Taking the initiative and seizing the moment have never been a problem with the TCS
people. The TCS Management has been strategizing for over two years a sustainable
path to greater growth and prosperity through franchising. Dubai based Franchise
Development Services, was tasked with setting the process in motion in late 2005 in
line with TCS Chairman Mr. Khalid Awan’s vision of expanding the TCS Network. This
would see TCS grow from 204 locations in Pakistan to 500 locations and beyond.

My sincere best wishes to our readership, and I hope businesses are coping well
in these very dynamic and challenging times, made more so by the turmoil in
Northern Pakistan that has resulted in an unprecedented displacement of human
population. I have directed the TCS people to spare no effort in providing relief
to the internally displaced. TCS embodies the same bedrock principles which
have enabled us to serve you with a commitment that has won your trust over
the last 25 years.
It gives me great pleasure to announce the elevation of Mr Saqib Hamdani to the
position of Chief Executive Officer of TCS Private Ltd. This appointment is in
recognition of his outstanding performance as Chief Operating Officer for the past
5 years.

My sincere thanks to Mr. Jamil Janjua for his tireless services that have seen
TCS grow under his watch as CEO and Group CEO. Jamil is now taking a well
earned retirement, but only in the formal sense of the word, having reached that
magic number when one traditionally takes retirement. However, given his
enormous store of experience and business acumen, as also his youthful vitality,
JJ will continue to engage with TCS as a Consultant, a priceless resource in
these very challenging times. So even as I wish him a fond farewell, let me extend
to him a hearty welcome back! and may we continue to harmonize together in
the exploring of new horizons for many more years to come.
In the midst of a global recession, we at TCS are redoubling our efforts and taking
stock of our processes with a view to enhancing efficiencies across the board in
the service of our valued customers. In this connection we have introduced
franchising to our business model, and encouraged our employees with a flair
for business to set up their own shop under our TCS colours. Our human resource
is what will make the difference and decide on the level of our success, as indeed
it has in the past. In this Issue of CONNECT we have celebrated the TCS people,
and their efforts that have won us kudos from our valued customers.

It is a great, albeit somber pleasure
being here with you again with our
special Silver Jubilee issue in these
troubled times.
My sincere thanks to our valued customers, who have been
very generous in their applause for the TCS effort, and we
carry their encouraging feedback in a special section. In the
cover story we raise the curtain on our band of intrapreneurs
turned entrepreneurs as TCS revisits its business model and
explores further its franchise options. We take a fond trip down
memory lane and revisit the Banking Contract that really put
the whiz in TCS!
I would like to thank Mr. Khalid Awan for his very kind words,
and wish to express my deep gratitude for the opportunities
that he has made available for me through TCS, and the
many learnings and wisdoms that he has imparted over the
years of our association.
I look forward to keeping my boots on in my post retirement
period, and continuing to be of service to our most valued

EDITORIAL
I would like to offer my sincere congratulations to
TCS on attaining its Silver Jubilee, a considerable
achievement for a Pakistani enterprise given the
rough and tumble of our operating environment. It
comes at a time of financial turmoil in the world.
TCS has weathered many a storm in its young
history, relishing the challenges that have come its
way, and rising to the occasion each time. We have
learnt to seek the silver lining and find opportunity
in adversity. These are testing times, possibly as
never before, and it will take the combined resolve
of the TCS people to face and overcome the current
economic impasse. But overcome we shall, of that
there is no doubt, and in doing so we would have
made our contribution to the economic well being
of the country at large.
It continues to be a rare privilege and pleasure
putting CONNECT together for TCS and its valued
readership. The seriousness with which TCS has
taken this corporate publication has enabled me to
earn a respectable living as a researcher and writer,
and for this I shall be forever grateful. My thanks to
all the wonderful people whose input has made
CONNECT the success that it has become.

by those who would force their irrationality upon civil society through
brute force.
As a service provider to civil society, TCS too has borne part of the

required until matters return to normal.

Subject: Subsistence to Company Employees of Swat, Matta, Dargai and
Timergara
This morning I received a call from CEO Mr. Saqib Hamdani who
expressed his grief over the National Calamity in NWFP in which
heavy exodus from Swat and adjoining areas took place involving
over a million persons, being termed as the largest ever
displacement in the world within the short timeframe concerned.
TCS staff of Swat, Matta, Dargai and Timergara Branches also
had to leave their homes in search of safety for their families.
In these testing times, CEO Mr. Saqib Hamdani not only has shown
his personal resolve to help out the needy displaced people but
at the same time asked me to communicate the Company’s
commitment to our affected staff. He has very generously
announced a sum of Rs. 10,000/- per month per family as
subsistence allowance till such time as they return to their homes.
In addition to the subsistence allowance the families requiring
medical care will also be provided the same from the Company’s
side.

Arif Kamal
joined TCS
as a Banking
Courier in
1986, and after
riding a motorbike for the last 22
years he discovered there is a
direct co-relationship between the
age and the waist (Umar and
Kamar)! In short, he began finding
the need to throttle back a bit and
take life easy. Arif says he had
never imagined that one day he
would be running his own
business, and when the idea was
broached to him by the TCS
Management he was startled and
entirely unsure how he would
handle the transition from
employee to employer. He says
that he is now beginning to find
his feet, and for the last six months
since acquiring the franchise his
entire focus has been on
marketing. “Business has
exceeded expectations!” says Arif,
who has been blessed with three
grown up sons, two of whom are
engineers with jobs, and the
youngest is in college intent upon
becoming an engineer as well.
Khursheed
Ahmed
Khan
obtained his
TCS franchise in
2003, and he is an
aviation veteran with time spent
as Duty Station Manager with Aero
Asia and General Manager
Operations with Safe Air. His own
company Track Triangle
Aviation Services Pvt Ltd. does
clearing, forwarding, technical
aircraft landing permissions, and
ground handling services for
aircraft both passenger and cargo.
As Director Operations Al Meeqat
International Travel and Tours Pvt
Ltd he services the Hajj and
Umrah traveler, and as sole
proprietor Maria Enterprises he
operates the TCS franchise. Talk
about entrepreneurship and a very
full plate! Khursheed is passionate
about cricket, having played the
game as an all-rounder.
Asif Najam
has come to
the TCS
Franchise the
hard way. He
joined TCS in 1985
as a Courier, and 23 years later
had risen to Business
Development Manager Corporate
Sales. In January 2008 Asif
succumbed to the entrepreneur
that had lurked in him his whole
life, took retirement from TCS, and
invested in catering business intent
upon becoming a late blooming
millionaire. However, there is many
a slip between the cup and the lip,
a lesson that Asif learnt the hard
way after his partners and
associates had cooked his goose
nice and proper. “One only learns
the depth of a well after
descending into it,” says Asif
philosophically. His old employers
came to his rescue upon hearing
of his misadventures, and the TCS
Management suggested he take
on a franchise and take further
the business that he already knew
so well rather than venture into
uncharted waters this late in life.
Asif is blessed with four daughters
and one son. He is very fond of
traveling and has toured the length
and breadth of Pakistan.
Nadeem Alvi
has been in
this line of
work for 11
years, having
joined TCS in 1990
as Sales Executive. In July 2008
he gave up his job as Business
Development Manager TCS
Logistics to take up the Franchise
offer. Married with three kids
(boys), moving from employee to
self-employed is a big step in
Nadeem’s life. “Raising a family
on a salary in these inflationary
times is at best an uphill task”,
says Nadeem. “As a franchisee
this is my own business, and it will
prosper in direct proportion to the
effort that I put into it.” His gameplan
is to grow the Express Center
and take it to the next level and
beyond in terms of profitability.
Rashid
Ahmed
joined TCS in
1991 as
Operations
Assistant, and was
working in the Customers Services
department when he resigned six
months ago to set up his own TCS
Franchise. “I am enjoying myself
a lot!” says Rashid.

“The activity is increasing, and my
good relations with the old
customers are proving extremely
useful.” There was initially the fear
of the unknown, he says, but his
good knowledge of the business
has stood him in good stead, and
he would like to acquire a second
franchise in the next year. “One
cant depend upon walk-in
customers, and one needs to get
out and acquire business from
people. There are five hospitals,
and plenty of schools and colleges
in my territory, and business
activity increases when operating
one’s own business. I used to work
before as well, but the passion as
self-employed goes far beyond
that” says Rashid who has one
daughter and lives in a joint family
with his mother, father, four
brothers and three sisters. He is
found of deep sea fishing and goes
off whenever he can with his
friends in a launch.
Zafar
Masood
joined TCS in
1993 as
Security Officer
in Grade 4 and took
retirement in October 2008 as
Retail Sales Executive. In between
he pursued his photography hobby
by doing assignments for the TCS
internal customer publication
Network News. Last year Zafar
suffered a heart attack and found
it difficult to perform the twelve
hours stints required of him earlier.
The TCS Management offered him
a franchise, and it has turned out
to be just what the doctor ordered!
“Financially this is much better
than my previous salaried job, and
a whole lot less demanding since
I am now my own boss! Zafar’s
ambition is to make the Express
Center more and more profitable,
and is full of ideas on how to set
about doing so.
He continues with his photography
hobby, and enjoys cooking and
playing cricket, and is very upset
about the terrorism related
negative image that Pakistan has
acquired that has dispatched its
cricket tourism sector for a huge
six clear out of the stadium.
Amir Nazar
joined TCS in
1993 as a
Courier, a
position in which
he retired in 2006 to
become a TCS Franchise
operator. “This is a great earning
opportunity and it saves me a lot
of time as well,” says Amir whose
territory covers almost seventy
percent of the Korangi Industrial
Area, extending from Aventis
Chowrangi to Murtaza Chowrangi.
His target is to begin a second
franchise in the next three to five
years. “This line of work requires
good public relations skills.
Working for myself I now realize
that the time I spend with the
customer is actually my investment
in the business because he is
going to come back to me every
time,” explains Amir, saying that
these are things one does not
always realize when working in
an employed capacity. “The
passion is very important and it
results in a whole lot of purpose
that then translates into profits.”
Amir is very happy with the way
cricket is turning out and is sure
that Pakistan is going to emerge
as the most sought after team in
the world. “A truly globe-trotting
team that only plays overseas per
force of circumstances at home.
I am sure Mr. Jinnah would have
‘approved’, and he would surely
have developed a cricket ground
behind his Ziarat residence!” says
Amir tongue-in-cheek.
Arshi Saleem
started her
TCS
Franchise on
the 1st of
October 2008
having joined the company on the
1st of February 2004 as Retail
Sales Officer. In the short period
that her franchise has been in
operation she has doubled the
sales, and is intent upon further
improving the targets given to her
by TCS. Arshi is in her elements
running her own business which
she does with the help of her two
brothers. The territory that she is
servicing is known to her
intimately, being the
neighbourhood that she has spent
the last 24 years of her life in.
Alongside she is studying for her
Master’s degree in Islamic History.
“The business is my family’s bread
and butter, and we put in a lot of
hard work into it with the
expectation that it will grow and
flourish and enable for us a better
standard of living,” says Arshi for
whom her academic pursuits
provide her with a well earned
relief from the drudgery of work
while developing her mental
horizons.
Javaid Hyder
has been with
TCS since the
19th of
September
1994, having joined
as Retail Sales Assistant. He
resigned from the Company in
March 2008 and started the
Franchise on the 22nd of April of
the same year. The return on his
investment is yet to happen, he
says, but he is very hopeful of the
years ahead.

“Business in general has taken
a beating with the global
economic recession and the
many troubles that Pakistan has
faced in recent years,” says
Javaid, who feels that this is the
time to redouble one’s efforts
and position oneself for when
the business activity begins to
pick up. He has found himself in
pioneering roles with TCS having
opened its branches in Tauheed
Commercial and Shamsheer
Commercial. The ten years that
he spent at the Clifton Center in
SASI Arcade were very
educative, he says, and feels
highly indebted to TCS from
whom he has learnt a lot. He
would like to see his business
progress and is looking forward
to acquiring a second TCS
franchise in the not too distant
future. Javaid is saddened by
the turn for the worse that cricket
matters have taken in Pakistan,
and feels that people are entitled
to some healthy entertainment
in their lives.
Tariq Yousaf joined TCS in 1986 as a Courier, and then
transferred out to the TCS sponsored Sohni Express
as Station Controller, rejoining TCS as Sales Officer in
1990. He left TCS to set up his own Franchise in August
2008 while serving the Company as Senior Sales Manager.
“While performing a job one is always a bit fearful about starting
a business,” says Tariq, the only franchisee to be running two outlets. “But
when the TCS Management made the offer to me it was too good to resist,
specially since it concerned an area that I was well familiar with. My total
concentration is on making the franchise a success, and in this I follow Mr.
Jinnah’s exhortation of work, work, and more work!” Tariq says he has no
time for rest and recreation given the state of the economy and the call to
action stations across the board. However, Tariq would do well to remember
that all work and no play make Jack a dull boy. But Tariq’s no Jack! And he
certainly ain’t no boy!
Rana Atique joined TCS in 1990 as Recovery Officer,
and resigned his job in 2007 as Recovery Manager. It
has been seven months since he opened the Franchise,
and he says it is doing well and improving every day. “It
is not such a big deal, and I could easily manage another
four such centers!” says Rana, exuding a welcome bravado
in these somewhat depressed times. “It is a neat and clean business with
little or no risk involved.” Rana is married with five daughters and one son,
and also involved in the property business.

Every year the rank and file at TCS gets invited to
share with the CONNECT readership something
extraordinary that might have transpired during the
course of their daily routines. In the life of a courier
no two days are the same, with every day bringing
with it a fresh set of challenges. What does remain
the same, however, is the courier’s commitment to
his unwritten, self-governed mandate that puts the
‘Customer and Company above Self’ in a corporate
culture that celebrates the TCS Core Values of
Quality; Profitability through Efficiency; Justice; Ethical
Behavior; and Exemplary Conduct. These Core
Values, as defined by the TCS Chairman Mr. Khalid
Awan, have shaped an organization that has
withstood the test of time, and grown from strength
to strength in its pursuit of customer satisfaction.
This time we celebrate Ten Tales of extraordinary
courage and commitment, and are sure that there
are many others that have gone unreported out of
either modesty, or because the TCS Family has
grown so used to traveling the extra mile in the
service of the customer that it does not accord any
special significance to such acts. The stories
presented below have been translated and edited
by Mr. Shafique Shah, the Editor of TCS Network
News and TCS QuickCom, with their synopsis
provided by Adil Ahmad, Editor TCS Connect.
The Ten Tales are split equally into the Winners and
Runners-up categories. The winning filings were
from Muhammad Kaleem (Operations Manager, Shift
A General, Karachi), Ghulam Akbar (Operations
Officer, Shift A General, Karachi), Zahid Iqbal
(Administration Officer, Multan), Manzoor Abro (Team
Leader Field Operations, Karachi), M. Sohail
(Operations Assistant, Karachi), Siraj (Business
Manager, Mardan), and Tariq Khan (Operations
Assistant, Mardan). These are carried below.
The five runners-up comprised of Muhammad
Mumtaz (Area Operations Manager,Rawalpindi), M.
Atif Minhaj Qasmi (Senior Sales Executive INTIANA,
Karachi), Muhammad Flower Iqbal
(In-Charge Debriefing, Multan), Maqbool Ahmed
(Accounts Officer, Lahore), and Muhammad Amir
(Area Accountant, Peshawar). Their stories have
been carried internally in QuickCom.

CONDUCTING BUSINESS UNDER FIRE
Muhammad Kaleem and Ghulam Akbar filed a joint submission
that dealt with the conduct of business under fire in the megacity
of Karachi gone berserk with pain, fear and rage. The 28th
of December 2007 saw the country come to a screeching,
violent halt. Benazir Bhutto was no more, felled by an assassin’s
bullet. From the Khyber to the Arabian Sea, for three days
people lost their minds and vent their anger and anguish in
unprecedented fearsome fashion. For three continuous days
and nights Muhammad Kaleem and
Ghulam Akbar manned the action
stations on empty stomachs,
ensuring as best as they could the
continuity of business at TCS. In a
bizarre sort of way they had prepared
for this drill just six months before,
when the city was plunged into chaos
and confusion, murder and mayhem
on the 12th day of May 2007, with
riots, arson and killings at several
centrally-located places, terrorizing
the whole city. TCS couriers bravely
weathered the life threatening
situation, and made as many
deliveries and pickups as were
possible. Providing them with closein
support were Muhammad Kaleem
and Ghulam Akbar who stayed back
for two days and nights working
feverishly to keep things going on
empty stomachs and hearts full of
prayers that the madness would
relent and better sense would prevail.
COOL & COURAGEOUS
Zahid Iqbal was on duty at Faisalabad’s Circular Road Express
Centre the day Mohatrama Benzair Bhutto joined the hallowed
ranks of the Shaheeds. There was sporadic violence and high
tension prevailed. Zahid Iqbal had a crisis on his hands with
two hysterical ladies, an elderly gent
not in the best of health, a teenager
desperately trying to put on a brave
face, and an injured man who had
crashed through the glass door of
the Express Center while seeking
refuge from the street violence
outside. Zahid Iqbal kept his cool
and courage and managed the
situation to the satisfaction of all
concerned, including the TCS Area
Office which received its material
bag weighing over 16 kilos, delivered
on foot.

AGAINST ALL ODDS
M. Sohail found himself in the thick of things, playing hide
and seek with rioters on Karachi roads the day following
Benazir Bhutto’s assassination. As per routine he had
embarked on pickups from Guru Mandir, Orangi and Tariq
Road Express Centres. By dusk he arrived at Banaras
where several vehicles were on fire with a crowd of antisocial
elements looting innocent people and damaging
private property. Then suddenly came the deafening sound
of gun fire and a big sharp-edged rock hit M. Sohail’s right
hand which began bleeding. They fled through narrow
streets and finally reached Habib Bank Chowrangi where,
like all other places, angry mobs were on the rampage. A
police van with armed guards appeared to M. Sohail’s relief,
and zigzagging through the side lanes they finally reached
Golimar. Gulshan Hub was totally under control of the
rioters who were damaging, destroying and setting on fire
private and government property. The pain in his injured
hand had unbearably increased and required immediate
bandaging. After what seemed
an eternity they finally reached
the Gulshan Hub and M. Sohail
got down from the van and rushed
towards the hub holding the bags
of material that he had collected.
He then gathered the staff and
escorted them to the van. A battle
had finally been won and he was
happy to have delivered the
goods. However, it was a
nightmare that is likely to haunt
him all his life.
NEVER ON A SUNDAY!
Manzoor Abro reports on how his plans for a restful Sunday
with the family got turned upside down when he decided to
drop in at the office very briefly to check up on a pending
matter. Just his luck that a very agitated customer from
Islamabad was on the phone with the officer on duty, insisting
on speaking with the top management. For a moment there
Manzoor Abro was tempted to duck the issue and carry on
with his weekend picnic plans. But like always the family
had to take a back seat, and he
volunteered to help resolve the
problem, a very knotty problem
that involved a passport and airline
ticket that was two days behind
scheduled delivery. It took the rest
of the Sunday and persistent
follow-up to trace the missing
documents, and it was close to
nightfall when they were finally
delivered and the customer’s
agitation turned into gratitude.

Manzoor Abro
CASE OF THE TWO SHAHJEES
Siraj and Tariq Khan got into a most unusual tangle with
two consignees by the same name of Syed Munawwar Ali
Shah, both collectors of antiques, and both expecting a
shipment from their dealer! Talk about co-incidents, and this
absolutely had to be the mother of all co-incidents! Weighing
8.5 kgs., the consignment was received at Mardan from
Lahore with insufficient address. A Mr. Humayoon arrived
posing as the consignee's driver and insisted on receiving
the shipment. On production of his CNIC the consignment
was handed over to him. The next day Syed Munawwar Ali
Shah turned up to collect his shipment! The consignee was
flabbergasted and said he had no driver by the name of
Humayoon. The declaration made by the consignee threw
Siraj and Tariq into a quandary and they stood there
dumbfounded. The consignee hit the roof, and said the
shipment contained a 300-year old valuable piece of antique,
originally from Indonesia, that had cost him some 15 lakhs
of rupees, and threatened to sue the Company for damages.

photograph were obtained, some
20 miles off Mardan City in a
village known as Jamal Garhi but

contacted on the phone accepted
having received the consignment
and admitted that it was an error,
a rare one at that, since he too
was expecting a similar
consignment! The actual
consignee Syed Munawwar Ali
Shah was delighted to say the
least upon receiving his antique,
and profusely thanked and
congratulated TCS for promptly
tracing the consignment.

on the 4th of May 1983, it gave

in 1985 when TCS signed up with
the Pakistan Banking Council to
expedite the clearance of outstation
cheques, and reduce the
processing time from three weeks
to seventy-two hours. The enormity
of what we accomplished at TCS
by the successful execution of that

Joseph
joined DHL on
October 17,
1982 and
then
transferred to
TCS upon
its inception,
a fact that
makes him a proud member of
the senior employees club! He was
born on the 18th of January, 1963 in
Karachi, and is married with three sons
and a daughter. Bruce Willis and
Stephen Segal are his favourite movie
stars, and he cites Mercury Rising, Die
Hard, Black, and Koi Mill Gaya
(featuring Bruce Willis?) as his favourite
movies. Athletics, basketball, football,
and swimming have been part of
Godfrey’s action in life. Godfrey’s
favourite food is Chinese fusion, a term
that bears further explaining.
If not TCS, which other career would
Godfrey have liked to pursue? “I would
have liked to utilize my skills by
devoting my energies towards the uplift
of Special Children and contribute
towards providing a better quality of
life for the mentally and physically
challenged,” says he.
Mirza Iqbal
Baig joined
TCS on the 6th
of August,
1985 as a
banking
courier, and
was born in
Karachi on
the 15th of
January, 1965. His father worked as
Assistant General Manager for May &
Baker pharmaceutical company, and
he is one of five sisters and two
brothers. Iqbal is married with two sons
(Suffiyan and Samad) and daughter
Misbah who is a budding artist and the
recipient of a TCS award in 2002.
Iqbal has played cricket and hockey,
likes to watch the National Geographic
channel, has no preferences in movies
or actors, and his favourite food
comprises of yellow Lentil (Daal) eaten
with plain rice, potato cutlets and green
salad.
Mohammad
Yousuf
(Bhai) was
born on the 13th
of April 1958 in
SUKKUR, and
is one of four
brothers and
five sisters.
Prior to joining TCS he
was a hand crafted carpet designer,
and cites TCS as his first and last job.
He wove a carpet with the TCS mascot
Speedy and presented it to the
Chairman TCS Mr. Khalid Awan in the
midst of much praise.
The TCS Management has selected
Yousuf several times to officiate as
Area Manager Karachi, as well as
officiating Manager Network of
Pakistan. He is presently Manager
Airport Operation with TCS Express
World Wide L.L.C in Dubai. Married
with five daughters and one son-inlaw,
Yousuf favours seafood, cites
Mohammad Ali as his favourite actor,
and the Dawn of Islam as his favourite
movie. He is partial to Cricket, and
amongst his mentors at TCS he cites
Qamar Zaidi, Moin Malik, Adil Badshah,
Naveed Awan, Azeem, Imran Aslam,
and Jamil Ahmed.
Syed
Naushad
Haider
joined TCS as
a sales officer
in year 1988,
and was born in
Sukkur on the
10th of March
1962. His late father
worked for EXXON in Daharki, and he
has two brothers and a sister. Naushad
has been very active on the sports
field, and has played Squash and
Table-tennis professionally, with an
interest in Hockey, Baseball,
Badminton and Swimming.
Posted in Dubai for the last 10 years,
Naushad is currently responsible for
the Wholesale business in the UAE.
Had he not joined TCS Naushad would
liked to have been an actor. Naushad’s
favourite food includes Chinese and
vegetable dishes prepared by his wife.
Amongst his favourite actors are
Naseeruddin Shah, Amitabh Bachan,
and Shan, with Khuda-Ke-Liya his
favourite movie.
Syed Imran
Ali Shah
joined DHL on
the 31st of July,
1982 and then
transferred to
TCS upon its
inception. His
father was in
Government
service, and he is one of three brothers
and two sisters. As his most
memorable moment he cites the day
in 1983 when the Chairman TCS Mr.

“At that time I was a Courier Officer, and it became the most
important day of my professional life having the Chairman
spend the whole day with me on my motorbike,” says Imran.
Imran’s favourite food is Mutton Karahi. He enjoys action
thrillers and Arnold Schwarzenegger is his favourite movie
star. His romantic streak and penchant for tragedy is reflected
in his choice of favourite movie, the Titanic. Imran was born
on the 9th of June, 1961 in Rawalpindi, and enjoys playing
cricket.
Syed Mujahid Ali joined TCS
on the 1st of December, 1984. His
father was in the Government
service, and he has one other
sibling, a sister. Born on the 11th
of January, 1960, Mujahid has
a penchant for Chinese Food
and white meat. He likes
watching old classic movies,
and his favourite movie stars include Daleep
Kumar, Shahrukh Khan, Rekha, and Shlpa Shetty. Mujahid
has played Badminton and Hockey.
“I felt very elevated and proud to be part of such a highly
regarded service provider,” says Mujahid, citing Arif Malik
and Tahir Amin as mentors who have motivated and groomed
him.
Zafar Nawaz Awan was
born in Dera Ismail Khan on the
23rd of October 1958, and joined
TCS on the 1st of March 1984. He
is one of eight siblings, and his late
father was in Government service.
His most memorable moment was
the road accident that he was
involved in on the 23rd of September
1991 on Motorway 1 at Kundian.
Zafar not just survived the crash, but in a traumatized state
went on to complete his deliveries, an act for which he
received an appreciation letter from TCS (#PERS 15/6) for
a job well done, a document that he treasures. Zafar is fond
of cricket, cites fish as his favourite food, and likes watching
movies that feature Amitab Bachan.
His success as an
administrator is possibly due in part to the
patience of an artist, as also the artist’s attention to
detail. “I do not want to bind myself to a specific philosophy
or theme,” he says.
MAK has displayed in Islamabad’s Jharoka Art Gallery in Islamabad
alongside some formidable names like Hajra Mansur, Mansur Aye,
and Mugees Riaz who teamed up with 30 others in a group exhibition
of contemporary artists of Pakistan. On the 11th of July, 2008 two of
his paintings were put up on permanent display in the University of
Zurich’s Department of Geography in Switzerland. For the last two
years he has been working on the personality development of less
privileged children through art in Karachi’s Landhi Industrial Area.
Soon after passing out from Karachi University MAK joined TCS
(Private) Limited as Admin Officer on March 19, 1997. On June 1st,
1999 he was promoted to Assistant Manager Administration, and then
Manager Administration from July 1st, 2003. “I whole-heartedly enjoy
working in our country’s leading international courier company, and
looking after the administration of more than 350 offices across the
Network. This has broadened my understanding and knowledge in
practical terms”, says MAK.
MAK with appreciative guests at his exhibition
Muhammad Arshad Khan, popularly known as MAK,
is the Manager Administration at TCS and a gifted
artist alongside. MAK is inspired by nature and the
people around him which is why he prefers to keep
his paintings close to reality.
Reading, traveling, gardening, hiking, running and fishing comprise
MAK’s other interests.
The World Art Foundation in California (USA) has invited MAK to take
part in its grand exhibition in June this year, and sponsored his gallery
fee of $500. Ron Barsano, MAK's Internet friend since 2001, has
offered to host him at his residence during his visit.

Salman comes with a

education in Engineering
with a Masters in Business
Administration and over 7
years of diverse work
experience. He joined TCS on the 1st
of February 2006 in Sales Planning,
and after 6 months was transferred to
Mail Management Solutions (MMS) as
Sales and Marketing Manager
responsible for designing and
executing the integrated marketing
campaign among corporate customers.
“My biggest challenge was the
installation of a Print Shop and I was
also a part of the team responsible for
procuring the equipment,” says
Salman, who is now designated as
Strategic Business Head for MMS.
Before TCS Salman was in Philips
working as Marketing Manager
Consumer Channel. Prior to Philips
Salman spent one year at ABB- Asea
Brown Boweri as Project Manager, a
Switzerland based multinational in the
same line of work world wide as
Siemens. He started his career in 1999
as an Electrical Engineer in the Textiles
Industry which he says was an
experience that he will never forget.
Salman was born on the 18th June
1977 in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) where
his father worked as a banker. He did
his Bachelors in Electrical Engineering
from the NED University in Karachi,
and obtained a MBA in Marketing from
College of Business and Management
(Karachi). He is one of four brothers
and two sisters, and cites cricket,
movies, food, traveling, exploring new
places and meeting new people as his
interests outside of work.
George Clooney is Salman’s favourite
movie star and The City of Angels his
favourite movie.

Imran is the money-man at TCS,
tasked with keeping an eye on cashflows
and related matters. He was born
in Karachi on May 8th, 1969, and is
married with two sons Muhammad
Saad who is 11 years old and
Muhammad Zaid who is 7.
Imran did his M.Com from Karachi
University, and is a Fellow Member of
The Institute of Chartered Accountants
of Pakistan, a Fellow Member of The
Institute of Cost and Management
Accountants of Pakistan, an Associate
Member of The Institute of Chartered
Secretaries of Pakistan, a Certified
Internal Auditor from Institute of Internal
Auditors, USA, a Certified Information
System Auditor from the Institute of
Systems Audit and Control Association
USA, and a Certified Fraud Examiner
from the Association of Certified Fraud
Examiners USA.
His mathematical inclinations are
inherited, it appears, since Imran’s
father is a Fellow Member of The
Chartered Institute of Management
Accountants (CIMA), UK, and presently
working as a consultant in a
pharmaceutical company.
Between April 1995 and June 1996 he
served with TCS as its Chief
Accountant. During the period July
1996 to December 2004 he served as
Deputy Head Internal Audit with ABV
Rock Group KB, a Swedish
Construction Company based in Saudi
Arabia.
Imran’s work philosophy is centered
in planning his assignments accurately,
and executing them with utmost
professionalism meeting all
deliverables. He believes in team-work
and group effort, with confidence in
colleagues and sub-ordinates. Imran’s
extra-curricular interests extend to
playing cricket, reading books, surfing
the Internet, debating, and assisting
his children in their studies.

Summer Vacations Well Spent!
In keeping with a fine tradition TCS and the School of Leadership
(SoL) successfully undertook the oratorical saga of Hyde Park
Juniors (HPJ) once again this year. The orientation took place
at a five star setting in Karachi with over 175 students and their
parents and guardians in attendance.
The highlight of the evening was the interactive session on
parenting by Kamran Rizvi, Director School of Leadership.
Participants of the program engaged in learning the art of
debating and declaiming, and underwent a rigorous regime
of workshops designed to help them overcoming their fear
of public speaking.
HPJ BACKGROUNDER
Concieved by Jamil Janjua during his stint with the
British Council in Karachi many moons ago, public
speaking, debating and declaming were seen as a
route to empowering young Pakistani adults through
enhancing their powers of expression, and the
associated self-esteem and confidence. The process
was based on a series of training workshops and
competitions during the summer break, and the focus
was on girls and boys in the age bracket of 14 to 17
years. Needless to say that the program was a grand
success, and produced, amongst others, Sidra Iqbal,
who went on to becoming a HPJ trainer of great repute
and is now a celebrity television talk-show host.
Speaking on the occasion Rizwan Hafeez, TCS Vice President
Business Development & Regional Drector North, went down
memory lane, reminding the gathering of young boys and
girls that TCS had started the Hyde Park Juniors program
in 2003, as part of its 20 years celebrations, in realization
of its responsibility towards society and people
empowerment.
“This year’s program is even closer to our hearts as it
coincides with our 25 years celebrations,” said Rizwan.
“We have a business tagline which says, “Helping you
Succeed in So Many Ways” and this is also one of our
ways of demonstrating this tagline, i.e., Helping You
boys and girls to Succeed in life. I recollect another one,
which is “We Share Your Passion”. By your presence
here we understand that you have the Passion and
the desire to do something in life.” Rizwan thanked
Kamran Rizvi, Shireen Naqvi, Talha and the entire
School of Leadership team for being with TCS every
year and making HPJ a grand success.
When Jamil Janjua rejoined TCS as its CEO it was
natural that he should put HPJ as an integral part of
the Company's CSR activity. What possibly developed
as a personal passion made eminent sense at a
professional level. The newly christened TCS HPJ
took Karachi's school system by storm, and the TCS
corporate colleagues joined in with great ethusiasm
as co-sponsors. The Royal Rodale Club at Seaview
was the hub of competitive activity, while the workshops
were conducted at the School of Leadership. Citibank's
Zubyr Soomro graced as chief guest the grand finale
at the Finance and Trade Center.
Meanwhile back at the ranch the TCS Students Express
promised the kids that the TCS Speedy would get their
college applications to the UK, USA, Australia, or any
other part of the world at amazingly affordable rates.

Celebrating Pakistani Youth

Warrior Princess in the Broadcasting Business
Sidra is quick-witted, focused, and
determined to make her mark in an
open field often defined as cutthroat.
Gifted with formidable public speaking
skills that she honed with the British
Council and TCS public speaking
programs, the Hyde Park Juniors,
initiated by Jamil Janjua during his stint
at both places, Sidra has represented
Pakistan overseas on several
prestigious occasions, and delivered
an emphatic message rectifying
misperceptions of her country and
people.
Sidra’s involvement with television as
a professional pursuit is natural given
her very articulate and extrovert nature,
and the fact that she had an early
induction given her father’s presence
as a respected producer at Pakistan
Television (PTV).
After spending time hosting shows with
private channels, she seems to have
found her niche with PTV hosting
‘Corporate Coffee’. The show aims at
discussing and informing viewers about
the latest happenings on the corporate
scene in Pakistan and abroad. The
participants are drawn from both the
public and the private sector, and have
included Dr. Ishrat Hussian (Former
Governor State Bank), Mr. Tariq Ikram
(Chairman, TDAP), Barrister Shahida
Jamil, Mr. Abdullah Yusuf (Chairman,
FBR), Mr. Shamim Ahmed Shamsi
(President KCCI), Mr. Aqeel Karim
Dhedhi (AKD Group), Mr. Arif Habib
(Arif Habib Securities), Mr. Rafiq
Rangoonwala (Cupola Group), and
Ms. Zainab Ansari (Xenith PR) to name
just a few.
The issues that Sidra has on the front
burner include in-depth analysis of the

Since April of this year Sidra has been

Aired once a week on Wednesdays,
KIVA is into its third season.
Sidra Iqbal works as Vice President
for Public Relations at Ogilvy & Mather
Pakistan in Karachi, and is part of that
elite group of young Pakistani
executives competent to make a mark
on the world stage. “Advertising is not
a 9-to-5 job,” says Sidra, who often
puts in 15 hours work days. Burnout
is an occupational hazard, and Sidra
is planning a six weeks sabbatical in
England, attending workshops on
Public Relations and Media practices.

Adding value to the spirit of enterprise
Mohammad Arif is leading a fine team at OCTARA as its
Business Head, and what started as a CSR initiative on
the 20th anniversary of TCS has developed into a full
fledged business concern as TCS celebrates its Silver
