Tennessee Tech University is one of 45 institutions in the Tennessee Board of Regents, the sixth largest system of higher education in the nation. The TBR governs six universities, 13 two-year colleges, and 26 area technology centers. TBR enrolls more than 180,000 students in 90 of Tennessee’s 96 counties. As I complete my first year here at Tennessee Tech, I look back on a year of unprecedented challenge for the nation, the State of Tennessee, and TTU. Here in the College of Business we have suffered the loss through the retirement of several talented faculty members, who, due to budget cuts, will not be replaced, and we have streamlined our processes elsewhere. These changes have forced us to review the very fundamentals of the educational process, such as class size and how courses are taught. It is an easy time to feel down. However, it is also a time to look at our progress in accomplishing our mission of “…provid(ing) an educational foundation that prepares our students to become successful ethical business leaders.” We have truly excellent programs here in the College of Business. We produce award-winning students. We have a very strong faculty who teach a world-class curriculum. We are one of a handful of Colleges of Business that are fully accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. We achieved accreditation by the Network of International Business Schools, only the second American College of Business to be so honored. The College was included in Princeton Review’s 296 Best Business Schools. We are able to provide significant financial support to more students than any other college on campus. Some of these achievements are covered more fully in this Annual Report. Looking to the future, a number of changes are in store for Johnson Hall. Supported by several generous alumni contributions, the new Heidtke Trading room, pictured on the front cover and scheduled for completion later this fall, will provide a state-of-the-art facility for our students to experience the environment of a Wall Street trading room, and will provide research capabilities for all of our students. In the planning stages are technological and cosmetic updates to other classrooms, which are also supported by private contributions of friends and alumni of the College of Business. A part of our efforts to “Keep the Promise” made to Dean Johnson, our goal is to provide a professional business facility and atmosphere for our students as they prepare for careers in the profession of business. As we move forward, we will continue to provide the excellence in education that our students and their families expect from us, and that we expect of ourselves. As the State of Tennessee continues to struggle with budgetary issues, our future will be more and more dependant upon private support from our alumni and friends. The changes sweeping through the economy will not change our mission, but we will have to provide our own means to accomplish it. As we navigate the changing economic climate, we are confident that, with the help of our students, faculty, alumni, and friends, we will emerge a stronger and more effective College of Business. I invite you to spend some time reading about what has been accomplished in a very challenging environment, and imagining what the future holds.
