Effects of planting - hole size, composting animal manure and sack on survival and growth of Eucaliptus camaldulensis , Ziziphus spina - chr isti and Pistasia atlantica planted in Mehran Plain, Iran

This study tested three methods thought to maintain soil moisture availability and thereby improve the performance of three species ( Eucaliptus camaldulensis , Ziziphu s spina - christi and Pistasia atlantica ) when planted in permanent landscape of Mehran plain: increased planting - hole size, composting animal manure and sack addition. Seedlings of the three species were grown in two planting - hole sizes (30*30*30 cm and 100 *100*100 cm), with and without composting animal manure, and with and without sack. The experiment was conducted in site (Mehran plain) in Ilam Province, Iran. Seedling growth and survival were monitored over 30 months. Seedling survival was >90% for all t hree species and did not differ significantly among any of the treatments. High rainfall in winter and autumn throughout and irrigation during the dry season the first year of the experiment may have enhanced seedling survival. Deeper planting - hole had the strongest effect on seedling growth for species, composting animal manure addition and sack had a positive effect on growth for all three species especially Eucaliptus camaldulensis . Seedlings growing in one - meter holes with composting animal manure and s ack had most height and diameter. The development and total number of roots were much better at this depth as compared to surface planting. Deep planting provides resistance to cyclones and induces earlier flowering and higher yields

fibers. They are c<strong>on</strong>sidered to be envir<strong>on</strong>mentally<br />

friendly <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> high breathability allows air to pass<br />

through them <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> have a high ability to reta<strong>in</strong><br />

moisture <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> water absorpti<strong>on</strong>. Sack additi<strong>on</strong><br />

significantly improved the <strong>growth</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> seedl<strong>in</strong>g than<br />

c<strong>on</strong>trol plots especially for E. <strong>camaldulensis</strong>.<br />

However, the effect was much weaker than the soil<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>manure</str<strong>on</strong>g> effect <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> it was not c<strong>on</strong>sistent am<strong>on</strong>g<br />

treatments; e.g., plants <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> P. <strong>atlantica</strong> given mulch<br />

did not grow better than c<strong>on</strong>trol seedl<strong>in</strong>gs, but <str<strong>on</strong>g>sack</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

plus <str<strong>on</strong>g>manure</str<strong>on</strong>g> plants grew better than <str<strong>on</strong>g>sack</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<strong>on</strong>ly<br />

seedl<strong>in</strong>gs. Sack additi<strong>on</strong> is thought to enhance<br />

seedl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>survival</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> performance <strong>in</strong> plantati<strong>on</strong>s by<br />

aid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> soil moisture retenti<strong>on</strong> (Davies, 1988;<br />

Evans, 1996).<br />

The overall c<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong> is that, this experiment<br />

dem<strong>on</strong>strated that <str<strong>on</strong>g>hole</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>plant<strong>in</strong>g</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>size</str<strong>on</strong>g> str<strong>on</strong>gly limits<br />

the <strong>growth</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Eucaliptus</strong> <strong>camaldulensis</strong>, <strong>Ziziphus</strong><br />

<strong>sp<strong>in</strong>a</strong>- <strong>chr</strong><strong>isti</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Pistasia</strong> <strong>atlantica</strong> species when<br />

<strong>planted</strong> <strong>in</strong> a low ra<strong>in</strong>fall areas, post-shift<strong>in</strong>g<br />

cultivati<strong>on</strong>, sec<strong>on</strong>dary successi<strong>on</strong> site <strong>in</strong> the west <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<strong>Iran</strong>. Manure additi<strong>on</strong> may positively affect seedl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>growth</strong>, depend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong> other site c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s. Putt<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>sack</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>in</strong> the bottom <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the <str<strong>on</strong>g>plant<strong>in</strong>g</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>hole</str<strong>on</strong>g> had a<br />

relatively m<strong>in</strong>or effect <strong>on</strong> seedl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>growth</strong>. An<br />

important implicati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this study is that the results<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> seedl<strong>in</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>plant<strong>in</strong>g</str<strong>on</strong>g> experiments may <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten be<br />

specific to the particular areas <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> envir<strong>on</strong>mental<br />

c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> which the study is c<strong>on</strong>ducted.<br />

Experimental studies across a wider range <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> areas, <strong>in</strong><br />

which resource availability <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> fluxes are carefully<br />

measured, are required for the development <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

protocols for <str<strong>on</strong>g>plant<strong>in</strong>g</str<strong>on</strong>g> the studied species. Such<br />

research is essential if the recent <strong>in</strong>itiatives by <strong>Iran</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> other Southwest Asian countries to exp<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

area <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> plantati<strong>on</strong> forests are to be successful.<br />
