INFORMATION AND ORIENTATION
Eau Gallie Band 2013 -14
W E L C O M E !
It’s that time of year again when plans are being made
for the next school year and you must decide where
you intend to devote your time, efforts and energies.
We highly encourage you to become a part of our
family that is the Eau Gallie Band Program. Musical
talent is a gift. The fact that you are part of the
tradition of excellence in your band means that you
possess this gift for music, and your gift must be
nurtured and developed to its fullest potential.
All of the students in the Eau Gallie Band are
ready to welcome you into our program. Ask any
student in our band and they will tell you about the
feeling of “family” that exists between the members
of our group, the intellectual and emotional
stimulation that music provides, and the important
lessons they have learned about leadership,
teamwork, and friendship. Because of our feeling of
“family,” band at Eau Gallie is definitely not just
another class at school.
Take advantage of your opportunity to be in the
Eau Gallie Band Program—this is what you have
worked towards since the first day you played your
instrument. The sense of teamwork, commitment,
and feelings of personal accomplishment will take on
a whole new meaning when you are in the Eau Gallie
Band. THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR
MAKING MUSIC!!
C L A S S E S , AUDITIONS , A N D S C H E D U L I N G
Auditions for students at Johnson Middle School will be held April 29-30 for placement in the band classes at
Eau Gallie (auditions at other schools will be scheduled as needed). *Everybody makes the band, so the audition
simply places you into the band class best suited for your needs. There will be four main classes of band students
in 2013-14: Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Concert Band and Instrumental Techniques. Symphonic Band is
the top performing group at our school and consists of students who have shown an ability to play 12 scales twooctaves,
from memory and sight-read at a very high level of achievement. The Wind Ensemble is a group of
students who can play all 12 scales at least one octave (memorization required)
and show good proficiency with sight-reading. The audition for Concert Band
will consist of 12 scales (memorization NOT required) and sight-reading. The
Instrumental Techniques class will consist of students who need more training
before they are grouped with a performing ensemble. Woodwind and brass
students in the techniques class will not perform with the marching band.
Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, and Concert Band students (and
Instrumental Techniques Percussion students) will combine to make the
marching band during the fall semester.
*students in good standing in your Middle School Band Program
Marching Band at Eau Gallie is a
requirement of every band student in the top
three bands. The marching band activity is
one of the most fun parts of band at the high
school—trips, ball games, and school spirit
are all part of what we do in the
Marching Commodores.

AU D I T I O N S : W H AT T O P R E PA R E
Auditions will be held by Mr. Singletary and Ms. Curran at
Johnson and Eau Gallie in the month of April. We will assign
you an audition day and time, and each audition will last about
five minutes. It is important that you play well for the audition,
but don’t stress out! Mr. and Mrs. Singletary and Ms. Curran
know that all of you play well, so you should not put undue
pressure on yourself. The audition consists of scales, rhythmic
counting, and sight-reading.
Those students who wish to audition for Symphonic Band
should be prepared to play the 12 major scales, memorized, as
many octaves as possible. Symphonic Band usually consists of
upperclassmen who have more experience with band; there is
also a limited instrumentation. However, 9th and 10th graders
may make this ensemble if they meet the musical standard and
are within the instrumentation needs. Sight-reading is a part of
the Symphonic Band audition as well, and it is important to
practice sight-reading as a part of your preparation for the
audition. Symphonic Band will be limited to about 60 students.
The students placed in Wind Ensemble will be able to play all
12 major scales at least one octave, from memory. Scales are a
very important part of the audition, along with being able to play
with a good tone quality and an ability to count rhythmically
using the counting system from your band class.
Students who audition for Concert Band should play as many
scales as possible, with or without memorization. Concert
Band will be a large ensemble, with no limits on size. Most
students will be enrolled in Concert Band as a
Freshman.
J A Z Z B A N D S
When freshman students register for band classes at Eau
Gallie, they register for “Band” as a default. Just check
“BAND” on the schedule
and Mr. Singletary will put
you in the band class for
which you meet the
requirements.
If you are interested in jazz band, add
it to the list and check it. You will discuss this with the
counselors from EGHS when you meet with them at Johnson.
Students who want to audition for Eau Gallie Jazz Bands should
do so, and then Mr. Singletary will put you in the appropriate
jazz band class and zero hour career class based on the audition.
Percussionists will have a totally different audition process than
the brass and woodwinds. Percussion rehearsal will begin on
Tuesday, April 2nd at 6:00 PM at the Eau Gallie Bandroom.
Multiple Tuesday practice sessions are required in April and May
for all percussionists who are auditioning for the Eau Gallie
Band next year. More information will be provided at the first
rehearsal.
Each percussionist will be auditioned on an individual basis by a
panel of judges. At the audition, they will play the marching
instruments of their choice along with mallet scales/sightreading,
timpani tuning, and more. A detailed, written
explanation of the percussion auditions will be distributed by our
percussion teacher, Mr. Blum, in the upcoming weeks.
The Jazz Band auditions will be held at Eau Gallie on May 1st. Jazz Band One will consist of the most talented players as heard in the
audition. THE AUDITION RESULTS, NOT YOUR EXPERIENCE IN JAZZ BAND, DETERMINES THE PERSONNEL FOR
EACH GROUP. Placement in the top jazz band will be VERY competitive every year. Please understand that we can only take 5-6
saxes, 4-5 trombones, and 5 trumpets total.
JAZZ BAND TWO is a class that will be available again next year. Spots for the second jazz band will also be determined at the
audition. The basic instrumentation of 5 saxes, 4 trombones, 4 trumpets and rhythm section will be a determining factor in the
selection process. Students must be enrolled in Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, or Concert Band at Eau Gallie simultaneously with
their Jazz Band enrollment to be allowed to participate in Jazz Band. In other words, people who are in jazz band take band twice a
day. Taking band twice a day is very possible at Eau Gallie! It has worked for many years and we will show you how to fit jazz band
in to your class schedule.
SEE THE BAND WEB SITE FOR MORE INFORMATION ON JAZZ AUDITIONS!
Jazz Band is listed on the 9th grade registration sheet. Students who want to audition for Eau Gallie Jazz Bands should add Jazz Band
on their registration sheet. Mr. Singletary will put you in the appropriate jazz band class (and add you to the zero-hour career class)
based on the audition results.
Audition requirements for all jazz bands are the following:
⇒ A short “jazzy” solo that we will provide for you.
⇒ Students auditioning for Jazz Band I must play an improvised solo of three choruses of B flat blues (see Mr. or Mrs. Singletary or
the web site for a recording of the accompaniment track). If you would only like to be considered for Jazz Band Two, then
improvisation is not required.
⇒ Saxophone students auditioning for Jazz Band I must also play Bb, Eb, and Ab concert scales on either flute or clarinet in addition
to the scales on saxophone. Check the band web site for more info on auditions!

B A N D C A M P I S R E Q U I R E D !
Camp begins three weeks before school starts.
Being a member of the Eau Gallie Marching Commodores
will be one of the greatest experiences of your life.
Membership in the marching band is a requirement of all
band students, but more than that, it’s FUN! Band camp
is the name of our summer practice session that prepares
our band to be the best it can be. Many of you
have little experience with marching band, and
learning the steps and the music is a fun and
rewarding experience.
When we plan the marching show, we assign
everyone a place on the field. If you’re not at
band camp, you will miss out on your placement
and might spend most of the marching season on
the sidelines as an alternate for the marching
band.
Alternates for the show attend all marching band
rehearsals, performances, and functions, and are
considered to be full members of the marching
band. Alternates will be assigned a permanent
spot in the show when one becomes available
during the season.
Alternates make it possible for students to take
part in multiple school activities while still participating
in band. Freshmen will be selected as alternates during
the early part of the season, as they are the least
experienced marching members. However, permanent
spots will open quickly and EVERYBODY GETS A
TURN!!
It will be almost impossible to catch up learning
the marching and maneuvering required for
marching band if you are not at camp. You and
your parents should plan vacations around band
camp so you can have a spot in the show! New
members in the band should attend Rookie
Camp on the first two days of 10 a.m. to 12 noon.
Most afternoon rehearsals will be held inside and
evening rehearsals will be held outside, although
there will be some times when we practice in the
afternoon sun.
We are planning a great show for you—make sure
you are at camp so you can be a part of our
awesome marching band!
W I L L I B E A B L E T O D O O T H E R T H I N G S , T O O ?
Of course! Students in the band
participate in virtually every other school activity as well:
track, crew, newspaper, baseball, golf, Latin Team,
Debate Team, drama, orchestra, chorus, AFROTC, you
name it! Football and band are the only two activities that
conflict with each other enough to make it nearly
impossible to participate in both. The volleyball
and band schedules are also very similar, making
simultaneous participation nearly impossible.
Remember, students should not plan to participate in
activities that are regularly scheduled against marching
band practice (Tuesday and Thursday nights) or Friday
night performances.
Many students in band are enrolled in AP courses, dual
enrollment at BCC, Cambridge classes, and other
challenging academic opportunities.
The teachers at Eau Gallie work together to make sure
you are able to get everything you want out of your high
school career.
In band, the people that practice the most get to
perform the most. Therefore, if you are involved in
school activities for which you will miss band practice,
you may be assigned a “shared” or “alternate” position.
BAND STUDENTS SHOULD NOT SCHEDULE
ACTIVITIES THAT REGULARLY CONFLICT WITH
BAND REHEARSAL.

BA N D P R AC T I C E
Marching Band requires after
school rehearsals in order to
coordinate all of the aspects of the
marching shows. The only time we
put the entire band on the field is at
band practice. Regular band
rehearsals will be from 6:00—8:30
PM on Tuesday and Thursday
evenings. The drumline and dance
team will practice on Wednesday
evenings from 6:00-8:30 as well.
(On home JV football games, the
band will practice on Wednesday
evening rather than Thursday
evening. )
We practice less than many other
marching bands in our area, and
yet we continue to have the
strongest marching program
around!
The Eau Gallie Band Program
has a history of excellence with
both marching and concert
bands. The philosophy of our
program emphasizes concert
literature as being most important,
and we will be working on the best
in band literature during class each
day. We will practice marching
band music during class
occasionally, but the majority of
our year will focus on the repertoire
for Fall, Winter, and Spring
Concerts and Concert Band
Festival.
Regular Marching Band Rehearsals in August, September, and October are held on
• Tuesdays 6—8:30 PM
• Wednesdays 6—8:30 PM (percussion only) Wednesdays will serve as rehearsal days for
EVERYONE when JV football home games are played on Thursdays.
• Thursdays 6—8:30 PM
PARENTS—WE NEED YOUR HELP!!
As you can see, we have an active
organization dedicated to making
your student’s experience with
music worthwhile. It is important
that you remain involved with the
musical aspect of your child’s
education. A great way to help is to
be an active part of our band
parents’ support group. By
volunteering your time, you will be
able to help our organization raise
money with fundraisers or in the
football concession
stand, or you could
be a
chaperone
for a football
game.
We know you’ll
find our parents to
be friendly and
focused on helping music education
affect your child in a positive way.
We can continue to have the best
program in Brevard County if you
will pitch in and help. Thanks for
your support!
We will have a meeting in the
Johnson Middle School Media
Center on Thursday, May 17 at
6:30 PM where you can sign up to
help. Check the calendar for
details!

year. Proceeds from these fundraisers go into the general operating fund of the band program and will
allow us to meet the many financial obligations that are part of sustaining our thriving music program. We
need everyone’s help because our students deserve the best musical experience we can give them!
The list of fees above must be applied to your student’s situation—not everyone pays every fee. For
example, a male student in Concert Band would not purchase a Symphonic Band dress!
*There are fundraising opportunities to help out with all of the fees with the exception of the drill fee,
marching band fee, and clothes ($173 total).

CHARMS
The Charms Music Office Assistant is our
system for keeping financial records for the Eau
Gallie High School Band. Fundraisers, trips,
and band fees are organized through Charms.
eaugallieband
You can access your account balance, update
your contact information, view your assigned
inventory, and check dates on the calendar any
time you want through the Charms system. After
you receive your access code from the director, you will assign yourself a password that only you know so
you can be assured that your information and financial transactions are secure. Your student ID number is
not the same as their Brevard County Schools ID. ID numbers will be distributed at the Johnson 9th
grade band parent meeting, currently scheduled for May 21 st . CHARMS can use PayPal for its
financial transactions. PayPal is an e- commerce business allowing payments and money transfers to be
made through the Internet. It serves as an electronic alternative to traditional paper methods such as
checks and money orders. We are excited to offer this new system as we bring the band program "up to
date" with technology!
You may pay fees the “old school” way if you wish, and we will enter your payments into Charms for you.
All checks must be deposited into the lock box in the EGHS Bandroom using our deposit envelope.
WHEN YOU ACTIVATE YOUR CHARMS ACCOUNT, YOU WILL ENTER YOUR ADDRESS,
TELEPHONE NUMBER, AND E-MAIL ADDRESS SO YOU CAN GET ALL THE LATEST
BAND ACTIVITY INFORMATION!
We will have a parent who will serve as a contact person for all financial matters regarding band. You
may e-mail this parent at eaugalliebandcharms@yahoo.com
http://eaugallieband.org
Band students will hardly ever
be given papers to bring
home. All information will be
posted on the Eau Gallie Band
web site. It is absolutely
essential that parents and
students check the web site OFTEN to get updates about rehearsals, performances,
fundraisers, and all the things we do as a group. If you do not have internet access at
your home, get a friend to check the site for you or stop by the school media center or
your local library to get the latest information. The directors have learned through the
years that most papers simply don’t make it home. Using the web site is easy and
informative!
There are group pages for percussion and color guard that will be updated with
important information separate from the regular web site. If your student is involved
in percussion or dance team, then you should visit their web site in addition to the
main band web site.
