February is<br />
intensity month<br />
With Valentine’s <strong>Day</strong> falling on 14 February <strong>and</strong> this<br />
month being the month of love, it is only fitting that<br />
the word of the month for our ‘Building for Greatness’<br />
theme is intensity. Intensity relates to having<br />
exceptionally great energy, power, concentration,<br />
strength or having a high degree of emotional<br />
excitement regarding an activity, thought or feeling.<br />
When it comes to your business, start by having a<br />
strategy of intensifying plans to build intensity in<br />
every area of your business that needs development.<br />
The hallmark of successful entrepreneurs, top<br />
executives <strong>and</strong> businesses is intensity <strong>and</strong> the drive<br />
for continuous improvement. It allows you to perform<br />
all tasks with more passion, optimising your marketing<br />
strategy, creating endurance <strong>and</strong> achieving business<br />
fitness to generate more income, <strong>and</strong> develop your<br />

A recent study by the Diabetes Discovery Platform <strong>and</strong> the Infruitec-<br />
Nietvoorbij Institute has found promising capabilities of the Rooibos os<br />
plant to lower blood sugar levels which is good news for all Diabetics.<br />
team of South African researchers released results<br />
in October 2012 of a Diabetes study showing<br />
the beneficial effect of Rooibos on blood sugar<br />
levels. The study found that an Aspalathinenriched<br />
extract of Green Rooibos is able to<br />
lower raised glucose levels in the blood.<br />
According to the South African Rooibos Council, when Aspalathin<br />
(Aspalathus Linearis), an antioxidant found only in the Rooibos<br />
plant is combined with Rutin, another key ingredient in Rooibos<br />
Tea, the two ingredients together, succeed in lowering the blood<br />
glucose level monitored over a six hour period. This could have the<br />
same effect as drugs that are currently available on the market to<br />
counter Diabetes.<br />
The study was conducted by the Diabetes Discovery Platform<br />
from South Africa’s Medical Research Council (MRC) <strong>and</strong> the South<br />
African Agricultural Research Council’s (ARC) Infruitec-Nietvoorbij<br />
Institute. It was carried out with extracts of Green Rooibos prepared<br />
by Prof Lizette Joubert of the ARC, analysed by the MRC <strong>and</strong> the<br />
results were published in the online version of the Phytomedicine<br />
Journal.<br />
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Diabetes<br />
will affect 439 million people around the world by 2030. Currently<br />
6.5 million South Africans have Diabetes, although experts feel that<br />
number may be under-reported. The disease develops when the<br />
body does not produce enough insulin, a hormone that enables<br />
cells to absorb glucose from the blood <strong>and</strong> convert it into energy.<br />
Dr Johan Louw, of the MRC <strong>and</strong> team leader of the study,<br />
says their team of researchers are the first in the world to discover<br />
this effect with Rooibos extract <strong>and</strong> their work confirms the<br />
constituents present in Rooibos could prove beneficial in the<br />
fight against Diabetes.<br />
“Rooibos has many compounds with different effects at<br />
different concentrations. On its own Rutin has no effect<br />
while Aspalathin has a slight effect, but when<br />
they are combined the results are remarkable.<br />
We believe Rooibos can provide a basis to<br />
develop a st<strong>and</strong>ardised anti-Diabetic product. In<br />
a country like South Africa. Where a large section of<br />
the population relies on herbal medicines, such a<br />
product could be of huge value,” he says.<br />
“Our focus as scientists is the promotion of<br />
healthy lifestyles <strong>and</strong> a healthier population, not<br />
just in South Africa but all over the world, so don’t<br />
hesitate to drink that cup of Rooibos as part of a<br />
good diet,” he says.<br />
Prof Joubert of ARC says their Rooibos<br />
research to date, focused mostly on the<br />
antioxidant activity of Rooibos, but this<br />
evidence of its ability to lower blood glucose<br />
levels opens up new <strong>and</strong> exciting possibilities for<br />
this unique South African herb.<br />
“We now need to dig deeper<br />
to determine the optimal<br />
combination <strong>and</strong> ratio of the<br />
active compounds such<br />
as Aspalathin <strong>and</strong> Rutin<br />
in controlling<br />
blood glucose<br />
levels, <strong>and</strong> also<br />
underst<strong>and</strong> the<br />
exact mechanisms<br />
involved,” she says.<br />

One of the biggest mistakes<br />
teenagers make when trying to<br />
make acne breakouts disappear,<br />
is to dry the skin out <strong>and</strong> remove<br />
all natural oils by using soaps,<br />
scrubs <strong>and</strong> masques; according to<br />
Cornè Wiid, one of <strong>Annique</strong>’s Top<br />
50 consultants from Kimberley.<br />
“Teenagers often feel<br />

as possible. “It is critical that the<br />
skin is not overstimulated, usually<br />
through over-exfoliating. Knowing<br />

Now that her three children are all grown<br />
up, Marida Pretorius, a leading consultant<br />
from Kyalami, is excited to focus even more<br />
time <strong>and</strong> energy on growing her successful<br />
<strong>Annique</strong> business.<br />
Marida Pretorius, a 46 year old top 50 consultant from Kyalami, followed in her<br />
mother’s footsteps building her <strong>Annique</strong> business while raising her children.<br />
She is now more excited than ever about investing more energy into her<br />
business since her children are grown up <strong>and</strong> able to support themselves.<br />
She has been selling<br />
<strong>Annique</strong> products part-time<br />
since the age of 19, during<br />
her university years <strong>and</strong> while<br />
teaching at two nursery schools<br />
for 11 years, until she decided to<br />
work full time on her business,<br />
when her youngest son began<br />
grade one. This consultant has<br />

A traditional start to <strong>Annique</strong><br />
When Marida was 14 years old<br />
her mother, Dalena Stulting,<br />
began selling <strong>Annique</strong> products<br />
after attending a demonstration<br />
party where Dr <strong>Annique</strong><br />
Theron was demonstrating the<br />
products.<br />
“Dr Theron invited my<br />
mother, who was a stay-at-home<br />
mom, to become a consultant<br />
<strong>and</strong> from that moment on my<br />
mom became passionate about<br />
Marida <strong>and</strong> her mother Dalena Stulting taking part in selling <strong>Annique</strong> products. When<br />
the festivities of the overseas trip to Greece in 1995. I was 19 years old, studying a<br />
B-Primary Education Degree at<br />
R<strong>and</strong> Afrikaans University, I began working as a consultant part time,” she says.<br />
After completing her degree, Marida went on to work for a nursery school in<br />
Newl<strong>and</strong>s for five years <strong>and</strong> after this began running a nursery school in Bryanston,<br />
while continuing to sell <strong>Annique</strong> products part time.<br />
“After studying <strong>Beauty</strong> Therapy at Madge Wallace International College of<br />
Skincare <strong>and</strong> Body Therapy in Parktown North, when my youngest son began grade<br />
one, I decided to work full time to grow my <strong>Annique</strong> business. My husb<strong>and</strong> built a<br />
salon onto his offices in Midr<strong>and</strong> where I currently run my business from, working<br />
mainly in the Kyalami, Fourways <strong>and</strong> S<strong>and</strong>ton areas,” she says.<br />

perks<br />
Marida says the benefit of being an <strong>Annique</strong> consultant is that she enjoys working<br />
flexible hours for a company that cares about their consultants <strong>and</strong> clients. She<br />
says it is wonderful to be able to pay her own salary <strong>and</strong> make a difference in<br />
other people’s lives.<br />
“<strong>Annique</strong> is a winning product so it’s a win-win situation. It is amazing to see<br />
the positive difference <strong>Annique</strong> makes in the lives of consultants <strong>and</strong> clients.<br />
Through <strong>Annique</strong> I have become more organised, can manage my own finances<br />
<strong>and</strong> have done a great deal of research on people’s social habits,” she says.<br />
Marida says through the Presentation Skills Course, which she attended<br />
in December 2011, she is also now more self-assured <strong>and</strong> able to talk more<br />
confidently in front of people. “In the beginning I found it difficult to speak<br />
English, but because 80% of my consultants are English, I had to learn to speak<br />
the language more confidently to grow my business,” she says.<br />

Marida married Meyer Pretorius, who is currently a partner in a computer<br />
software company, in 1998. For 15 years the Pretorius family lived on a<br />
smallholding in Kyalami <strong>and</strong> during 2012 moved to Pecanwood Estate near<br />
Hartebeespoort.<br />
“Together we have three sons <strong>and</strong> welcomed a daughter-in-law into the<br />
family in March 2012 when Helgard, our eldest son got married. Helgard, who<br />
is 24 years old, completed his final year as a Theology student at Stellenbosch<br />
University in 2012 <strong>and</strong> began working at the NG Moedergemeente, Stellenbosch<br />
this year,” she says.<br />
Erin, their daughter-in-law who is 23 years old, works as junior lecturer at<br />
Stellenboch <strong>and</strong> is busy with her Doctorate degree in Translation. Their second<br />
son, Hugo, who is 22 years old, is a student in Sport Science <strong>and</strong> Biokinetics<br />
at Stellenbosch University. Altus, their youngest son, is 20 years old <strong>and</strong> is the<br />
musician in the family, studying teaching at Potchefstroom University.<br />
MARIDA’S MARVELOUS TIPS<br />
FOR CONSULTANTS<br />
• Everyone is important in your team, but it may not be<br />
their season or they may have a problem as to why they<br />
can’t focus on their business. As Ernest says, 10% of<br />
your downline are stars <strong>and</strong> 60% have the ability to be<br />
successful but it may not be their time.<br />
• As a leader you need to know where your consultants<br />
are <strong>and</strong> be there for them contacting them regularly <strong>and</strong><br />
helping those who want to grow.<br />
• Build leaders in your first level of consultants from the<br />
outset, so that you can avoid having to do everything<br />
yourself <strong>and</strong> can create balance in your life.<br />
• Be there for your consultants <strong>and</strong> help build your leaders’<br />
downlines. They must know they can depend on you <strong>and</strong><br />
that you will help them.<br />
• Hold team meetings at least once a week <strong>and</strong> if you can’t<br />
attend your consultants meetings, follow up with them.<br />
• Invest a great deal into your consultants <strong>and</strong> emphasise<br />
the overseas trips as this becomes a point of great<br />
motivation for them.<br />

Two of the highlights of being part of <strong>Annique</strong> for Marida,<br />
have been seeing her business grow over the years <strong>and</strong><br />
going on the overseas trips. She says the first overseas trip<br />
she went on was the trip to Greece in 1995 where she <strong>and</strong> her<br />
mom qualified to go.<br />
“The second overseas trip I went on was the trip to Dubai<br />
in 1996 <strong>and</strong> again I qualified together with my mom <strong>and</strong> took<br />
my younger sister Helena with. I have also been on the trips<br />
to Europe in 1998 <strong>and</strong> Australia in 2002 <strong>and</strong> am now aiming<br />
for Vietnam,” says Marida.<br />
She says her mother has always been a role model for<br />
her giving her guidance through example. “My mother<br />
treats both young <strong>and</strong> old in the same way <strong>and</strong> is my pillar<br />
of strength. I am so thankful for what I have learned from her<br />
about planning my business <strong>and</strong> organising functions,”<br />
says Marida.<br />

Marida says the thing which drives her success now is that for many years, her<br />
life was solely focussed on her children, however now she can focus on her<br />
business as she no longer needs to support her children.<br />
“In the next five years I want to continue building strong leaders <strong>and</strong><br />
exp<strong>and</strong> my first downline. I am thankful to my downline for their hard work,<br />
wonderful personalities, working as a team <strong>and</strong> being willing to walk the extra<br />
mile with me,” she says.<br />
Marida says she is also grateful to her husb<strong>and</strong>, who has a great deal of<br />
business knowledge <strong>and</strong> supports her through everything. “I enjoy being<br />
financially independent <strong>and</strong> not having to rely on my husb<strong>and</strong> for money– I<br />
believe every woman should be financially independent <strong>and</strong> I enjoy making a<br />
difference in people’s lives,” she says.<br />
Marida adds that is wonderful to work for a company where Ernest <strong>and</strong><br />
Angelique, the owners, do so much for their employees, consultants <strong>and</strong><br />
clients. She says everyone is important to them, no matter what kind of sales<br />
they are doing for the business.<br />
“It’s not about sales <strong>and</strong> money for Ernest <strong>and</strong> Angelique, but rather<br />
about the person. It is a privilege to be part of <strong>Annique</strong>, as the company puts<br />
a great deal into their consultants to better themselves,” she says.<br />

Douwlene Hermon, events manager at <strong>Annique</strong>,<br />
says approximately R35 000 in raffle money was raised<br />
through both the Gauteng <strong>and</strong> Cape Town functions in<br />
support of Pippie Kruger, the three year old burn victim<br />
from Limpopo. Pippie suffered third degree burns over<br />
her body on New Year’s <strong>Day</strong> 2012 when a firelighter<br />
exploded in her father’s h<strong>and</strong>.<br />
The Gauteng function in the Club <strong>Annique</strong> theme<br />
proved to be a wonderful success among guests this<br />
year, with one of the major highlights being the launch<br />
of the new Hydrafine range. Guests were welcomed to<br />
the sounds of a soothing Marimba b<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> there was<br />
loads of excitement throughout the day.<br />
Consultants experienced a luxurious Pamper Party<br />
where they could indulge in Hydrafine products during<br />
the day. Life-changing testimonials were also shared<br />
by the consultants, who learnt new secrets on network<br />
building, product training <strong>and</strong> received some amazing<br />

Celeste scoops award for<br />
Senior Citizen of 2012<br />
It was smiles all around as Celeste van der Walt, a 73<br />
year old <strong>Annique</strong> consultant, took top honours winning<br />
the award for Senior Citizen of the Year 2012, by the<br />
Golden Oldies Fundraising Club, Eastern Cape <strong>and</strong> the<br />
Algoa Bay Council for the Aged on 1 October 2012.<br />
“To be the best senior citizen is not so much about your<br />
achievements, as it is about your contribution to the community<br />
that matters. I think it encourages seniors to keep on contributing<br />
<strong>and</strong> making a difference throughout life. I was surprised, thrilled<br />
<strong>and</strong> excited to have won the award,” she says.<br />
Celeste was nominated for the award by one of her<br />
consultants <strong>and</strong> won in the business category for her<br />
achievements over the last 10 years. In 2012 alone, she was<br />
awarded as the number 7 top achiever at <strong>Annique</strong>, qualifying for<br />
the overseas trip to Turkey in May by growing her business 20%<br />
during March 2011 to February 2012, reaching the R15 million<br />

During 2012, Celeste also became one of the four certified<br />

place to explore.<br />
AN EVOLVING SOCIETY<br />
Currently Vietnam is a combination of two different worlds – ancient<br />
<strong>and</strong> modern integrated into one society. Vietnamese society, its social<br />
structure <strong>and</strong> behaviour of people continues evolving with progressive<br />
economic development <strong>and</strong> outside influences. Young people are<br />
more independent from their parents compared to decades ago. New<br />
business opportunities <strong>and</strong> self-made success are more appealing to<br />
young people in Vietnam than several decades ago.<br />
DISTINCTIVE NAMES<br />
A Vietnamese name has a special meaning, distinct from other cultures<br />
<strong>and</strong> is often poetic <strong>and</strong> inspiring. The name consists of three parts, a<br />
first name, middle name <strong>and</strong> family name. An example is the name of<br />
Lin Dan Pham, a Vietnamese actress. ‘Pham’ is her first name, ‘Dan’<br />
is her middle name, <strong>and</strong> ‘Lin’ is her family name. It is common for<br />
a person to be called by one name, with a special meaning in the<br />
close family circle, but to use another name outside the family. Family<br />
names of the Vietnamese are more universal, yet have an ancient story,<br />
explaining the origins.<br />
BEST WAY TO ADDRESS VIETNAMESE<br />
To learn how to address a Vietnamese person with respect,<br />
appropriate in a cultural perspective, you must underst<strong>and</strong> the way<br />
Vietnamese people do it. The first name is used to address people in<br />
most situations, even formal ones, with the exception of very formal<br />
occasions, where the full name is used. Addressing a Vietnamese<br />
person by a family name or middle name is not appropriate. Introduce<br />
yourself in Vietnam using your first name <strong>and</strong> in a formal situation, use<br />
your title. People in Vietnam may often refer to you using the Ms title<br />
<strong>and</strong> your first name.<br />

Vietnam is an ancient<br />
country historically, but<br />
has a predominantly<br />
young population. The<br />
younger generation<br />
did not go through the hardships of previous generations <strong>and</strong> are<br />

country <strong>and</strong> help Vietnam get into leading positions, politically <strong>and</strong><br />
economically. Despite all the changes, the new generation is still<br />

Simple administration fee<br />
introduced in April 2013<br />
<strong>Annique</strong> Home Office has some fantastic news for<br />
consultants because as from 1 April 2013 a convenient<br />
administration fee will be introduced with every order to<br />
make your life simpler.<br />
Now you will only pay R15 for each order of <strong>Annique</strong><br />
products that you place. Management at <strong>Annique</strong> Home Office<br />
have chosen to continue subsidising the free delivery of orders<br />
valued at R1500 or more. This amount for the free delivery has<br />
not increased for the last 10 years.<br />
Renette Josling, Sales Manager at <strong>Annique</strong> Home Office,<br />
says the new convenient administration fee is hassle free for<br />
consultants because it is automatically added to every order.<br />
Consultants will continue receiving complimentary Business<br />
Kits when they place their first order of R1500 or more <strong>and</strong> will<br />
receive their free Beautè <strong>and</strong> <strong>Replique</strong> with their orders on the<br />
20th of each month.<br />
“With the implementation of the new administration fee,<br />
we are making the lives of our consultants far easier, as an<br />
unreasonable barrier to entry has been removed, allowing<br />
anyone to sign up as a consultant which is fantastic news,”<br />
she says. The annual re-registration fee will be falling away from<br />
1 April 2013.<br />
Enterprise Portal<br />

effective <strong>and</strong> quick. If you have not yet used the Enterprise Portal, you<br />
should definitely try this new SIMPLE, FUN <strong>and</strong> EASY electronic method<br />
of ordering, as it will speed up processing <strong>and</strong> delivering of your orders!<br />
If you order through the portal, your order is processed directly into<br />
our system. For peace of mind, it ensures the stock you purchase is in<br />
your possession before marketing it to clients as this will<br />
save you hassles.<br />
The portal is a more effective method of ordering as<br />
there is no re-capturing of data by a third party <strong>and</strong> no<br />
delays in paying for orders <strong>and</strong> the accuracy of the order<br />
is dependent on you. The stock is live on the system so<br />
you are able to quickly see what stock is available <strong>and</strong> can<br />
order products any time of day or night.<br />
“It is so much easier than the Electronic Order Form<br />
or faxing my order. I just click my way through products,<br />
add them to my shopping cart, pay by credit card <strong>and</strong><br />
VOILA, in a blink of an eye my order is confirmed by<br />
Home Office. I don’t have to worry about cut-off dates<br />
published in the <strong>Replique</strong>, because I can order until the<br />
last day of the month,” says Leslie Grobler, consultant<br />
from Bloemfontein.<br />
