STUDENT LIFE AT SWINBUURNE
Student life at Swinburne is not just
about lectures, study and exams. Take
time out, have some fun. There are a
whole range of events and activities,
across all of our campuses, to entertain
you. Swinburne student organisations –
run by students for students – provide
you with the best opportunities to have
a good time, whilst having a say in what
you’d like to do as a Swinburne student.
Both the Swinburne Student Union
(SSU) and the Swinburne Sport and
Recreation Association (Swinergy) offer
you great ways to get involved.
Orientation
Orientation Week is for new students
and is held before classes begin to help
familiarise you with your campus and the
services available. The Student Union
facilitates the Orientation Host scheme
on most campuses. O Hosts will take you
on tours, and give you the inside story on
life at Swinburne! As well, the SSU offers
info sessions, live entertainment and free
food. Generally the big O Week events
will be scheduled for particular days –
but individual events are often organised
locally for some departments, so look out
for these too.
Union night
Each year the Union celebrates the
beginning of the New Year with an
evening of music and entertainment.
Information about these events can be
obtained from your Student Union
administration or by contacting
(03) 9214 5456.
Union Ball
The Union Ball is a signature event
organised jointly between the clubs and
societies and activities departments.
Over 400 students attend the black tie
event each year marking its popularity
and success. Further information about
the ball can be obtained by contacting
the SSU Clubs Officer on your campus.
Clubs and societies
There are over sixty clubs affiliated
across Swinburne’s six campuses. Clubs
cover a range of interests including
academic, cultural, religious and social.
Affiliated clubs are entitled funding in
accordance with membership numbers
and Further Education funding for special
events. For information about existing
clubs or advice on starting a club, contact
the SSU Clubs Officer on your campus.
3SSR
Swinburne Student Radio is an
independent association founded by
Swinburne students in 1998. The station
has been broadcasting under a temporary
license on the FM band since then. There
are a range of programs appealing to a
broad cross-section of the Swinburne
and greater community. Visit 3SSR at
www.3ssr.org.au or contact the station
manager on (03) 9214 8869.
Off-campus
The Student Union hosts many off-campus
events each year, especially through the
Clubs and Societies program. These often
include river cruises, movie nights and
nightclub tours. Check out the SSU
website, The Swine,and local
noticeboards for forthcoming events.
Welcome Back Week
First week of semester marks the
beginning of a week of festivities. Students
are given the opportunity to participate in
