Law School Celebrates Red Mass
This year’s Red Mass honored all our alumni who are currently serving in the

In September, St. Thomas
University School of Law’s St.
Thomas More Catholic Law
Society hosted a Red Mass in the
campus Chapel of St. Anthony.
More than 150 attorneys, judges,
students, and faculty attended the
Red Mass which seeks God’s
blessing on those who are a part
of the legal profession.
This year’s Red Mass paid
special tribute to the St. Thomas
University School of Law alumni
who serve their communities as
members of the judiciary: The

Torre ’97, The Honorable John
Bowman ’87, The Honorable
Margaret T. Courtney ’92, The
Honorable Pedro Dijols ’87, The
Honorable Mindy Glazer ’91, The
Honorable Don Hall ’90, The

and The Honorable Victoria Del
Pino ’99.
The luncheon following the
Mass featured remarks by Florida
Representative J.C. Planas ’98, who
spoke to the crowd about his own
faith. “The things you do as a law
practitioner will affect people’s
lives, and will having lasting
repercussions,” he told the crowd.
“When faced with tremendous
challenges, your faith can give you
the strength you need to do the
right thing.”

Prof. Benton Becker gave a lecture
at the Gerald R. Ford Museum on
“Slavery: A Legal Perspective.”
Prof. Karl Gruben and Associate
Law Library Director Sonia Luna-
Lamas have published chapters in
the book, LAW LIBRARIANSHIP
IN THE TWENTY FIRST
CENTURY.
Roza Pati, Executive Director of
the Graduate Program in
Intercultural Human Rights,
presented "International Legal
Standards of Fair Trial under
Universal and Regional Human
Rights Law and Their Application
by the International Criminal
Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia
(ICTY)" at a conference in Graz,
Austria. Pati's speech will also be
published in a book on the issue.
Prof. Elizabeth Pendo serves as
Chair of the Dade-Monroe and
Statewide Committees of Florida’s
Managed Care Ombudsman program.
Prof. Siegfried Wiessner was
named to the Executive Committee
of the American Society of
International Law. Additionally, he
spoke at the University of
Pittsburgh Law School as part of
their Faculty Speakers Program.
Prof. Mark Wolff participated as
Head of Delegation for Pax
Romana in the fourth special
session of the United Nations
Human Rights Council on the
human rights conditions in Darfur.
