California. Jack Lowe is superintendent<br />

and he is directing the purchase of food<br />

supplies for the entire winter as it is an~<br />

ticipated that the mine will he snowed in<br />

for as long as five months. A shovel is<br />

being moved in over a new road recently<br />

built to the property and will be used in<br />

dredging the bar. It is believed that the<br />

mine will be operated for from 10 to 15<br />

years. A camp for 30 men will be built<br />

at Marble Cone.<br />

C. A. Lindsay and associates have acuuired<br />

from H. D. Look the Argentine<br />

mine near the head of Squirrel Creek near<br />

Quincy, California, involving a total of 122<br />

acres. The new operators propose to install<br />

a 150-ton mill if sufficient ore can<br />

be developed to warrant such a step. The<br />

mine was formerly known as the Gold<br />

Leaf.<br />

H. F. McCan and Nevada associates have<br />

acquired a lease and option on 39 claims<br />

of the Southern California Gold Mines,<br />

Ltd., located north of Lucerne Valley, California,<br />

between Kane Springs. and the Ord<br />

Mountains. The lease was secured from<br />

L. J. Bonnett, 656 Thirteenth Street, San<br />

Bernardino, California, and Stephen Turick.<br />

Values are in gold and copper.<br />

The Union Consolidated Mining Company.<br />

155 Montgomery Street, San Francisco,<br />

California, has levied an assessment<br />

of 2 cents per share on its outstanding<br />

stock, payable immediately. The company<br />

owns the Oro y Plata mine at Murphy,<br />

California. J. C. Scoles is president and<br />

general manager.<br />

A production of $175,000 over a sixmonth<br />

period is reported by the Cherokee<br />

mine, Greenville, California, owned by Alfred<br />

L. Merritt, 200 Bush Street, San<br />

Francisco. The ore now runs $25 to $40,<br />

according to reports. An extensive development<br />

program is in progress and two<br />

veins are being developed. Frank Humphrey,<br />

Box 215, Greenville, is general man~<br />

ager.<br />

Reopening of the Kleinsurge chrome<br />

mine and other chrome and manganese<br />

properties near Red Bluff, California, is<br />

reported to he planned for the near future.<br />

The Kleinsurge was operated in<br />

1918 and is said to have produced a considerable<br />

amount of fairly high-grade<br />

chrome.<br />

The United States Vanadium Corporation,<br />

Bishop, California, has rec-ently completed<br />

its new laboratory and processing<br />

plant on Pine Creek. Blair Burwell is<br />

~eneral superintendent for the corporation;<br />

M. N. Shaw is superintendent of the<br />

Pine Creek Unit; K. G. Link is mine superintendent<br />

under Shaw; and J. V. Galloway<br />

An extensive construction program i3<br />

under way at the Surcease mine 20 miles<br />

northeast of Oroville, California, including<br />

the enlarging of the mill capacity, building<br />

of new roads, and increasing the water<br />

supply. The present mill-capacity of 75<br />

tons will be stepped up to 120 tons; twelve<br />

thousand feet of four-inch pipe line to<br />

Fraser Creek are being laid to obtain more<br />

water; the 75 men now employed will be<br />

increased to 100. About 110 men are<br />

working during the period of construction.<br />

The increased tonnage of the mill will<br />

bring about lower operating costs, and<br />

lower grades of ore can be treated profitably.<br />

A good-sized pocket of gold ore has beel1<br />

discovered in the Independent mine near<br />

El Dorado, California, according to reports.<br />

The property has been a producer of pockets<br />

of considerable size for some time. Tht<br />

extent of the present discovery is not yet<br />

known, but it was found at greater depth<br />

than any previous pocket. Madre de Oro<br />

Gold Mines, Inc., Forest Riley, president,<br />

Corcoran, California) operates the Ind('­<br />

pendent, Starlight, and Church mines, all<br />

in El Dorado County. William J. Loring,<br />

El Dorado, is consulting engineer and general<br />

manager.<br />

The Jack Ranch tungsten mine neal'<br />

Porterville, California, is operating at full<br />

capacity since replacing of the mining machinery<br />
