FIMA PERTH LOOKING AFTER THE sQUADRON
By CPOETSM Bill Mansfield
FIMA Perth Submarine Manager
A team of sixteen personnel from FIMA Perth
supported HMAS SHEEAN with a two-week
Assisted Maintenance Period in Pearl Harbor
Hawaii between 22 July – 5 August 2002. This
proved to be a valuable exercise in liaison
between FIMA Perth, SERG, ASC and various
contractors. The FIMA Perth team completed
almost sixty per cent of the Intermediate Level
Maintenance package including EABS checks,
Pre Combustion Nozzle maintenance, nearly all
diesel work, main motor maintenance and
generator work. This ensured that Navy
personnel gained experience in performing tasks
normally given to contractors.
windsurf, some found the bars and some even
decided to do a submarine acquaint!
Petty Officer Joe Hackenberg getting a few tips
onboard the WW 2 submarine USS BOWFIN (the
Pearl Harbor Avenger)
ABAWASM Terry Webster and LSETSM Mark
Cheffins undertaking maintenance on EABS
masks.
The activity was accomplished in a spirit of
mutual cooperation with all parties working
towards a satisfied customer. From my point of
view it was good to see all agencies cooperating
so well and the fact that SHEEAN sailed twentyfour
hours early with all essential maintenance
completed speaks for itself.
After two weeks of long hours (and two
Amazonian rain forests worth of paperwork!) the
FIMA Perth team was able to relax and explore
the sights and sounds of Hawaii. Some chose to
LS Ricky Clist, LS Rod (Rocket) Turnbull, AB
Matt Moala and AB Andy Wotton enjoying the
facilities in the BEEMAN Center
FIMA’s motto is "Where and When needed" and
I would like to take this opportunity to say that
we are ready to provide a Deployed Forward
Action Group (DFAG) in support of deployed
Submarines, 24/7 as they say.
See you at RIMPAC 2004!
