On the
December
26th, the
world’s
most
powerful
earthquake struck deep
under the Indian Ocean.
The earthquake triggered
several tsunamis that
left cities in complete
devastation. The tsunami
destroyed villages and
seaside resorts throughout
Southeast Asia and
other regions, including
Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India,
Thailand, the Maldives,
Somalia, Myanmar,
Malaysia, and others.
According to Associated
Press, at least 155,000
people are known to have
died and the count is still
taking place. The tsunami
took more than 155,000
lives in a period of 12
hours and left many others
injured. Tens of thousands
reported missing, and over
a million left homeless.
In addition to the large
Principal Steve Spellman proudly reads the review of St.
Pius in “Atlanta Magazine.” St. Pius was ranked among
other top ten schools in Georgia.
For parents who are looking for
the best match for their child’s
education, “Atlanta Magazine”
highlights the top schools in the
state. The high school search process outlined
by this magazine, divides the forty best public
and private high schools into categories. These
categories include a list of schools that excel
in language arts, sports, arts, science and math,
and few are awarded to be the best all around
school.
A Sri Lankan man awaits in desbelief near his tsunami- devastated
village. The tsunami ravaged many regions and killed more than
155,000 people (Photo: AP/KRT).
number of local residents,
up to 9,000 foreign tourists,
mostly Europeans were
among the dead. The
correct final toll may never
be known due to bodies
swept out to sea, but it is
likely to be higher than the
The all-around school was given to those
schools that can cater to the many strengths
and talents of all their students. These schools
must excel in all four academic areas. One of
the ten schools in all Georgia to be given this
prestigious award was St. Pius.
Senior Lauren Tee says, “I think Pius does
deserve to be in the top ten because of the great
people and faculty. The students make the
school what it is.”
The other schools include Centennial High
School, The Lovett School, Marist School,
Milton High School, Pace Academy, Parkview
High School, Starr’s Mill High School, The
Westminster School, and Woodward academy.
St. Pius has been given this award by
“Atlanta Magazine” because of its high
academic standards and ability to attend to
a variety of student’s academic talents and
abilities.
Staff member Ms. Ravielle comments, “I
think we were ranked appropriately because we
provide a very comprehensive program and rich
tradition in Atlanta that not many other schools
provide.”
The article describes St. Pius’s wide variety
current estimate.
The plight of the natural
disaster has caused a
major humanitarian call
from several parts of the
world. U.S. Charities have
reported raising more than
$337 million so far for
emergency relief. President
Bush made a 10,000
personal donation to the
relief and stated that “the
most important contribution
a person can make is
cash”. Donation givers
range from private funds to
philanthropic individuals.
When a country is faced
with such a terrible tragedy
such as this we must do
everything that we can in
order to help. As a private
fund for the disaster, St.
Pius plans to raise money
for the survivors of the
Newly elected Archbishop
Gregory ready to serve in
Atlanta (page 7).
devastation and the many
regions affected. The St.
Pius community and staff,
including students, are
willing to give as much of a
donation as they can to the
tsunami victims.
On Wednesday, St.
Pius hosted a fundraiser at
the Pius vs. Marist game.
“Come if you care,” as
the fund’s catchy title,
was held for all St. Pius
students, in which students
paid admission in order
to get in. The National
Honors Society, including
moderator Mrs. Gray
Walts, helped organize
the successful event. NHS
successfully organized over
$1,000 from ticket sales
only. The money raised by
the fund will be sent to the
victims of the tsunami.
of AP courses, and extracurricular activities.
The magazine recognizes the Green Club,
Writers Club, Model UN Nations, and the Math
Club. Pius has twenty-two varsity sports which
hold state championships in soccer, basketball,
and tennis.
The literary aspect of St. Pius is mentioned
with emphasis on its Carpe Diem magazine
and the Golden Lion Newspaper which have
won numerous awards. “Atlanta Magazine”
acknowledges the fact that St. Pius, the oldest
Archdiocesan Catholic School in Atlanta, was
the first to allow integration into the school.
Dr Wilburn believes that, “the article simply
let other people know how great our school
is, we already knew it. The article simply let
the city know. It was great exposure for us
and it’s something we have been trying to tell
people all along. Also, one thing the article
pointed out that people didn’t know was how
superb and diverse our curriculum is, extending
from our learning lab program to our AP and
honors program which no other school in the
city has. Basically, we are able to educate and
provide a well rounded learning environment
for everyone.”

Perfecting the art of being cool
Opinions Editor
I sat nervously
at my computer.
My hands began
to tremble.
My breathing
quickened.
Unconsciously, I
started to hum.
As I stared at the
computer screen
in front of me, my
mind was in a haze.
I did not know how to articulate the
one, precise answer to the question
on the screen. Over and over, I
repeated the words in my head:
Why do I want to join the Napoleon
Dynamite fan club?
Slowly I began to think it through.
Why do I want to join the Napoleon
Dynamite fan club? Is it that
Napoleon Dynamite is hands down
the best thing that has happened to
my generation of moviegoers? Is it
that Napoleon Dynamite represents
a sign of hope in a movie world
controlled by trilogies, sequels, and
remakes? Or is it that Napoleon
Dynamite has given me the best
lesson in the art of being cool?
The first time I saw Napoleon
Dynamite, I knew my life had
been drastically changed. I finally
understood how cool it is to play
tetherball with yourself. I finally
realized I am not the only one who
practices their sweet dance moves at
home. No longer is it uncool to know
Lost in the world of reality
2005…a brand
new year, a brand
new start, but more
importantly…. a
brand new season
of “The Simple
Life.” That’s right
folks, Nicole and
Paris are back and
more outrageous
than ever! The
spoiled duo has
conquered the farm, the highway,
and now they’re taking over the office
as interns.
I am proud to admit that I have
never actually watched or even
thought about watching an episode of
the previous two installments of “The
Simple Life.” But I have decided that
I might actually give the third season
a shot, after all, third time’s a charm.
“Hi jinks will no doubt ensue” is the
tag line in the ads for the new season.
I don’t know about you, but nothing
attracts me to a television show quite
like “hi jinks.”
Actually it isn’t the “hi jinks” at
all that draw me to the show, it’s
the fact that the show itself looks so
songs in sign language or to draw
mythical creatures. Life began to
make sense.
After Christmas, about a billion
people told me how they had found
the movie underneath their tree. At
last, I knew it was time to express my
admiration of Napoleon to the world.
I decided it was time to make the big
step. I would join the fan club.
Before I could become an
honorary Napoleon Dynamite fan
club member, I had to answer some
The first time I saw
Napoleon Dynamite, I
knew my life had been
drastically changed.
questions.
If I were president and evil robots
said they were going to take over the
world in 10 years, what would I do?
Mesmerize them my dance skills,
what do you think?
If I could have one mythical beast
as a pet, which would it be? A liger,
it’s a mixture between a lion and a
tiger, bred for its skills and magic. It’s
pretty much my favorite animal ever.
What skills do I have? “Numbchuck”
skills, bow-hunting skills,
computer hacking skills.
But then I had to come face to
horrendous that it makes everything
else on television look Emmy worthy.
How can “The Simple Life” be
found on the same channel as such
great shows as “24” and “Arrested
Development”? Well my friend, there
are some questions to which only God
knows the answers.
(Image from ASNE/KRT Campus)
Paris Hilton, a “simple” kind of a
woman.
face with the real reason I wanted
to join the Napoleon Dynamite fan
club. What was it about Napoleon
that made me feel proud when
people pointed out our sometimesquestionable
resemblance? What
made me want to dress up like
Napoleon Dynamite for Homecoming
theme day, instead of adhering to the
prescribed “Egyptian” theme? Why
had I traveled to four movie store
locations on Christmas Eve to try to
bring Napoleon home for the family,
only to feel a pang of depression
when I realized there was a nationwide
sell out?
Then it hit me like a steak
smacking me in the face. Napoleon
Dynamite is my hero. They say that
everyone needs a hero, a role model
in their lives. In Napoleon Dynamite
I finally found someone worthy of my
true admiration.
Honestly, Napoleon shows us the
path to true coolness. Helping your
friends is cool. Drawing pictures for
girls you like is cool. Giving your
brother a lift into town is cool. And
dancing to hip-hop in front of the
whole school is way cool.
I guess the bottom line is,
Napoleon Dynamite is cool. If you
haven’t seen his movie, you should.
Then maybe you too will understand
why I joined the club. And also you
might get what people mean when
they ask me: “What are you goin’ do
today Napoleon?”
But the crazy antics of Paris and
Nicole aren’t the only things to look
forward to this new year; we also get
treated to “Who’s Your Daddy?” a
show in which a young woman who
was adopted as an infant is presented
with 15 older men and must figure
out which one is her biological father.
Even more compelling television
brought to you by the Fox network.
But if internships and genetic
detective work are not your cup of
tea, I suggest you look no further
than “Nanny 911.” In “Nanny 911”
an English nanny is brought into an
average American household to tame
some spoiled brats (hmm, spoiled
brats seem to be a recurring theme
in Fox television). Children being
disciplined… now that’s what I call
entertainment.
So with all these outrageous
“reality” shows clogging my television
screen I have decided to make the
ultimate New Year’s resolution: to cut
back on time spent watching TV. But
what will I do with all this free time
you ask? Maybe enjoy a good read,
go for a little jog, or get some chores
done. Ah, who am I kidding? I’ll
probably just play “Halo 2.”

“It’s a matter of faith!”
NICHOLAS
BERLON
Staff Writer
We slowly crept
through the
underground crypt.
On the right and left
were tombs of rich
pagans alongside the
tombs of popes. This
is the Scavi touran
underground
investigation of Saint
Peter’s Basilica in
the Vatican.
As we wandered the crypts under
the massive basilica, the guide’s
voice drones on. “And the Emperor
Constantine… he….” I tune her out
and stare intently at the nearest crypt.
Amazing that such a massive basilica
could be built on top of these tombs…
We turned a corner and suddenly
were going up some stairs out of the
musty tombs. Still underground, we
travel to a small chapel.
“And here we have the bones of San
Pietro, or Saint Peter…” We go up a
small set of steps that seems almost
like a hidden staircase and end up in
a cave-like room with glass floors and
an opening probably 3 feet wide in
one wall. Inside the opening is a shelf
that has a United States Air Force
vacuum-sealed container. (How ironic
that the country that has enormous
arguments about “under God” being
in the Pledge of Allegiance should
make the box to house one of the
most famous saints) “We cannot be
totally sure that these are the real
bones of Saint Peter…” explains
the guide. Unfortunately, the bones
were lost for a period of time when
excavations were being performed.
Someone asks a question. “Have the
bones been carbon dated to see if they
are from the time of Saint Peter?”
The group looks dumbfounded. For a
minute it seems that there will be loud
cries of “Blasphemy!” followed by a
stoning. All three priests turn to each
other simultaneously and comfort
each other by saying “It’s a matter of
faith!” and then praying.
This anecdote is about the bones of
Saint Peter. Lately, people have been
making more and more things into
“matters of faith” that really shouldn’t
Saint Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican. Vatican City has more than 12,000 visitors a day
who come to see the Vatican Museum, Saint Peter’s, and take the Scavi tour, which is
an underground tour of Saint Peter’s Basilica.
be. Whether it is a statue of the Ten
Commandments in a courthouse or
an “evolution is just a theory” sticker
in a text-book, controversy exists
between religion and government.
People, especially at this school, need
to remember that there are always
opposing viewpoints. Whether or not
you agree with something, try to keep
an open mind. Having an open mind
will get you much farther in life than
being closed to new ideas. Remember,
not everything is “a matter of faith.”

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
CHARLIE KEY
Features
Editor
Frosty Christmas
night-air still fresh
in my lungs and
honey-baked ham
in my stomach, I
slid into my movie
theater seat with
anticipation-eyes.
This was it – two
years of built up
obsession over the
work of director
Wes Anderson made me giddy as
the lights dimmed and the projector
began to purr. With my eyes and
ears I unwrapped the last Christmas
present of the day – The Life Aquatic
with Steve Zissou.
I have to confess, this review, as
you might could already tell, might be
a little less than unbiased. You have
to understand though that, though
Anderson’s films aren’t for everyone,
the people with whom they resonate
fall hard for them. Like a good rock
and roll band, Anderson makes all
of his films with a distinctive feel but
always manages to tell wildly different
stories. Protagonists have included
a desperate playwriting fifteen-yearold,
a burnt-out shaggy-haired thick
sunglasses-wearing has been tennis
star, two twenty-something small
time (and I mean small time) but
eager crooks, and the red-capped
depresssed oceanogreapher Steve
Zissou, played by Bill Murray.
Murray has already been in two
out of the three previous Anderson
movies, but not until Life Aquatic has
he been given enough room to really
stretch out both his comedic and
dramatic muscles. By giving Murray
the lead role in the movie, Anderson
coaxes out the full range of Bill
Murray’s talent. There is a scene in
the movie in which Murray as Zissou
shows the viewers all the different
parts, rooms, equipment, and
underwater companions of his ship
The Belafonte. Anderson’s artful yet
writerly touch unveils Murray’s gift
the same way. Murray does almost
everything in this role. He lounges
around, stocky, in a speedo. He hits
on Cate Blanchett (unsucessfully). He
takes action to the max in a no holds
barred art movie fire fight (consisting
of pirates, explosions, and Iggy and
the Stooges). He also dances, cusses,
drinks, and, like a senstive grizzly
bear, cries. Yes, Bill Murray crying
looks like a grey-fuzzed Smokey the
Bear. In a good way, that is.
Murray’s standout performance’s
biggest riveal is the movie itself
– Anderson paints his adventure
with blues and reds and whites like
Matisse lounging on a French beach.
The footage itself could be sold as a
moving painting. The soundtrack,
as in every Anderson movie, is
outstanding, with everyone from
the aforementioned Stooges to Devo
(whose frontman composes all of
Anderson’s background music), Joan
Baez, The Zombies, Sigur Ros, David
Bowie, and a man named Seu Jorge
singing, in Portugese, some more
Bowie songs. The writing is artful
and nuanced, despit Owen Wilson
taking a breather on cowriting, and is
accentuated by the brilliant ensemble
cast, including a delightful Dafoe
and Goldbloom, a quirky pregnant
Blanchett, and a Kentucky-fried
Wilson.
Still, the movie does have
its shortcomings and imperfections
– Angelica huston remains
disappointingly aloof thoughout the
whole movie, and Wilson’s put-on
accent can, to put it mildly, take some
getting used to. But aknowledging
these blemishes, the movies till shines
as one of the best of the last few years
(and ranks up there with the best
All-timer’s, for me at least). Most
importantly (sit up straight now and
listen closely), it is a Good Movie.
It’s not a comedy. It’s not Meet the
Parents. One expecting otherwise
will be disappointed. The movie does
have its laugh-out-loud moments,
but it’s more a for better or for worse
portrait of an aging man lost at sea
in his life. He’s been thrown the life
preserver of his maybe son (Wilson),
and somehow, with dynamite, liqour,
a red wooly hat, and his loyal (kind
of) crew, he might just make it back to
dry land.
Your people of the year
We asked you guys which public
figure best embodied the year 2004
for you and you answered this very
broad question with a very wide
array of answers.
From Paris Hilton
to Barack Obama,
the school’s diversity
shined through the answers. You
voted on people from the realms of
sports, politics, music, movies, and
even from the St. Pius community.
Sports
1. The Boston Red Sox
“Because they showed how striving
for your goals, even though no one
thought they could do it, ends in the
best.”
- Grant McKinley, ‘07’
2. Michael Vick
“Michael Vick because he brought
the city of Atlanta back to professional
football. Before Mike Vick played,
Atlanta hated watching Falcons’
games, but [since] he started each
game, the Georgia Dome has been
sold out.”
- Neal Partadiharja, ‘06’
3. Pat Tillman
4. Lance Armstrong
5. Kobe Bryant
Politics
1. George W. Bush
“George Bush because 2004 was a
horrible year.”
- Maggie Hamilton, ‘06’
“George Bush, because 2004 was a
year of war, death. Why shouldn’t he
be the figure who best represented
2004?”
- John McNabb, ‘07’
“George W. Bush because he stands
behind his people and does what he
feels is right.
- Grace Moler, ‘07’
2. John Kerry
“Sen. John Kerry because he almost
saved us from evil.”
- Patrick Sweeney, ‘08’
3. Dick Cheney
4. Barack Obama
“Barack Obama best embodies
politics of 2004 because he showed
the revitalization of the Democratic
Party. Even though democrats didn’t
gain any political power in the fall
elections, the party realized that it
needed to appeal to more people in
all different walks of life. Maybe now
the party will be able to improve its
public image and hopefully Obama
will help liberals become a more
public force to be reckoned with.”
- Stefann Plishka, ‘06’
5. Colin Powell
6. “A United States Marine. For
the entire year they fight
in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Not only have they fought
bravely there, but they also
left the war to protect Haiti
and assist in the tsunami
affected regions. They can
be stretched thin and still
protect the world.”
- Patrick Quigley, 08
Music
1. P. Diddy
“P. Diddy because he spoke out and
got a lot of people to register and
vote. Vote or Die! He did a good job
putting the voting issue out there for
college students or anyone 18 and
older to register and vote.”
- Chi Chi Ngoddy, ‘08’
2. Usher
“In my opinion, the person that best
embodied 2004 is the singer Usher
because he was on top of everything
this year, making history with his
music.”
- Bianca Carter, ‘07’
3. Britney Spears
Movies
1. Mel Gibson
“Mel Gibson because he portrayed
Christ’s passion in theaters
everywhere around the world. Gibson
was very humble in making the movie
and used his own money to produce
the movie.”
- James Watters, ‘06’
2. Paris Hilton
“Paris Hilton because people are
getting more superficial as time goes
on.”
- Steven Orr, ‘05’
3. Oprah
“Oprah Winfrey prepares me for
the outside world. She has helped
many people to overcome fears and
challenges in their lives.”
- Caroline Peck, ‘05’
4. Arnold Schwarzenegger
5. Jamie Foxx
“He’s a sharp-witted comedian, but
in more dramatic television movies
and feature films, he’s also one of the
most talented actors, [but] nobody
[paid] attention until his spectacular
dramatic performance from ‘Ray’
caught the world’s attention.”
- Tom Osborne, ‘06’
6. Michael Moore
“He represented the growing
extremism of American politics,
the discontent of some the
country regarding the Iraq war,
and ultimately, the failure of the
Democratic Party to regain any power
in Washington, D.C.”
- Katherine Petti, ‘06’
St. Pius
1. Mr. Spellman
“Mr. Spellman best embodies the
year 2004 because he is a role model
for everyone and is the coolest man
ever!”
- Catherine Harris, ’08’
2. You guys also have a lot of
self confidence!
“Me. But, I am the one who lived
it (04) to the fullest for me. I don’t
concern myself with the famous or
rich, I have a hard enough time
taking care of just me.”
St. Pius resolutions
for the New Year
“I’m going to
lose 10 pounds.”
“I’m going to quit
eating sweets.”
“I’m going to do
my homework.”
“I’m going to quit procrastinating.”
“I’m not going to fight with my
siblings.”
These are just a few of the many
familiar promises people make to
themselves as the clock winds down
to midnight signaling the New
Year. These resolutions are made
in attempt to better oneself for the
New Year by either trying to change
your look, attitude, eating habits,
relationships, etc. As we all know,
these are some of the shortest lasting
and fastest broken promises known
to mankind. Congratulations to the
few and the proud who are capable of
making their resolutions and sticking
with them until they become habitual
and routine. These people are the
role models for those who are striving
this year to make a significant change
in their lives.
It is said that it takes 21 days to
make a habit, so whether you are
trying to make one or break one keep
on pushing, you’re almost there!
These are some of the responses
when Pius students were asked what
their New Years resolutions are:
“To take over the world”
Coach Carter
“To graduate.” Daniel
Van Gogh, Go!
ASHLEY
BROUILLARD
Staff Writer
When we think of the
world’s great art, our
thoughts often stray
to the bustling cities
of Europe, but this
fall/winter the great art
of Europe came to our
very own city of Atlanta.
The High Museum of
Art has been housing
some of these pieces
since October 19 th when
they received a collection of modern
art from the Kroller- Muller Museum
in Southeastern Holland. The exhibit
focuses on late 19 century and early 20 th
century paintings. This collection consists
of over twenty paintings and drawings by
Vincent Van Gogh. It also includes other
neo-impressionist painters from his time.
Students from the St. Pius community
who have seen the exhibit have been
impressed by the artwork they have seen.
Sophomore Katie DeCantillion spoke
of Van Gogh’s ink and chalk drawings,
saying they “conveyed a sense of what
was happening in the image.” Also,
sophomore Sara Woodward mentioned
some of the neoimpressionist artwork
and how they “consisted of such
concise and breath taking detail.”
The entire exhibit includes
approximately eight four drawings,
paintings, and decorative art objects
and in most cases is their first time
being shown in the United States. The
exhibit will be on display at the High
Museum until January 16 th .
Starry Night, one of Van Gogh’s most
famous paintings is an oil painting on
canvas. Van Gogh created this piece 13
months before his death while living in an
asylum.
Ginn, Horgan begin and end athletic careers
Casey Horgan is recognized in the halls by her long blonde hair
but she’s recognized in the swimming pool as a leading senior. Horgan
mentions swimming with a smile and her upbeat personality encourages her
teammates enduring the practices until 8 p.m.
During her Freshmen year Horgan lettered and was 14 th in state in the 100
meter breast stroke. She contributes some of her success to her brother, Tim,
who grew up swimming and held a record as well.
Spotlight
Co-Editors
How long have you been swimming for?
13 years. My brother and I grew up swimming.
Do you swim outside of Pius?
Not anymore but I swam from 5 th grade until 9 th grade at Swim Atlanta.
Do meets or practices ever interfere with your social activities? Not really because most meets
are during the week and practices are during the evenings after school.
Who is your mentor and inspiration to succeed in swimming? Coach Gilbert (Bob Gilbert’s
wife) because she is so encouraging and has accomplished a lot in her swimming career. She
has a really optimistic attitude.
Are you planning on swimming in college?
Probably not because it would be too big of a commitment. I really want to be able to enjoy my
college years and swimming on that level might prevent that.
“Casey is one of the
most dedicated and
successful swimmers I
have had the pleasure
of coaching. We will
miss her tremendously
next year.”
- Coach Carter
“Casey is dedicated,
motivated, and a
strong leader. She gives
inspiration for younger
teammates. She will be
greatly missed both on
and off the field.” Coach
Novotny-Beaver
Casey Horgan, a leading senior on the swim team,
credits her coaches and her family to her success as
an experienced swimmer.
New comer, Erica Ginn, shows her rythm with the Dance Team at
all the St. Pius home basketball games.
“Erica always cares about everyone
and she’s a great friend. She’s
always smiling and seems to be
happy. She has a friendly spirit.”
-LeiLani Perriatt
Coming to a brand new setting is always a scary experience. Erica Ginn has come to
St. Pius and made her mark. The sweet freshman came from St. Thomas Moore and has
been involved in dance for the past three years. She shined on the freshman cheerleading
football squad. Now she is busting a move on the dance team. Ginn hopes to make good
grades so she can get into a good college and dance there. St. Pius watch out! Erica Ginn
will be in the spotlight for awhile.
What made you interested in the dance team?
When I was in middle school, I would come to the basketball games and watch the dance
team. I thought they did such a good job and I knew then that I wanted to be a part of the
team.
What have you enjoy the most about your freshman year?
I have enjoyed being involved in extra-curricular activities. Cheerleading was a lot of fun
and they didn’t have a team at St. Thomas Moore so cheering was a new experience for me.
What has been your least favorite part about being a freshman?
Well (giggles), I get lost a lot and I’m late to class a lot. It’s a big school!
Are you nervous about performing in front of all the people at the basketball games?
No, because I’m used to it by now with dancing.
Has St. Pius X been everything you’d thought it would be?
Yes, it has. I love Pius. I love the people here and everyone is really nice to me.
Do you want to dance when you get older?
Yes, I want to dance in college and I wouldn’t mind growing up and becoming a backup
dancer for Usher. That’s my dream.
“Erica is a new talent on the
dance team. As a freshman,
she brings a lot of energy and
enthusiasm.”
Archbishop Gregory takes over in Atlanta
Will the new Archbishop
continue old
traditions?
BETZ
HAMILTON
Centerspread
Would you ever think
a bishop would absolutely
love racquetball? Well, now
Atlanta can boast about
having one. The Most
Reverend Wilton D. Gregory,
SLD, was installed on
Monday, January 17 th , 2005,
as the sixth Archbishop of
Atlanta and also the seventh
Bishop of Atlanta.
Archbishop Gregory chose
the Martin Luther King
holiday for his installation
ceremony in remembrance of Martin Luther
King, Jr. The ceremony was held at the
Georgia International Conference Center
in College Park with a crowd of about eight
thousand.
The Mass was inspiring with a broad array
of cultures in native dress. Priests attended
from the Archbishop’s previous home of
Bellville and Chicago, Illinois. An extensive
group of Georgia priests and religious were in
attendance as well.
As the newly appointed Archbishop began
his speech, everyone was astonished and
pleased when he began speaking in Spanish.
Traditionally most speeches would begin in
English and conclude in Spanish. Archbishop
Gregory wanted the Hispanic community to
know that they are noticed and appreciated.
The Hispanics attending cheered throughout
the three minutes, moved that they were
being acknowledged first.
During the Presentation of the Gifts,
children dressed in native clothes lined up
and presented the Archbishop with handmade
crosses, cloths, and other meaningful gifts.
Also in line were special guests, including St.
Pius’ own Mr. Steve Spellman and Governor
Sonny Perdue.
Archbishop Gregory was born in 1947,
in Chicago, Illinois. He attended Catholic
schools beginning in elementary school. He
studied in Rome, Italy for four years at the
Pontifical Liturgical Institute. It was there that
he received his Doctorate of Sacred Liturgy.
His hobbies include racquetball, golf,
cooking, and listening to music. Yes, he loves
music and will listen to everything except acid
rock and rap. He loves cooking and especially
eating pasta. During high school he was on
the Debate team and was President of Student
Government. His favorite movie is the classic
Wizard of Oz, and is a decided dog person
rather than a cat person.
For the past three years, Archbishop
Gregory has been the President of the United
States Conference of Catholic Bishops. He
was a determined leader during the scandals
within the Church a couple years ago. His
leadership will definitely aid him while he is in
Atlanta. With his extensive travel to Canada,
Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Thailand, Brazil,
and Cuba, the Archbishop will bring those
experiences to his leadership of Atlanta as
well.
Archbishop Gregory intends on visiting the
Catholic schools frequently in order to get to
know the students, faculty and staffs. He says
that he will still continue the tradition and
give us a day off each year. “I just can’t give
a day off every time I come, though,” said the
Archbishop.
Obscure sports on ESPN 8, the ocho
goes on at this speed for hours. I
NICK
Sports Editor
It is the dead of
winter; there is
snow outside, gale
force winds, and
a dreary gray film
covers the sky.
Well, friends, thank
goodness for sports.
When the weather
outside makes me
want to cry; the
way all my favorite
NFL teams lose their playoff games
makes me want to cry, too. I’ll always
choose watching the Chargers over
watching the NBA. It is scary to me
that football is almost over. I want to
cherish these last few precious weeks
of football, but I can’t help thinking
about what I’m going to do after the
Super Bowl. The terrifying answer to
that question is: nothing. The month
or so between the Super Bowl and
the beginning of March Madness is
that slow time of the year that sports
fans know as the time when they are
forced to watch NBA games or suffer
through a month of no television.
Well, I have some great alternatives
to the NBA. Most of these sports are a
little obscure, but give them a chance.
The World’s Strongest Man
Competition, weekdays on ESPN 2.
This sport is underrated to the maxx.
Watching huge guys race to lift a
large stone on to a platform is more
exciting than it should be. The events
are varied but all involve getting a
hernia or throwing out your back
while trying to pull a tractor trailer or
an oversized boat anchor.
Ultimate Cage Fighting
Championships, all the time on Pay
Per View.
Cage fighting is another great
sport that doesn’t get the attention
deserving of a sport in which so many
people are beaten so thoroughly.
Cage fighting is like wrestling, except
cool. I can think of nothing better
than sitting down with the boys and
watching a good ol’ cage fight.
Table Tennis, 2-4 a.m. ESPN 2.
If you thought you were good
because you can put a little backspin
on the ball sometimes, than here is
your wake up call. An average game
goes something like this: a serve
that goes thirty feet in the air and is
returned at over seventy miles per
hour with wicked top spin. The game
goes on at this speed for hours. I
highly recommend this sport to all the
insomniacs out there.
Cricket, Pay Per View.
Even though I have no idea how
to play the game, it is still fun to
watch. All I have learned from the
countless hours of cricket watching
is that the game is something like
baseball, involves wickets, and is most
hardc+ore.
These sports are just the tip of the
iceberg as far as obscure sports on
ESPN 2 are concerned. These are
good examples of ways to pass the
time while the competitive sports take
a sabbatical. I hope you enjoy some of
these suggestions.
Two in a row for the St. Pius X Lady Lions
BRENT
MODAK
Staff Writer
While writing
this story I found
that it seemed
very familiar. And
that’s because it
was familiar and
it had happened
before; for the
second straight
year the Lady
Lion basketball team has won their
host tournament, the Christmas
Classic. But don’t let being named
champions two years in a row fool
you, there was nothing easy about
defending their title. They had to go
up against some of the best teams in
Georgia and the country, such as the
Teurlings Catholic Rebels, who they
defeated in the finals 63-41. Head
Coach Stephanie Dunn remarked,
“It is a tribute to the team’s defense.
We definitely stepped up our game
on the defensive side of the ball and
it showed with a repeat.” The entire
tournament was dominated by the
Lions and in particular sophomore
sensation Kelley Cain, who said,
“It was great to have such a great
individual tournament but even
better that we got the win.” What got
the girls to a repeat, and what gets
any team to dynasty status, is hard
work. I know it’s cliché but practice
makes perfect, and close to perfect
are our Lady Lions.
Currently, the Lady Lions stand
at an impressive 18-3.The girls are
coming off a convincing win over
archrival, Marist.

St. Pius played
host to its fifth
annual Christmas
Tournament over
the holidays. The
tournament brings
Catholic High
Schools from all
PATRICK over the nation to
DUBUS compete in a threeday
tournament.
Staff Writer
Eight teams
participated in the
boy’s portion of the tournament with
schools ranging from all over Florida,
Los Angeles, California and here in
Atlanta. With powerhouses Bishop
Verot and Belen Jesuit, two of the top
teams in Florida, St. Pius had a tough
road ahead of them if they were going
to win the championship.
Monday was opening night for the
Lions, as they took on cross-town rival
Our Lady of Mercy. Despite a cold
start, the boys blew the game open in
the second quarter and would easily
advance to the semifinals. With the
starters putting the game away early,
many of the Lion’s growing stars saw
valuable playing time. Pius would
eventually win 59-31.
Unfortunately, Tuesday’s game
against the Bishop Kenny Crusaders
of Jacksonville would not have the
same outcome. Pius faced a doubledigit
deficit at the half, trailing 32-
23. The Lions had only themselves
to blame, making several mental
errors by giving up easy baskets by
constantly coming out of their zone
defense. The team also failed to
capitalize on open shots from all over
the court.
A rejuvenated team came out in
the second half led by juniors William
Wolf and Aaron Parr. With 1:23 left
in the 4 th quarter, Center Joey Flint
converted a lay-up to cut the lead
to 49-46 making it a one-possession
game. But a foul on an inbounds with
5.9 seconds left sent the Crusaders
to the line where they would make
both free throws, sealing the game
and killing Pius’ championship hopes.
The final score would end up 52-50.
Aaron Parr finished with 19 points
and Wolf added 17. But the flawless
shooting of Bishop Kenny’s Brendan
Walker, who had 20 points alone in
the first half and finished with 27,
proved to be the difference maker
with clutch shots throughout the
game.
Wednesday proved to be sweet
atonement for the Lions as they
faced a dominant Bishop Verot team
from Fort Myers. The Vikings came
into the game ranked fifth in the
state of Florida. But a determined
Pius refused to go away and stayed
the game thanks to constant three
defense by the whole team, which
had the Vikings confused throughout
the course of the game. With four
Pius boys thrive in Christmas Classic
two huge turnovers that would both
lead to crucial points to cut the lead
down to one. With 33 seconds and
Pius still trailing by one, Parr sank
a three pointer sending the crowd
into frenzy and giving the Lions a
two-point advantage. With seconds
remaining, Parr would once again be
the hero and pull down the gamesealing
rebound and make a critical
free throw to go on to a 52-50 win.
The game was an emotional ride
for the players, fans and coaches
of both squads. “This game was a
great building block for us going into
the second half of the season.” Says
sophomore center Joey Flint, “I think
it really boosted our confidence and
will help us much later in the season.”
Wolf finished with 18 leading Pius
for scoring and Parr chipped in 16
and was named to the all-tournament
team for his superior play. Belen
Jesuit of Miami Florida would go on
to win the tournament in a routing of
Bishop Kenny in the championship
game.
The tournament put the Lions
at 8-5 overall, already surpassing
last years total number of wins (6).
“I was impressed with the way we
played throughout the tournament.
We showed a lot of character and
motivation the way we constantly
battled,” says junior forward Derek
Smith, “but inconsistency is something
we’ll need to work on before the
region and state tournament.”
Pius will start the New Year
with the second leg of their region
schedule with big games at home
against Etowah, Tucker and Marist.
The team hopes to finish no lower
than third in the region tournament
and looks to advance on to the
state tournament, which Smith
“guarantees” will happen. “We’re
going to have some great chances
to upset some good teams,” believes
Flint. “I think were going to surprise
a lot of people.”
Flint is a starter for the Lions and
leads the team in assists. Both he and
Smith have played key roles on this
year’s team and will need to step it up
as the season marches forward.
The Lions are currently 10-6 and
will have undoubtedly their toughest
game of the year so far on Tuesday
at home against region opponent
Etowah High School, who is currently
undefeated in the region.
Calling all artists,
singers, actors,
dancers, and
musicians! The
wait is over! The new arts wing is
finally open, and students couldn’t
be happier. The new mammoth wing
includes enormous new rooms for
drama, band, dance, and art, as well
as other extremely needed accessories
such as spacious dressing rooms
and a costume room housing many
costumes for dance, band, and drama.
Now that the students have been able
to explore the new enhancement
the question is: What is the best part
of this new addition? It depends
on who you ask. Sophomore dance
company member Leslie Trammell
says, “I really enjoy having expanded
dressing rooms.” This seems to be a
favorite among many dancers and
actors who once had to crowd in
the petite bathrooms to get dressed
for performances. “All the mirrors
After the thirtysix
point beat
down that the
Southern California
Trojans put on the
Oklahoma Sooners in the National
Championship, Trojan fans rejoiced.
After last year’s season where the
Trojans didn’t get to play for the
title, even though Oklahoma lost
their conference championship game.
Well, this year the Trojans got their
title ring, and there is no one happier
in the school than Coach Cook.
Growing up in Southern Cal, Coach
Cook was a big Trojan fan. He had
family who had went there, and some
friends who soon would go there.
Now that they are National champs
he is extremely happy. Coach Cook
states, “I was very pleased with the
way that the season ended up, even
though my [Georgia] Bulldogs were a
disappointment.”
Coach Cook has many
friends and relatives who have gone
to USC, including his god parents,
and a few of his cousins. “This
lot of space [in the new drama
room] to work with,” says freshman
Pius Player Amanda McKenley.
Sophomore choir member Isabel
Reynolds loves singing in the new
band room because, “It is so big and
sounds great with the new sound
absorbers.”
The fine arts teachers are also
enjoying their new classrooms. For
the first time in the history of Pius
Players drama teacher Ms. Spark was
speechless when I asked her what she
thought of the new expansion. The
only word she could manage to utter
after a few seconds of contemplation
was, “Spectacular.” Spectacular is the
ideal word to explain this magnificent
expansion that will benefit everyone
involved in the arts for generations to
come.
The new arts wing extends almost to the
street at the front of the school. The students
are still getting used to seeing the
large building at the front of the school.
Coach Cook loves Trojan title
national title validates last year’s
season, where they lost early in the
season to a good California team.”
Coach Cook said. He believes that
this title is good for USC, because it
proves that there are other people
outside of California who like USC.
Coach Cook tells me that “I love the
national championship for USC. It
gives them some resignation for there
accomplishments.”
After Southern Cal won the
title, Matt Leinart who is a junior,
is thinking about going in the 2005
NFL draft. Coach Cook wants him
to come back to USC for his senior
year. If Leinart would come back for
his senior season with the Trojans, he
would be accompanied with explosive
junior running back Reggie Bush,
and big play receiver Dwayne Jarrett.
Coach Cook really wants Leinart to
come back to USC, because they will
have a better team with the [Leinart]
Heisman trophy winner.
Coach Cook is not only
proud of his Trojans, he is proud of
there fans for standing by there team.
“True Trojan fans always stand by
there team” Cook said. He went on to
say, “They made the entire Southern
California nation proud to were
In the end Coach Cook loves
his Southern California Trojans as the
National Champions. Even though he
wanted his Georgia Bulldogs to be in
the place that the Trojans are in right
now he will take the Trojan title.
Work continues on
our spring musical
this semester West
Side Story. Even
though the actual
play isn’t until
April, the Fine Arts
department is busy
at work getting ready
for this production.
West Side Story is a
more modern-day
Romeo and Juliet
type story in which Tony (Romeo)
and Maria (Juliet) are in love, but
torn between the two gangs that they
are associated with. The two gangs
in this play, the Sharks and the Jets,
fight over their territory, the Jets
wanting to keep out the Puerto Rican
Sharks and the Sharks wanting to
oust the Jets from New York. The
famous balcony scene from Romeo
and Juliet is depicted behind a ratty
apartment in New York City on a
creaky metal fire escape.
The play starts with a major fight
between the rival gangs or “rumble”.
An Academy-Award winning movie
was also made on this play and
debuted in 1961. The part of Tony
in West Side Story will be played by
Christian Rodriguez and Maria will be
played by Katherine Petti.
Lending their hand of assistance in
this production is the St. Pius X Band
which will play the part of orchestra
in this production.
“The pit orchestra will add liveliness
and energy to the play,” says
Sophomore Paul McDowell.
Numerous musical pieces will be
chosen to accompany the dancing and
singing that will take place on stage.
With the drama department’s new
classroom and improved changing
and storage space in the new Arts
wing, this play is sure to be a hit with
all who see it. The play debuts on
April 12 th at 7:00 p.m. Support our
school and our talented actors and see
this play.
A look back at 2004
ALEC
DADISMAN
Backside Editor
It is hard to believe that the
year 2004 is over and it is on
to 2005. The year went by so
quickly. Here is an overview
on some of the most important stories in news
and entertainment of last year.
The Passion
Mel Gibson’s movie, The Passion, came out
early in 2004. People had different feelings
toward this movie. Some people loved it; some
thought it was too violent, while others thought
it was anti- Semitic. Although there was a lot of
controversy surrounding this movie, The Passion
became the highest grossing rated R film ever.
Former President Ronald Reagan Dies
The 40th President, Ronald Reagan died June
5 at the age of 93. For many weeks there were
services and tributes to Reagan shown on
television. In 1989, Reagan had the highest
approval rating since Franklin Roosevelt’s
presidency.
Ray Charles
Singer Ray Charles died in June 2004.
Although Charles was blind since the age of
seven, he beat all odds and became a musical
icon. After his death, Ray, a movie about his life
was released. The movie helped people see the
events Ray Charles had to face in his life. There
is a lot of Oscar talk surrounding Jamie Foxx,
who played Ray Charles, and the movie.
Marlon Brando
Marlon Brando, one of the greatest actors ever,
died from pulmonary fibrosis (a lung disease)
at the age of 80. Marlon Brando was in such
movies as The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, and A
Street Car Named Desire. He was nominated for
eight Academy Awards.
Hurricanes
The year 2004 had one of the worst hurricane
seasons ever. Florida was destroyed by
Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne.
Many people evacuated the state and went
and stayed with family further north. The
hurricanes left many homeless.
Elections in Afghanistan
Although there were many threats, the Afghans
voted in their first democratic election. Hamid
Karzai won and now faces the job of helping to
stabilize the nation.
Christopher Reeves
Actor Christopher Reeves died of heart failure
in 2004. Reeves was probably most known for
his role as Superman. He also loved riding
horses. Many people remember the day in 1995
when Reeves was thrown from his horse. He
was paralyzed from the neck down. He started
the Christopher Reeves Paralysis Foundation
and was a huge believer in stem-cell research.
Red Sox win
For 86 years, the Red Sox watched their rivals
the New York Yankees win 26 titles. After
making a comeback, the Red Sox won the
World Series.
George Bush Re-elected
After many speeches and debates, the election
is over. President George W. Bush won his
second term as president of the United States.
Bush beat opponent Senator John Kerry with
51 percent of the popular vote. The election
also saw the highest voter turnout rate since
1968 with 60 percent.
Tsunami
One of the most tragic events that happened in
the year 2004 is the tsunami that ravaged South
East Asia. The tsunami was triggered by an
earthquake with a magnitude of 9.0, the fourth
largest since 1899. More than 150, 000 people
were killed in Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia
and India and many are still missing. Many
countries, including the United States, are
providing aid. Unfortunately, about two million
Asians will live in poverty because of this natural
disaster.
