Happy New Year! To celebrate the start of 2009, we
would like to preserve that which has been positive
in the previous year, and look forward to even more
wonderful things to come.
Therefore, we are pleased to extend three inspiring
and thought-provoking exhibitions: Picasso on
Paper through February 22, Of Life and Loss
through March 15, and Ten through April 5. These
presentations have garnered such an enthusiastic
response from our visitors that we would like to
share them with you for just a bit longer.
Looking ahead, we have recently acquired some
major new contemporary works that greatly augment
our permanent collection. A dramatic example
is the photograph, Musee du Louvre Paris XI,
2005, as presented on the cover of this issue, and
made possible by funds from an anonymous donor.
This very large scale image (more than 8’ x 6’) is
by Candida Höfer who specializes in large-format
photographs of empty interiors and social spaces
that capture the “psychology of social architecture.”
Additional exciting acquisitions include a 1971 TV
Dinner series by Robert Heinecken, and a 1989
untitled “heat sensor” painting by Jack Goldstein,
two artists significant to the development of
California art in the 1970s and 1980s; and
exceptional works by young Southern California
artists Amy Adler and Edgar Arceneaux. These will
be on view in an exhibition of recent contemporary
acquisitions in March.
We thank you for your continued support of SBMA,
and look forward to a year filled with exciting new
art experiences.
Sincerely,
Mystery in
Masterpieces
On October 4 the Women’s Board presented
Mystery in Masterpieces, a splendid evening of
glamour featuring the exhibition, Made in
Hollywood. Guests roamed through the
Museum’s galleries with challenging clues in
hand searching for answers found in the works
of art. This widely popular event brought out a
competitive spirit while raising funds for the
Museum’s acquisitions, exhibitions, and art
education programs for at-risk and underserved
youth in Santa Barbara.
Free Family Day
For the 15th year, SBMA honored the Mexican
tradition of Dia de los Muertos with a Free Family
Day on October 26th. Students from over 20
Santa Barbara Schools participated in Museum
in-classroom outreach programs creating artwork
that was displayed in the galleries. Traditional
altars were also created by community groups
working with the Museum including the Jewish
Federation of Greater Santa Barbara, Academy
of Healing Arts, Eastside Library and our own
Ridley-Tree Education Center at McCormick
House. Highlights of this year’s altar display
included the poignant and powerful table of
remembrance created by docents for the Jewish
Federation’s Portraits of Survival program, and
the beautifully rendered tributes to Picasso
made by 4th through 6th grade students from
Aliso, Canalino and Adams Schools. Attended
by over 2,700 visitors and presided over by
Master of Ceremonies and Museum Education
Advisory Committee member, Luis Moreno, this
year’s event was a true community celebration.
As Trustee Ken Anderson enthusiastically wrote,
“What a fabulous day at our Museum!”
Free Family Days are made possible through
the generous support of the Towbes Foundation.
