The overriding theme of this Year in Review is globalization. A key part of our mission is to educate our
students to be leaders and entrepreneurs in a global, fast-changing, and diverse economy. The first five stories in the
Review provide examples of the importance that globalization has on all aspects of the college. We hope to infect
our students with the understanding that no one has a monopoly on the right answers or good ideas. It is important
to recognize our differences, but it may be just as essential to focus on what we have in common to make real
progress. Our theme, “Expanding Our Horizons,” is further enhanced by the recognition that we now have 17
countries represented by students in our undergraduate and MBA programs.
As we look back over the past year and consider the accomplishments of our students, faculty, staff, and alumni,
we are reminded that truly great success comes from working together to achieve our goals. Our progress during
2004-05 was remarkable. We launched new programs, expanded our outreach efforts, hired superb new faculty, and
increased our fund-raising efforts to record levels.
We celebrate our accomplishments, but also challenge ourselves to compete effectively in our marketplace and
distinguish the college. Looking to the future, we need to leverage our strengths in continuing the following
initiatives:
• Positioning our curricula to meet specific needs and be a dominant player in our chosen market niches.
• Providing an exceptional learning environment by continuing the Johnson Hall renovation effort.
• Involving our alumni and friends in shaping the future of our college by their inspiration, contacts, and resources.
I invite you to read our 2004-05 Year in Review. In these pages, we hope we have provided a glimpse of the
energy and excitement we feel at the college — your college! Near the end of this report, we have provided the
names of our benefactors whose support has made a difference this past year. For those whose names are included, I
would like to thank you for your support and trust. Please know that you are making at tremendous impact on the
lives of our students, faculty, and staff through your gifts.
Best regards,
Our College’s First Fulbright Scholar!
by Melissa Scott
Dr. Bonita Barger, Associate Professor of Management,
is an outstanding representative of the quality
faculty in Tech’s College of Business. She has been
at the forefront of the distance-education movement, winning
a Tennessee Board of Regents Innovation Award in
2002 for best practices in distance learning environments.
She also received the 2004-05 University Overall Teaching
Award based on her creative and innovative classroom
approaches.
Dr. Barger has presented her research at international
conferences and now has received a grant from the
prestigious U. S. Fulbright Scholar Program to spend the
2005-06 academic year in the Baltic state of Lithuania. For
the assignment, Barger will present a series of lectures about
international management that creates a technological
collaboration between students at TTU and Lithuania’s ISM
University of Management and Economics, allowing both to
work together in virtual, online teams.
This interest in more global thinking is not a new
venture for Dr. Barger. She has been adding value to the
world for more than twenty-five years. She was a Peace Corps
volunteer who assisted poverty-stricken women in El
Salvador just prior to the Central American country’s
revolution in 1980, and for eight years she served as a
consultant to the organization, helping to provide training
and preparation for its volunteers. Dr. Barger worked in
Japan, China, and India setting up human resource
management processes for newly formed joint ventures. In
France, England, Australia, and Singapore, she worked on
both improving organizations and developing and training
staff. She has also traveled to Belgium, Germany, Italy, and
South and Central America.
“I was never the same after my Peace Corps experience.
It created a desire in me to continue giving back to the world
community, and I haven’t been able to get that idea out of
my blood since,” she said. “I am following my passions ...I
ask my students to stretch, support and connect, and I
consistently try to do it myself.”
FLYING DOWN TO RIO
...Or How I Spent My Winter Break
by Dr. Bob Wood
Nineteen students and three faculty members
participated in our first “Study Abroad” class during
winter break. The class, developed by Drs. Tor
Guimaraes, Mark Stephens, and Bob Wood, allowed students
to experience the people, culture, and economy of Brazil for
two weeks. The students met bi-weekly in the fall to prepare
for the trip, studying various aspects of the Brazi.
In Rio de Janeiro, the group experienced first-hand the
Brazilian heat—the air-conditioned bus wasn’t. The
students survived the trip and spent the next few days in Rio,
celebrating New Year’s “Reveillon” with two million of their
closest friends. Next were visits to Corcavado (the famous
Christ Statue), Sugarloaf, the H. Stern jewelry factory, and
Maracana (the world’s largest soccer stadium).
The students returned for a week in São Paulo to visit
the Brazilian Stock Exchange and other businesses. They
also saw Americana-Santa Barbara—the home of an enclave
where Confederate soldiers and their descendents lived after
fleeing the U.S. following the Civil War.
At Manaus, a city of 2 million people located in the
Amazon Rain Forest, the students met Jorge of the Jungle—
the technical advisor for the movie Anaconda. Jorge led
them on a hike through the rain forest, showing them native
medicinal plants and wildlife, including a young Goliath
Spider (8” diameter). The final stop on the trip was to
Brasilia, the national capital, where the group toured the city
including the Presidential Palace.
All the students kept a journal of their experiences on
the trip. Russell Fankhauser’s final entry reads, “It was a
Our Brazilian Study Abroad students and faculty
Niki Dishman holding an anaconda
once in a lifetime experience, not only because of the
locations and companies visited, but also because of the
people we met.”
One objective was to return with the same students that
we took. This proved impossible. The experiences changed
the students forever. In the words of Jason Smith, “Traveling
to Brazil afforded me an incredible opportunity to experience,
first hand, the diverse business, social, and cultural
environments of South America. Building working
relationships with fellow students and professors, and
traveling together was certainly a highlight of my
MBA experience.”
Magellan Exchange Program
is for Faculty, Too!
by R. Dan Fesler, Professor of Accounting
In October of 2004, I attended an international studies
information session in the Johnson Hall auditorium.
TTU’s Magellan coordinator, Mark Stephens, was
hosting representatives from several institutions that
participate in the Magellan exchange program. That day,
representatives of the foreign institutions on the program
convinced me that a faculty exchange was a very real
possibility.
I completed the online faculty exchange
forms. One form requires a list of topics
that would be appropriate material for
discussion with European students and
professionals. I listed the Sarbanes-
Oxley Act of 2002 which has been the
topic of literally thousands of articles in
U.S. publications. I suspected academics
and professionals in Europe would
consider the new law a relevant and timely
topic. A few weeks later, an email message
was received from Han Levink, a
Netherlands professor interested in this
topic. We agreed that my exchange
would focus on
Sarbanes-Oxley with graduate students and practicing
controllers.
The Limberg School of Business provided me with first
class housing in Maastricht, The Netherlands. Maastricht is
an ancient city in the southern part of the country where the
oldest city gate in the Netherlands is located. Maastricht is
also where the European Union signed the Euro currency
agreement in 1992.
While in the Netherlands, I enjoyed the encounters
with both the graduate students and the
controllers. The European Union may enact
regulations similar to Sarbanes-Oxley within
the next year and at this writing, Han and I
are working on a publication on the topic.
In addition to learning a great deal about
European views, there is much understanding
gained about history, and a little about some of
those famous Dutch flowers. In the future, I
plan to apply for another international faculty
exchange program to gain additional
exposure to the educational
and cultural aspects in other
countries.
Celebrating Diversity
WINDOW ON THE WORLD
by Dr. Rodley Pineda and Lelia Gibson
International flags draped over Roaden University Center,
song and dance from four continents, and food from 14
cultures are just a few sights and sounds found at the
Window on the World (WOW) festival.
Matt Nickens
explains Native
American traditions
and dance during
the“Taste of WOW.”
The event, held every April for the last seven years, is
sponsored by the College of Business Globalization
Committee with major funding from Center Stage and
coordinated by Katie Kumar of the Division of Basic
Business.
The activities began on Friday morning with a symposium
addressing international issues. The 2005 symposium
coordinated by Dr. Rodley Pineda of the Decision Sciences
and Management Department discussed the international
aspects of food. Drs. Jon Jonakin and Magdalena Rappl of
the Economics, Finance, and Marketing Department served
as panelists.
The festival continued with a “Taste of WOW” funded
by the Fleetguard Diversity Council. Public school children
were brought to TTU for an hour and a half of international
entertainment-including Chinese lions, East Indian songs,
Native American dance, and Abusua’s interactive dance and
drums of West Africa.
“My family never misses WOW,” says Nashville resident
Lisa Harrell. “The event provides my son unique learning
opportunities that he would not experience in a traditional
classroom.”
The majority of the events took place on Saturday with
multicultural entertainment scheduled throughout the day,
cuisine from various cultures, and displays from 56 countries
and organizations. Children’s activities including arts, crafts,
instructional dancing, and games were organized by Lelia
Gibson of the Division of External Relations and funded
from Wal-mart and Fleetguard.
Logistical support for the event was provided by College
of Business Student Ambassadors, Marketing and Accounting
students, and International Business Society members. The
Honors Program, the Conservation Club of Biology, classes
in Sociology, Human Ecology, Geography, and other volunteers
from across campus provided additional assistance.
“The WOW event really opened my eyes to the many
varied and unique cultures represented by our students here
at Tech and the community,” said Cookeville resident Amy
Jo Carpenter.
BEING “GLOBAL” ALSO MEANS IMPORTING
Tennis Team has Strong International Flavor
by Bob Niebuhr
Aldrin Campos’ success in making the men’s and
women’s teams a real force in the OVC has much to
do with his being able to recruit on a global basis.
Since Campos, a native of Mexico, returned to Tech as a
graduate assistant in 1994,
he has had very
competitive teams
and has won
two OVC
championships.
While the
college is trying
to expand our
students’ horizons
by creating study
abroad programs
and offering
international student
exchanges,
many of Campos’
current players have
a very different background.
They are
already well-traveled,
have been fairly independent,
and are more cosmopolitan than most Tech
freshmen. In fact, the size, pace, and
quietness of Cookeville and the campus often presents
somewhat of a shock and a time of
adjusting.
Currently, ten of our 14 tennis team members are both
internationals and business majors. They come from
Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Italy, Japan, Malaysia,
Namibia, and Peru. Recruiting is much liked a “blind date,”
since Campos has to rely on records, video clips, and
recommendations. He rarely meets the parents, and his first
actual personal meeting with the players is often on the
campus when they arrive.
Campos’ undergraduate degree from Tech in marketing
really shows its value now as he “sells” TTU to prospects who
know very little about the university. All-OVC women’s
player Alet Boonzaaier (finance major from Namibia)
indicates that “the real reason I chose Tech was the constant
communication from Coach
Campos. He stayed in
contact by phone to
continually check on my
status and my interest in
coming here.”
We should
mention that
Al was a
pretty fair
player while
at Tech himself-his
129-72
singles/doubles
record puts him
3rd in our
records. While
he says that he
doesn’t try to
convince students
to major in business
(he also received his
MBA in 1997), we are
sure he makes them
aware of the programs in
Johnson Hall-that’s the
kind of alums we need to
continue to bring the best
and brightest to Tech . . .
even from the four corners of
the globe!
THE EAGLE HAS LANDED
Charlie Hawkins’ Eagles serve as reminders
of his generosity
by Judy Hees
“
Those who pretend to know everything are very irritating
to those of us who do!” exclaims Charles Hawkins, 1953
graduate of TTU. Whenever he comes to campus, Charlie
brings levity with his stories of the olden, but he is also
noted for the variety of “Golden Eagle” mascots that he
presents to individuals on campus; one of the largest
wooden eagles that Charlie has donated is on display in
President Bell’s office. The one we are most appreciative of in
Johnson Hall is the two foot high hand-carved mahogany
eagle that keeps watch over the state-of-the-art wireless
classroom that was recently refurbished thanks to Charlie’s
generosity. Another of his “golden eagles” is a bronzed model
that he presented as a memorial gift to honor Dean Louis
Johnson and now sits as guardian underneath his portrait in
Johnson Hall.
Charlie Hawkins came to Tech from Gallatin, Tennessee,
and graduated with a major in Industrial Management.
Charlie was very involved on campus as the vice president of
Charlie Hawkins and a new eagle for his renovated classroom
the Business Society and a member of Sigma Iota Epsilon
(SIE), the Honor Society for Business Management. He
began his career with IBM as a personnel director and moved
with his wife, Norma, and their four children from Indiana
to New York to Massachusetts, and finally settled in
Connecticut. His last 23 years with IBM were spent in
marketing for the New York City area.
Charlie has received numerous awards during his
lifetime, including one of which he is most proud, being
named by his hometown as the 2004 Outstanding Alumnus
of Gallatin High School. At Tech, he was awarded the
Outstanding Business Leadership Award for 1994-95 and also
served as the Business Foundation President from 1998-99.
He and Norma now reside on beautiful Signal
Mountain, Tennessee where they take pleasure in watching
the Golden Eagles as they fly over their house. We don’t
pretend to know everything, but we do know how much we
appreciate the generosity of Charlie Hawkins.
Our BusinesssMedia Center Helps the Governor’s Pre-K Literacy Program
by Melissa Scott
The Imagination Library was created in Sevier
County by Dolly Parton in 1996, and provides a
new, age-appropriate, hardcover book every
month to children from birth to age five at no cost to the
family. The Governor’s “Books from Birth” Foundation
was created by Governor Phil Bredesen in May 2004
with the charge of funding the Imagination Library
program throughout the state. The program’s goal is to
foster a love of reading in the 375,000 Tennessee children
under the age of five. For the Books from Birth project,
TTU’s BusinessMedia Center’s (BMC), under the
direction of Kevin Liska, was selected to develop
innovative marketing solutions for the program.
Dolly and children
The official Governor’s Books from Birth
Foundation website (www.governorsfoundation.org) was
created by the College’s BusinessMedia Center staff and
students. This innovative communications website
currently serves as an online resource to over 60
Tennessee counties offering or organizing countywide
Imagination Library programs. In the creation of the
Foundation’s site, BMC staff used emerging technology,
including streaming video files and real-time databases, to
encourage public participation and interest. The Center
was also instrumental in helping implement vital
branding and marketing concepts.
The newly created website boasts a vast array of
online resources, including an interactive state map,
password protected county toolbox, events calendar,
newsroom, and answers to many frequently asked
questions. In addition, the site proudly offers a “Watch
and Listen” page featuring video clips from participating
county leaders, parents and volunteers.
“TTU has such a treasure in the BusinessMedia
Center,” said Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation
president Lady Jackson. “Their staff provided us with
tangible solutions to the complex challenge of marketing
our resources and match-grant program to all 95
Tennessee counties.”
“In just two months, Kevin and his team of
students have produced one of our most valuable
communications tools,” Jackson said. “The result is a
creative, user-friendly website that is sure to become an
invaluable resource to the ever-growing number of
Tennessee counties seeking to offer their own
Imagination Library programs.”
STATE FARM NAMES TTU A “PRIORITY SCHOOL”
Funds MBA Program
10
by Monica Greppin
Tennessee Tech University has been selected as a
“priority school” from the State Farm Companies
Foundation. The Foundation gave the College of
Business $75,000 to create a Risk Management and
Insurance concentration in the MBA program. The funding
will allow the College to design, develop, and implement
distance-based courses in the MBA program that focus on
the insurance-related area of risk management.
Approximately 71 of State Farm employees in Tennessee are
graduates of Tennessee Tech.
The gift will assist faculty members in creating the
necessary courses and augment their expertise through
training in specific content areas related to risk management,
to purchase library and research materials for supplementing
student research, and to market the new concentration.
“This gift is beneficial in many ways,” said Bob Niebuhr,
dean of TTU’s College of Business. “It allows us to enrich
our course offerings, serve the risk management and
insurance industry, and meet the needs of individuals making
risk management a focus of their careers. We can’t thank
State Farm enough for recognizing the value of our program
and helping make it even better.”
DISTANCE LEARNING
Teaching from Home in my Shorts
My first opportunity to teach a distance course was
almost 25 years ago in the MBA program at the
University of South Carolina. The classes were
televised from a TV studio in Columbia to 21 reception
centers across the state. My visual aids consisted of 5 by 8
cards and a felt-tipped pen. With little training, and no
experience, I thought that I had prepared about four hours of
material for my first two-hour class. I ran out of anything to
say in 40 minutes. What an embarrassing beginning!
Because of the intense lighting needed, the studio was
chilled down to about 60 degree at the beginning of class,
but rapidly increased to over 80 degrees before the class
ended. By that time, I was usually a red-faced, sweating,
talking head. One day, a person approached me and asked
me where he could find Professor Caldwell. I said that I was
Professor Caldwell. He was a Distance MBA student, but he
did not recognize me because I looked like a “big, red cherry
on TV.”
Last year, I volunteered to teach a distance
undergraduate cost accounting course at Tech. Our
department decided to create distance versions of the
upper-level courses for those individuals seeking career
changes. We now have over 130 students in our Distance
MBA, and there is now a strong demand at the
undergraduate level to build the accounting offerings for the
MBA.
Instead of using a TV studio, I teach from my home.
The WebCT course management software facilitates
communication between students and me, and among
students. Additional software allows me to conduct classes
with PowerPoint presentations, transfer control to students to
allow them to make presentations to the class, control
discussions, and communicate with onscreen text and
graphics. What an improvement! It’s becoming very similar
in design to on-ground courses, and the interaction and
student relationships are back.
Can an old dog be taught new tricks? He can if the
treats taste good enough. And teaching distance courses at
Tennessee Tech is a real treat for me.
like a long time ago, but the
you for the challenges after
graduation. ”
College-wide Programs and Activities:
• The College faculty had a very productive year with
58 articles and other creative works published, 82
works in process, 50 presentations made at regional
or national meetings, 50 workshops or seminars
delivered to professional groups, and 94 faculty
extension and outreach activities.
• Our new freshmen undergraduate business student
enrollment was 207, the largest freshmen class for our
college, and an increase of over 20% from last year.
• Our first distance MBA students graduated in
December 2004. These students were a part of a
group of 41 students receiving their MBA degrees,
the largest graduating class in the history of the MBA
program. The distance students included employees
from such companies as BellSouth, Sears, AirTran,
SunTrust, Emerson, and HCA.
community leaders, students, educators, police,
firemen, children services, parents and more.
Planned/Deferred Gifts
The college’s planned giving program encourages individuals to find
ways to support us through their estates. At the same time, most of
these deferred gift plans result in significant benefits to the donor in
the form of estate or income tax savings.
College of Business alumni and friends have made planned estate gifts
that have helped students pay for their tuition and fees, provided
support for faculty development, and renovated classrooms.
Examples of planned gifts include the following:
Bequests (wills)
Life insurance
Life estate (property)
Charitable trusts
Aside from the financial benefits one might receive from making a
planned gift to the College of Business, there is an intrinsic value in
making such a gift. Planned gifts help maintain and advance the
quality of education at Tech. The impact of these gifts reaches far
beyond campus buildings and boundaries. Planned gifts to the
college ultimately benefit individuals who study, learn, teach, grow,
and give.
If we can help you with a particular planned gift, or if you have any
questions, please contact Pat Quillen at pquillen@tntech.edu, (931)
