Our Mission: Leading Lifetime Learning
National Teacher Appreciation Week is May 6-10!
Celebration and Recognition
April 26, 2013
My daughter plays high school softball and due to this unusual
spring weather, fifteen games have been cancelled or postponed. It
is hard to believe we still have snow on the ground and next week
is May. We can guarantee this, warmer weather is coming!
TBAISD lost a dedicated servant and long time friend this past week.
Harry Voice served as one of our Board members for 52 years, dating
back before the days we were known as an intermediate school district.
Harry was passionate about our region, the services we provide, and
student success. He will be greatly missed. Harry was 81 years old and is
survived by his wife Marie, two sons, and several grandchildren and great
grandchildren.
The prestigious MEA Outstanding Person in Education (OPIE) awards
ceremony will take place on Thursday, May 2, at the Traverse City Park
Place Dome. This year Sally Witkop and Chris Korbel are being recognized
by TBAISD members. Sally and Chris exemplify the kind of educators we
have at TBAISD. Both are passionate about student achievement and are
extremely dedicated to this organization. I warmly congratulate these two
outstanding educators!
Governor Snyder recently hosted the annual forum on education in
Lansing. While I was not able to attend, I did follow the day's events during
my nightly reading and was concerned to hear the Governor feels the
educational system in Michigan is failing. I am extremely passionate about
what we do for young people, our region and Michigan. His comments
centered on creating more career opportunities and experiences for students.
I believe TBAISD leads the state in this area, across all departments, and we
sent information to the Governor highlighting the depth of our programs. In
speaking with the Governor's office on Wednesday, to discuss the successful
programs we have developed, I was asked to attend the Governor's speech
to the Traverse City Economic Club on Friday (today). The Governor is very
interested in robotics and was told our TBAISD Manufacturing Technology
Academy's FIRST Robotics (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science
and Technology) team exemplifies teaching and learning in the new
global economy. The Governor receives a small honorarium for speaking
engagements and donates the funds to charity. For this event, he will
make the donation to our CTC Manufacturing Technology Academy FIRST
Robotics team! This is a tribute to TBAISD and our entire region!
The month of May is upon us. We near the end of another successful
school year. In the next two weeks, we will determine the official last day of
school for TBAISD after experiencing 10.5 snow days this year. We await
pending legislation on the issue and need to observe what our local school
districts decide. Please enjoy the month and the many
celebrations that go along with it. As always, thank you
for your dedication to our students, organization, and the
Traverse Bay region.
Reflect Over the Years
We are fortunate to have such a dedicated staff,
reaching out to our community in so many different
ways. On Tuesday, May 14, we honor those
individuals who are concluding this chapter of their
lives with a combined 247 years of service! We
also recognize over 64 others that continue to lead
our region to great heights in education through
their continued service. Join in this celebration; mix
with your colleagues, shake hands with those you
admire, take this moment to hear what others have
accomplished, and reflect upon the past, present
and future of the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate
School District. Make your reservation with Renee
Eat Your Way to Better Skin
Excerpt from Prevention Magazine, November 2012
Enjoy these three easy food fixes and you’ll have
your most beautiful complexion ever.
Power up with probiotics
The best way is to take a probiotic supplement
(available at most health food stores) or consume
fermented foods such as kefir, yogurt, buttermilk,
miso, kimchi, and sauerkraut.
Sprinkle on super seeds
The healthy fats known as omega-3s are like
manna from heaven. They are anti-inflammatory and
moisturize the skin. Salmon, sardines, and mackerel
are omega-3 powerhouses. For those who prefer
not to eat fish, flaxseed, and chia seeds offer great
alternatives.
Pick up Purple produce
One of the best ways to neutralize free radicals,
molecules w/unpaired electrons, is eating foods that
pack an antioxidant punch such as berries, beans
and leafy greens. Purple potatoes, purple cabbage,
purple cauliflower, raspberries and blueberries are
all rich in anthocyanins that also helps improve
circulation to form new cells, collagen, and elasatin.
The Inside Story
Shawn Heath
Technology Services
Technician
Many of us fondly (or not)
remember childhood years
of musical instruction and
countless hours of practice.
And yet, when asked to
play something, a shoddy
version of chopsticks is our
crowning glory. And then there’s Shawn Heath. He
thumbed his nose at formal lessons and taught himself
to play the guitar at the age of 17 with only the help
of a how-to magazine. He’s right up there with Jimi
Hendrix and David Bowie who were self-taught too.
Shawn keeps a slightly lower profile than his musical
peers, though.
By day, Shawn is a tech maestro in the TBAISD
Technology Services department. But in his free time
he switches from computer
wizard to guitar genius.
Weekends are when he
dusts off the old Fender®
Stratocaster and plays with
his jazz group, Hot Club
Trio at weddings, parties
and other special events.
The band is a preferred
vendor at Castle Farms in
Charlevoix, which means
that come summertime
Shawn is one busy guy.
In his younger years,
he was a member of
three different rock bands
including one named The Manager’s Club in honor
of its members all serving as Hungry Howie’s Pizza
store managers in the Alpena area… I’d like to place
an order for a large pepperoni and mushroom pizza
with a side order of rock-and-roll, please. While
flavored crust pizza fueled his talent, Shawn also drew
inspiration from his favorite performers Led Zeppelin,
Soundgarden, and Tom Petty.
As they say, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
Shawn’s 12-year-old daughter is now learning from
her dad’s musical talent and enthusiasm. She plays
clarinet in her middle school band and was recently
awarded a scholarship to attend the acclaimed Blue
Lake Fine Arts Camp in western Michigan. TBAISD is
fortunate to have an employee with Shawn’s technical
skills along with his flair for entertaining.
Supporting Regional Implementation of
Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)
This school year the TBAISD MTSS implementation
team worked to create an implementation plan that
supports Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)
implementation at the district level within our
region. MTSS is an integrated, multi-tiered system of
instruction, assessment, and intervention designed
to meet the achievement and behavioral needs of
all learners (MDE, 2011). In a Multi-tiered System
of Support, three tiers of instruction are typically
implemented to address the needs of
the student population in the areas of
academics and behavior. This threetiered
approach allows for delivery of
high-quality, consistent curriculum to all
students and ensures early intervention
for those who are behind.
The TBAISD MTSS team developed
a regional plan to support district
level MTSS implementation across
our region. Marianne Swank, TBAISD
MTSS facilitator, is charged with
operationalizing the plan and structures that need
to be in place for successful implementation. The
implementation team includes: Marianne Swank, Leigh
Kennedy, Dave Clark, Jennifer Morgenstern, Kate Arvo,
Paul Bauer, Tina Frollo, Carrie VanLandschoot and
Amy Branco. The MTSS implementation support plan
includes goals for supporting MTSS implementation
efforts, development of internal (TBAISD) capacity,
development of external LEA capacity, determining
district readiness, selection of district(s), and
differentiating building supports.
The Implementation Science (NIRN) shows it
takes 3-5 years for large-scale rollout focusing on
organizational structures, leadership, training, and
coaching. There are 3 stages of implementation:
• Should we do it? (Explore/installation)
• Work to do it right! (Initial/Full Implementation)
• Work do to it better!’ (Innovation/Sustainability)
It is our goal that 82% of TBAISD Districts will
implement MTSS within these three stages by 2017.
MTSS is an integrated,
multi-tiered system of
instruction, assessment,
and intervention
designed to meet
the achievement and
behavioral needs of all
learners (MDE, 2011).
Internally, we are providing coaching and MTSS
professional development to support initial district
implementation.
As we plan for partnering with districts, those that
have already been a part of MiBLSi may have many
of the resources & components in place within their
MiBLSi building, potentially considering district level
MTSS implementation. In addition to MiBLSi districts,
those that have no experience with MiBLSi, but have
worked collaboratively with TBAISD
around their School Improvement Plan
(SIP) process, may be approached to
determine how MTSS implementation
may support their SIP goals. For all
districts, data will be collected through
School Process Rubric 40 (SPR 40).
Particular consideration will be given to
the following SPR 40 key indicators:
• Leadership
• Data
• Information management
• Professional learning
This spring, TBAISD cabinet members and the
MTSS facilitator will meet with leaders of prospective
partnering districts to determine MTSS need, fit with
current initiatives, resources, readiness, and capacity
to implement. As we look forward, districts partnering
for MTSS implementation will have a district-level
MTSS implementation team that will attend regional
MTSS professional development and receive coaching
support, creating district rollout plans targeted to
support their SIP and student needs.
The MTSS implementation team is dedicated
to supporting regional MTSS implementation and
sustainability practices for ours own organization, as
well as for the LEAs we serve. If you have questions or
would like further information, please contact
Let’s all do the
Barbecue!
The NMC BBQ has been a community tradition
since 1951 and continues to draw families and friends
from the region to explore the NMC campus, enjoy
live entertainment, childrens’ activities, classroom
displays and the famous juicy buffalo burger meal.
JOIN THE FUN Sunday, May 19, between 11 a.m. and
5 p.m.
Order your BBQ tickets TODAY by contacting
online at www.nmc.edu/bbq. Advance ticket price is
$6 per person. Tickets increase to $8 the day of the
event. Proceeds of the BBQ go toward special NMC
projects that enhance the learning environment for
NMC students. SEE YOU AT THE BBQ!
