<strong>Are</strong> <strong>you</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>terested</strong> <strong>in</strong> jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>CREST</strong> <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Panel</strong>?<br />

The <strong>CREST</strong> <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Panel</strong> is a vital part of <strong>the</strong> <strong>CREST</strong> Award Scheme and is now <strong>in</strong> its third year.<br />

We want to learn more about <strong>you</strong>, <strong>the</strong> <strong>CREST</strong> student, to make our award scheme as excit<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

engag<strong>in</strong>g and relevant to <strong>you</strong> as possible. The panel is a place where <strong>you</strong> can tell us <strong>you</strong>r views<br />

on various subjects to do with science, technology, eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and maths (STEM). It is also where<br />

we want <strong>you</strong> to be completely honest and open about <strong>you</strong>r thoughts and op<strong>in</strong>ions.<br />

It will help us to shape new ideas about how we get more students <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> scheme, how<br />

we can improve our support for student’s project work and communicate <strong>the</strong> many benefits of<br />

<strong>the</strong> scheme effectively.<br />

How will <strong>the</strong> <strong>Panel</strong> Work?<br />

The <strong>Panel</strong> consists of 25 students, aged between 13 - 19 years, from across <strong>the</strong> UK. They will be<br />

<strong>in</strong>vited to meet <strong>in</strong> person twice a year, and communicate with each o<strong>the</strong>r and <strong>the</strong> British Science<br />

Association dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> year via social media sites such as Facebook.<br />

What are <strong>the</strong> benefits of be<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Panel</strong>?<br />

You will have one of <strong>the</strong> oldest science and eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g focused organisations listen<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

<strong>you</strong>r views to help <strong>in</strong>spire <strong>the</strong> next generation. You will also feature on <strong>the</strong> Association<br />

website.<br />

You will be experienc<strong>in</strong>g how to discuss and record <strong>you</strong>r ideas about various topics dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Panel</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>gs, held at some of <strong>the</strong> UK’s largest STEM events (e.g. The British Science<br />

Festival)<br />

You will make new contacts, f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g out about new <strong>in</strong>itiatives and organisations that can<br />

support STEM subjects and careers.<br />

What is <strong>the</strong> time commitment?<br />

Throughout <strong>the</strong> year we will ask <strong>you</strong> to help with <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g (* are m<strong>in</strong>imum expected):<br />

Fill out a basel<strong>in</strong>e survey when <strong>you</strong> first sign up. (around 20 m<strong>in</strong>utes)*<br />

Attend as many <strong>Panel</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>gs as possible. (*m<strong>in</strong>imum of one – meet<strong>in</strong>gs are <strong>in</strong> March<br />

and September each year)<br />

Take on a small bit of fact f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g for us <strong>in</strong> between meet<strong>in</strong>gs, for example f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g out what<br />

25 of <strong>you</strong>r friends th<strong>in</strong>k of science, or collect<strong>in</strong>g news articles that <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>you</strong>.<br />

Provide feedback on new developments/ideas via e-mail or Facebook.*<br />

What acknowledgement will <strong>you</strong> receive?<br />

It is really important to us that we acknowledge <strong>the</strong> time each student commits to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Panel</strong>, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> important role <strong>the</strong>y will play. To that end we have a series of ways of recognis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> students<br />

which will be of benefit to <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

Personal certificate of <strong>in</strong>volvement at <strong>the</strong> end of each year’s service and letter from <strong>the</strong><br />

Chief Executive of <strong>the</strong> British Science Association (if <strong>you</strong> have fulfilled <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>imum<br />

requirements)<br />

Certificate of <strong>in</strong>volvement for school (if requested)<br />

Free attendance to two major Science events, The Big Bang Fair and <strong>the</strong> British Science<br />

Festival (where possible)<br />

Travel support <strong>in</strong> attend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se events<br />

Automatic FREE membership of <strong>the</strong> British Science Association.<br />

Your responsibilities<br />

The nom<strong>in</strong>ation form requires <strong>you</strong> to have <strong>the</strong> permission of a parent /guardian and (where<br />

possible) a teacher to show <strong>the</strong>ir support for <strong>you</strong>r nom<strong>in</strong>ation. We will not accept a nom<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

form without a parental signature as this shows that <strong>the</strong>y agree to support <strong>you</strong>r attendance at <strong>the</strong><br />

events and agree to <strong>you</strong>r participation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>you</strong>th panel.<br />

You will be responsible for arrang<strong>in</strong>g <strong>you</strong>r attendance at events, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g safe travel to and from<br />

<strong>the</strong> venue. You may travel with an adult or on <strong>you</strong>r own at <strong>you</strong>r parents/guardians discretion, and<br />

<strong>you</strong> will receive support for <strong>you</strong>r travel costs.<br />

You will also be responsible for updat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>you</strong>r contact details and participation <strong>in</strong> onl<strong>in</strong>e<br />

conversations via e-mail and social network<strong>in</strong>g sites. The Association will give guidance on how to<br />

jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se discussions, but please ensure that <strong>you</strong> are happy with <strong>the</strong> content first.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ally, all approved members of <strong>the</strong> panel have a responsibility to provide a safe environment for<br />

<strong>the</strong> open discussion of views, without abusive or negative behaviour from o<strong>the</strong>r members..<br />

Nom<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

The British Science Association takes <strong>you</strong>r right to privacy seriously, and wants <strong>you</strong> to feel<br />

comfortable be<strong>in</strong>g part of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Panel</strong>, and nom<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g <strong>you</strong>rself for <strong>the</strong> volunteer position.<br />

Your data will not be made available to third parties without <strong>you</strong>r prior consent. You may be<br />

contacted by <strong>the</strong> British Science Association staff <strong>in</strong> relation to <strong>you</strong>th orientated projects or for<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation ga<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g. If <strong>you</strong> are chosen as a panel member, <strong>the</strong> British Science Association will<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ue to keep <strong>you</strong>r contact details <strong>in</strong>def<strong>in</strong>itely after <strong>you</strong>r role on <strong>the</strong> panel has f<strong>in</strong>ished, unless<br />

<strong>you</strong> request <strong>the</strong>ir removal. By register<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Panel</strong> <strong>you</strong> agree to us contact<strong>in</strong>g <strong>you</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

future about matters related to <strong>the</strong> <strong>CREST</strong> Awards, o<strong>the</strong>r relevant opportunities and to us us<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>you</strong>r anecdotal quotes for promotional purposes.<br />
