St. Vincent’s Healthcare Group Limited - Annual Review 2008 Education and Research Centre Review by Director of Translational Research, Dublin Academic Health Care, Prof. Douglas Veale Dear Colleagues, We have seen another year of unprecedented change, with very positive developments in clinical and biomedical research activities across the hospitals, the Clinical Research Centre (CRC) and the wider campus including: • Dublin Academic Healthcare Centre (DAHC) established; • Appointment of DAHC Directors of Translational Research and Postgraduate Education • Funding • Administration A key element of the research review was to bring researchers in St. Vincent’s University Hospital (SVUH) together in a coordinated programme with colleagues in University College Dublin (UCD). I am pleased to report with the development of the DAHC, we established the first academic medical centre in Ireland, this goal has been realised. While, undoubtedly challenges both logistic and financial remain, I believe that we are a much more robust group following this development. The DAHC development has already provided the infrastructure through the UCD CRC to provide essential core resources for clinical trials and research studies which has translated into more clinical trial activity being attracted to the centre. Translational Research In addition, to funding of specific programmes which was maintained at a high level last year, there were a number of new Translational initiatives. A coordinated DAHC scientific journal club meeting was established by Dr. Jacintha O’Sullivan and Dr. Ursula Fearon which welcomes researchers from The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital (MMUH) and Conway on a regular basis. We completed our first series of Translational Research Seminars and are now planning the second series. This has led to a number of substantial collaborative projects including Colorectal Cancer, Obesity, Medicine for the Elderly and Rheumatology to mention but a few. Finally, in 2008 we established and completed successfully the first year of two new PhD programmes in Translational Medicine and Biopharmaceutical / Pharmacological Sciences funded through UCD from PRTLI 4. Interestingly, in light of the recent announcement in relation to PRTLI 5 from the Office of the Taoiseach, in relation to joint UCD/Trinity College Dublin (TCD) funding of Life Sciences research, a joint proposal to fund two new Arthritis Chairs in Ireland was agreed, with one based in UCD. I believe this will provide significant benefits to the research community within the DAHC to create new and exciting links with colleagues across the country to enhance our international competitiveness. Development There was a major investment in research equipment made in 2008 to fund critical new technology for the group based in the ERC.
