Tips on Colour
Selection and Use
• Warm, clean colours, such as brighter Reds,
Oranges, Yellows tend to be active, ideally
suited to spaces that are not used for
resting.
• Cool colours, such as Blues, Greens, Purples
tend to be more passive and are ideal for
quieter spaces such as bedrooms, family
rooms, dens.
• Neutral colours, such as beiges, tans, greys
and whites are ideal for use in open-concept
spaces to create flow between areas.
• Apply colours to wall areas that are
most visible in the space.
• To get a sense of how colours interact with
other items in the space, arrange furniture or
artwork around the dried colour sample as
it would typically be seen.
• View colours during the lighting conditions in
which the space will be typically viewed.
• To see the same colour in various areas, apply
the paint to a 2’x4’ piece of bristol board or
gypsum board so you can move it around.
• Use the same trim colour throughout all
rooms to provide a connection between
spaces.

Exterior Design
& Colour Trends
Nature continues to provide limitless colour
inspiration for both interior and exterior design
and renovation projects. Colours that provide a
sense of nurturing, safety, balance and support
are being used on interiors. On exterior surfaces,
colours that bring together the home and
surrounding environment are widely specified.
Whatever colour or finish being considered, it’s
always important to work with the lighting and
the ‘permanent’ fixtures found in the space, such
as flooring, tiles, brick, stone, countertops, and
any appliances – in any area of the home – both
inside and out. Lighting conditions will make
colours appear different at different times of the
day or under different types of artificial lighting,
such as halogens or warm compact fluorescents.
It’s important to bring colour samples home to
select colour under the lighting conditions in the
space. The use of Cloverdale Paint Colour Tester
quarts provide the ‘ultimate’ in colour assurance
for the colour(s) being considered.
Natural Materials Dominate. Building materials
such as wood, stone and metal continue to
dominate modern interior design. Natural
materials connect us with the outdoors and
provide a very strong and nurturing atmosphere
when used in design projects. Colours that
enhance and support the look of natural
materials are found throughout design projects
– from Kitchens and Baths through Bedrooms
and other living spaces. The colours found under
the images at the bottom of the page indicate
today’s colour palette.
Cabinetry
Two basic finishes exist for cabinetry
– stained semi-transparent wood or solid
colours – whether laminated for gloss or painted
to provide colour. To refresh cabinets that reveal
the natural colour of wood or are stained a
dark colour, much preparation and finishing is
needed – as well as a fair bit of disruption to
the kitchen, given all of the doors need to be
removed for refinishing. If the idea is to stay
with a transparent finish to celebrate the wood’s
natural appearance and texture, a white wash
of stain can be applied to the sanded wood to
provide a brighter appearance. At the other end
of the spectrum, mahogany, dark espressos, or
ebony finishes are popular choices. It’s always
important to apply a clear coat of varnish or a
water-based lacquer over top of the stain to add
protection and longevity of the finish.
Kitchen Colours:
Kitchens are more and more the ‘feature’ space
in the home and are now shifting toward more
lively and inspiring palettes on the wall areas.
Because most kitchens have so little wall space,
adding bold colours can liven-up your kitchen
and compliment the permanent fixtures such
as cabinets and appliances. Don’t be afraid to
experiment with splash of bold colour. Warm
colours are popular in kitchens because they can
be active and fun, so bright reds, oranges and
yellow-based greens are good choices where a
lively kitchen suits the home. For a more classic
look, greys, silvers, blues and browns that are
found in nature work with most existing or
permanent fixture colours in your kitchen.
Bathroom Colours:
Bold can also be beautiful in bathrooms,
however, comforting creams, beiges and other
warm neutrals are safe colour choices that fit
easily into any bathroom design scheme with
mainly white fixtures and chrome accessories.
Bolder colours create a cheerful, fun atmosphere
but may not be everyone. By adding a touch
of bold colour to certain areas of your bath you
can still create a statement without it being
an over powering element. When selecting a
bathroom colour, consider that the wall colour
may reflect back onto your face and may have
an unexpected result, depending upon lighting
conditions and the actual wall colour. Warm
tones work well for bathrooms. But don’t rule
out bold accent colours to add some sparkle.
Exterior Painting
As you consider the areas to be painted, think
also about the areas or surfaces that you
would like to emphasize or de-emphasize.
Perhaps the front door has great architectural
details that you would like emphasized, so
use a bolder colour to draw attention to the
door. If there are surfaces that you would
like to de-emphasize, such as downspouts
or eavestroughs, consider painting them the
same colour as the siding or the most dominant
colour in combination. That way, the eye
would be drawn to the more architecturally
interesting features of the exterior, such as
doors or windows.
Now that you know which surfaces are not
going to be painted, determine a single colour
that will be included in a colour combination.
That colour could be an off-white that
represents the downspouts and eavestroughs
that may not be painted. From that single
colour, identify the various colour combinations
that most resemble your starting colour.
