<strong>APLD</strong> <strong>Members</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>News</strong> - <strong>2010</strong><br />

In November 2009, Tyler Arboretum, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> oldest arboreta <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States, announced <strong>the</strong> appo<strong>in</strong>tment <strong>of</strong><br />

Shipley A. All<strong>in</strong>son, <strong>APLD</strong>, PCH, to its Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees.<br />

Valerie Easton’s new book, The NEW Low-Ma<strong>in</strong>tenance Garden (Timber Press 2009), features <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> three<br />

members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> DC*MD*VA chapter <strong>of</strong> <strong>APLD</strong>. Jane Berger’s, <strong>APLD</strong>, blog is prom<strong>in</strong>ently mentioned on page 83 <strong>in</strong> “Onl<strong>in</strong>e<br />

Resources,” (<strong>the</strong> only one listed!). Tom Mannion’s, <strong>APLD</strong>, garden for an Arl<strong>in</strong>gton, VA couple (Bedner-Ostrowski,<br />

beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g on page 116 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> book) gets substantial coverage and Tom is quoted frequently on his design philosophy.<br />

And three gardens <strong>of</strong> Melissa Clark, <strong>APLD</strong>, appear <strong>in</strong> photographs throughout <strong>the</strong> book, although only one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m is<br />

accompanied by an explanatory paragraph <strong>of</strong> text (it’s a dry streambed design <strong>in</strong> a Be<strong>the</strong>sda front yard).<br />

Member <strong>of</strong> <strong>APLD</strong> NY and NEW ENGLAND chapters, Anne Warner L<strong>in</strong>ville, Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal <strong>of</strong> Emerg<strong>in</strong>g Growth Landscapes, was<br />

recognized <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> NY Times onl<strong>in</strong>e Document<strong>in</strong>g The Decade. Anne submitted her photograph "Gates Reflected", from<br />

her series <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stallation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Christo and Jeanne Claude Gates <strong>in</strong> Central Park - February 2005, which was accepted<br />

by <strong>the</strong> NY Times and <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> year end, onl<strong>in</strong>e photo documentary <strong>of</strong> readers' photographs <strong>of</strong> events that<br />

recorded memorable and historic moments <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first decade <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 21st century. "The Gates <strong>in</strong> Central Park was both<br />

public space art and landscape design; <strong>the</strong> artwork was placed <strong>in</strong> such a way as to accentuate its sculptural form as well<br />

as to emulate <strong>the</strong> land contours, rock outcropp<strong>in</strong>gs, bridges and pathways <strong>of</strong> Central Park", expla<strong>in</strong>ed Anne. The<br />

Located <strong>in</strong> Toronto, Green Ro<strong>of</strong>s for Healthy Cities (GRHC) is <strong>the</strong> North American trade organization for <strong>the</strong> greenro<strong>of</strong>s<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustry. In 2009, <strong>the</strong>y began a new accreditation program to apply pr<strong>of</strong>essional standards for those <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

greenro<strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry. Cynthia Tanyan, a CA <strong>APLD</strong> member s<strong>in</strong>ce 1997, whose greenro<strong>of</strong> project was seen <strong>in</strong> People<br />

magaz<strong>in</strong>e last year, received certification and GRP (greenro<strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional) designation by successful completion <strong>of</strong> a<br />

comprehensive exam <strong>in</strong> December. Tanyan’s greenro<strong>of</strong> meadow project was featured <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> new book, The American<br />

Meadow Garden, Creat<strong>in</strong>g a Natural Alternative <strong>the</strong> Traditional Lawn, by John Greenlee (p. 164).<br />

(This program is open to anyone <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> advanc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> greenro<strong>of</strong>s. It is comprised <strong>of</strong> four – 8 hr workshops (with<br />

provided study guides) with an exam held once a year <strong>in</strong> select cities across <strong>the</strong> nation. The four workshops and guides go over an<br />

<strong>APLD</strong> member Monique Allen, CLD, MCLP, is <strong>the</strong> CEO & Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal Designer <strong>of</strong> The Garden Cont<strong>in</strong>uum. The Garden<br />

Cont<strong>in</strong>uum received four awards <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fall <strong>of</strong> 2009 for <strong>the</strong>ir work on one residential property and one commercial<br />

property. Both properties showcase <strong>the</strong>ir plant<strong>in</strong>g design as well as some hardscape design, but <strong>the</strong> awards were given<br />

for <strong>the</strong>ir on-go<strong>in</strong>g care <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se planted spaces. Allen believes that design follows <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> long term care <strong>of</strong> plants so<br />

that <strong>the</strong> design vision will mature as <strong>the</strong> plants do. A keen understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> plant growth and management as well as<br />

soil health and stability applied to tend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> garden and <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tended design allows <strong>the</strong> space to evolve and survive<br />

<strong>APLD</strong> Georgia-Carol<strong>in</strong>as Chapter President Susan Gworek, GCLP, and her company, Garden Wonders, Inc., is proud to<br />

announce that her Buchheit Courtyard project has been recognized for its excellence by leaders <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> green <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />

The project received <strong>the</strong> Dist<strong>in</strong>ction Award <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 2009 Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Landscape Awards, presented by <strong>the</strong> Metro Atlanta<br />

Landscape and Turf <strong>Association</strong> (MALTA). This courtyard project won <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> small space landscape <strong>in</strong>stallation<br />

category. The 258 square foot walled courtyard is sandwiched between a town home and a garage. Our firm focused<br />

primarily on foliage and texture to create this relax<strong>in</strong>g sanctuary with an Asian <strong>in</strong>fluence entirely <strong>in</strong> conta<strong>in</strong>ers.<br />

MALTA promotes pr<strong>of</strong>essionalism, adherence to <strong>in</strong>dustry standards and education. The association’s annual Pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

MAGAZINE AWARD!<br />

Andy White, <strong>APLD</strong>, President <strong>of</strong> Wayside Landscape Services, Inc., Asheville, NC, received <strong>the</strong> 2009 Oakland Award at<br />

<strong>the</strong> North Carol<strong>in</strong>a Nursery and Landscape <strong>Association</strong>’s (NCNLA) annual Green and Grow<strong>in</strong>’ convention <strong>in</strong> Greensboro,<br />

NC on January 15, <strong>2010</strong>. This prestigious award has been presented annually s<strong>in</strong>ce 1978 to <strong>in</strong>dividuals <strong>in</strong> recognition <strong>of</strong><br />

a lifetime <strong>of</strong> outstand<strong>in</strong>g contributions and service to <strong>the</strong> landscape <strong>in</strong>dustry. Candidates and w<strong>in</strong>ners are selected by<br />

<strong>the</strong> current and past two presidents <strong>of</strong> NCNLA. Congratulations, Andy!<br />

<strong>APLD</strong> Member Albert V. Short and his team at Harmony Ponds, Inc. have been awarded <strong>the</strong> APSP 2009 Pools & Spas <strong>of</strong><br />

Dist<strong>in</strong>ction Gold Award for a residential water feature <strong>in</strong>stalled at a home <strong>in</strong> Fairfax, VA. The award was presented to<br />

<strong>the</strong> company’s Vice President, Don Jump, <strong>in</strong> Atlantic City, New Jersey, on January 27, <strong>2010</strong>. The w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g pond evokes a<br />

natural woodland sett<strong>in</strong>g, created by excavat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> hillside and carefully emplac<strong>in</strong>g 88 tons <strong>of</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>red Pennsylvania<br />

boulders. Two waterfalls plunge from different areas <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rocks, as if <strong>the</strong>y had come from deep with<strong>in</strong>. The sett<strong>in</strong>g is<br />

enhanced by carefully chosen foliage and trees, such as <strong>the</strong> Japanese maples that gracefully shade <strong>the</strong> rocks. You<br />

approach <strong>the</strong> pond across huge, flat stepp<strong>in</strong>g stones lead<strong>in</strong>g to a stone slab bridge and a cedar deck that is cantilevered<br />

<strong>APLD</strong> member Douglas Owens-Pike was recently asked to draft an article for <strong>the</strong> M<strong>in</strong>nesota Department <strong>of</strong> Natural<br />

Resources Conservation Volunteer magaz<strong>in</strong>e. The article is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir “Trendsetter” series and focuses on susta<strong>in</strong>able<br />

landscape design pr<strong>in</strong>ciples, titled “Eco Yard”. It appeared <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> May-June, <strong>2010</strong> issue and is available on-l<strong>in</strong>e at<br />

A recent project by <strong>APLD</strong> member Jessica Bloom, CPH & Certified Arborist, was highlighted on <strong>the</strong> front page <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>APLD</strong> member Joanne Kostecky <strong>of</strong> Joanne Kostecky Garden Design, Inc. <strong>in</strong> Allentown, PA was recently quoted <strong>in</strong> an<br />

article <strong>in</strong> USAWeekend, <strong>the</strong> magaz<strong>in</strong>e that is <strong>in</strong>serted <strong>in</strong> over 700 Sunday newspapers around <strong>the</strong> country serv<strong>in</strong>g 22.6<br />

million people. The article was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> May 21-23 issue. The article was "Greener Than Grass" and was all about creat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a low-ma<strong>in</strong>tenance, dollar-sav<strong>in</strong>g garden oasis by replac<strong>in</strong>g your lawn.<br />

Deanna Glory, <strong>APLD</strong>, member s<strong>in</strong>ce 1997, currently has a garden art <strong>in</strong>stallation on display at ArtHaus, a museumquality<br />

art gallery <strong>in</strong> San Francisco. Deanna’s <strong>in</strong>stallation entitled Sticks And Stones, A Vertical Garden, is on display <strong>in</strong><br />

association with a series <strong>of</strong> photographs entitled The Backyard, by acclaimed New York artist Chris Schiavo. The entire<br />

exhibit runs through September 25, <strong>2010</strong>.<br />

Susan Morrison, an <strong>APLD</strong> member <strong>in</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>rn California, has an article <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> October issue <strong>of</strong> F<strong>in</strong>e Garden<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Magaz<strong>in</strong>e. "Design Ideas: Break Up a Boxy Backyard" <strong>of</strong>fers design solutions for long, narrow spaces and features<br />

photography by <strong>APLD</strong> member Laura Livengood Schaub.<br />

<strong>APLD</strong> member Peter Brooks was <strong>the</strong> focus <strong>of</strong> a great article called, Where <strong>the</strong> Wild Th<strong>in</strong>gs Grow. The article, which<br />

appeared <strong>in</strong> The Daily Gazette, talks about Peter’s environmentally friendly yard. Read <strong>the</strong> article here.<br />

<strong>APLD</strong> designers, Rebecca Sweet and Susan Cohan, <strong>APLD</strong> have been named as Contribut<strong>in</strong>g Editors for Horticulture<br />

magaz<strong>in</strong>e. Both will be writ<strong>in</strong>g a regular column on garden and landscape design called 'Design Perspectives' <strong>in</strong> 2011.<br />

<strong>APLD</strong> member Kathryn Prideaux was recently selected as one <strong>of</strong> four 'Young Guns' <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> design arena and featured <strong>in</strong><br />

Phoenix Home & Garden magaz<strong>in</strong>e. The recipients were: a tile designer/manufacturer <strong>in</strong> Phoenix, an <strong>in</strong>terior designer <strong>in</strong><br />

Phoenix, an architect <strong>in</strong> Phoenix....and Kathryn...a landscape designer <strong>in</strong> Tucson. What an honor! Kathryn also gave<br />

special mention to <strong>APLD</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> answer to <strong>the</strong> question "who was your mentor?". She stated that all <strong>of</strong> her fellow<br />

members <strong>of</strong> <strong>APLD</strong> are mentors because <strong>the</strong>y have helped her grow and learn <strong>in</strong> this bus<strong>in</strong>ess....which is ALL so true.<br />
