est actor
in a supporting role
Javier Bardem*
No Country for Old Men
Not since Hannibal Lecter has the
cinema seen a character with such a
cold passion for murder as Javier
Bardem’s portrayal of Anton
Chigurh, a serial killer with a Buster
Brown haircut, in No Country for
Old Men. Bardem’s offbeat style
matches perfectly with that of directors
Joel and Ethan Coen. With that
winning combination emerges a performance
that will be the most
talked about in years. He’s clearly the
frontrunner in the Best Supporting
Philip Seymour
Hoffman
Charlie Wilson’s War
The real standout in Charlie
Wilson’s War is Philip Seymour
Hoffman playing CIA agent
Gust Avrakotos, who, from the
opening scene until the closing
credits,bowls over everyone in
his path. Sleazy and outspoken
but not as menacing as we
have seen him in his last couple
of roles, Hoffman takes the wit from Aaron Sorkin’s
screenplay and makes you wish everyone in Government
talked this way. Not as good as he was in Capote but definitely
one of the frontrunners in this year’s race.
Tom Wilkinson
Michael Clayton
“Amazing” is the first word
that pops in your head after
seeing Wilkinson’s bipolar
character Arthur Edens
unravel onscreen. He can go
from madness to total clarity
in an instant. Anybody else
in this over-the-top role
would have been off the
mark, but Wilkinson shows
us why he is one of the best in the business. Will the
Academy like his character, have an epiphany and
honor this incredible performance? If he doesn’t win,
it will definitely warrant a court appeal.
Casey Affleck
The Assassination of Jesse
James by the Coward
Robert Ford
Stealing the movie away from
Brad Pitt is an accomplishment
in itself.Tack on another
strong role in his brother
Ben’s directorial debut Gone
Baby Gone,and it’s apparent
that this is Affleck’s year. His
quiet and hypnotic portrayal
of Robert Ford, subtle as it is, grows on you. Affleck’s performance
will surprise most people but it may not be
enough to beat Javier Bardem. One thing is clear: Casey
Affleck is here to stay.
Hal Holbrook
Into the Wild
There is a scene in Into the
Wild where Hal Holbrook’s
character Ron Franz asks to
adopt the young star of the
film (Emile Hirsh) and
become a grandfather to the
grandchild he never had. It
is one of 2007’s most powerful
moments in cinema. It
is also this scene that lands
82-year-old Holbrook his first Oscar nomination.
Delivering a performance that tears at your heart,
you’ll wish Holbrook was in the entire film and not just
the end.
