FRONT OF HOUSE>> ARCHITECTURAL ACCENTS Well-known local architect Peter Cardew is bringing the sleek, studied contemporary lines of his buildings to a new furniture collection at 18 Karat Home Store (3039 Granville Street). Pieces include almost monastically minimalist benches, stools, and tables made from slatted oak (see left); rectangular marble coffee and side tables that come in white, black, and two shades of grey (below); and striking, multitextured sofas that blend leather and felted wool, rectangles and cylindrical cushions. Prices range from about $480 for a wood stool to about $2,300 for a sofa. KID-FRIENDLY White Rock–based Fu-Shun Baby already has some celebrity fans: Gwyneth Paltrow was spotted with one of the line’s chic diaper bags. Now the company’s designer, Carli Morrison, is venturing into nursery décor. Funky deco zoo animals emblazon a set of four, eight-by-eight-inch natural-canvas frames ($89). The wall art comes in two mod printed patterns. There’s also a three-canvas version bearing A, B, and C ($89). Look for local goods, too, including Gailan Ngan’s ceramics. GLOBAL GRAPES Nobody can say that readers of 1001 Wines You Must Taste Before You Die (Universe, $39.95) aren’t ambitious. Those who find pleasure in not just drinking but chasing down the world’s finest vino now have a guide. With contributions by global wine scribes edited by U.K. wine writer Neil Beckett, the tome reviews a globe’s worth of bottles. Only two Canadian tipples make the cut—both B.C. icewines, from Inniskillin and Mission Hill. Not a drinker? Chomp on 1001 Foods You Must Taste Before You Die (Universe, $39.95) instead.
