Lieutenant Colonel,
United States Army
Professor and Chair
Greetings to the Horned Frog
Battalion Family!
As the new Professor of Military
Science (PMS), I’m honored and
privileged to serve the cadets, cadre,
and faculty at Texas Christian
University, Baylor University, and the
University of North Texas as the
senior Army representative with
Master Sergeant (P) Brian Bruce. My
family and I are excited about the
opportunity to continue the
incredible legacy and traditions of
these programs.
My family and I come to north Texas
from southern Oklahoma, more
specifically Lawton/Fort Sill where I
was fortunate to command the 1 st
Battalion, 30 th Field Artillery
Regiment the past two years. For
the past 20 years I have been a Field
Artillery Officer and also lucky
enough to have taught at West Point
and served previously as the PMS at
the University of California – Los
Angeles.
The battalion and detachments are
almost two-thirds of the way
through our Fall Semester.
As we started off the year I
established three priorities for our
cadets/cadre – (1) first and foremost
is their Academics as priority
number one, (2) secondly, the TCU,
Baylor, and UNT college experience
– I want them to be active in their
respective schools, and then (3)
finally, developing themselves and
their leadership abilities during
ROTC classroom and lab training.
The cadre and I continue to be
amazed at the success of our cadets –
310 strong across the three schools.
We truly appreciate their efforts and
commitment to develop into our
future leaders for the Army and
Country and our program is a
reflection of their up-bringing. I
appreciate your support to the
program and again, it is truly an
honor for the cadre and I to coach,
teach, and mentor these super young
men and women. Please do not
hesitate to call or stop by to visit us.
Joel Coleman
Major (Ret), US Army
MS III Instructor
Operations Officer
We all knew we were going to get one, just
not when.
"Platoon...Attention!" our platoon sergeant
called loudly. I was standing in 1st Platoon,
4th squad. I was a proud paratrooper in
Charlie Company, 2/504 PIR, 82 nd Airborne
Division.
We were figuratively the "business squad,”
in back of the other three where
everything and anything that really
mattered took place.
Standing behind our platoon was a cherry,
a new guy with -- get this -- a shiny gold bar
on his cap. He was a second lieutenant.
He looked my age, maybe a year or two
older. He moved up front, saluted our
platoon sergeant and put us at ease. He
introduced himself, mentioned where he
went to school and said he was looking
forward to working with us.
He should be older, I thought. He
graduated high-school one year before me.
How does his “college degree” give him the
right to lead airborne infantrymen in
training much less combat? It seemed
unfair and I personally didn't like having
him around.
MAJ Coleman’s Fitness Tips
*Take physical fitness seriously right
now in college
*Make physical fitness part of who you
are for your entire life
*Eat right
*Give 100% every time you work out
*Stay positive!
Over the next month the general scuttlebutt
was that things were better before he got
here. We went to the field a couple times;
no changes except the "Leaders Recons"
took about twice as long. So far I was not
impressed.
After a couple of months we had a Physical
Fitness test. Everyone wondered how he
would do, especially me. I had been in
ROTC. I needed to see something from this
guy because as it currently stood, it was not
fun having him around.
On test day, 2 nd Lieutenant Spade scored a
300. He outscored my 287 by running faster
then everyone in the platoon except for
Chaney; nobody could beat Chaney on the
run.
After this things began to change. In my
mind, he finally set the standard and started
to fill my expectations for what I expected of
a 2 nd Lieutenant.
This experience set the tone for the rest of
my career in the United States Army.
Physical fitness is where leadership starts or
ends. If you set the example, you’ll fulfill
what’s expected of you; if you don’t, you
instantly inhibit your leadership potential.
It’s simple to start setting the example now.
- Take physical fitness seriously right now in
college
- Make physical fitness part of who you are
for your entire life
- Eat right
- Give 100% every time you work out
- Stay positive!
If you implement these five simple points,
you will be well on your way to being an
outstanding leader in this program and in
the United States Army.
We have gotten off to a fast start this
year with successful PT tests,
battalion events, intramural teams
and Ranger Challenge competitions.
Let’s keep the big picture in sight
even though we have enjoyed such
success.
Remember to make your grades and
enjoy the college experience.
We’re coming into the homestretch
of the year and we all must make the
big push to finish the year with a
great Grade Point Average (GPA).
In the next few years your academics
will play a big role in determining the
rest of your Army career, so keep
those grades at the forefront of your

Enjoy the college experience. As a
senior I can tell you that it flies by all
too quickly and soon you will be facing
the real world and your chosen career.
Seize the moment, cherish the
memories and live your life to the
fullest.
