2009-2010 Season<br />
CHIPOLA FINISHES SEASON 27-25<br />
The <strong>Chipola</strong> Indians finished the season with a 7-5 loss<br />
to Miami Dade in the semi-final round of the FCCAA State<br />
Tournament, May 8, 2010<br />
Miami scored 7 runs on 9 hits with no errors and left 5<br />
on base. <strong>Chipola</strong> scored 5 runs on 8 hits with two errors and<br />
8 men left on base.<br />
Cody Martin was 2 for 3 for <strong>Chipola</strong>. Tyler Wilson was 2<br />
for 2.<br />
The Indians finished second in the Panhandle Conference<br />
to Gulf Coast which was also eliminated from the state<br />
tournament. <strong>Chipola</strong> chalked up a 13-11 conference mark with<br />
an overall 27-25 record.<br />
<strong>Chipola</strong> outfielder Eric Sauls was named to the FCCAA<br />
All-State First Team. Sauls finished the year with a .347<br />
batting average with 66 hits, including 17 homeruns and 20<br />
doubles.<br />
<strong>Chipola</strong> outlasted St. Johns River 3-2 in the second round<br />
of the tournament. Indian pitcher Rodney Quintero logged a<br />
135-pitch performance allowing only seven hits while striking<br />
out ten in eight innings of work.<br />
The lightning strikes were not the only thing popping<br />
heard around Tigertown in Lakeland as <strong>Chipola</strong> (26-26)<br />
battled Palm Beach (36-13) in the opening round of the state<br />
tournament. The Indians were not able to keep pace with Palm<br />
Beach as the Indians lost 16-10 and were forced to battle their<br />
way back through the losers’ bracket.<br />
Eric Sauls’ three-run home run, his second home run of<br />
the game, capped a five-run seventh inning for the <strong>Chipola</strong><br />
and gave them a 10-8 lead. However, a 53-minute rain delayed<br />
occurred after the final out and the Indians were not able to<br />
continue their momentum after the delay.<br />
In the bottom of the seventh with two outs, Palm Beach<br />
pounced with their own three-run home run and then the<br />
Panther’s next batter hit a solo home run.<br />
Indian pitcher Johnny Cristi was unable to cover first base<br />
as Alex Bello for Palm Beach beat <strong>Chipola</strong>’s Evan Stermer<br />
to the bag. An ensuing throwing error put runners on second<br />
and third. Coach Johnson. “Today we didn’t throw enough<br />
strikes and made too many mistakes; that’s been the story of<br />
our year.”<br />

The Johnson Record<br />
Jeff Johnson is entering his 15th season at<br />
the helm of the <strong>Chipola</strong> <strong>Baseball</strong> Program.<br />
Coach Johnson has built <strong>Chipola</strong> into one<br />
of the premier JUCO programs in the country.<br />
Johnson has led the Indians to consecutive<br />
State and Region VIII Championships, in 2007<br />
and 2008 and berths in the JUCO World Series<br />
in Grand Junction, Co. winning <strong>Chipola</strong>’s first<br />
ever National Championship in 2007.<br />
The Indians have also won the extremely<br />
competitive Panhandle Conference Championships<br />
in six of the last ten years and were runners-up<br />
in 1997, 1998, 2008, 2009, and 2010.<br />
Coach Johnson has compiled an outstanding<br />
overall record of 492-257-2 (.656) and a Panhandle<br />
Conference record of 192-105 (.647).<br />
Johnson has received numerous coaching<br />
awards during his time at <strong>Chipola</strong>. He was<br />
named NJCAA National Coach of the year and<br />
ABCA/NJCAA Division 1 National Coach of the<br />
Year in 2007, NJCAA Gulf Region Coach of the<br />
year in 2007 and 2008, Panhandle Conference<br />
Coach of the Year in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005,<br />
2006, and 2007, Florida Diamond Club Coach<br />
of the Year in 2007, and Southeast Professional<br />
<strong>Baseball</strong> Association Coach of the Year<br />
in 2007.<br />
Johnson has done a tremendous work in<br />
graduating and developing players to move on<br />
to higher levels. He has had 148 players move<br />
on to four year universities and professional<br />
baseball. Twenty-six of his former players are<br />
currently playing professional baseball with<br />
two playing at the Major League level (Jose<br />
Bautista-3B Toronto Blue Jays and Russell<br />

Martin-Catcher Los Angeles Dodgers). <strong>Chipola</strong>’s<br />
most well known big leaguer is 2007 NL All Star<br />
Catcher and Silver Slugger Award winner Russell<br />
Martin. The 2003 alumnus is considered<br />
by most baseball experts as the top catcher in<br />
major league baseball. He also has Tyler Flowers<br />
(AAA White Sox), Mat Gamel (AAA Brewers),<br />
Cole Armstrong (AA White Sox), Rene Tosoni<br />
(AA Twins), Jaye Chapman (AA Braves), Adam<br />
Loewen (AA Blue Jays), Darren Ford (AA Giants),<br />
Barrett Browning (AA Angels), David Mixon<br />
(AA Giants), and Steve Clevenger (AA Cubs)<br />
along with many others at the Single A level.<br />
Johnson has coached three 1st round draft<br />
picks in LHP Adam Loewen (2003), RHP Alan<br />
Horne (2004), and LeVon Washington (2010),<br />
2nd round pick Patrick Corbin (2009), 3rd round<br />
picks LHP Kyle Pawelczyk (2002) and RHP<br />
Ryan Chaffee (2008) along with 4th rounder Mat<br />
Gamel (2005) who is considered the best hitter<br />
in Double A baseball.<br />
He has also coached three JUCO All-<br />
Americans in Matt Grooms, Tyler Flowers and<br />
Mat Gamel. In 2007, there were 5 former Indian<br />
players who were named MVP of their league or<br />
led their league in hitting or pitching.<br />
As a high school player Johnson was an All<br />
State selection in baseball, football, and basketball.<br />
He also holds the Florida State and National<br />
high school records for career interceptions with<br />
43 as a defensive back.<br />
Johnson’s began his career as a college<br />
baseball player at Gulf Coast Community <strong>College</strong><br />
where he was a pitcher and third baseman<br />
in the 1985 and 1986 for Head Coach Bill Frazier.<br />
He earned an AA degree from Gulf Coast<br />
in 1986. He then transferred to the University<br />
of Central Florida where he was a pitcher in the<br />
1987 and 1988 seasons. He held the school’s all<br />
time career saves record at one time and earned<br />
a BS in Physical Education.<br />
Johnson began his coaching career at Marianna<br />
High in 1989 where he led the Bulldogs<br />
to a 127-48 record in seven seasons. He led<br />
the team to three district championships, two<br />
regional championships and a sub-regional. He<br />
also won the school’s first-ever sectional championship<br />
and took the Bulldogs to their first-ever<br />
state championship final four in 1991.<br />
He returned to his hometown of Bristol,<br />
Florida in 1996 as head coach at Liberty County<br />
High where he compiled a 25-7 record with a runner-up<br />
finish in the 1996 state championship. He<br />
amassed a high school record of 152-55 (.734)<br />
in eight seasons.<br />
Coach Johnson and his wife Nancy have<br />
an 13 year old daughter Shelbie.<br />

Assistant Coach<br />
Matthew Addison is in his second<br />
year as Assistant Coach for the <strong>Chipola</strong><br />
<strong>Baseball</strong> Program where his duties include<br />
working with the Indian pitchers and<br />
outfielders, as well as serving as recruting<br />
coordinator.<br />
Addison came to <strong>Chipola</strong> after<br />
spending two years as the head baseball<br />
coach at Nettleton High School in Nettleton,<br />
MS. Prior to Nettleton, he spent three<br />
years as an assistant high school coach with stops at Cypress Creek<br />
High School in Orlando, FL, and Maclay High School and North Florida<br />
Christian both in Tallahassee, FL.<br />
Addison also served as a graduate assistant at his alma mater,<br />
Mississippi <strong>College</strong>. He also worked two summers for Harry Porter’s<br />
Mississippi Stars.<br />
In Addison’s young career, he has already coached ten players who<br />
have been drafted and/or signed a professional contract.<br />
As a player, Addison was a three time All-Conference shortstop at<br />
Jackson Prep in Jackson, MS. He went on to be a standout middle infielder<br />
at Mississippi <strong>College</strong> under Head Coach Lee Kuyrkendall. During his<br />
playing career, Addison was named Team Captain for his junior and senior<br />
seasons and was honored as Mississippi <strong>College</strong> Alumni’s Outstanding<br />
Senior Athlete.<br />
He earned his Bachelor’s degree as a Magna Cum Laude graduate<br />
in Chemistry and Biology in 2002 from Mississippi <strong>College</strong>.<br />
Addison is married to the former Katie Turner of Ocala, FL, and they<br />
have a two year old son, Banks.<br />

Assistant Coach<br />
Chris Hutcheson is in his first year as<br />
Assistant Coach for the <strong>Chipola</strong> <strong>Baseball</strong><br />
Program.<br />
Hutcheson came to <strong>Chipola</strong> after<br />
coaching at Lurleen B Wallace Community<br />
<strong>College</strong>. While at LBWCC, the Saints won<br />
four conference championships, two state<br />
championships and made two trips to the<br />
JUCO World Series finishing runner-up in<br />
2004.<br />
He went to Jefferson Davis Community <strong>College</strong> in 1997. While<br />
at JDCC, the Warhawks won 5 conference championships, two state<br />
championships and made two trips to the JUCO World Series winning<br />
the National Championship in 1998.<br />
Hutcheson began his coaching career in September 1996 at Okaloosa-Walton<br />
Community <strong>College</strong> as a volunteer assistant.<br />
Over the past ten years Hutcheson has been an Associate Scout for<br />
the Dodgers, Red Sox, Braves and Brewers organizations.<br />
