In November 2009, Tyler Arboretum, one of the oldest arboreta in the United States, announced the appointment of
Shipley A. Allinson, APLD, PCH, to its Board of Trustees.
Valerie Easton’s new book, The NEW Low-Maintenance Garden (Timber Press 2009), features the work of three
members of the DC*MD*VA chapter of APLD. Jane Berger’s, APLD, blog is prominently mentioned on page 83 in “Online
Resources,” (the only one listed!). Tom Mannion’s, APLD, garden for an Arlington, VA couple (Bedner-Ostrowski,
beginning on page 116 of the book) gets substantial coverage and Tom is quoted frequently on his design philosophy.
And three gardens of Melissa Clark, APLD, appear in photographs throughout the book, although only one of them is
accompanied by an explanatory paragraph of text (it’s a dry streambed design in a Bethesda front yard).

Member of APLD NY and NEW ENGLAND chapters, Anne Warner Linville, Principal of Emerging Growth Landscapes, was
recognized in the NY Times online Documenting The Decade. Anne submitted her photograph "Gates Reflected", from
her series of the installation of the Christo and Jeanne Claude Gates in Central Park - February 2005, which was accepted
by the NY Times and included in the year end, online photo documentary of readers' photographs of events that
recorded memorable and historic moments of the first decade of the 21st century. "The Gates in Central Park was both
public space art and landscape design; the artwork was placed in such a way as to accentuate its sculptural form as well
as to emulate the land contours, rock outcroppings, bridges and pathways of Central Park", explained Anne. The

Located in Toronto, Green Roofs for Healthy Cities (GRHC) is the North American trade organization for the greenroofs
industry. In 2009, they began a new accreditation program to apply professional standards for those involved in the
greenroof industry. Cynthia Tanyan, a CA APLD member since 1997, whose greenroof project was seen in People
magazine last year, received certification and GRP (greenroof professional) designation by successful completion of a
comprehensive exam in December. Tanyan’s greenroof meadow project was featured in the new book, The American
Meadow Garden, Creating a Natural Alternative the Traditional Lawn, by John Greenlee (p. 164).
(This program is open to anyone interested in advancing in the field of greenroofs. It is comprised of four – 8 hr workshops (with
provided study guides) with an exam held once a year in select cities across the nation. The four workshops and guides go over an
extensive array of topics from benefits, construction, contracts, drainage, waterproofing, plants, and more. For more information:

APLD member Monique Allen, CLD, MCLP, is the CEO & Principal Designer of The Garden Continuum. The Garden
Continuum received four awards in the fall of 2009 for their work on one residential property and one commercial
property. Both properties showcase their planting design as well as some hardscape design, but the awards were given
for their on-going care of these planted spaces. Allen believes that design follows into the long term care of plants so
that the design vision will mature as the plants do. A keen understanding of plant growth and management as well as
soil health and stability applied to tending the garden and the intended design allows the space to evolve and survive

APLD Georgia-Carolinas Chapter President Susan Gworek, GCLP, and her company, Garden Wonders, Inc., is proud to
announce that her Buchheit Courtyard project has been recognized for its excellence by leaders in the green industry.
The project received the Distinction Award in the 2009 Professional Landscape Awards, presented by the Metro Atlanta
Landscape and Turf Association (MALTA). This courtyard project won in the in the small space landscape installation
category. The 258 square foot walled courtyard is sandwiched between a town home and a garage. Our firm focused
primarily on foliage and texture to create this relaxing sanctuary with an Asian influence entirely in containers.
MALTA promotes professionalism, adherence to industry standards and education. The association’s annual Professional

Virginia Hand, a member of the APLD Washington Chapter, recently had her office/studio featured in Pacific Northwest

Landscape Designer’ won two awards at the Northwest Flower and Garden Show. The garden and the team of
wonderful APLDWA garden designers won a GOLD METAL and they also won the SEATTLE HOME AND LIFESTYLE
MAGAZINE AWARD!
Andy White, APLD, President of Wayside Landscape Services, Inc., Asheville, NC, received the 2009 Oakland Award at
the North Carolina Nursery and Landscape Association’s (NCNLA) annual Green and Growin’ convention in Greensboro,
NC on January 15, 2010. This prestigious award has been presented annually since 1978 to individuals in recognition of
a lifetime of outstanding contributions and service to the landscape industry. Candidates and winners are selected by
the current and past two presidents of NCNLA. Congratulations, Andy!
APLD Member Albert V. Short and his team at Harmony Ponds, Inc. have been awarded the APSP 2009 Pools & Spas of
Distinction Gold Award for a residential water feature installed at a home in Fairfax, VA. The award was presented to
the company’s Vice President, Don Jump, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on January 27, 2010. The winning pond evokes a
natural woodland setting, created by excavating the hillside and carefully emplacing 88 tons of weathered Pennsylvania
boulders. Two waterfalls plunge from different areas of the rocks, as if they had come from deep within. The setting is
enhanced by carefully chosen foliage and trees, such as the Japanese maples that gracefully shade the rocks. You
approach the pond across huge, flat stepping stones leading to a stone slab bridge and a cedar deck that is cantilevered

APLD member Douglas Owens-Pike was recently asked to draft an article for the Minnesota Department of Natural
Resources Conservation Volunteer magazine. The article is in their “Trendsetter” series and focuses on sustainable
landscape design principles, titled “Eco Yard”. It appeared in the May-June, 2010 issue and is available on-line at

A recent project by APLD member Jessica Bloom, CPH & Certified Arborist, was highlighted on the front page of the
Memorial Day paper in Snohomish County, WA. Click here to check out the article. Jessica was also mentioned in

Congratulations are in order! A project by Reuben Huffman, APLD, and the team at Fullmer’s Landscaping, Inc. was just

APLD member Joanne Kostecky of Joanne Kostecky Garden Design, Inc. in Allentown, PA was recently quoted in an
article in USAWeekend, the magazine that is inserted in over 700 Sunday newspapers around the country serving 22.6
million people. The article was in the May 21-23 issue. The article was "Greener Than Grass" and was all about creating
a low-maintenance, dollar-saving garden oasis by replacing your lawn.
Deanna Glory, APLD, member since 1997, currently has a garden art installation on display at ArtHaus, a museumquality
art gallery in San Francisco. Deanna’s installation entitled Sticks And Stones, A Vertical Garden, is on display in
association with a series of photographs entitled The Backyard, by acclaimed New York artist Chris Schiavo. The entire
exhibit runs through September 25, 2010.
Susan Morrison, an APLD member in Northern California, has an article in the October issue of Fine Gardening
Magazine. "Design Ideas: Break Up a Boxy Backyard" offers design solutions for long, narrow spaces and features
photography by APLD member Laura Livengood Schaub.

APLD member Carrie Dubberley got the chance to be a guest columnist for her local paper in Dallas, Texas. Her article

APLD member Peter Brooks was the focus of a great article called, Where the Wild Things Grow. The article, which

APLD designers, Rebecca Sweet and Susan Cohan, APLD have been named as Contributing Editors for Horticulture
magazine. Both will be writing a regular column on garden and landscape design called 'Design Perspectives' in 2011.
APLD member Kathryn Prideaux was recently selected as one of four 'Young Guns' in the design arena and featured in
Phoenix Home & Garden magazine. The recipients were: a tile designer/manufacturer in Phoenix, an interior designer in
Phoenix, an architect in Phoenix....and Kathryn...a landscape designer in Tucson. What an honor! Kathryn also gave
special mention to APLD in the answer to the question "who was your mentor?". She stated that all of her fellow
members of APLD are mentors because they have helped her grow and learn in this business....which is ALL so true.
