbled, and
all who humble
themselves will be
exalted.’
From this week’s lectionary
Matthew 23:1-12
Our canon staff, and our search advisory committee, are impressed with the range and the depth
of Wallace Marsh’s ministry. He knows how to pastor, teach, preach, and administer; and all these
are exactly the skills the Cathedral needs in a canon. Like all canons here, Wallace will participate
fully in the presiding, preaching, and pastoring schedules of priestly life. In particular, Wallace
will be “Canon For Congregational Life,” helping to develop small group ministries, young family
ministries, and parish life programs. He hopes especially to design and implement programs that
meet the needs of adults between the ages of 20 and 40 (focusing on both young married couples
without children and young singles).
Wallace married Margaret Ann only last year, and we are pleased they will move to the Cathedral
residence (the deanery) after The Antiques Show concludes (March of 2012). Wallace Marsh hopes
to begin his ministry with us November 28, 2011.
Again, I am thrilled by this new development! Our Cathedral budget has returned to a level where
we can make this hire, and our canon staff is excited to have a priest of Wallace’s caliber on board
here. Welcome, Wallace and Margaret Ann!

Old Fashioned Sunday School—
Livin’ the Dream: The Life of
the Baptized (Room 382)
How do we continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship,
in the breaking of the bread, and in the prayers? Canon George
Maxwell, Canon Beth Knowlton and Mack Leath lead this class.
On October 30 we will discuss What is evil?
Luke/Acts Bible Study (Room 380)
We will be reading the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of Apostles
as a whole as Luke probably wanted Theophilus to read them.
The Gospel of Luke is the biography of Jesus, and the Acts of the
Apostles is the history of the early church. We will focus on several
themes that run through both books: prayer, salvation history, table
fellowship, wealth and poverty, women, and discipleship. These
two books give us a summary of the drama of salvation. For more
information please contact Gordon Mathis at 404-842-1595 or Jim
Bingham at 404-373-3273 or binghamjim@bellsouth.net.
Beginning Biblical Greek (ROOM 370)
The New Testament Greek class is offered on a drop-in basis at no
cost. No previous language expertise is required; every class begins
with the Greek alphabet and pronunciation practice. Please contact
the Rev. Thee Smith at relths@emory.edu or 404-727-0636.
Understanding Faith through Poetry,
Writing, and Daily Life (Room 368)
The Rev. Charles M. Roper will present classes based on his
memoirs “The World, the Flesh and God” on Sundays in October.
On October 30 the class will talk about God. Class members will
be asked to think in poetic terms.
Continuing Biblical Greek Class
(Room 370)
Anyone who would like to learn Greek is welcome to subscribe to the
Cathedral’s Sunday afternoon class taught by the Rev. Thee Smith
and Rick Tyler. Translate from the original language of the scriptures.
Enjoy discussions of the Greek of the New Testament texts, and
learn how knowledge of the language may add nuance and depth
of understanding to one’s reading of the New Testament. Class will
meet on Sundays from 1-2:30 p.m. For more information contact
the Rev. Thee Smith at thee.smith@emory.edu, 404-727-0636.
Visit the Cathedral Farmers Market
this Saturday!
The Cathedral Farmers Market was founded in 2007
as a joint project between Gina and Linton Hopkins
(of Restaurant Eugene, H&F Bread Co., H&F Bottle
Shop, and Holeman & Finch Public House) and
the Cathedral of St. Philip. The farmers with whom
the Hopkins’ work were in need of a centrally located
weekly market and the Cathedral, located near the center
of Buckhead, had space in its large parking lot and the desire to bring the
community together around local food.
The Market has grown from 12 vendors in its first year to 70 vendors in 2011,
making it the largest producer-only market in metro Atlanta. Producer-only
means that everything at the Market has been grown, raised, or made by the
seller, ensuring fair prices for both the vendors and the consumers. The Market
accepts Georgia EBT/ SNAP benefits (food stamps) and doubles the value
through our partnership with Wholesome Wave Georgia to help make healthy
food more accessible to all. Those who want to use SNAP benefits should visit
the information tent at the Market to process their card.
Please visit the Market every Saturday!
September to December in the Cathedral parking lot
from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, rain or shine.
Join the Cathedr al Choir for a r are liturgical offering
of the Victoria REQUIEM Sunday, November 6 at 4 p.m.
November 1 in the liturgical calendar is the Feast of All Saints. On that day the Church
remembers all who have died in the faith of Christ. In our remembrance we express the
communion of the living and the dead in the body of Christ by a commemoration of those
who having professed faith in the living Christ in days past entered into the nearer presence
of their Lord.
This year we will celebrate a unique Requiem Eucharist on All Saints’ Sunday, November
6 at 4 p.m. Please join us for this very special worship service during which we will remember
by name those members and friends of the Cathedral parish who have died in the faith of
Christ in the past year. The ancient and image-rich Christian texts of the Requiem will be
sung by the full Cathedral Choir using the music of Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548–1611), the
great Spanish priest-musician whose large corpus of transcendently beautiful sacred music has
secured him a place as one of the greatest composers in the whole span of Christianity. His
setting of the Requiem (Officium Defunctorum, 1605) will be sung in its intended but rarely
heard context of worship, a fully choral service of Holy Communion.
We encourage you to join us to remember and give thanks for the lives of those who have
entered into rest.
The Work of Our Hands is a non-profit organization founded in
2000 by Bishop Frank K. Allan, retired Bishop of the Episcopal
Diocese of Atlanta. A passionate believer in the spiritual benefits
of rediscovering one’s imagination and creative gifts, Bishop
Allan sought to build an organization to support art-oriented
programs throughout metro Atlanta that served and encouraged
people from all walks of life. Proceeds from the show benefit the
art programs at Emmaus House which serves underprivileged
individuals and families in the Peoplestown community, Holy
Comforter Friendship Center, which serves people with mental
and physical disabilities in metro Atlanta, and Church of
the Common Ground, a “church without walls” serving the
homeless in downtown Atlanta.
“The Work of Our Hands Artists’ Market is a major source
of funding for these programs as well as a showcase for the
creative spirit which crosses all boundaries and walks of life,”
states Bishop Allan.
Nets for Life campaign launches in November
The Cathedral parish family is invited to support the Diocese of Atlanta Episcopal Relief
& Development Inspiration Fund/Nets for Life campaign. The campaign will begin at
the Annual Council, November 4-5, 2011 and end at the Annual Council in 2012.
The goals of this campaign are twofold:
• For each Episcopalian in our diocese to learn about malaria and its effect
on the population in 17 African countries. Please visit inspirationfund.org/
about-malaria for information about malaria.
• For each Episcopalian in our diocese to buy one $12 mosquito net at er-d.
org/inspiration-fund. Nets help prevent malaria. Malaria causes nearly
one million deaths per year, and the majority of these deaths are children
younger than five years old and pregnant women. One child dies each
minute from malaria.
Learn more about the Nets for Life/Inspiration Fund at inspirationfund.org/inspirationfund.
Our diocesan goal is to purchase 35,000 nets. Contact Cathedral member Jean
Outreach Volunteers
Reaching beyond the Cathedrals walls and also welcoming others into our community the outreach efforts of the Cathedral parish
are widespread. They include not only our treasure but countless service hours of hands on volunteering and board service.
From serving food at the Peachtree-Pine Shelter and annually building a Habitat for Humanity home to food drives and funds
which provide school uniforms to children in Tanzania, our efforts reflect the diverse interests and caring of the Parish for the
wider world. Most of these efforts begin in small groups within the Cathedral but also include funds allocated from the
operating budget for grants to not- for- profit agencies and organizations around the city.
Watch for outreach opportunities and news in the Cathedral Times and on the Cathedral website. For questions or more
information regarding specific activities please contact Kimberly McOmber at 404-467-9425 or kmcomber@bellsouth.net
