Dear Auction 2010 Participants:
…He would cry out on life, that what it wants
Is not its own love back in copy speech,
But counter–love, original response.
—from The Most of It by Robert Frost
As you know, the arts lie at the heart of the Poly experience. Dance, theater,
music, painting, drawing, and ceramics—all foster the mind, body, and
character development that Poly seeks for each of our students.
Poly’s outstanding arts faculty (many practicing professionals in their fields)
encourage our students’ imaginations and hone their aesthetic sense while
providing them hands-on knowledge of their crafts.
Indeed, I believe our arts curriculum helps students along the path to “the
counter-love” and “original response” Frost famously wrote of. Making “the
most of it”—and intellectual and moral leadership—will be vital to your
children whether they become poets, doctors, or entrepreneurs.
Many of our recent arts events have also highlighted the centrality of the arts
at our school. Our first-ever “Week of the Arts” in March—which brought
together faculty, alumni, parents, and students on both campuses—was a
wonderful communal affirmation of the importance of visual art.
This past February’s fabulous Upper School production of Oklahoma!, our
spectacular Spring Dance Concert, and the following week’s performances
by our Concert Choir at Carnegie Hall and 9th grade dancers at Lincoln
Center (part of the New York City Ballet workshop program), also cast a
spotlight on student achievement in the arts at Poly.
So, please enjoy Arts Auction 2010! Find an artwork that speaks to you, that
will provoke your own original response and become part of your daily life.
But remember, too, that your Arts Auction 2010 purchases will directly
enhance arts teaching and learning here at our school and enrich your
children’s lives, now and for years to come.
