The Aristocrat will be published online on a quarterly basis. It will be posted on the BCOA website as
a PDF so that you can print it if you like.
We will not be doing ads as part of the Aristocrat as we have the BCOA online ad feature already. The
issues will include all the content that was previously included in the Aristocrat section of the Borzoi
Connection (new title holders, statistics, articles from committee chairs and of course, annual awards
and specialty results).

for information on how to submit the best quality photos.
The quarterly deadlines are: Feb. 15, May 15, Aug.15 and Nov. 15. There will be a separate specialty
issue each year (so that you do not have to wait until August for the results and photos). If you are

BCOA Meet the Breed
Eukanuba National Dog Show, Orlando, Florida, December 17 & 18, 2011

The Eukanuba show has moved to the east
coast after 5 years in California. The venue
in Orlando was the Orange County convention
center, which is a huge complex and
we were lucky to find where we had to
enter and find our spot for our MTB booth.
After working on our display for many
months, fitting everything in a small car,
driving from Virginia to Florida and then
actually assembling our exhibit was quite
an experience.
Our theme this year was “From Russia
with Love”. We attempted to show Borzoi
in everyday situations and performance
venues, fun and serious, by displaying
poster-sized photos of these activities.
Without the generosity of the photographers
who donated fabulous photos, we
would not have been able to make our
booth a success.
Of course, we had Borzoi there to meet
and greet passersby; willing and waiting
for pats and compliments and being the
sweet dogs that they are. They were a big
hit. Several Borzoi owners were very willing
to share themselves and their Borzoi for
many hours both days. We all had lots of
fun meeting the public, sharing information
and stories about our Borzoi between ourselves
and anyone who asked about them.

Unique Zoitiques

After I’ve opened my cabinet doors to my Facebook
Friends, you’re probably wondering what I could
show you that you hadn’t already seen within my
curios. I know my cabinets are packed pretty full
and it was hard to see everything. For this issue I
thought I’d include items that were either not in a cabinet or difficult
to see and decided to show head studies since that is one of the
first things we look at when we look at a Borzoi.
I bought this ceramic piece at the 2009
BCOA/MBC specialty show held in
Frankenmuth, Michigan. It was in
the “garage sale items” and priced
very reasonably. It was cleverly
designed where the back actually
has a ceramic stand built onto it
so that you can display it on your
table without needing a plate
holder. It measures 5” tall and
sadly does not have a signature to
help identify the maker. While I’m
not fond of the dotted markings on
the face (ticking), I still believe it to be
worth around $25.
This hanging head study is made
of pewter which was
attached to glass.
There is pewter
surrounding the
glass giving it a
Tiffany stained
glass look to it. It
looks like someone
clipped off part of the
neck hair leaving it with a chopped
off appearance. I cannot remember where I purchased this piece,
but probably on eBay. The measurements are 3” x 5.5” with a nice
loop hanger soldered to the top for easy hanging. It is a weighty
piece, with a correct Borzoi ear and I value this at about $20.
Originally made to be an ashtray,
you wonder if the maker
had second thoughts.
I say this because
there are two
grooves for a cigarette
to be placed, yet the depth of the
ashes area is quite minimal. The detailing
is nice and is signed “Jacqueline.”
I have come across her signature on
several other breed items through the
years as well. If memory serves me
correctly, she was a featured artist at one of the larger pet shows
back in the 1980’s. The ear was cleverly blended into the neck hair,
although set a little low for my taste. Value on this 5” tall, hard to
find piece is $25.
Similar to the prior ceramic Borzoi
head, these are designed differently.
They not only faces
the opposite way, but
the ear looks to be
more sculpted
than etched
and the
forehead
has less of a
domed appearance. The
backing has a circular
hollowed out opening so
that you can easily hang it
on a hook. There is a gold foil label on the back that reads “Indi
Lane Ceramics by Fran.” I am quite certain this was a trophy at
one of the Midwest Borzoi Club shows in the 1980’s because these
belonged to my mom. Even though designed as a prize, the value
for each of these is $20.
I purchased this next
head study
from
eBay,
even
though
I know it
was a trophy for a dog show. Any
seasoned Borzoi person is familiar
with the works of
Garry Newton. Garry is known for
his lovely dog sculptures capturing
remarkable detail within each
subject he creates. My first encounter
with Garry was before he was a
judge. He had a booth at the BCOA
show held in Racine, WI in the 1990’s.
I was sharing a booth with my friend Joyce Brandin. During the
day, it would get boring sitting there waiting for people to come
around so all of us vendors would visit each other’s booths. That is
the year Garry donated the “Reflections” bronze where the Borzoi
was gazing down into a pond. While I could have ordered one
at that time, it was way over my head for affordability, but looking
back now, it was a steal and I pine over it to this day. Since I
bought this used, it had several scuffs and bruises. In good condition,
I would value this at $75. Measuring 5”, the detail is remarkable
and the ear is done exquisitely.

Currently dogs need only 1 QS in obedience to be ranked at year’s end. The dog with the OVERALL top average
score in novice, open &/or utility is ranked #1 overall in obedience. The #2 ranked Novice Borzoi won an
ALL BREED High In Trial this year (score 199). The single highest score earned this year was a 199½, earned
by the #1 Novice dog. The #3 ranked Novice dog won 2 Hound Specialty Club High In Trials.
If all Borzoi were included regardless of BCOA ownership, we would have had 18 more dogs listed here and
there.

Congratulations to Robin Stachon, who is not only our 2011 BCOA Top Junior Showman, but also the recipient of our first
annual Borzoi Club of America Junior Showmanship Scholarship - job well done, Robin!
I want to take this time to remind all juniors that the BCOA yearly scholarship award is available to our junior handlers who
meet the qualifications as stated on the junior page of the BCOA website: www.borzoiclubofamerica.com
As in years past, during the first part of 2011, I mailed out letters and membership applications on behalf of the Borzoi Club of
America to junior non-members. Sadly, not only have the number of non-member juniors handling Borzoi dwindled, so has the
number of BCOA junior members actually participating in junior competition gone down.
With that in mind, I would like to make the following proposal:
In an effort to encourage juniors to not only join, but to actually participate in junior competition, I would like to suggest that
in 2012 we open up our yearly BCOA Top Five Junior Certificates Of Recognition to all juniors (club members as well as nonmembers)
handling Borzoi in AKC sponsored junior showmanship competition. The only caveat would be that our Top Junior
Award and Number One Certificate can only be won by a junior showman who is a member of the Borzoi Club of America. If
any non-member should qualify to win the number two through five certificates, the appropriate certificate, along with a BCOA
letter of invitation and membership application, would be mailed out to that junior. It is my opinion that this is another positive
way to encourage children and their families to join and participate as members, while allowing them the opportunity to strive
for that number one award! I look forward to input from the board, as well as club members on this idea for increased involvement
by a larger number of juniors.
In closing, I would like to thank all those members who supported our BCOA junior members throughout the past year. I
encourage all club members to take the time in 2012 to get to know the young people who represent our breed’s future!

I don’t recall if I purchased this as
a wall hanging or a necklace,
but I doubt it would be worn
around my neck due to the
size. A very elegant looking
Borzoi head, it must
have been made by
someone that either
owned Borzoi
or had been very
close to one in their
life. The material feels like
it is a kiln fired clay rather
than ceramic. The sculptor was
proud enough of their creation to have
signed it “Mary McLerran.” So if you’re out there Mary, congratulations
on designing a simply lovely Borzoi head. This hangs on
the door of one of my cabinets, so perhaps you first got a glimpse
of it within my Facebook albums. Measuring 4” from nose to
opposite edge, the value on this as a necklace or a wall hanging is
$45.
This bronze head was purchased several years ago from a friend of
mine, Susan Motisi. She told me it was given as a trophy at one of
the dog shows. Several were also available for outright purchase
so she had bought a few. It measures 5” with nice detail, including
a beautiful ear. Of course
there is no signature
to determine
who
made
it. Pam
Leichtnam
believes it was
given at one of the Midwest
Borzoi Club shows, but didn’t recall
who the maker was. If I made something
this beautiful, you can bet that
I would be signing my name all
over it to let everyone know where
it came from. Surely a fine Borzoi
specimen that I value at $75.
It is getting quite difficult to locate
nice Borzoi collectibles these days.
I’m often asked how I managed to acquire such a collection. It
came from years of attending antique shows, hitting antique shops
and flea markets, and of course in the last 10 years, I managed to
accumulate many things from eBay. Whatever your Borzoi collecting
desire may be, if you see something you like, the best time to
buy it is then; as long as it is within your budget.
2011 Top Producers
One male, DC Sylvan Seabury Virago SC FCH ROMX-C, and two females, CH Tatezi Radio Flyer and CH Bibikov’s Jackie Blue, are
on the Top Producers list for 2011. Sires have to have 5 or more champions finished during the year, and dams have to have produced 3
or more champions finished during the year, to be on this list.
CH Tatezi Radio Flyer, had 3 offspring finished during 2011, from 1 litter whelped February 13, 2007. The litter was sired by Midknight
Southern Justice. They are:

Aristocrat Mission Statement
The Aristocrat is the official publication of the Borzoi Club of America and is published quarterly in order to inform,
educate and entertain the members by providing historical and current information on the Breed and issues affecting the
well-being of our Borzoi.
Statement of Intent:
It is the intent that the Aristocrat:
• Serve as a record of BCOA and its activities
• To provide a convenient forum for the reporting of statistics on the accomplishments of the members in conformation
and performance events.
Policies
• Deadlines for submission of material for the Aristocrat are February 15, May 15, August 15 and November 15. A
separate Specialty issue may be offered so that the results can be published as soon as possible after the National.
• Deadlines established by the Aristocrat Committee will be strictly adhered to.
• The right to reasonably edit all material or refuse to print material thought to be questionable or not in the best interest
of the breed or Club is reserved by the Aristocrat Committee and the Editor.
• Only signed letters or articles will be accepted for use.
• Only Borzoi related artwork will be utilized for the cover of the Aristocrat. If artwork is not available for a particular
issue then the Club Logo shall be utilized for the cover.
• The following material will be published in the Aristocrat issue immediately following the National Specialty:

the Aristocrat Committee or the Officers and Directors of the Borzoi Club of America.
• All content is subject to the final approval of the Aristocrat Committee.
• Results and photos from BCOA Trophy Supported entries will be included as provided by the TSE Show Chairman.
