Former Elmwood Fire Station Was Shuttered in 1973
Miner: Bringing This Historic Building Back to Life is an
Accomplishment
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – On October 11, 2012 Syracuse Mayor Stephanie A. Miner will open the
Onondaga Park Firebarn. This long anticipated project will be celebrated with an opening
reception at the facility. At the reception, representatives from the Onondaga Park Association
will present Mayor Miner and Baye Muhammad, Commissioner of Parks, Recreation, and Youth
Programs with a check for $25,000 as a gift towards supplying the facility with equipment. The
reception begins at 6:00 PM with a speaking program at 6:30 PM.
“I am excited to open this newly renovated city facility and bring it back to life for the
Strathmore community,” said Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner. “Bringing this historic building
back to life is an accomplishment I am proud of. I thank our Parks and Recreation staff under the
leadership of Commissioner Muhammad and our dedicated partners in the community who were
able to make this happen.”
The newly renovated facility will house additional offices of the Department of Parks and
Recreation and regularly host meetings of the Greater Strathmore Neighborhood Association and
the Onondaga Park Association. The State University of New York College of Environmental

Science and Forestry has developed a graduate research center which will be run out of the
facility.
The Onondaga Park Firebarn was built in the craftsman style to complement neighborhood
houses, the facility was known as Fire Station 21. It originally had horse-drawn firefighting
equipment. The facility was taken out of use in 1973 as part of a reconfiguration of the Syracuse
Fire Department.
“This facility will be a strong asset in the portfolio of the Parks Department,” said Baye
Muhammad, Commissioner of Parks, Recreation, and Youth Programs. “We are glad to see this
building has been renovated and completed can now be put back into use for the community.”
