exhibitions
The Fall season ushers in some wonderful new
exhibitions and experiences at SBMA. Opening
September 19 is Noble Tombs at Mawangdui:
Art and Life in the Changsha Kingdom, China (3rd
Century BCE –1st Century CE). This presentation
offers a rare opportunity to view some very beautiful
and highly significant cultural objects from the tombs
at Mawangdui of the prime minister of the Changsha
Kingdom, the first lady, “Lady Dai”, and their family in
the Western Han Dynasty.
In addition, we continue the celebration of outstanding
artists of our home state with California Calling:
Works from Santa Barbara Collections,1948 –2008
through December 27. Presented in two parts, this
exhibition presents some powerful, postwar works
from the Museum’s holdings and area private
collections that have not graced SBMA’s galleries for
many years, including those by local favorites William
Dole and Channing Peake, and by internationallyrenown
artists Larry Bell, Vija Celmins, Ed Ruscha,
Alexis Smith, and many others.
Finally, on October 24, we will help welcome the
return of the Monarch butterfly to the Central Coast
with the opening of a very special video-art exhibition,
Diana Thater. Based in Southern California, Thater
is internationally recognized for innovative techniques
that have much influenced the genres of video and
installation art. One of the two major works that will
be on view at SBMA is Untitled Videowall (2008),
which stems from her Monarch Butterfly Project.
Noble Tombs at
Mawangdui: Art and Life
in the Changsha
Kingdom, China
(3rd Century BCE –1st
Century CE)
SEPTEMBER 19 - DECEMBER 13, 2009
Originating from the Hunan Provincial Museum and
organized by the China Institute in New York, this
exhibition, traveling to the United Stated for the first
time, highlights one of the most important archaeological
excavations in China – the unearthing at
Mawangdui of the tombs of the first lady and family
of the Changsha Kingdom in the Western Han
dynasty (206 BCE-8 CE). The Santa Barbara
Museum of Art will be the second and only west
coast venue. This exhibition includes nearly 70
treasures, including some of the finest and among
the earliest extant lacquers, silks, paintings, and
books. Through these lavish luxury items and art
works, the exhibition also examines the art and
material culture of the Western Han dynasty, a
formative period of Chinese civilization, focusing
on daily cuisine, cosmetics and fashion, music
and entertainment, healthcare and exercise, and the
fascinating beliefs of the immortal world. The
accompanying exhibition catalogue will be bilingual
and published by the Hunan Provincial Museum.
Noble Tombs at Mawangdui: Art and Life in the Changsha
Kingdom, Third Century BCE to First Century CE is organized by the
China Institute Gallery in collaboration with the Hunan Provincial
Museum, and is curated by Chen Jianming, Director of the Hunan
Provincial Museum.
Diana Thater
OCTOBER 24, 2009 – JANUARY 31, 2010
Internationally renowned pioneer of film and video art,
Diana Thater creates what she describes as “sculpture
with images of nature in space.” Phenomena of
the natural world are recurring motifs for the artist,
whose site-specific video and light installations
explore the relationship between beauty, technology,
and nature and the way it is mediated through
human intervention. Two major works are the focus
of this compelling exhibition, including Untitled
Videowall (2008), which stems from the Monarch
Butterfly Project, the artist’s response to a call by
curators, collectors, and environmentalists to draw
attention to encroachments upon the species’ winter
home in Michoacán, Mexico. The Museum debut of
this work coincides with the arrival of the Monarchs
on the central coast during their annual migration.
Classical Past in Japanese
Woodblock Prints
ONGOING
In Japan, as in the West, classical themes from poetry,
literature, and plays have long provided fodder for
artists. A selection of Japanese woodblock prints
derived from such a canonical repertoire is currently
on view in the Asian Galleries. This exhibition is drawn
exclusively from the Museum’s permanent collection
and is co-organized by UCSB students under the
direction of Tatiana Ginsberg of the Department of the
History of Art and Architecture.
Left to Right, Top to Bottom:
SBMA and VADA, Visual Arts & Design Academy at Santa
Barbara High School, have a long standing partnership.
With the Museum acting as an extension of their classroom,
the students are involved in year-long internships, attend
curriculum related special events several times during the
academic year, and exhibit their studio work at Ridley-Tree
Education Center at McCormick House every spring, some
of which is shown here.
Students in the Museum’s Homework/Artwork After-School
Program participated in an Art Making Circle, a workshop
with musical group String Theory, where students listened
to various pieces of music then drew their interpretation of
what they heard.
Students at Aliso School’s Summer Academy participated in
the Museum’s Summer Mural Project with the guidance of
SBMA Teaching Artist, Susan Griffin. The mural, constructed
and installed onsite at the school, was funded through the
generosity of Astrid and Lawrence Hammett.
Benefactors Circle, Director’s Patrons, and sponsors enjoyed
an evening celebrating the exhibition Brett Weston: Out of the
Shadow. The exhibition was made possible through the generosity
of Eric A. Skipsey, SBMA Museum Collectors Council,
SBMA PhotoFutures, Alice Gillaroo and Susan Jorgensen,
the Museum...
Above: Professor Alfred Moir during the Picasso on Paper
exhibition in September 2008.
Alfred Moir
Professor Alfred Moir has been an invaluable
resource and friend to the Santa Barbara
Museum of Art for nearly 40 years. It is only
fitting that we salute him in light of his recent
retirement and in celebration of his prolific
career as art scholar, educator, and consultant.
Alfred Moir was born in Minneapolis, MN and
at the age of eighteen, began his extensive
academic career. While earning a Ph.D. from
Harvard in art history, Moir received a Fullbright
Scholarship and studied mostly in Italy, focusing
on the art and culture on which he formed his
career. After ten years as a faculty member at
Tulane, Alfred Moir arrived in Santa Barbara
in 1962 as a professor at UCSB. Shortly thereafter,
he was tenured and made chair of the
Department of History of Art and Architecture.
Almost immediately, he began his work with
SBMA, volunteering his time and expertise to
ongoing research in the drawings section of the
permanent collection. In 1975 he completed
the first catalogue of the European drawings in
the Museum’s collection. His first gift of art came
in 1973, and since then he has contributed
68 works, ranging from prints to sculpture to
Roman antiquities. The majority of his gifts have
been European drawings from the 16th to the
20th centuries. Professor Moir still retains
approximately 300 Old Master drawings in his
private collection.
Professor Moir is an eminent scholar in the field
of Baroque Art, especially that of Italy. Among his
important publications are: Caravaggio and His
Followers (1967), Caravaggio and His Copyists
(1977), Caravaggio (1982 and 1989), and Van
Dyke’s Antwerp. In addition to these, through his
love of drawings, he has published and edited
numerous catalogues on drawings collections,
including European Drawings in the Collection
of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art (1976).
He has also organized or has been actively
involved in the creation of ten exhibitions at
SBMA. Among the highlights was the 2001
exhibition Master Drawings from the Collection
of Alfred Moir, which was co-organized by
SBMA and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
In 2006, Professor Moir organized the show,
Behind the Scenes with Drawings:
Renaissance to Rococo, which coincided
with the master painting exhibition Renaissance
to Rococo: Masterpieces from the Collection
of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art.
For decades, Professor Moir dreamt of organizing
a Pablo Picasso exhibition from SBMA’s
permanent collection. In September 2008, that
dream was realized with Picasso on Paper:
Drawings and Prints from the Permanent
Collection (1899 – 1967) which was received
as both a critical and popular success.
The Santa Barbara Museum of Art would like
to take this opportunity to extend our deepest
thanks to Professor Moir for his many years of
scholarship, expertise, and camaraderie.

special thanks to our donors
The Santa Barbara Museum of Art gratefully
acknowledges the generosity of our donors for
their contributions to the Museum between July 1,
2008 and June 30, 2009. Included are the names
of those who made gifts of $2,500 or greater, in
cash or stock, to the Annual Support Fund and
the Museum’s endowment, as well as special gifts
to support exhibitions and art education programs.
Bequests and memberships are incorporated
into the totals. Donors of gifts of art are listed
separately. SBMA expresses its sincere gratitude
and profound appreciation.
If there is an error or an omission, we sincerely
apologize and ask that you bring it to the attention
