City Overview 

Twenty-three miles north of Chicago’s Loop, the 

city of Highland Park tightly hugs beautiful Lake 

Michigan for nearly five miles. West from the lake, 

the city limits stretch to Deerfield, with Glencoe to 

the south and Lake Bluff, Bannockburn, Highwood 

and Lake Forest to the north. 

Highland Park, approximately 12.5 square miles in 

area, is a lakefront community on the North Shore 

with many natural amenities, including ravines, 

lakeshore and trees, as well as lovely homes with 

distinct architectural and historic character. 

Highland Park is home for more than 30,000 

residents, diverse in its population and abundant in 

its education. One of the many qualities that make 

Highland Park unique is its diversity. It has affordable 

housing initiatives and an ample supply of both 

single-family and multi-family residences. 

At the southern end of the city, on more than 36 

acres of beautifully landscaped and wooded land, 

lies Ravinia Festival. This world-class, year-round

around the world since 1899. It is the summer 

home to the world-renowned Chicago Symphony

Highland Park Businesses are going Green 

While Kermit the Frog may sing “It’s 

not easy being Green”, in Highland 

Park it is becoming easier every 

day. Examining and initiating local 

efforts related to resource consumption 

are the first steps in determining 

global sustainability. Highland Park 

Chamber of Commerce member businesses 

understand this responsibility, 

and they have been proactive in 

offering goods and services that will 

sustain the environment by limiting 

waste, recycling materials, and using 

renewable resources. The success 

in which environmental, social, and 

economic systems work together 

has enormous bearing on the health, 

happiness, and productivity of our 

community. 

The Highland Park Chamber of 

Commerce sends its newsletter, most 

invitations, and other announcements 

electronically instead of in print form. 

The Chamber encourages ‘shopping 

local’ by welcoming new residents to 

our community with a reusable shopping 

tote made of recycled material. 

Vogue Printers prints this Community 

Guide and sixOOthreefive magazine 

with soy-based, rather than petroleum-based, 

ink on recycled paper. 

A major area of local business that 

heavily promotes sustainability is the 

construction, building supply, and 

design industry. Dirsmith Construction 

Co., Inc.’s, Tim Dirsmith recently collaborated 

with other local businessmen to 

install a wind turbine and solar panels 

on Chicago’s Jonathan Burr Elementary 

School. Power generated from the array 

will feed down from the school’s roof 

to a display that will allow students to 

see, touch and learn how the power 

of free energy can be used. “My hope 

is that (this activity can inspire) . . . 

a student to pursue a dream in the 

sciences and create something unique,” 

said Dirsmith. 

Make the Switch 

Barbara Lansing, CEO of Idlewood 

Electric Supply, Inc., is a big fan of LED

(Light Emitting Diode) lighting. She 

said it is “the newest and greatest 

thing in lighting. These bulbs can last 

up to 50,000 hours! Can you imagine 

not having to change light bulbs?” 

Idlewood works to educate consumers 

on LEDs and other environmentallyfriendly 

items as compact fluorescent 

lamps, dimming controls, solar 

powered attic fans, and new fluorescent 

fixtures with energy-saving ballasts 

and bulbs. 

John G. Harty, Ltd. Construction 

Management encourages clients to 

use sustainable materials, including 

tile, lighting, and countertops, and 

promotes using rugs and carpets 

certified under the Green Label Plus 

Program. This is the Carpet and Rug 

Institute’s list of the lowest chemical-emitting 

carpets and other floor 

coverings on the market. President 

John Harty works with businesses that 

contract with homeowners to remove 

and recycle usable materials, thereby 

diverting construction debris from 

disposal in landfills. 

Michael Mastrangelo, owner of 

Masterpiece Construction & Alternate 

Energy in Highwood, said his company 

“hardly throws anything away.” Wood 

scraps and drywall are recycled, and 

usable items are donated to such 

non-profits as Habitat for Humanity.

known for designing healthy, energyefficient, 

and environmentally friendly 

construction. Daniel Baigelman’s office 

space incorporates the principles of 

Leadership in Energy and Environmental 

Design (LEED) and includes a 

space for “edutainment” events about 

sustainable living, green working 

spaces, and the importance of recycling.

Jokela said that Green Living Designs 

promotes the use of recycled or recyclable 

materials as well as high-quality 

products made by local craftsmen

his company now can provide durable,

that have little or no odor and do not 

pollute the air.

company. Paint Jar offers a recycling 

program to its customers for old paint, 

too, and the company’s snowplow 

division uses a biodegradable de-icer.

shore company to earn an Environmental 

Stewardship Program (ESP) 

certification on their cabinetry, which 

is manufactured with low formaldehyde 

emissions and made from fast 

growing hardwood trees and recycled 

materials.

tons after a single 

concert, is handsorted.

other recyclable materials 

are identified during this 

process. 

Another Ravinia conservation 

effort involves using 

utensils that might look like 

plastic, but they are actually 

sugarcane, and food cartons 

that are created from biodegradable 

material made from 

wheatgrass, rice straw, and 

rye, all biodegradable and 

compostable. Ravinia uses only 

organic pesticides and cleaners, 

and is replacing all its lights with 

compact fluorescent lights. To cut 

down on paper waste, Ravinia is 

reducing the number of printed 

program books; one program per 

couple is the goal. 

Highland Park Hospital, NorthShore 

University HealthSystem uses a type 

of floor scrubbing equipment that has 

greatly reduced the amount 

of cleaning chemicals and 

lessened water usage by 

70%. The Hospital’s Environmental 

Services Department 

also collects 60 tons of cardboard 

a year for recycling, 

and NorthShore’s utilization 

of electronic medical records 

system-wide has had a huge 

impact on paper consumption. 

At Guy Viti Insurance and Viti Financial, 

many of Viti’s insurance companies 

offer to pay for a green consultant as 

well as to give credit if a client repairs 

or replaces damaged goods 

with sustainable 

materials.

per vehicle, thereby lowering the automobile 

carbon footprint. 

Equinox Fitness Club uses all green 

cleaning product and 100% ecofriendly 

towels, 

and General 

Manager Janet

“green” paint. 

In addition, the 

fitness floor

is made from 

recycled tires. 

Bionic Jetting and Drain Services 

specializes in the green plumbing 

technology of hydro jetting, a method 

of scouring and cleaning internal 

sewer pipes with a stream of water 

that cuts through grime and built-up 

debris. This method uses no harmful 

or detrimental chemicals. 

Sustainability efforts are also apparent 

at the Chicago Botanic Garden in 

Equinox Fitness’s Floor is made of recycled tires 

neighboring Glencoe. Senior Public 

Relations Specialist Julie McCaffrey 

said that the Garden’s new Plant 

Conservation Science Center is “a brilliant 

example of earth-friendly architecture 

in that it 

has a green roof 

garden and also a 

surrounding rainwater 

glen filled 

with plants that 

clean rainwater 

before it returns to 

the water table.” 

People who visit 

the Science Center 

can discover the value of filtering 

water naturally and learn more about 

sustainability. Botanic Garden visitors 

should also stop by the Regenstein 

Fruit and Vegetable Garden to pick up 

organic gardening tips. 

“Organic” is a key word for Danny 

Kaiserman, owner of Douglas Allergy 

Relief Source, which specializes in 

creating healthy home environments. 

Kaiserman, whose store offers several 

certified organic bedding products 

that include mattresses, pillows, and 

comforters, said “when you purchase 

a certified organic product, you can be 

certain that the manufacturing process 

has no impact on the environment.” 

Act Locally 

“Think globally, act locally” has never 

been more important, especially at the

Fourteen year-old, Highland Park High School 

freshman, Jonny Cohen, had an idea. 

A simple idea, really. Jonny’s idea was to afix 

a Plexiglas shield to the front of a school bus. 

The shield, attached from the hood to the top 

of the windshield, would direct the flow of 

air up over the bus, rather than straight into 

the windshield, thereby making the bus more 

aerodynamic. Buses that are more aerodynamic 

will burn less fuel, get better gas mileage, 

reduce gas emissions, and save money. 

From this simple idea, the GreenShields 

Project was born. Jonny’s support network 

for the project has been extraordinary, reaching 

twenty plus people including parents, 

siblings, friends, educators and administrators 

from Elm Place and HPHS, and extending 

to researchers at Northwestern and MIT. 

“The average bus gets between 4-6 miles 

per gallon,” explains Jonny. “With our scale 

tunnel testing, we saw 10-40% improvements 

in fuel efficiency.” 

Pretty cool, huh? 

Well, the Pepsi Company thought so, too. 

Pepsi has been putting up millions of dollars 

as part of their Pepsi Refresh Project - the 

money is awarded to people who create 


innovative green designs and other sociallyaware 

and socially-positive concepts. Jonny 

and his team of juniors applied, and the 

whole school and the community rallied 

behind them. Jewel Foods and Sunset 

Foods allowed the team to set up information 

and voting tables in their stores to 

educate people about the GreenShields 

Project. With the whole community voting 

for them, they won $25,000.00! MTV 

has partnered with Pepsi to profile the 

recipients of this grant money all across the 

country. A small crew came to Highland

Over the last several years, the City of Park Hospital, 

Highland Park has worked to proactively the Chamber of Commerce,

to sustainability. As part of the 

process, the City’s consultant, HarneTech, 

has completed a greenhouse gas inventory 

and compiled other data indicators 

One of the City’s twenty-two hybrid 

vehiclesthat have serviced the community since 2005. 

to establish a baseline carbon footprint 

for Highland Park, which will be used to 

measure the effectiveness of all future 

sustainability actions. Examples of indicators 

contained in the baseline include 

vehicle miles traveled per household, 

municipal solid waste generation, and 

diversion rates of recyclables and landscape 

waste. 

In early 2010, Waste Management, the 

City’s franchised commercial waste hauler, 

began utilizing compressed natural gas 

(CNG) trucks, as part of an overall effort to 

reduce Highland Park’s carbon footprint. 

The City also offers free electronics 

recycling twice weekly in conjunction 

with SWALCO. Residents may drop off 

unwanted electronics at the Firearms Training 

Center, 1180 Half Day Road, on Tuesdays 

and Fridays from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

STUDENT ORCHESTRA ACHIEVES RAVINIA GOAL: 

REACH*TEACH*PLAY 

The not-for-profit Ravinia Festival 

connects music to thousands of families 

around Chicago through multi-tiered 

education programs including a community 

conservatory in Lawndale, in-school training 

of teachers and students, and the Chicagowide 

music appreciation program One 

Score, One Chicago, which this year focuses 

on Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. 

The newest education effort is the REACH 

Orchestra, a student-training orchestra at 

William G. Hibbard Elementary School in 

the Albany Park neighborhood of Chicago. 

These programs, under the umbrella 

REACH*TEACH*PLAY, serve more than 

75,000 people throughout the region. 

Working with the People’s Music 

School of Chicago, the Women’s Board of 

Ravinia Festival created the REACH 

Orchestra, for children 8 to 12 years old. This 

program is influenced by the successful El 

Sistema orchestral education plan devised in 

Venezuela, which is a system of total 

immersion in music study. The free afterschool 

orchestra program began in January 

with 72 beginners eagerly selecting their 

instruments and immediately experimenting 

with them. 

Aportion of proceeds generated by 

the Women’s Board’s annual black-tie gala 

goes directly to Ravinia’s educational 

programs. This dedication prompted 

the Women’s Board to create a 

REACH*TEACH*PLAY task force, cochaired 

by longtime Ravinia supporters 

Caroline Huebner and Patty McGrath. The 

task force studied educational opportunities 

that would prove most effective before 

deciding on the new orchestra. 

Last fall, the People’s Music 

School of Chicago met with great success 

upon creating the first student orchestra at 

Hibbard called YOURS (Youth Orchestra 

Urban Rita Simo). There is a wait-list of 

more than a hundred willing participants. 

The students rehearse every day, breaking 

into sectionals two days a week and 

performing as a group two days a week. 

One day a week, the REACH and YOURS 

orchestras rehearse together. 

The instruments for the REACH orchestra 

were acquired with major support from 

Fifth Third Bank. Support has also been 

provided by Infinium Capital Management, 

Ellen & Paul Gignilliat, Madeline & 

Richard Halpern, Heather Bilandic, 

Monique Crossan and Linda Beck & Eric 

Estes. 

Ravinia Festival continues an 

instrument drive to acquire musical 

instruments for future orchestras. Anyone

annually recognize a select group of High School Seniors and award scholarships
