Worldwide Abstracts and Reviews INJ DEPARTMENTS ASSOCIATION FOCUS TAPPI Playing Growing Role In Nonwovens Industry A concerted cooperative effort between the two U.S. associations most involved in the nonwovens industry - INDA, Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry, and TAPPI, the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry — has one goal in mind: increasing the knowledge base of the nonwovens industry. While INDA, by its very nature, has always focused on nonwovens issues, TAPPI has concentrated on this specialty business through its Nonwovens Division, one of 12 technical divisions that reports to the association's Technical Operations Council. TAPPI, one of the oldest technical associations of pulp and paper and allied industries in the world with more than 30,000 members in 80 countries, sees itself as playing a very special role of bridging the gap in the area of technology and marketing information between the paper industry and the nonwovens industry, according to Nonwovens Division chairman T.W. Singh, of Evanite. "There seems to be a synergy in process technology and testing methods in the paper industry and nonwovens, especially wet laid nonwovens," said Singh. "There has been quite an encouraging level of cooperation between TAPPI and INDA over the last few years. Changes in leadership, both in the TAPPI and INDA organizations, have helped foster collaborative efforts." The most obvious result of increased cooperation between the two associations is the joint INDA/TAPPI International Conference scheduled for September, 2000 that is basically a bringing together of INDA's annual INDA-Tec meetings and TAPPI's annual Nonwovens Conference. "This joint effort is expected to offer the best of both the organizations to their membership, namely market and technical expertise that no other technical organization in this field can provide," Singh said.
