The year started with three promising
new teachers: Abed Hishoono
for Oshivambo, Deidre van
Schalkwyk for English, Elizabeth
Lorris-Qiunt as class teacher for
Grade 3 and Marina Higham as
class teacher for Grade 4. Unfortunately
Deidre van Schalkwyk left
after some weeks. Nawala Weber-
Trianus started her career as class
teacher taking the new Grade 1,
class teacher of Grade 2 was Erich
Kunderer, of Grade 5 Heide Rauh,
of Grade 6 Erich Meier and of Grade
7 Heidrun von Koenen. Christiane
Ahlenstorf, Eurythmy teacher, was
still ill.
The first exciting event was the
Small Schools Athletics where our
school performed well as 10 learners
could participate at Zone B.
Soon after this the Sports Festivals
followed.
In April Grade 5 and 6 were performing
the musical Peronnik with
the help of Mrs. Stauffer which was
a good success for both classes.
Two colleges, Boyd Kakonga
and Heidrun von Koenen, travelled
before Easter to Cape Town to
participate at the National Waldorf
Seminar at the Constantia Waldorf
School. They reported enthusiastically
about their experience as
they could learn very much about
child discussions.
The St. John’s Festival (24 June)
could take place with a story just
before sun set and a huge fire in
the dark. Both celebrations are of
serious importance to the school
community.
The Day of the African Child (16
June) was celebrated in a good
atmosphere with a good meal and
singing.
At the end of September the
Michaelmas Festival was celebrated
with a small come-together
after the morning circle. In the
same week the St. Martin’s Fair
took place.
It was decided the post should be
handed out only on Thursday and it
proved to work well.
Every six weeks a small cultural
festival was organized for the Primary
School learners to make them
more aware of what the culture
could mean.
It was discussed how to improve
the Parents Evenings and how to
organize the program.
The year came quickly to an end
and the reports were prepared and
translated.
Altogether it was a good year
with the normal challenges.
Architecture Workshop
for all Teachers and
Colleagues
The following questions were asked: What
can our school look like in ten years? Which
architecture fits to us? How can we use our
existing buildings in the best way? How can
we improve the situation of our High School?
Where is the big new hall for festivals and theatre
situated? What are the needs for sport?
How can we use empty and sunny spaces for
more shady terraces and places to communicate?
What are the needs of our teachers? Where
should the new library be located? Do we need
a Kindergarden on our school ground in future?
Workshop facilitator: Keith Struthers, Architect,
Cape Town. He developed a new Masterplan,
inspired from our wishes and thoughts view
months later.
Minister of Education
Dr. A. Iyambo visited us
We are very proud, that our Minister of Education
came to visit us. His speech in the hall
touched all of us. Thank you!
“This school is beautiful. It is a truly Namibian
school. The best student of Namibia* comes
from this school. Now, I could see myself where
he is coming from and what the other learners
are doing here. We want Germany to assist us.
Our colleagues from Germany – I’m very happy
to see you. My dream for Namibia is, to build up
the vocational training. We have no option, no
choice. We have a high rate of unemployed people.
So we must start in the primary level. Not
only at the end. People that build up countries,
are those with the best vocational education.
This school is unique in Namibia. You start with
this beautiful school. Let’s continue. If children
love their teachers, then they learn quickly.
This is what I just experienced in your grade 1.
That is what Namibia needs: Teachers who love
their children, children who love their
teachers. You can be proud, to be a learner of
this school. You can walk with a proud breast
through Windhoek.
Thank you for making Namibia proud. What a
beauty, your eyes are sparkling. And I promise
to come back, but next time I‘ll just come as
a surprise. God bless you.”
150th Birthday of
Rudolf Steiner
During 2011 we
celebrated Rudolf
Steiner‘s 150th
birthday (27.2.1861).
Rudolf Steiner, visionary,
scientist and
artist, developed
the Anthroposophy
and is the founder
of the first Waldorf
school in Stuttgart
(1919). We exhibited our bilingual posters in
Windhoek (Goethe Centre) and Cape Town;
then the exhibition went to Berlin. The posters
were then shown to the German public at
various places, giving them an insight to Anthroposophy
and the Anthroposophical network
in Namibia. The posters introduced them to
organisations such as the ATCK (Agricultural
Training Centre Krumhuk), the Krumhuk Farm,
the Waldorf Kindergarten, the Waldorf School
Windhoek, as well as the Christian Community.
Building an oven –
Project grade 3
Elli Loris-Quint, classteacher in 2011, built with
grade 3 an oven as part of their Building Main
Lesson. Manfred Quint, Architect from Germany,
worked during his holiday with the class in
the mornings. They were lucky that an architect
chose to spend part of his holiday to help
the pupils with their project. The oven is now
available for use at events and by the school.
Vocational Training
Meetings and discussions concerning the future
of the Integrated Vocational Training programme
at our school Vocational training at
schools was also a central theme at the Educational
Conference during June/July 2011. In May
2011, Hans-Peter Seeger made contact with the
FORUM Berufsbildung, and the Würth Foundation
in Germany, in an efforts to help develop our
IVT programme at school.
Subsequently, a delegation came to visit our
school: Dr. Helmut Riethmüller (FORUM Berufsbildung
Berlin), Ulrich Kleber (FORUM Berufsbildung
Stuttgart) and Frieder Münz (former
Director Freie Schule Anne-Sophie). Thanks to
Professor Angela Mickley, as well as our Board
of Trustees in Germany, contact was re-kindled
with the Namibian Embassy in Berlin. The central
theme was the basic vocational training for
Namibian youths.
During their week-long visit, various sites
were visited and intensive discussions took
place.
A very significant group of people met at our
school on the day of the Minister’s visit, which
included Maria Nangolo-Rukoro of the Namibian
Training Authority, as well as Dr. Romeo
Bertolini of the German Embassy (BMZ) (see
photo). As a result of our intense preparations
during the past months, a wide network of
contacts could be built up for the development
of the Basic Vocational Training in Namibia. We
thank our newly formed partners: GIZ, NIMT,
NIED and KAYEC.
Frieder Münz visited us from 26 March until
26 April 2012. Frieder Münz is continuing
his concept work for Vocational Trainings in
January 2013 together with Hans-Peter Seeger,
School manager.
High School
Report 2011
The first trimester posed many challenges in
regards to the Integrated Vocational Training.
This led us to decide to close the IVT at the end
of the first trimester, in order to finish the registration
process and get all curricula in order.
The aim is to re-open the IVT in January 2013, if
everything is in order.
on education at the Educational Conference
held at Safari Court in June.
In July Mrs A Spitta left the school to move
back to Germany. Mr E Spitta left us in August.
Talks were held with the University of Flensburg
to start a partnership which will see
their student teachers, coming to do teaching
practice at our school, twice a year. Once a year
we will accommodate primary school student
teachers and once a year we will accommodate
students studying to become high school
teachers.
In September Ms C Engelbrecht joined the
school as a Biology teacher. Mr. M Beukes also
rejoined us at the same time to teach History in
Grade 13.
During the 3rd trimester the High School
Choir received an invitiation from Ms Marion
Wurth to travel to Germany to give performances
to prospective donors of the school in order
to encourage them to join the Non-Profitable
Organisation that she will start for our school.
At the end of the year Mr B Klein left the
school to move back to Rehoboth.
Hostel Report
3rd Trimester 2011
At the beginning of 2011 Barbara Stauffer and
her husband Erich Meier decided to take over
the hostel leadership which would become
vacant in July. Both wanted to live on the premises.
In order to avoid losing any places for
children, an small extension was organised with
two rooms for children and a small room for the
volunteers. This was mostly financed by donations
from Barbara and Erich’s circle of friends.
Almost exactly at the beginning of the 3rd
trimester the building was finished and 6 of the
girls and 2 volunteers could move in. Since then
30 places were available in total. Already in the
holidays Barbara and Erich moved into the part
next to the dining hall, which formed a separate
living area. Although one of the rooms are being
used for children.
The children initially had to get used to the
new leadership, but they quickly adapted to the
Waldorf School Windhoek Actual 2011 & Budget 2012
new rules. For example they had to learn to only
dish as much as they would be able to eat. Only
empty plates are returned to the kitchen. The
leftovers from lunch, which the children love,
are warmed up for the evening meal so that
nothing is wasted.
Large amounts of rubbish. In emergencies one
could still give the leftovers from ones plate to
the chickens. And the quantities of packaging,
separated into categories helped considerably
to the quantities collected and enabled the
school to win the first prize at the School Recycling
Competition.
Sarah and !Gobon left the hostel after completing
their 13th school year. Both have lived
in the hostel from the beginning of their school
time, a long time!
At the end of the school year 6 boys and 19
girls went on holiday and 2 guest students
returned to Germany. At the beginning of 2012
the hostel began with 30 children – every place
taken.
