A look back at 2004<br />

It is hard <strong>to</strong> believe that the<br />
year 2004 is over and it is on<br />
<strong>to</strong> 2005. The year went by so<br />
quickly. Here is an overview<br />
on some of the most important s<strong>to</strong>ries in news<br />
and entertainment of last year.<br />
The Passion<br />
Mel Gibson’s movie, The Passion, came out<br />
early in 2004. People had different feelings<br />
<strong>to</strong>ward this movie. Some people loved it; some<br />
thought it was <strong>to</strong>o violent, while others thought<br />
it was anti- Semitic. Although there was a lot of<br />
controversy surrounding this movie, The Passion<br />
became the highest grossing rated R film ever.<br />
Former President Ronald Reagan Dies<br />
The 40th President, Ronald Reagan died June<br />
5 at the age of 93. For many weeks there were<br />
services and tributes <strong>to</strong> Reagan shown on<br />
television. In 1989, Reagan had the highest<br />
approval rating since Franklin Roosevelt’s<br />
presidency.<br />
Ray Charles<br />
Singer Ray Charles died in June 2004.<br />
Although Charles was blind since the age of<br />
seven, he beat all odds and became a musical<br />
icon. After his death, Ray, a movie about his life<br />
was released. The movie helped people see the<br />
events Ray Charles had <strong>to</strong> face in his life. There<br />
is a lot of Oscar talk surrounding Jamie Foxx,<br />
who played Ray Charles, and the movie.<br />
Marlon Brando<br />
Marlon Brando, one of the greatest ac<strong>to</strong>rs ever,<br />
died from pulmonary fibrosis (a lung disease)<br />
at the age of 80. Marlon Brando was in such<br />
movies as The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, and A<br />
<strong>St</strong>reet Car Named Desire. He was nominated for<br />
eight Academy Awards.<br />
Hurricanes<br />
The year 2004 had one of the worst hurricane<br />
seasons ever. Florida was destroyed by<br />
Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne.<br />
Many people evacuated the state and went<br />
and stayed with family further north. The<br />
hurricanes left many homeless.<br />
Elections in Afghanistan<br />
Although there were many threats, the Afghans<br />
voted in their first democratic election. Hamid<br />
Karzai won and now faces the job of helping <strong>to</strong><br />
stabilize the nation.<br />
Chris<strong>to</strong>pher Reeves<br />
Ac<strong>to</strong>r Chris<strong>to</strong>pher Reeves died of heart failure<br />
in 2004. Reeves was probably most known for<br />
his role as Superman. He also loved riding<br />
horses. Many people remember the day in 1995<br />
when Reeves was thrown from his horse. He<br />
was paralyzed from the neck down. He started<br />
the Chris<strong>to</strong>pher Reeves Paralysis Foundation<br />
and was a huge believer in stem-cell research.<br />
Red Sox win<br />
For 86 years, the Red Sox watched their rivals<br />
the New York Yankees win 26 titles. After<br />
making a comeback, the Red Sox won the<br />
World Series.<br />
George Bush Re-elected<br />
After many speeches and debates, the election<br />
is over. President George W. Bush won his<br />
second term as president of the United <strong>St</strong>ates.<br />
Bush beat opponent Sena<strong>to</strong>r John Kerry with<br />
51 percent of the popular vote. The election<br />
also saw the highest voter turnout rate since<br />
1968 with 60 percent.<br />
Tsunami<br />
One of the most tragic events that happened in<br />
the year 2004 is the <strong>tsunami</strong> that ravaged South<br />
East Asia. The <strong>tsunami</strong> was triggered by an<br />
earthquake with a magnitude of 9.0, the fourth<br />
largest since 1899. More than 150, 000 people<br />
were killed in Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia<br />
and India and many are still missing. Many<br />
countries, including the United <strong>St</strong>ates, are<br />
providing aid. Unfortunately, about two million<br />
Asians will live in poverty because of this natural<br />
disaster.<br />
