event, the biggest of its kind in Europe. 

Subsea 2012 is the leading event on the subsea industry’s calendar and 

brings together a wealth of participants from across the globe who are 

leaders in their fi elds. 

Our theme is particularly relevant this year. As the subsea industry 

continues to be at the forefront of development in new frontiers, going 

deeper and further than ever before, the sector must keep ahead in 

terms of research and development and maintains its market share. 

This year’s event provides an excellent opportunity to explore those 

challenges and hear the industry debate how to tackle the challenges. 

The conference will cover a range of topics including offshore renewables, 

the latest developments in subsea and marine construction, global 

subsea markets, new technology, safety performance and future skills. 

Ongoing commitment to embracing new technology will underpin much 

of the way we execute our work and develop the industry in the future. 

With the emergence of deep water drilling and pressure to extend the 

life of current assets, and technological advances which overcome the

subsea technologies and services, it is now a mature province which will

into new frontiers.

1410 Sensing of Molecular Species in Subsea Environments 

Dr Johannes Kiefer, Lecturer in Chemical Engineering,

The presentation will give an introduction to molecular sensing in aqueous 

environments using different spectroscopic methods. For example, 

vibrational spectroscopy is a suitable tool for detecting hydrocarbons 

and corrosive substances dissolved in water while fl uorescence 

techniques allow aromatic hydrocarbons and tracer dyes to be detected. 

Opportunities for future activities in the area of molecular sensing and 

sensor development will be outlined. 

1420 Molecular Sensing for Subsea 

Professor Pat Pollard, Director of the Centre for Research in Energy & 

Environment (CRE+E), Robert Gordon University 

This presentation will highlight some of the results of research carried out 

using laser based spectroscopy including Infra-red and Fluorescence to 

Monitor hydrocarbons, tracers and other species in the marine 

environment. These can be used for detection and on-line monitoring and 

could be integrated in AUVs and ROVs. Some research areas for future 

collaboration with industry will be presented. 

1440 Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy 

Dr David Hendry and Dr Thanga Thevar, Communications and Optical 

Engineering Research group, University of Aberdeen 

The principles of laser induced breakdown spectroscopy will be 

described. The technique provides a means for atomic analysis of many 

materials with little or no preparation. This process has been widely 

implemented in shallow waters and in air, research at the University of 

Aberdeen is now intending to deploy this technique in deeper waters. 

Potential applications are sought in air, shallow and deep waters. 

1450 Optical sensors for subsea applications 

Dr. Radhakrishna Prabhu, Lecturer in School of Engineering, Robert 

Gordon University 

This presentation will cover some of the optical and spectroscopic 

approaches for sensing and monitoring in subsea environments. It will 

include applications such as measurement & control and structural 

integrity monitoring. This will also include some results from the current 

research work in the area of optical sensors and will outline possible 

future collaborations.

1510 Applications of Acoustic Emission sensor systems

This presentation will cover the results of research carried out in 

developing applications of Acoustic Emission which might be relevant to 

the monitoring, maintenance and management of subsea installations. 

This will include brief examples of applications such as machine 

monitoring, AE wave propagation in pipe lines, material testing, and sand 

monitoring. The examples range from fairly mature applications to some 

possible new applications. Some research areas for future collaboration 

with industry will be outlined. 

1520 Dynamic Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks 

Dr Alastair Allen, University of Aberdeen 

Subsea industries face a number of technical challenges in the area 

of remote sensing and control. By bringing together the technologies 

of underwater communications and results from terrestrial sensor 

networking, the development of underwater wireless sensor networking 

(UWSN) promises solutions to many of these problems. Underwater 

sensor networks may include both static and mobile sensors: these 

may join and leave sensor groups dynamically. A number of gaps in the 

existing UWSN research are identifi ed and solutions are proposed which 

include effi cient network routing protocols and dynamic reconfi gurability. 

1530 Nano-particulate foam based multi-modal sensor for simultaneous 

detection of pressure and gas leakage in the subsea environment 

Dr. Ketan Pancholi, Lecturer School of Engineering 

Robert Gordon University 

The high deformation rate and surface area of solidus or liquidus foam 

can be employed as a large scale sensor for various sensing modalities. 

The magnetic nano-particulate stabilised micro-foam prepared at 

RGU has demonstrated its capability as a gas leakage detector and 

a pressure sensor. In this presentation, the results will be outlined to 

show its possible use in the subsea environment. The future direction for 

developing sensor based on nanotechnologies will also be summarised. 

1540 Quantum based sensing technology 

Dr Charles Wang, Reader in Dynamics and Cruickshank Lecturer in 

Astronomy, University of Aberdeen 

This talk will provide an outline on precision sensing of gravitational and 

magnetic forces in a portable compact sensor being developed in the 

S3C Lab at Aberdeen. The technology is based on recent advances 

in laser and quantum atomic optics and offers improved sensitivity, 

compactness, mobility and lower power consumption. It should make 

possible the deployment of precision sensors in subsea environments for 

applications in survey and inspection underwater using AUVs and ROVs.

Nimi is a Deepwater Subsea Specialist Engineer with 11 years 

of verse experience in technical, leadership and management in 

the offshore oil and gas industry. Experienced on offshore field 

developments, subsea production systems, subsea processing, 

flow assurance, production optimisation, interface management & 

project execution, oil and gas strategic business management for 

both onshore and offshore operations. Throughout this time he has 

held various positions with Shell, Greater Offshore and Cameron. 

He hold a BEng (Hons) in Electronic & Electrical Engineering in the 

University of Sunderland UK, MSc on Subsea Engineering in Cranfield 

University UK and a PhD Researcher on Subsea Systems Engineering 

at Cranfield University UK. He is a member of SUT, SPE and IMarEST.

Chris has spent 10 years in the process sector and 26 years in 

the energy sector. A solid engineering and business background 

working at senior levels since 2000 in director roles. 

He has experience in running businesses, operations and capital 

projects with an excellent track record of both business turn arounds 

and high growth to maximise both shareholder returns and benefits 

to stakeholders. Chris has held roles in engineering and project 

management, asset management and director roles up to Managing 

Director. All the businesses that he has been involved with have 

achieved major growth, success and increased profile in the market 

place.

protection design options and relevance of existing design standards

Jim Britton has worked in the offshore corrosion field since 1973. 

He was educated in the UK and began his offshore career in the 

North Sea in the 1970’s. In 1982 he relocated to Houston, where he 

formed Deepwater Corrosion Services in 1986. Deepwater EU Ltd, 

a subsidiary of DCS, was formed in the late 1990’s. 

Jim has published dozens of technical papers and written numerous 

articles on offshore-corrosion-related issues. He holds several patents 

for technology associated with asset integrity management. For the 

last 15 years, he has focused his efforts largely on asset life extension 

methodologies and cathodic protection retrofit technology. 

Finlay Crossan 

Bond Pearce LLP 

A wind of change for risk factors 


Finlay Crossan is a partner in national law firm Bond Pearce with 

more than 25 years’ experience in the oil and gas industry. 

He spent 18 years with the legal team of Wood Group through its 

growth into an international energy services company and seven years 

with the oil and gas team of law firm Ledingham Chalmers before 

joining Bond Pearce to establish its Aberdeen office in 2007. 

He specialises in development projects and supply chain contracts, 

advising operators and contractors on exploration, development, 

operation and decommissioning, onshore and offshore, in the UK and 

internationally. 

Finlay is also experienced in the growing practice area of renewable 

energy and is highly recommended in the Legal 500 guide to law firms 

and lawyers. 

Chris’s current role is very demanding covering a budget of £1b / year 

covering upstream projects, gas storage projects, supporting offshore 

wind farm projects, drilling and wells, all engineering functions and 

HSEQ along with the general management to ensure high performance 

and growth of the company which has been hugely successfully.

Blair has over 20 years’ commercial experience in software 

design and network technologies, providing solutions for public 

companies including RBS, Abbot Group plc, Danop/DONG, 

Bulthaup GmbH and Peel Holdings plc. 

From 2005, he has served as Chief Technology Officer of Coda 

Octopus Group, Inc. and Senior Vice President with Coda Octopus 

Products Ltd between 2004 and 2005. He is currently Head of all R&D 

activities in Coda Octopus with primary responsibility for development 

of the Echoscope ® technology family and cutting edge Underwater 

Inspection System based solution platform.

Soren holds a B.Sc. in mechanical engineering and is a business 

candidate from Norway. He was employed by Det Norske Veritas – 

DNV from 1978 until 1993 and held several leading positions for the 

Classification society in Norway and internationally. 

From 1993, Soren was employed by Hitec and later Grenland Group

Andrew Donaldson

Andrew is responsible for SSE’s offshore engineering activities. He 

played a leading role in establishing the firm’s Glasgow Offshore 

office and has led the creation and delivery of an alliance based 

project delivery organisation which feature Siemens, Subsea 7, 

Bi-Fab and Atkins in one group and Mitsubishi, Technip and Wood 

Group in the other. 

He first became involved in offshore wind in 2001 when he led the 

Atkins team that supported Talisman’s Beatrice development from 

project initiation through to appointment of SSE as a JV partner. He 

subsequently joined SSE, in 2008 as engineering manager on the 

Greater Gabbard project before moving into his current role. 

He has some 20 years’ diverse experience of oil and gas engineering, 

initially with DNV and Atkins before working as an Offshore Installation 

Manager with Shell and latterly as Group Engineering Director for the 

Expro Group. 

Conor Gallagher

Conor Gallagher has been with MCS Kenny since December of 

2008. Conor holds a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the 

University of Limerick in Ireland, and previous to joining MCS 

Kenny he worked as a lead fuel system engineer on air-to-air 

refuelling systems for Airbus UK. 

Conor has considerable experience in riser configuration design and 

analysis, particularly in the use of MCS Kenny riser engineering software 

tools Flexcom and Deepriser for the analysis and design of drilling and 

workover/completion risers. Conor has been involved as project engineer 

and project manager for drilling projects in water depths up to 12,000ft 

in locations all over the world including the North Sea, Gulf of Mexico 

and West of Africa. As part of his work on the MCS Kenny drilling team, 

Conor has had various short term consultancy secondments in Norway 

with MCS Kenny clients such as Aker and FMC. 

Andrew graduated from the University of Glasgow with a degree in 

Civil Engineering and subsequently gained an MBA. He is a Chartered 

Engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and a 

Member of the Institution of Structural Engineers.

Following his graduation from Aberdeen University as a scientist, 

Brian Green has 30 years’ experience in the offshore industry. 

He has been a director and general manager of various innovative 

businesses since 1990. As general manager of First Subsea Ltd, 

he is responsible for the continued growth of the Ballgrab ® subsea 

connection systems business and development of new niche markets 

such as riser technologies and marine renewables. 

Brian is a keen supporter of industry bodies such as the Society for 

Underwater Technology and has played a key role in various Subsea 

UK initiatives. In 2010 he was co-opted to the board of Subsea UK, 

the UK’s leading industry body for the British subsea industry. The 

appointment recognised Brain’s contribution to the UK’s subsea 

industry and the leading role of First Subsea in deepwater mooring 

worldwide. Brian is representing the views of Subsea UK’s North West 

of England membership on business and safety issues. 

Sam Hanton

Sam is Chief Surveyor at Nautronix and is responsible for all of 

Nautronix’s survey and positioning activities, as well as having 

input into system developments. He joined Nautronix in 2008 from 

Subsea 7 where he had held a number of survey related positions 

over a period of 10 years. 

Sam initially worked offshore on a range of survey and construction 

vessels before moving onshore as project surveyor in Subsea 7’s 

Norwegian office. He then moved into the lead survey role for the 

region before joining Nautronix after the successful use of their 

NASNet ® positioning system on the Agbami project. 

Sam graduated from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne with a 

degree in Surveying and Mapping Science. He is a Chartered Surveyor 

- a Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, and an 

elected member of IMCA’s Offshore Survey Division management 

committee. 

Andrew Hunt

Andrew Hunt is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer and holds the 

position of Principal Engineer (Renewables) at SMD, a subsea 

engineering company based in Newcastle Upon Tyne. 

Andrew graduated from Loughborough University of Technology 

in 1994 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He began his 

engineering career within the Aerospace sector working for a large blue 

chip company on a range of civilian and military projects including the 

Joint Strike Fighter. 

Joining SMD in 1997 as a Design Engineer he has been involved in 

all aspects of subsea vehicle manufacture from design, procurement, 

assembly, commissioning, test, installation and operations. After a 

short break working for SMD’s then sister company PEL designing 

hardware for clearing landmines, he returned to SMD to lead the TidEL 

project. This in turn led to the collaborative project between Atlantis 

Current Resources and SMD to deliver the AK1000 tidal turbine in a 

remarkably short timescale. 

The combination of designing and manufacturing marine energy 

converters and with SMD’s existing subsea vehicle knowledge has 

opened up a whole new world of subsea engineering opportunities. 

In his presentation, Andrew will explore the possible shape of things 

to come for subsea vehicles for assisting in the installation of marine 

energy converters in the future. 

Paul Jones

Paul Jones is Manager of Chevron’s Subsea Unit in ETC, 

responsible for over 150 globally based staff working in Technology 

Development, Project Development and Execution, and Internal 

Consulting to Chevron’s Upstream Operating Companies. 

During his 26-year career in Chevron he has held positions in Chevron’s 

R&D and operating organisations including a secondment position 

with the Kuwait Oil Company. From 2007-10, Paul was the Manager of 

Chevron’s Global Technology Center in Perth, Australia, and a Director 

of Chevron Energy Technology Pty Ltd. 

In 2005 he was the recipient of the Society of Petroleum Engineers 

Projects, Facilities and Construction Award for distinguished

Mike is a Senior Project Engineer within Technip Offshore Wind Ltd 

who has been a key member of the project team working on the 

Centrica Lincs Wind Farm Project in the Wash Lincolnshire since 

the project began in 2010. Mike has been involved in the detailed 

onshore engineering and offshore execution of the project from 

the landfall site onshore out to the offshore substation and turbine 

field. 

With 4 years experience in Oil and Gas as a Project and Field Engineer 

prior to joining Technip, Mike has broad experience in delivering high 

quality engineering solutions for a variety of clients both in the UK and 

abroad having worked extensively in the Norwegian sector for Statoil 

and also the Danish sector for Dong Energy. 

He started his engineering career as a graduate with Acergy developing 

himself within the Subsea construction discipline, specifically Remote 

Intervention activities. Mike has been involved in a wide variety of work 

in the Aberdeen Stavanger and Paris offices.

Matthew Kennedy

Matthew Kennedy is a Subsea Integrity Manager with 30 years of 

experience working in the subsea and inspection industry and is a 

member of the British Institute of NDT. 

Currently with Oceaneering, Matthew has a military background, is 

a qualified welding engineer and a former commercial diver who has 

delivered many North Sea subsea inspection projects. 

In recent years he has successfully designed, developed and fielded 

ROV deployed, high resolution, subsea ultrasonic inspection tooling. 

Matthew continues to be involved at the forefront of innovative subsea 

inspection applications. 

David Liddle is a graduate of Imperial College of Science and 

Technology London. He gained his first degree in Aeronautical 

Engineering and immediately went into a different medium – 

underwater. 

David has been involved in the design, manufacture, development, 

and commercialisation of high technology products in the offshore oil 

and gas industry for over 35 years. He spent the first half of his career 

in the design and manufacture of underwater vehicles, both manned 

and unmanned. 

David gained his MBA with Aberdeen University and has provided 

support to small and medium sized enterprises in developing and 

commercialising their own products and services. David is now the 

Director Strategic Technology with ITF (the Industry Technology 

Facilitator), which includes responsibility for identifying and delivering 

solutions to the technology challenges within the oil and gas industry. 

Jonathan Ralph

Ralph qualified from Newcastle upon Tyne University with a 1st 

class Honours in Mechanical Engineering in 1992, sponsored by 

Rolls Royce. 

Post qualification, Ralph designed steam turbines at Rolls Royce Power 

Generation Systems, including upgrades to Hunterston Nuclear Power 

Station, until 1996. 

For the past 16 years Ralph has been involved in subsea and marine 

engineering, including subsea vehicles, cable, pipelay and renewable 

equipment. Working initially at SMD Ltd he joined IHC EB in 2007 

engineering hard soil trenching equipment and more recently a Reel 

Lay system.

Duncan is the director of the Engineering Development Trust (EDT), 

and has over 30 years’ experience in strategic management and 

organisational training and development. 

With a degree in management from Heriot Watt University, he has 

held posts as company director, as well as being a business executive 

with Scottish Enterprise. He has also lectured in business and 

entrepreneurial management. Since becoming director eight years ago, 

he has grown the EDT to become one of Scotland’s leading schools 

science and engineering activity providers. His aim is to have the 

industrial sector play a significant role in supporting EDT activities to

Stuart Mitchell, 38, graduated from Surrey 

University with a Mechanical Engineering and Business 

Management degree. Prior to setting up Flexlife, he worked 

firstly with Wellstream as the team lead for the analysis group in 

Newcastle, responsible for all aspects of bid support and project 

based local and global analysis. 

He then moved to Subsea 7 where he looked after all aspects of 

flexible and umbilical pipeline installation engineering. 

After recognising an opportunity to improve service, Stuart set up 

Flexlife with John Marsden in 2007. Since inception Flexlife has 

become an industry leader in subsea integrity management and 

subsea project management through a worldclass team with extensive

Kevin Moran commenced working with DOF Subsea in May 

2011 as Vice President - Renewables. Formerly Strategy and

Energy Services, his early career was in the Merchant Navy where 

he attained the rank of Chief Engineer Officer. He subsequently 

returned to education at Strathclyde University where he 

graduated with a BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering.

Tom O’Donnell is the Subsea Intervention Team Lead in the Subsea 

Unit. He has been employed with Chevron for five years and has 

over fifteen years of subsea project and offshore experience. 

Since joining Chevron, Tom has worked to support Chevrons Global 

Subsea community, Business Units, and projects. Tom and his team 

provide technical consulting and technical development solutions 

for Subsea Installation, Intervention, Survey, Inspection, Repair and 

Maintenance. In the spring and summer of 2010 Tom was seconded 

to BP during the Macondo Well Blowout and supported the response 

effort both offshore and onshore. Tom is from Texas and has two

Luc Riviere is graduated from the Paris ‘Ecole Superieure 

d’Electricite’ and from the Paris ‘Ecole Nationale Superieure des

He began his career in Field Operations in Total working within different 

subsidiaries, especially Gabon, the Netherlands, and Congo.

Jan Siesjö studied physics and electronics at the University of 

Linkoping LiTH in Sweden. He joined SUTEC AB in 1986 designing

Since then he has been responsible for the design and development 

of several ROV and AUV systems. Jan has also been leading the 

development of seismic streamer simulation software for the Oil and 

Gas Industry. For the last 10 years Jan has been the Chief Engineer for

Having completed an honours degree in Environmental Sciences 

at Napier University, Edinburgh, Richard joined the British Army in 

2000 as a 22 year old. 

Selected for Officer training, he attended the year long commissioning 

course at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst before joining his 

Regiment, The Royal Scots. As an Infantry Officer he completed four 

operational tours and developed specialisations in Jungle Warfare 

and Communications and Information Technology before deciding 

to return to civilian life. Since leaving the Army in 2007 Richard 

has been a director of his own company specialising in defence, 

telecommunications and IT and recruitment consultancy before moving 

his home to the North East of Scotland and diversifying into Oil and

As SeeByte’s Sales Manager, Ioseba (known as Joe) is responsible 

for the development of SeeByte’s commercial strategies and 

managing the marketing sales process within the company. He has 

been involved in developing smart solutions for the underwater 

vehicle industry for more than 10 years and continues to lend his 

engineering expertise to the team. Ioseba’s focus on customer 

relationships and needs was the driver behind his transition to 

SeeByte’s sales team. 

Ioseba joined SeeByte as a founding member of the management team 

and initially led the development of navigation, sonar imaging and sonar 

processing tools. He has played an integral role in the development of 

SeeTrack and was the recipient of a SMART Award. Prior to SeeByte he 

worked as a Research Associate at Heriot-Watt University developing

Dave is the VP Subsea Production Operations, globally functionally 

responsible for the performance of the subsea infrastructure, 

providing safe operations, availability and risk mitigation - and for 

building the subsea operations organisational capacity. 

He was the GoM Subsea Operations Manager, based in Houston from 

October 2007 until August 2011 and prior to that was based in the North 

Sea, where he developed and managed the subsea organisation. 

In 2004, Dave became the overall Manager of BP’s North Sea Subsea 

Business, supporting the cross-asset portfolio of projects and operating 

Performance Units. This included responsibility for the UK’s first 

operational deepwater subsea production business West of Shetland, 

the Foinaven and Schiehallion fields. 

In his early career he held posts in Operations and Development 

Planning which lead into the emerging subsea Projects and Operations 

business, including structural and pipeline repair programs. He was the 

Project Engineer for BP’s very first subsea production flexible tie-back. 

His emergence into subsea engineering came from a Project Engineering 

role implementing underwater repairs to the 500 mboepd Forties field 

structures, requiring hyberbaric, cofferdam and grouted brace repairs. 

In 2005 he was awarded the Society of Underwater Technology “David 

Partridge Award for Technology Achievement” and in 2007, he received

Mike Wilson is the founder and Managing Director of Aberdeenbased

These have predominantly been trenching ploughs of up to 200 tonnes 

but also subsea manifolds, pipelines and their terminations as well as the 

odd platform jacket and topside units of several thousand tonnes. 

The Turriff-born entrepreneur has worked in countless locations across 

the globe, including having been project manager of a trenching project 

worth US$40 million in South Korea. 

Set up in 1996, Ecosse Subsea Systems provides trenching services, 

subsea lifting, subsea technologies and specialist personnel to subsea 

oil and gas markets across the globe. The company recently announced 

that annual revenues had reached £1.9 million.

Stephen Wilson is an engineering graduate from Leeds University 

and has held a number of commercial, business development and 

marketing roles during his career. 

Stephen joined the renewables sector in 2004 working his way up 

through three roles at Narec (the National Renewable Energy Centre) 

culminating in his position of Director of Wind and Marine for this 

world leading technology development centre. Stephen has work 

closely with government and industry bodies such as DECC, BIS, ETI 

and RenewableUK during the last five years and has travelled widely

inspection markets in 2005, the AC-ROV is now established and 

supported by a global distributor network as the most capable and 

portable underwater inspection system on the market. It defines

that removes hard & soft marine growth from submerged steel,

Spitznas is best known for their Air Tools but they have been 

manufacturing Hydraulic Drive Units for over 20 years. 

Maxim are showing the full range of Spitznas hand held Underwater 

Hydraulic Tools including their Peanut Grinder, Hammer Drill and

Weatherford Production Optimisation UK Ltd specialise in the 

design and manufacture of subsea control modules, subsea 

distribution, data acquisition and surveillance systems globally. 

In addition to subsea control, Weatherford are highly regarded for
