From The Alumni Director...
This edition of Alumni News is dedicated to supporting the fund
raising efforts of St. Pius X. Because of the generosity of Alumni
and their families, St. Pius X has been able to develop and sustain
excellence in all of its programs and is recognized as a top school in
the state of Georgia. Catholic schools can educate the whole person,
mind, body, and spirit and therein lies its strength.
If you have never been a financial supporter of St Pius X I hope
you will prayerfully consider joining the hundreds who lend their
support. There are many avenues to lend your help and align your
gifts toward supporting your interests. The development office is
ready and available to provide you with more information and to
discuss where your gifts might be best directed. As a prospective
donor, one of the best ways to familiarize yourself with the operations
of the school is to read the Annual Report. The other source of
information is the website, where you can find more about scholarships
and the capital campaign.
Six Ways to Support St. Pius X
• Annual Fund—funds the current budget of the school
and is used for financial aid, extraordinary expenses,
and teacher support. These funds are vital to the yearly
operations of the school.
• Scholarship Endowment—there are 44 scholarship
funds at St Pius X. Each has a unique criteria
that may align with your interests or desire to honor
someone.
• Restricted Gifts—gifts can be
directed to a particular program
for a current or future need.
• In Kind Gifts—Certain goods
and services can be given to
the school for use in programs
or as gifts and prizes as part of
promotions.
• Capital Campaign—the 50th
Campaign is purchasing adjacent
land for future development of the campus.
• Planned Giving—you may remember St. Pius in
your will.
Each one of these channels is a pathway to educate a St. Pius X student.
Every gift helps to develop the leaders of the next generation.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Vicky Dorsey ’81, Director of Alumni
From The Alumni Association President...
Hello Friends,
I’m filled with Lion Pride after another fall
season in which our student athletes, band,
cheerleaders, dance team, coaches, parents
and volunteers have once again exceeded
goals and represented us well! This is a
wonderful time to be associated with St.
Pius X High School. Few days pass that
someone from outside of our school community
doesn’t inquire about “PiHi,” and
each time I brim with enthusiasm when
telling of the exciting events on our agenda.
Among other activities, The Alumni Association sponsors two big
events each year: Homecoming- Alumni Cookout and Spring Alumni
Classic. We’re very proud of these outings which would not be
possible without support from the school. We recognize that it’s
your continued contributions to fund raisers like the Annual Fund
that allow us to keep moving forward.
We found a better way to serve you by launching the Alumni Web
site. It’s a dynamic tool with tons of potential to put former classmates,
teachers and friends at each others fingertips. This too is a
manifestation of what St. Pius X can do for the alumni base as we
make sacrifices for the school.
It’s such a joy seeing old friends and meeting other alums for the first
time. We are actively seeking new and exciting ways to increase the
scope of what the association is able to do. You can help make this
possible. Please fill out and return those envelopes and accept those
calls requesting your contributions. You’ll smile even brighter the
next time you’re out telling stories of your days at “PiHi.”
Thanks, and God bless you.
Campus News
A Simple Spaghetti Dinner
A NIGHT WE WILL NEVER FORGET
The Gilberts are a popular St. Pius X family.
Bob is a teacher and coach, as is his brother,
JT. Bob’s wife Margaret is one of our swim
coaches, and Katie, one of their four daughters,
is a St. Pius freshman.
Twenty months ago, the family learned that
Margaret had cancer. Since then, she has
undergone a series of treatments. In battling
the disease, the family established two primary
goals--to eliminate the disease and to keep
their family life as normal as possible. In order
to achieve these goals it became obvious to
the Gilberts that they would have to open their
arms and let those who love them, help them.
Ironically, by allowing the SPX community
to help them, the Gilberts actually helped us
more than they could ever know.
Recent tests revealed that Margaret’s cancer
had spread. There was a need for spiritual,
physical, and financial support. To that end,
the SPX parent groups gathered and devised a
plan to help. The Home and School Association,
the St. Pius X Arts Society (SPAS), the
Athletic Association, and the Mothers’ Club
decided to jointly sponsor a spaghetti dinner
prior to the homecoming football game.
The night started two weeks before the first
plate was served. The four parent organizations
divided all the responsibilities, and
everything came together from there. The
activity in getting ready for the event was off
the charts. Chartwells, our school cafeteria
company, agreed to donate all of the plates,
napkins, knives, forks, etc. Wendy’s, Galla’s
Pizza, CiCi’s Pizza, and the Blue Ribbon
Grill donated all of the salad, salad dressing,
croutons, spaghetti, sauce and Parmesan
cheese. To put that in perspective, imagine
80 pounds of beef, 100 pounds of spaghetti,
enough lettuce to feed all of the nation’s Easter
bunnies, 84 pounds of Parmesan cheese, and
50 gallons of sauce in your refrigerator! All
the ingredients for a great spaghetti dinner
were in the house!
The dinner took place on October 13, and
preparation started early as families dropped
off desserts while dropping off their children.
At noon, the master chefs Chuck McDowell
and Steve Lane arrived. At 3:00 p.m.,
somewhere between 100 and 7,000 mothers
swarmed the cafeteria to set up and decorate.
What they did was amazing! As the ticket
and money parents arrived, there were suddenly
signs, tables, and chairs everywhere.
The organization and attention to detail was
beyond belief. We were ready, but I don’t
think anything had really prepared us for
what took place in the next several hours.
The night transcended the food, the decorations,
the cleanup and the money that was
raised. The night became the embodiment of
this school’s mission. It elevated us all and
brought us together as one family.
We ended up feeding 1,500 people. Over 200
people actively participated as volunteers in
one form or another. We raised $45,000 for
the Gilbert family.
Far more than raising money or meeting goals,
however, was the fact that we were able to, in a
small way, help one of our “family” members
who was in need. I have been at St. Pius X
for 33 years. In my opinion, this was one of
the school’s finest moments. The feeling in
that room was indescribable, and the smile
on Margaret’s face made the night a success
whether or not we raised one penny.
It was a “special” evening. Our community’s
passion, compassion, energy, thoughtfulness,
and old fashioned work, made it such. In
this instance, we were truly living our motto
“Domini Sumus”—“We are the Lord’s.”
Mark Kelly ’70
Career Forum 2008
The first annual St. Pius X Career Forum was a great success! Thirty-one speakers, most of whom were SPX alumni, spent their morning
talking to groups of seniors who had expressed interest in their career fields. Doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs, and interior designers were
just a few of the areas represented. Before the presentations, the speakers were guests at a reception in the cafeteria, and they enjoyed seeing
some of their former teachers. Two speakers even went to Father Lopez for a blessing before their presentations! Feedback from speakers
and students was overwhelmingly positive, and we’re hoping to expand the program for the 2009-2010 school year.
50th Anniversary Capital Campaign
Expanding the Campus
Many of you have noticed the removal of the Michelle’s Court
apartment complex located adjacent to St. Pius X, just north of
our campus. Due to our growing needs, we have seized a oncein-a-lifetime
opportunity to redefine and expand our campus,
and we are excited to report that this land is now a part of our
school. This past October, St. Pius X signed closing documents
on the acquisition of the Michelle’s Court property. With this
addition, we hope to shape the future of our school community
as we begin the next 50 years.
This land expands the footprint of St. Pius X by 7.38 acres, giving
us approximately 25 percent more land with which to improve
the functionality of our campus. Since October, Meredith
Environmental Company, owned by St. Pius X alumnus John
Meredith ’81, has been working on removal of the buildings. As
of the release of this publication, the demolition of the existing
structures has been completed.
This expansion of our campus is the legacy of a generous and hard-working group of St. Pius X benefactors who formed a partnership
in 2006 to buy the property. Shortly after these friends of St. Pius X initiated this plan, The 50th Anniversary Capital Campaign was
formed. Since then, this capital campaign has been in its silent phase, and we have been meeting quietly with potential benefactors of
St. Pius X. We are proud to announce that $2.2 million has been pledged towards this $6.8 million project. The campaign is moving
to the public phase in the early spring of 2009.
4
The addition of this tract of land has triggered the development
of a revised Campus Master Plan, in which St. Pius
X looks ahead to meeting the facility needs of the school
over the next 20 years. Faculty and administration have
worked in conjunction with an architect to assess current and
emerging program needs for all school activities. Special
attention has been paid to the most cost effective and least
disruptive improvements to the campus. The general campus
concerns that were examined include parking, traffic flow,
security, energy efficiency, and landscaping.
The 50th Anniversary Capital Campaign will kick off to
the parent community on February 26 and March 3. The
alumni campaign will commence in the fall. The campaign
committee will be announcing the specifics of the campaign
in the next few weeks. Thank you for your continued support
of our wonderful school. We hope you will join us to
help kick off this next great venture.

HOMECOMING:
Reunion Weekend
Homecoming weekend was enjoyed by all who came out. The weekend began with a great BBQ, catered by Pig & Chick, and the football game
Friday night. The Golden Lions beat up opponent North Atlanta. The Classes of ’63, ’68, ’73, ’78, ’83, ’88, ’93, ’98, and ’03 each gathered for
events around town on Saturday night. To wrap up the festivities, all alumni were invited back to campus on Sunday for Mass and tours of the
school. It was a memorable weekend!

Planning for Our Future:
Planned Giving
What is “Planned Giving,” and why is it important to St. Pius X?
As the cost of providing quality Catholic education continues to rise, the need for funds derived from planned giving becomes
more important. Your commitment to St. Pius X during your lifetime will enable this school to plan now for future
needs, while insuring excellent education for generations to come.
Planned gifts enable St. Pius X High School to plan its programs, activities, curriculum and physical plant into the future
while keeping tuition as low as reasonably possible. Planned gifts allow you to make a statement of support that will become
your lasting legacy.
What are planned gifts?
Planned gifts include provisions for St. Pius X in wills and life insurance policies and other types of gifts which allow donors to
retain the use of, or income from, their gifts for a specified time—usually the donor’s lifetime. Any planned gift allows you to
qualify for membership in the Chi-Rho Society—and these planned gifts may also provide you and your heirs with significant
income tax and/or estate tax deductions. There is no minimum dollar amount required for membership. The important thing
is for all alumni, parents, and friends who care about St. Pius X to do something tangible to secure our school’s future.
Three steps to begin Planned Giving to St. Pius X.
1. Assessment of your personal legacy. Ask yourself the following questions? What is going to be your mark on the
world? Are you interested in furthering causes dear to you for the next generation? If so how do I want to leave a legacy?
Is my estate an appropriate vehicle to further my intentions? The answer to all these questions comes from reflection and
prayer. Once you have discerned a desire to include St. Pius X in your will, you can move to the implementation stage.
The practical aspects begin with an estate plan. If you are like the majority of people you have not begun or completed an
estate plan. Those who have gone through this process may have a professional plan, but others will have a few sheets of
notes. But the most important part of this process is to reflect on your desire to do good
by thinking ahead. In this process you evaluate the needs of your family and the
impact of taxes on the value of your assets. You may find you may accomplish all
of your goals in a simple plan. It is also important in this complex and dynamic
economy to stay informed or to hire someone to keep you informed of the legal
environment. A thorough review of your family finances will determine
your ability to fund your favorite causes.
2. Assessment of Institutions. After you have decided that you are interested
in making an estate gift, the next part becomes intriguing. What
institutions reflect your values and make an impact? What institutions are
good stewards of your hard earned estate? When considering St. Pius X
as a beneficiary we recommend that you read and familiarize yourself with
the annual report. Compare the finances with other institutions you may be
interested in and determine where your money may have the most impact.
Ask questions about current and future projects. We believe you will find that
you will be able to create a tangible result by supporting a high school student.
Many other worthy causes are simply too large and complex for your donation to have
much impact. At St. Pius X, your donation goes to work quickly and with high impact.
3. Application of intentions to actionable items. What financial vehicles are going to be able to match your
goals? Are you a candidate to establish a charitable trust? What is the tax status of your estate? A thoughtful
plan will incorporate your charitable intentions into your estate and create a legacy that your family can
be proud of for generations to come. Good estate planning has provisions for review at regular intervals and
when circumstances arise. There are several philosophical directions for donors to consider. Do you wish to
6

establish a permanent fund in the endowment or do you want your donation to be used for capital projects? In this process
of deciding where to direct a gift, donors are best served by keeping current with the financial operation of the school by
reading the annual report and by meeting with the Development Office to become informed about current projects or needs
that the school many have.
Examples of Planned Gifts
Bequest
A bequest is a gift to St. Pius X by will. This is a simple and popular method for remembering the school in perpetuity. You
may specify that St. Pius X is to receive a certain dollar amount, a specific percentage of the estate, or a certain asset. If
you already have a valid, up-to-date will, your attorney can add St. Pius X as a beneficiary through a simple amendment
to your will called a codicil. Bequests of all sizes are encouraged. Please use the following wording when naming St. Pius
X Catholic High School in your will: “...Archbishop John Donoghue and his successors for the exclusive use of St. Pius X
Catholic High School, Archdiocese of Atlanta.”
Life Insurance
Life insurance is another way to make a planned gift to St. Pius X. You can purchase a new life insurance policy or contribute
all or part of a current policy which you currently own, but no longer need. When St. Pius X is named as the owner and
beneficiary of a policy, your annual premium payments will be tax deductible. If you give an existing policy, you are generally
able to deduct an amount approximately equal to the current cash value of the policy. The bottom line is that for a few hundred
dollars of premiums a year, you can provide for a $25,000, $50,000 or $100,000 future endowment for St. Pius X.
Charitable Gift Annuity
A charitable gift annuity provides you with fixed income for life in exchange for your charitable gift to St. Pius X. If you are at
least 40 years of age, a gift of $5,000 or more in cash, stock, or other liquid assets can be used to fund a gift annuity. The
rates of return from St. Pius X’s charitable gift annuity are generally higher than those available from CD’s and passbook
savings accounts depending upon your age at the time of your gift. The older you are, the higher the rate of return. Your income
payments are distributed to you on a quarterly or other periodic basis. You can start receiving the income immediately
or defer it until you retire. Through a charitable gift annuity you can: (1) receive fixed, regular payments; (2) increase your
income; (3) take an immediate tax deduction; (4) save taxes on future income; and (5) avoid some capital gains taxes.
Charitable Remainder Trust
The “unitrust” and “annuity trust” generally work like this: you and your attorney create an irrevocable trust agreement,
naming a bank or the Archdiocese to serve as trustee. You transfer cash, securities, or other property (generally valued
at $100,000 or more) to the trustee. The trustee pays income to you and/or your other designated beneficiaries for life.
Thereafter, the trust is distributed to St. Pius X for the particular purpose you originally specified. The income and estate tax
advantages can be significant, and may include the avoidance of capital gains taxes. This trust is an especially good vehicle
for those who own stock with a low cost basis.
Charitable Lead Trust
The charitable lead trust is a good vehicle for providing income to St. Pius X for a set number of years, with the assets in
the trust ultimately passing on to your children or grandchildren. Primarily created by those in the higher estate tax brackets,
the trust can pass its assets on to younger generations with little or no estate or gift tax
payable.
Become a Member of the Chi-Rho Society
To become a member of the Chi-Rho Society, simply inform the Development Office in writing
that you have named St. Pius X Catholic High School as a beneficiary in your financial
or estate plans. Gifts of all types and sizes, large and small, are encouraged.
Those members who have given their permission for us to list their names will be recognized
in the St. Pius X Annual Report, thereby allowing other members of the St. Pius X
community to acknowledge their support and perhaps to encourage others to follow.
For More Information
Like other financial decisions, a planned gift must be chosen and shaped with care. St. Pius
X welcomes the opportunity to discuss ways to include the school in your financial and estate
plans. Call David Buechner, Director of Development, St. Pius X Development Office,
404-633-4290, x273 or e-mail at development@spx.org for additional information.
Alumni Back on Campus
Wednesday Night Lights
Class of 2006 Takes 1st Alumni Flag Football Tournament Win
On a cold night in November nearly one hundred alumni braved the elements to
relive some football glory days under the lights at George B. Maloof Stadium.
The evening was a huge success! By 6:00 p.m. teams representing the classes
of 2003-2008 were stretched, warmed up, and ready to kick-off. Three rounds
of games were played as temperatures steadily dropped. Into the second hour
of play, older alums (’80’s – 2002) arrived to play and the ladies showed up to
“play with the guys.” Coach Standard and Coach Gilbert leant their support
and encouragement. Coach Schmitt called the play action from the press box.
Parents, siblings, classmates, and spouses cheered on the players. Current St.
Pius X players Cole Moon and Joey Gargiulo even leant their assistance. In
the end, the night belonged to the Class of 2006. After decisive wins in earlier
rounds, they faced off against the Class of 2003 in the championship round.
Many thanks go to Blaise Wannamaker ’04 and Lisette Buechner ’04 for organizing
and executing an excellent event that was enjoyed by alumni young
and old. Mark your calendars for the night before Thanksgiving 2009. Plans
are already underway for the class of 2006 to defend their title!
Lights, Camera,
Action!
Happy New Year to all Pius Player alumni! Thanks so much for
the lovely holiday cards and photos of your children. How beautiful
they all are! Am I really that old?
How about the homecoming 2008 “Children of the ’90s” photo to
the right of Jennifer Bafundo ’00, Kristin Kramer ’98, and Alison
Bruckert ’01? They’re all teaching here at St. Pius X, and they still
look like they are seniors in Pius Players. What fun!
Coming Soon:
If you have little ones, plan on attending our children’s musicals
on Saturday, February 14, at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. We will be
performing Return to Oz and Monsters, the Beast Things in Life.
Tickets are $8. Each performance time will feature both 30-minute
shows with an intermission in between. Children will love it!
Our blockbuster show, Les Misérables, will premiere on March 11
and will run through Sunday, March 15. Alumni Night is Saturday,
March 14, with a reception to follow. Please program those
iPhones today! All reserved seats are $8. All shows begin at 7:00
p.m. except for Sunday’s show which will begin at 2:00 p.m. Make
your plans early. You won’t want to miss this beautiful story. Our
Lions on the Prowl:
Another Outstanding
The 2008 fall season was a great one for the St. Pius X Golden Lions.
Our football team entered the last game of the regular season undefeated as they played Dunwoody
for the region championship. In an unbelievably hard fought and physical game, the
Lions ended up on the short side of the scoreboard, but affirmed everyone’s opinion of them as a
hard nosed overachieving group of young men. The season had numerous memorable moments
starting with a 21-10 victory over Marist. This was a game the Lions controlled from beginning
to end. For an individual play, I don’t think anything could top Jonathan Carter’s full flip into
the end zone on the last play of the game to defeat Carver. There was also 45-35 shootout with
Washington. Afterward, the entire team, the cheerleaders, and our fans held a pep rally at the
Varsity, where we enjoyed the dogs and rings. To top it off, we got to enjoy our first “home”
state playoff game in 40 years. This team gave us so much!
Our volleyball team began the year with one singular goal: to hang a volleyball banner on the
“Wall of Fame” in the gym. The team finished the year with a 48-12 record. They won the
region championship, as well as the sectional championship. On October 30, in front of a large
and boisterous St. Pius crowd, they defeated Creekview in the state semifinals and advanced to
the state championship game. In the finals, the girls lost a hard fought match to Woodward, but
achieved their goal of putting a volleyball banner on the “Wall.”
Our fast pitch softball team had an unbelievable season capturing the region championship and
the north state sectional and advancing to the “final four” in Columbus. Behind the pitching
of senior Pepper Gay, the team had some unforgettable moments. With Princess Krebs hitting
the first ever varsity home run at the St. Pius X field, Pepper Gay striking out 304 batters in 149
innings during the regular season, and the team turning in one dazzling defensive play after another,
there was much excitement. The most exciting moment of all, however, was in the north
sectional finals. Playing the number 1 ranked team in the state, Lakeview Fort Oglethorpe, the
game entered the bottom of the 10th inning (fast pitch regulation games are 7 innings) tied 0-0.
With Princess Krebs on third and one out, the opposition chose to intentionally walk Cynthia
Stone. In a daring move, Coach Winland thought she could get a bat on the ball so he called
for a suicide squeeze. Cynthia got the bunt down and Princess slid in under the tag. Lions win!
The team went on from there to finish 4th in the state.
Our boys’ and girls’ cross country teams are known state-wide for their year in, year out excellence.
This year was no different. Both teams had outstanding seasons. The girls, in spite
of some serious injury problems, finished 9th in the state. The boys, after winning the region
championship, finished 3rd in the state. Two of the highlights of the season were the hosting
of the “Altitude Invitational” and the region championship at our course at Mercer University.
Not only did our runners perform in an outstanding fashion, but our parents also ran the meet in
a way that brought praise from everyone. “We’re from Pi Hi—Couldn’t be prouder!”

Season!
For the third consecutive year our competition cheerleading
squad captured the region championship.
The girls performed well all season, exhibiting their
most challenging routine ever. The team peaked at
the region championships as they captured the first
place trophy and moved on to the state competition
where they finished 15th.
The fall season was great for our teams and exciting
for our fans. We expect the winter season to offer
much of the same.
See you at the games.
