A look back at 2004

It is hard to believe that the
year 2004 is over and it is on
to 2005. The year went by so
quickly. Here is an overview
on some of the most important stories in news
and entertainment of last year.
The Passion
Mel Gibson’s movie, The Passion, came out
early in 2004. People had different feelings
toward this movie. Some people loved it; some
thought it was too violent, while others thought
it was anti- Semitic. Although there was a lot of
controversy surrounding this movie, The Passion
became the highest grossing rated R film ever.
Former President Ronald Reagan Dies
The 40th President, Ronald Reagan died June
5 at the age of 93. For many weeks there were
services and tributes to Reagan shown on
television. In 1989, Reagan had the highest
approval rating since Franklin Roosevelt’s
presidency.
Ray Charles
Singer Ray Charles died in June 2004.
Although Charles was blind since the age of
seven, he beat all odds and became a musical
icon. After his death, Ray, a movie about his life
was released. The movie helped people see the
events Ray Charles had to face in his life. There
is a lot of Oscar talk surrounding Jamie Foxx,
who played Ray Charles, and the movie.
Marlon Brando
Marlon Brando, one of the greatest actors ever,
died from pulmonary fibrosis (a lung disease)
at the age of 80. Marlon Brando was in such
movies as The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, and A
Street Car Named Desire. He was nominated for
eight Academy Awards.
Hurricanes
The year 2004 had one of the worst hurricane
seasons ever. Florida was destroyed by
Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne.
Many people evacuated the state and went
and stayed with family further north. The
hurricanes left many homeless.
Elections in Afghanistan
Although there were many threats, the Afghans
voted in their first democratic election. Hamid
Karzai won and now faces the job of helping to
stabilize the nation.
Christopher Reeves
Actor Christopher Reeves died of heart failure
in 2004. Reeves was probably most known for
his role as Superman. He also loved riding
horses. Many people remember the day in 1995
when Reeves was thrown from his horse. He
was paralyzed from the neck down. He started
the Christopher Reeves Paralysis Foundation
and was a huge believer in stem-cell research.
Red Sox win
For 86 years, the Red Sox watched their rivals
the New York Yankees win 26 titles. After
making a comeback, the Red Sox won the
World Series.
George Bush Re-elected
After many speeches and debates, the election
is over. President George W. Bush won his
second term as president of the United States.
Bush beat opponent Senator John Kerry with
51 percent of the popular vote. The election
also saw the highest voter turnout rate since
1968 with 60 percent.
Tsunami
One of the most tragic events that happened in
the year 2004 is the tsunami that ravaged South
East Asia. The tsunami was triggered by an
earthquake with a magnitude of 9.0, the fourth
largest since 1899. More than 150, 000 people
were killed in Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia
and India and many are still missing. Many
countries, including the United States, are
providing aid. Unfortunately, about two million
Asians will live in poverty because of this natural
disaster.
