for People in Work 

If you are over 19, working at least eight hours a week and do not have 

a full Level 2 qualification you could be entitled to FREE training 

through the College’s Training Works initiative, which is funded through 

the European Social Fund. 

You are able to study a full range of 

qualifications covering Skills for Life 

and Level 1 and Level 2 courses. 

In addition, if you are aged between 

19-24 you could also study a Level 3 

programme (specific criteria must 

be met).

Apprenticeships 

Combine working with learning and get 

your career off the ground with an 

Apprenticeship. 

An Apprenticeship is a real job with 

training. Apprentices earn and learn 

at the same time, gaining hands-on 

experience and new skills and 

knowledge, in the workplace and, 

in most cases, at College. 

Key benefits of being an apprentice

Apprenticeship to a degree in

Apprenticeships follow a 

structured programme that leads 

to recognised qualifications. 

Generally, Apprenticeships take 

between one and three years to 

complete (depending on the 

sector). 

Apprenticeships can be taken at 

three levels: Intermediate (Level 2), 

Advanced (Level 3) and Higher 

(Level 4/5). The type of 

Apprenticeship you choose will 

depend on your intended career 

and any experience and 

qualifications you may already 

have gained. 

Like all employees, apprentices 

receive a wage. Employers are 

obliged to cover an apprentice’s 

salary for a minimum of 30 hours 

per week. 

Can anyone become an apprentice? 

Anyone over the age of 16, who 

has been living in England for at 

least three years and is not in 

full-time education, can become 

an apprentice. To be an apprentice 

you must be employed in your 

chosen industry.

24+ Loans 

Are you aged 24 or over and 

thinking about further education? 

If you want to start a course on or 

after 1 August 2013 you could 

qualify for a 24+ Advanced 

Learning Loan. These loans will 

help you pay College tuition fees 

and are good news if you were 

worrying about how to pay for 

your course. 

The loans are available for most 

learners aged 24 and over who 

wish to study at Level 3 and 

above. 

You can apply online through the 

Student Loans Company. Your 

household income will not be taken 

into account and there is no credit 

check. You won’t need to pay 

anything back until you are earning 

over £21,000 per year.

At Highbury you have access to one of the leading providers of automotive training in the South East. We deliver 

Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) and Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) qualifications, which serve as a
