unique establishment on the
north side of Asheville known as
The Arch opened two years ago
this month. I was able to speak
with the owner, Catherine Silver
about her vision for her company.
The striking logo on the front of the
building is certainly eye-catching, and
when I asked Catherine how she arrived
at the name for her business she responded
that she had always loved arches. For
her they represent timelessness and stability.
The products that she carries reflect
her love for these qualities as well.
Catherine brings an eclectic background
to her business. She lived on
the Big Island of Hawaii for ten years
and while there created a handmade tile
business. She has worked as an interior
designer, and, most recently,
taught for thirteen years in the
Buncombe County school system.
She formulated the idea for
her business because she wanted
to do something creative; with
the assistance of Mountain Micro
Enterprise, she was able to open
The Arch.
The Arch caters to a wide
clientele: builders, designers and
architects as well as home owners
simply wanting to improve the
aesthetic of their houses can find
a wide variety of beautiful accents
here. The showroom elegantly
displays a wide variety of flooring
and wall surfaces as well as accessories,
but Catherine stresses that even a simple
accent such as an unusual tile or knob can
set off a room. She sells anything from
that to entire installations.
The Arch represents
a large number
of local artisans, and
she has often collaborated
with them
to do custom work
for local builders.
Part of Catherine’s
vision is to be a good
reference for people,
to point them to
other sources for
products. Although
she stays on the
lookout for more
products to carry,
she is determined to
do something well,
rather than spread
herself too thin.
In line with her love of
timelessness and stability,
Catherine offers a large selection
of environmentally friendly
products. She carries cork and
bamboo flooring, as well as
Eco Timber hardwood flooring
which is highly respected by the
US Green Building Council.
She researches the production of
these products, taking care that
the flooring she sells contains no
formaldehyde. The American
Clay Earth Plaster, showcased on
the walls is also hypo-allergenic
as well as being very versatile and
beautiful. She has found that the builders
in this area have a good conscience about
using green products.
Looking to the future, Catherine
plans to host open house events and
workshops to help acquaint people with
the products she carries. She also welcomes
artisans to contact her about their
products in her quest to assist others in
creating healthier, more beautiful homes
and businesses.
