MALAYSIAN GRAND PRIX: SEPANG
Date: 23 March 2008 Race distance: 310.408 km
Circuit length: 5.543 km Number of laps: 56
2008 marks Sepang’s ten year anniversary. Sepang is one of the most technical circuits in Formula
One. The combination of long high-speed straights and tight twisting complexes make the track
very complicated, but also perfect for overtaking as the track itself is very wide. Sepang circuit is
also the most extreme cockpit environment of the season. Driver fitness is crucial, as the heat can
be extreme.
circuit's width varies at the end of the different long straights. This allows for diverse racing lines, and
the 15-corner design provides genuine overtaking opportunities.
SPANISH GRAND PRIX: BARCELONA
Date: 27 April 2008 Race distance: 307.104 km
Circuit length: 4.655 km Number of laps: 66
The Circuit de Catalunya is unusual in that it is used extensively for testing so all teams are very well
prepared for the bumpy and unforgiving track surface. There are a number of high-speed corners
which exert much G-force and make it even harder for the drivers to take the right line. Tyre wear is
particularly high and the varying winds that cut across the circuit mean an optimum set-up can be
hard to find.
TURKISH GRAND PRIX: ISTANBUL
Date: 24 April 2008 Race distance: 309.396 km
Circuit length: 5.338 km Number of laps: 58
Turkey was a new race in 2005, with a state-of-the-art circuit constructed from a design by
Hermann Tilke. The circuit features 14 turns – eight lefts and six rights – with cars reaching speeds of
up to 320 kph. The circuit is in the hilly region on the Asiatic side of the Bosphorous, about 40 minutes
drive from Istanbul and features sweeping banked turns, gradients and a wide variety of corners which
make for spectacular racing. An unusual feature of the venue is that the lap runs anti-clockwise, making
the Turkish Grand Prix only the second race on the calendar to do so (Brazil is the other one).
Date: 25 May 2008 Race distance: 260.520 km
Circuit length: 3.340 km Number of laps: 78
This is the glamour race of the season. Indeed for the sponsors and business interests connected to F1, this
is the race of the year. Everybody meets and networks, anybody who is anybody makes sure they are
here to be seen. And the racing is not bad on the twisty street circuit either. There is always drama, as the
lack of run-off areas and the nearness of the concrete walls and of the water in the harbour makes for the
ultimate in precision driving. Lose your focus for a nano-second and you’re off.
CANADIAN GRAND PRIX: MONTREAL
Date: 08 June 2008 Race distance: 305.270 km
Circuit length: 4.361 km Number of laps: 70
This race made it back onto the 2004 calendar after anti-tobacco legislation threatened its
existence. It is very popular with teams and fans alike as Montreal takes a very relaxed and festive
approach to the F1 Circus coming to town. Four days of parties and fun for the spectators are
interspersed with some tough conditions and tricky car management for the teams and drivers, as
they look to save the brakes which come under much pressure at the end of the long straights
followed by tight hairpins. The first corner is an awkward one: always expect some furious action at
the start.
FRENCH GRAND PRIX: MAGNY-COURS
Date: 22June 2008 Race distance: 308.586 km
Circuit length: 4.411 km Number of laps: 70
The elevation of Magny-Cours to Grand Prix status was the desire of former French president
Francois Mitterand, the expression of France’s enduring love affair with Grand Prix racing dating
back to Le Mans in 1906. The first race at the revised Magny-Cours racetrack was held in 1991 and
was won by Nigel Mansell. Since then Michael Schumacher has crossed the finish line in first place
seven times, relishing the track’s technical layout where passing is quite difficult. There were a
number of modifications made in 2003 to facilitate overtaking, in particular the Chateau d’Eau
corner was lengthened and further modifications were done to the Lycee complex.
This year’s result:
1 st – F. Massa, Ferrari; 2 nd – K. Räikkönen, Ferrari; 3 rd – J. Trulli, Toyota
BRITISH GRAND PRIX: SILVERSTONE
Date: 6 July 2008 Race distance: 308.355 km
Circuit length: 5.141 km Number of laps: 60
Silverstone has the distinction of being the first venue for the inaugural World Championship Grand
Prix. The year was 1950 and since then the former military airfield has been in the forefront of British
motor racing. The British Grand Prix was held here many times since then and it was finally awarded
a long-term contract in 1986. Since then it has undergone major modifications and rebuilds,
primarily in 1991 and 1994 and is established as one of the fan’s favourite races of the year. There is
always drama and it is one of the most challenging circuits, loved by the drivers and, with the
weather often playing a leading role in the race weekend, it is never short of full-on entertainment.
The German Grand Prix returns to Hockenheim this year as part of the new arrangement for the
race to alternate between the Hockenheimring and the Nürburgring.
Being one of the most historic circuits on the F1 Calendar the Hockenhenheimring has an
atmosphere hardly matched by any other race, with the highlight being the entrance into the
Motodrome where thousands of fans cheer on their idols. With its long straights and narrow corners
it always provides for interesting racing.
HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX: BUDAPEST
Date: 03 August 2008 Race distance: 306.458 km
Circuit length: 4.381 km Number of laps: 70
The Hungaroring was opened in 1986 and attracted an estimated 200,000 fans in this natural amphitheatre
outside Budapest. Over the years it has acquired a reputation as a great destination for the travelling fans,
with superb views of the track and with the delights of Budapest nearby. But on the flip side this is a venue
where it is very hard to overtake, and despite being one of the slowest in the World Championship, it still
requires the cars to be set up with medium to high downforce to counter the surface which is very slippery.
The layout was revised in 2003, as the start-finish line was lengthened and the first corner modified to
encourage overtaking, and the straight before turn 12 has also been lengthened to encourage more
passing.
In 2008 Spain has been rewarded with a second Grand Prix date and the race in Valencia is one of
the 2 new races on the 2008 Formula One Calendar.
The new race is set to be one of the highlights of the season, as it will take place on a brand new
harbourside street circuit where the Grand Prix will be based around the marina formerly used for
the America’s Cup race. The layout has the variety of chicanes and hairpins that are to be
expected in any street course, but also boasts some flat-out, sweeping sections amongst its
spectacular 25-corner layout.
Belgium's Spa-Francorchamps circuit is among the most historic on the Formula One calendar and
remains one of the most popular venues with drivers and fans alike. Spa is the longest circuit on the
calendar. Its mix of long straights and challenging fast corners, coupled with its picturesque setting,
means that most drivers still rank it among their favourite tracks. The weather is still notoriously
Monza has hosted the Italian Grand Prix every year since 1922, except for 1980. This remarkable record
means there is no other F1 track with so much history and drama, which is also enhanced by the fact that
Monza has always been one of the fastest tracks, even after the addition of the varianti, or chicanes in
the 1970s. This race always attracts huge and enthusiastic crowds, utterly passionate about Ferrari. After
years of watching other cars winning on their home ground, finally in 1996 the tifosi got the victory they
had craved since 1988, as Michael Schumacher took his Ferrari past the finish line in first place. This is a
circuit that will attract thousands just for a testing session and the Grand Prix is a must stop-over for fullblooded
racing fans who come from all over Europe to soak up the extraordinary atmosphere.
This was 2004’s second new circuit. Four years on, after a very successful debut, its sheer size
overshadows every other circuit, incorporating 16 wide-ranging corners – 7 left- and 9 right-handers
that combine to form a 5.45-kilometre (3.39-mile) lap. Viewed from overhead, the circuit’s shape
recalls the Chinese symbol “Shang”, which means “high” or “above”. There is room for 200,000
spectators and the grandstand is unique in the world of Formula One in having two “wing-like”
BRAZILIAN GRAND PRIX: SAO PAULO
Date: 02 November 2008 Race distance: 305.909 km
The Interlagos racetrack was built in 1954 in Sao Paulo, the home city of Emerson Fittipaldi, Ayrton
Senna and Rubens Barrichello, three of Brazil’s greatest racing drivers. Though it has alternated with
Rio de Janeiro for the right to host the Brazilian Grand Prix, Interlagos has been the preferred venue
since 1990. It is a tough circuit for the teams as it requires much care in the set-up, as the car has to
cope with fast and very long straights, separated by difficult corners and yet also cope with the
undulating, bumpy, hilly section.
A number of changes to both the Sporting and Technical Regulations have been made by
the FIA for the 2008 Formula One season.
Traction and launch control
Traction control - systems which prevent the rear wheels spinning if a driver applies too much
power - are no longer permitted. This will place more emphasis on driver skill and should lead
to more overtaking, as drivers are more likely to make mistakes. Similarly, systems that help the
driver hold the clutch at a specific point to ensure an optimal getaway at the race start, have
been outlawed.
Electronic Control Units (ECUs)
From 2008, all teams must use a standardised, FIA-approved ECU to control their cars'
electronics. As well as providing a more level playing field in this area of development, the
new ECU - which must run FIA-approved software - will allow the FIA to monitor the cars'
performance more closely.
Engine changes
As in 2007, drivers must use the same engine for two consecutive events. If that engine fails in
final practice or qualifying and has to be changed ahead of the race, the driver will be given
a grid penalty - 10 places if the change was made before qualifying, or the back of the grid if
it was made following qualifying.
However, in an amendment for 2008, each driver is allowed one ‘free’ change per season,
unless that change takes place at the final round. In other words, he will not incur a penalty
for his first engine failure of the year, as long it is not at the last event.
Gearboxes
In a bid to further improve reliability and cut costs, gearboxes must now last for four
consecutive Grand Prix meetings. Every unscheduled gearbox change will require the
relevant driver to drop five places on the grid at that meeting. If a driver fails to finish a race,
he may start the next meeting with a new gearbox without incurring a penalty.
Qualifying
In a very slight tweak to the familiar knockout qualifying format, the duration of Q1 has been
increased from 15 to 20 minutes, while that of Q3 has been cut from 15 to 10. Q2 remains 15minutes
long. Furthermore, cars participating in Q3 will no longer get back the fuel used in
that session - they must now start the race with whatever fuel was left in the car at the end of
qualifying, thus eliminating the need for the infamous 'fuel-burning' phase at the start of Q3.
Cockpit safety
One of the slightly more visible differences to the cars this season will be an increase in the
height of the cockpit padding - and hence the cockpit sides - on either side of the driver’s
helmet, a change that has been implemented to further increase head protection in the
event of an impact.
Biofuel
As part of moves to make Formula One racing ever more environmentally friendly, the FIA has
introduced a new rule governing fuel. From 2008, at least 5.75 percent of all fuel must contain
biomatter and, as a result, all cars must be designed to be biofuel compliant.
• An F1 car can accelerate from 0 to 100 kph in about 2.5 seconds. It can reach
200 kph in less than 5 seconds.
• During acceleration changing gears takes 0.004 seconds.
• An F1 car has very impressive braking characteristics. It can stop from 200 kph within
1.9 seconds and a distance of about 55 metres. During braking, the driver experiences 5G
of pressure while he is forced into the safety belts.
• During a race approximately 6.5 million ignitions take place inside a Fomula One V8 engine.
• The con rod of the engines which have to last Saturday and Sunday have to sustain a
pressure of nearly 3 tons.
• To optimise the setting for each circuit, engineers use more than 50 different transmission set
ups to ‘compose’ the ideal 7 gear gearbox.
• The Monocoque is built from 6 micrometer strong carbon fibre. In some areas up to 60 layers
of it are used.
• On average, a F1 driver sheds approximately 2kg in weight during a F1 race.
• In one Grand Prix weekend the team uses a maximum of 1,200 liters of fuel, between 60 and
80 liters of engine oil and up to 30 liters of transmission oil.
• The exhaust fumes can reach a temperature of 800°C.
• Formula One tyres may heat up to 130 °C. Beyond this threshold there
is a risk of blistering.
• Carbon brake discs and pads require a minimum operating temperature
of 550–650 °C. During braking they reach temperatures of over 1,000 °C.
• The Cockpit temperature reaches 50 degrees Centigrade.
BACKGROUND
S U P P O R T R A C E S
G P 2 S E R I E S
Created at the end of 2004 by the combined genius of Bernie Ecclestone, Flavio
Briatore and Bruno Michel, the GP2 Series saw its first competitive race in 2005 as
the new championship began its life as the official Formula 1 support event at that
season’s San Marino Grand Prix.
The championship was based on a simple foundation. Design and develop a high tech car,
with speeds close to Formula 1, remove driver aids and add the best young drivers in
the world. Create a weekend format of two races, reverse grids, points for pole
position and fastest laps and set the cars off for competition on the grand prix
circuits of the world.
The concept flourished immediately. In its three years of existence the GP2 Series has
quickly and firmly cemented itself as one of the world’s most exciting categories of
single seater motorsport. As an official support event to the Formula 1 World
Championship, it is the perfect shop window for teams, drivers and their sponsors, and
all for a fraction of the cost of the competition in Formula 1.
A measure of its success is evidenced by the statistic that in 2008 over a quarter of
the F1 grid is comprised of GP2 graduates. For a feeder category to have had that
great an influence on modern Formula 1 is unheard of.
In 2008 the GP2 Series goes from strength to strength with the addition to the series
of a brand new car. Inside its cockpit, 26 drivers will do battle to place their name
alongside the greatest drivers in the world in Formula 1.
Racing à la Kart.
On your marks for the second half of the MINI CHALLENGE 2008.
Fascinating overtaking manoeuvres, exciting duels and a modern lifestyle – that’s why motorsport
fans love the MINI CHALLENGE! Spectators can look forward to the weekend of 18-20 July for
precisely these reasons when the Clubsport series features as official support race for the Formula 1
at the Hockenheimring.
The German Grand Prix is the fifth of eight race weekends for the MINI CHALLENGE and marks the
start of the second half of the season. Thomas Neumann (Mitterteich, EHRL SPORT LECHNER
RACING) is leading the driver-category having gained 151 points after completing seven of the 15
races in total. The 20-year old has driven consistently good races to date. After numerous
appearances on the podium as runner-up Neumann was finally able to enjoy the first MINI
CHALLENGE win of his career just before the mid-season break (‘Rock the Race’, Oschersleben).
Ranked just four points behind him is 18-year old Daniel Keilwitz (Villingen, Schubert Motorsport).
More exciting duels are expected with such drivers as Hari Proczyk (Knittelfeld/A, Team ProSieben),
Daniel Haglöf (Borlänge/S, GIGAMOT), Olivier Metz (Châtillon-en-Michaille/F, Schubert Motorsport)
and Stephanie Halm (Ammerbuch, GIGAMOT) hot on the heels of the leading duo.
37 drivers are taking part this season all of whom will be racing with the new powerful 211ps MINI
John Cooper Works CHALLENGE. The race cars, which have a top speed of 240km/h, are
technically identical maximising the principle of equal chances for all participants. Apart from
motor sport professionals and up-and-coming talent, VIPs also regularly take part in the series as
“Guest-Starters”. Actor and James Bond ‘baddie’ (‘Tomorrow never Dies’), Götz Otto, will take his
place in the cockpit at the Hockenheimring.
The races at the Formula 1 are among the highlights of the season which started mid-April at the
‘Preis der Stadt Stuttgart’ (Hockenheimring). In addition to this, the Series has already featured
twice at Oschersleben (GT Masters, ‘Rock the Race’) and once at the 24 Hour Race on the
legendary ‘Nordschleife’ at the Nürburgring. Following the Formula 1 weekend, the MINI
CHALLENGE will take to the track at the World Touring Car Championship (Oschersleben) and at
the Oldtimer Grand Prix (Nürburgring). In keeping with tradition, the season finale will take place at
the Salzburgring.
