APLD member Monique Allen, CLD, MCLP, is the CEO & Principal Designer of The Garden Continuum. The Garden
Continuum received four awards in the fall of 2009 for their work on one residential property and one commercial
property. Both properties showcase their planting design as well as some hardscape design, but the awards were given
for their on-going care of these planted spaces. Allen believes that design follows into the long term care of plants so
that the design vision will mature as the plants do. A keen understanding of plant growth and management as well as
soil health and stability applied to tending the garden and the intended design allows the space to evolve and survive

APLD Georgia-Carolinas Chapter President Susan Gworek, GCLP, and her company, Garden Wonders, Inc., is proud to
announce that her Buchheit Courtyard project has been recognized for its excellence by leaders in the green industry.
The project received the Distinction Award in the 2009 Professional Landscape Awards, presented by the Metro Atlanta
Landscape and Turf Association (MALTA). This courtyard project won in the in the small space landscape installation
category. The 258 square foot walled courtyard is sandwiched between a town home and a garage. Our firm focused
primarily on foliage and texture to create this relaxing sanctuary with an Asian influence entirely in containers.
MALTA promotes professionalism, adherence to industry standards and education. The association’s annual Professional

Virginia Hand, a member of the APLD Washington Chapter, recently had her office/studio featured in Pacific Northwest

Landscape Designer’ won two awards at the Northwest Flower and Garden Show. The garden and the team of
wonderful APLDWA garden designers won a GOLD METAL and they also won the SEATTLE HOME AND LIFESTYLE
MAGAZINE AWARD!
Andy White, APLD, President of Wayside Landscape Services, Inc., Asheville, NC, received the 2009 Oakland Award at
the North Carolina Nursery and Landscape Association’s (NCNLA) annual Green and Growin’ convention in Greensboro,
NC on January 15, 2010. This prestigious award has been presented annually since 1978 to individuals in recognition of
a lifetime of outstanding contributions and service to the landscape industry. Candidates and winners are selected by
the current and past two presidents of NCNLA. Congratulations, Andy!
APLD Member Albert V. Short and his team at Harmony Ponds, Inc. have been awarded the APSP 2009 Pools & Spas of
Distinction Gold Award for a residential water feature installed at a home in Fairfax, VA. The award was presented to
the company’s Vice President, Don Jump, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on January 27, 2010. The winning pond evokes a
natural woodland setting, created by excavating the hillside and carefully emplacing 88 tons of weathered Pennsylvania
boulders. Two waterfalls plunge from different areas of the rocks, as if they had come from deep within. The setting is
enhanced by carefully chosen foliage and trees, such as the Japanese maples that gracefully shade the rocks. You
approach the pond across huge, flat stepping stones leading to a stone slab bridge and a cedar deck that is cantilevered
