President's
Message
Timothy N. Thoelecke, Jr., APLD
Goals. We all have goals. Some
personal, some professional, and some
others. Some are long-term and some
are shorter. All goals, however, should
be part of a long-term vision with each
goal being a step along the way.
When I stepped into the president's
role, there were a number of things I
wanted to accomplish before leaving the
office. All of them are geared toward
making APLD function better. Many of
these items are behind the scenes, but
the most important change is the most
visible. That is the recent change of
management.
APLD has retained the services of
Association Management Systems, of
Naperville Illinois, to manage the day-
to-day business functions of the
organization. For those of you who do
not know, a management company
manages multiple organizations. Our
APLD executive staff are employees of
AMS and have at their disposal, the
resources of a large company. As a
result, APLD has access to services
including an in-house CPA, technology
experts, clerical help, and other
executive staff with whom to consult.
With pooled resources, APLD's costs
are kept to a minimum. It is a great
arrangement for everyone involved, and
we look forward to many years with
AMS.
I might also add that the summer
conference in Washington, DC would
not have been as successful without the
efforts of a number of volunteers,
especially Deanna Pillarelli, APLD, and
John Sonnier, APLD. Special thanks
are also due to Samuel Salsbury and
Sabrena Schweyer for their
contributions. Of course, those who
attended all know the herculean efforts
on the part of APLD staff to pull it all
together.
Back on the theme of goals, other
goals, more behind the scenes, center on
making APLD run more like a business.
For instance putting in place
procedures, calendars, and so on, to
ensure a level of consistency is
maintained year to year. Also, our
bylaws were updated in March, in San
Francisco, to put the framework in
place for major steps forward for APLD
down the road, including chapters and
new categories of membership.
Improvements to look for in the
remaining months of 1999 include, the
"new look" of the newsletter, a move
of our web page from apld.com to the
more appropriate apld.org, and our
winter meeting in Columbus Ohio from
January 22-26, and the 2000 summer
meeting in Toronto.
